Monses Gavia
MIDLAND - Monses Gavia, 72, of Midland, a Midland Country Club employee, died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2005, in Midland after a brief battle with cancer.
A rosary will be said at 7 p.m. today at Pipkin Funeral Home Chapel. Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church with the Rev. Ray Wilhelm officiating. Burial will be at Resthaven Memorial Park.
He was born in Imperial and moved to Midland in 1949 from Buena Vista. He was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church.
SURVIVORS Wife, Sylvestra “Sylvia” Gavia of Midland; daughter, Lucy Granado of Midland; brothers, Ramon P. Gavia of Denton, Joe Jesse Gavia and Freddie Gavia, both of Midland; sisters, Maria Chacon of Odessa and Catalina Pinon Gavia of Midland; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Patsy Merle Griffith
Odessa - Patsy Merle Griffith, age 70, of Odessa, passed away on January 21, 2005, at Regency Hospital in Odessa.
Services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday, January 25, 2005, at the Frank W. Wilson Funeral Director’s Chapel with the Rev. Terry Wright of Westover Baptist Church officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Patsy was born May 12, 1934, in Gouldbusk, Texas, to Tom and Stella Storey. She graduated from OHS in 1953. She married J.L. “Jake” Griffith on August 24, 1954, in Lovington, N.M.
She was a longtime resident of Goldsmith, where she taught Sunday school. She later moved to Brownwood and most recently to Odessa. She loved arts and crafts, crocheting and making dolls.
Survivors include her husband of 50 years, J.L. Griffith; a son, Terry L. Griffith and wife Mitzi of Midland; brothers, Bill Storey and wife Pat, Bobby Storey and wife June and Tommy Storey, all of Odessa; a sister, Etta Watson and husband Robert of Odessa; two grandchildren, Mike and his wife Jennifer and their daughter Madigan, and Stephanie; also several nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.
Services are entrusted to Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors.

Jewel Gertrue Hammond
Odessa - We said goodbye to our special friend and Mother on Thursday, Jan. 20, 2005.
She leaves a legacy of service, hard work, and sweet attitude. Whatever the task, she tackled it with a positive spirit without complaining. Her answer to ‘‘How are you feeling today, Mrs. Hammond?” was always the same, ‘‘Just fine.” Her idea of fun each day was to listen to her families talk about what was happening in their lives.
Jewel was an avid quilter and passed that legacy along to her daughters and grandchildren. They celebrated birthdays by sending each other material to make new quilts. Special memories were made sitting around her quilting frames laughing and sharing stories.
Jewel was born to John and Alice Pruitt on Nov. 26, 1912. She was one of five children born to this family. Floyd Homer Pruitt, Milburn Smith Pruitt, her son, Ninnia Terrell are deceased; her sister, Dorothy Fay Wright of Sacramento, Calif., survives her.
Jewel married Clarence Hammond on Feb. 21, 1931, in Brownwood, Texas. He died in 1975.
They moved to Odessa in 1942 along with three of their daughters. The other three daughters were born in Odessa.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, two brothers and one sister.
She was a longtime member of Eastside Baptist Church and in her later years attended Crescent Park Baptist Church.
Survivors include her six daughters, Rubenia Haynes of Odessa, Patsy McKay and husband, Dan, of Odessa, Merita Hart and husband, Roy, of Odessa, Parthenia Moneyhun and husband, Buddy, of Bolingbrook, Ill., Doris Whitley and husband, Weldon, of Odessa, and Glenda Cobb and husband, Danny, of Odessa. She was also blessed with 15 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends are left to mourn her death.
Special thanks to Dr. Doran. Dr. Amaran, Dr. Ghanta and Dr. Boccalandro for providing attentive care. Thanks also to the staff of 4 Central and CCU at Medical Center Hospital who helped maker her comfortable in the last days as well as the staff of Sagebrush Physical Therapy.
Her children arise and call her blessed, Proverbs, 21:28.
Visitation was from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today, Sunday, Jan. 23, 2005, at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Arturo Aguinaga Munoz
Odessa - Arturo Aguinaga Munoz, 71, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2005, at his residence in Odessa.
He was born Dec. 1, 1933, in Torreon Coahuila, Mexico, to mother Ascencion Aguinaga, who preceded him in death. Mr. Munoz was married to Casimira Munoz, who preceded him in death. He was a Catholic.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 24, 2005, at St. Joseph Catholic Church with the Rev. Mark Miller officiating. Burial will follow at Ector County cemetery in the RoseHill section. Visitation will be held at his residence, 11745 W. 62nd St., Saturday and Sunday with a rosary being said at 7 p.m. Saturday. Arrangements by Martinez Funeral Home.
He is survived by his sons, Felipe Aguinaga and spouse, Alicia, of Ft. Morgan, Colo., and Francisco “Paco” Aguinaga and spouse Maxine of Odessa; daugthers, Maria “Queta” Romero and spouse Abel, Rosa Rueda and spouse Humberto and Sylvia Aguinaga and spouse Luis and Laura Rodriguez, all of Odessa; stepdaughter, Juana Dominguez and spouse Jacinto of San Luis Potosi, Mexico; sisters, Guadalupe Aguinaga, Virginia Aguinaga, and Maria de la Luz Aguinaga, all of Durango, Mexico; 20 grandchildren, Adrianna, Erwin, Kaycie, Melody, Ryan, Humberto, Abigail, Catherine, Ruben, Yesenia, Richard, Hector, Isaiah, Mark, Michelle, Melissa, Alice, Marianna, Genoveva and Poririo; and 7 great-grandchildren.

Gale Marie Brom Ramirez
ODESSA - Gale Marie Brom Ramirez, 50 years of age, passed away on January 21, 2005 at her Odessa Residence.
She was born on August 8, 1954 in St. Charles, Missouri, to George and Mary Ann Brom. Gale was employed at the JBS Parkway Wal-Mart as cashier manager and was Catholic.
She married Rudy Ramirez on November 4, 1972, in El Paso, Texas.
Gale was preceded in death by her father; and a son; William Ramirez.
Surviving are her husband Rudy Ramirez of Odessa; sons, Michael Ramirez and Daniel Ramirez, both of Odessa; daughter, Victoria Ramirez of Odessa; mother; Mary Ann Cass; brothers, Jeff Brom, Ward Brom and Blane Brom, all of Ofalan, Mo.; sisters, Cheryl Brom of Odessa, Donna Brom of El Paso, Melissa Withrow of Manchester, Mo., Renea Brom of Ofalan, Mo.
Visitation will begin from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. to-day at Odessa Funeral Home. Funeral services have been set for 2 p.m. Monday, January 24, 2005, at Odessa Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jack Watkins and Bishop Joe Henegar officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Daniel Tarango, James Mal-donado, Paul Maldonado, Joel Loya, Thomas Sneed and James Simmons.
A special thanks to Odyseey Hospice, Dr. Sal-cido, Dr. Khandawal, Dr. Davenport and MCH and staff for all the care given to Gale.

Otho Don Thompson
Abingdon, Va. - Don Thompson, age 72, of Abingdon, Virginia, formerly of Odessa and Midland, Texas, died Sunday, January 16, 2005, from injuries sustained in an accident.
He was born in Dickens, Texas, in 1932. He attended The University of Houston, Texas Tech University and served in the Army Medical Corps. As a young man, he performed in Hollywood as a movie extra, acted in summer stock and worked in the television industry in New York City.
Don was a talented chef who, together with his partner, Hector Bellini, owned and operated Bellini and Thompson, two restaurants in Midland and Odessa, both of which enjoyed statewide reputations for excellent dining.
He retired to Abingdon to be with friends, to enjoy the beauty of Southwest Virginia and the abundance of cultural events available. He truly loved his new home.
He is survived by his aunt Cindy Mays; his cousin, Nancy McCann and husband Mike and their children; numerous friends; and Alexander, his beloved cat companion of 16 years. He was large of heart and is greatly missed.
Don would request that any gifts in his memory be made to a cause dear to him, The Animal Defense League, P. O. Box 2099, Abingdon, Virginia, 24212.

Clay S. Wayman, M.D.
San Antonio - Dr. Clay Steven Wayman was born on June 2, 1960, in Odessa, Texas.
He graduated from Permian High School in 1978 and attended Texas Tech University where he graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science degree. He earned his Doctorate from Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, in 1986. He completed three years of Internship and Residency at The University of Alabama, Birmingham, in Internal Medicine. He received a fellowship in Gastroenterology, at The University of South Florida, Tampa, in 1991. He practiced medicine for 10 years in Charlotte, North Carolina.
In 2000, he moved to San Antonio, Texas, and practiced medicine until he was diagnosed with brain cancer.
He had a lifelong love for music and enjoyed playing the piano and organ. At age 14, Clay began to play for church congregations, beginning with St. Andrew Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Odessa, Texas. He had the wonderful opportunity to travel extensively throughout the world; and he considered the highlight of his professional career going on a medical mission to Belarus, where he spent two and one-half weeks administering medical care to survivors of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster.
The unquestionable highlight of his life was his ability to adopt a daughter, Lauren Nicole Wayman, in 1998. She brought an immeasurable amount of joy and fulfillment into his life.
Dr. Wayman was a member of the Stone Oak Presbyterian Church and participated in their music program prior to his illness.
He is survived by his daughter, Lauren Nicole Wayman of San Antonio, Texas; his mother, Mrs. Neva McSpadden Wayman of Little Rock, Arkansas; his father and stepmother, Dr. Sam and Donna Wayman of Hemphill, Texas; and many friends and family members.
He was grateful for those who cared for him and always tried to acknowledge with profound appreciation each of the kind cards, flowers, and personal expressions of affection that were demonstrated during his illness. Additionally, he was especially thankful for his medical partners and office staff at San Antonio Digestive Disease Associates for their unwavering support and love.
The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at Porter Loring Mortuary North.
Funeral services will be at 7 p.m. Monday, January 24, 2005, at Stone Oak Presbyterian Church, 2024 Crescent Oaks with Pastor Mark Mitchum officiating and Dr. James Howell of Charlotte, North Carolina, speaking.
Dr. Wayman will be sent to Batesville, Arkansas, for interment in the Barren Fork cemetery, Mount Pleasant Arkansas, under the direction of Roller-Crouch Funeral Home, 510 East College Ave., Batesville, Arkansas; (870) 793-4161.

Otis O. Barker Sr.
Early - Otis O. Barker Sr., 78, of Gardendale, went to rest with the Lord at 11 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 20, 2005, in Odessa.
Otis was born April 4, 1926, in Lubbock, the son of Walter and Mollie Sasseman Barker.
He was the owner and operator of A-1 Houston Fire Extinguisher Service Company, Inc. for 54 years. He was a United States Navy veteran of WWII.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Jo Stevens Barker of Gardendale; sons, Otis O. Barker Jr. and wife, Dee, of Shiner, Arles Barker, Calvin Barker, and Shawn Barker and wife, all of Odessa, and Terry of Ft. Worth; grandchildren, Dustin ‘‘Scott’‘ Barker and wife, Joni, Kevin Barker and wife, Gina, Brandace Barker, Tosha Barker, K.J. Barker, Jeff Burgess, and Joshua Burgess; and great-grandchildren, Kylar Barker, Abbey Barker, and Kelie Barker. He is also survived by his sister, Myrtle Blackwell of Dry Prong, La.; and brother, Leo Barker of Marble Falls.
Services will be held 11 a.m. Monday Jan. 24, 2005, at Davis-Morris Funeral Home Chapel in Brownwood with interment to follow at East Lawn cemetery.

Mary Pearl Lake
ODESSA - Mary Pearl Lake, of Odessa, passed from this life on January 19, 2005, at Parks Methodist Retirement Village. She was 89 years old.
Mary Pearl was born on October 30, 1915, in Graham, Texas, to William Luther and Nellie May McKinley. She was raised and educated in Olney, Texas, where she graduated from high school.
She married N.H. Lake on November 26, 1947, in Odessa. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and homemaker as well as a member of the Eastern Star. She and Norvin moved throughout the oil patch with stays in Odessa, Snyder, and Cortez, Colorado. Upon Norvin’s retirement from Texaco, they returned to Odessa in 1974.
Mary Pearl was preceded in death by her husband N. H. Lake on May 29, 1992, and a grandson, Michael Goldsmith on June 29, 2004.
She is survived by her son Jim Goldsmith and wife Jemmie Ray of Odessa and daughter Bonnie Meegan and her husband Joe of Odessa. ‘’Ma’’ is survived by her grandchildren Kristi Jumper and husband Steve of Midland, Michael’s wife Melanie Goldsmith of Midland, Casey Durant and wife Shayla of Midland, and Cody Durant and wife Julia of Phoenix, Arizona. She is survived by eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 9 a.m. Saturday, January 22, 2005, at the Frank Wilson Funeral Home Chapel under the direction of Pastor Byron McWilliams of First Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Serving as pallbearers will be Casey Durant, Steve Jumper, Kevin Jumper, Brian Jumper, Austin Jumper, and Scott McCall.
The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to the staffs of Parks Methodist Retirement Village and Hospice of Midland for their loving care and direction these past months.
