Vincent Alan Sherrod

Odessa - Vincent Alan Sherrod died July 12, 2005, at Baylor All Saints Hospital in Fort Worth. He was 89 years old.
A Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. today, July 14, 2005, in the Chapel at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, July 15, 2005, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 612 E. 18th St., in Odessa, Texas. Military honors with the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 4372 will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens; afterward, a reception will be held at St Mary’s Parish Hall.
Dr. Sherrod practiced medicine in Odessa from 1960, until he retired in 1982. He and his wife, Julia Sayer Sherrod, moved to Fort Worth to be with their children and grandchildren in 2004.
Dr. Sherrod was born just outside Robinson, Ill., in 1916. When he was 16-years-old, he won the national high school saxophone contest and a four-year scholarship to The Juilliard School. He chose medicine over music, however, and graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1938. He attended St. Louis University Medical School, where he interned at City Hospital and completed a three-year residency at Missouri Pacific Hospital.
He joined the U.S. Army and received an honorable discharge when he became ill with tuberculosis. In those days, TB usually was a death sentence. The Army sent him home to die but his determined young wife nursed him back to health. Defying the odds was Dr. Sherrod’s mantra for the rest of his life as he outlived numerous predictions of his imminent demise.
In 1949, the Sherrod family moved to Iraan, Texas, after being contacted by Dr. Sherrod’s uncle, Frank Bascom, who worked for the Ohio Oil Co., later the Marathon Oil Co. Physicians were desperately needed in West Texas and the oil company offered to pay for his move and set him up in practice, if he would move his young family west.
West Texas was in the midst of a several year drought when the Sherrods arrived and they lived through epic dust storms that took the paint off the side of cars and buildings. At the time, there were no physicians at all for three huge West Texas counties around Iraan. Dr. and Mrs. Sherrod were a great team. She was a registered nurse and they were the health care system for thousands of people in an isolated part of Texas. Among other services, they performed was establishing a Well-Baby Clinic in Sheffield, Texas, where they immunized infants and children and taught young mothers best practices in caring for their children. They also were instrumental in building the Iraan Public Library and the Iraan Hospital.
Before building a hospital in Iraan, Dr. Sherrod drove a 120 mile round-trip twice a day to the nearest hospital in Fort Stockton, Texas. He often made house calls to ranches 60 miles outside town, where he not only treated all the human beings but also treated the livestock –there being no vet available– as well as a pet deer.
He raced a Jaguar and an Aston Martin in road races organized by the Sports Car Club of America. He and his wife, Judy, organized the Iraan Hill Climb for several years, sending exotic sports cars racing up the steep “Safety First Hill, ” outside Iraan. In the 1980s, he was the National Director of Medical Safety for the Sports Car Club of America and was responsible for many enhancements in the SCCA’s safety program. He was given a lifetime membership to the SCCA as a reward for his efforts.
While Dr. and Mrs. Sherrod lived in Iraan, they drove 60 miles round trip every Sunday and Holy Day of Obligation to either McCamey or Rankin to attend Catholic Mass because there was no Catholic Church in Iraan. When they moved from Iraan to Odessa, they donated their clinic building to the Catholic Church, who turned it into St. Francis Catholic Church.
Fast cars and Jazz were lifetime loves. Dr. Sherrod played saxophone with the “Modernaires, ” when he was in Notre Dame, and when he retired, he joined the Odessa College Jazz Band. He also played with the Jazz Band at the Odessa Senior Center.
He was a car enthusiast and owned Ferraris, a Pantera and other exotic automobiles.
He performed in many plays with the Permian Basin Playhouse and was a long-time sponsor of the Odessa Jazz Festival.
He and his wife were members of the Odessa Country Club and their sons, Daniel and Michael Sherrod, were Crystal Ball escorts.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Julia Sherrod; his children, Dan Sherrod of Richardson and his wife, Patricia, Dr. Peter Sherrod of Plano, Katie Sherrod of Fort Worth and her husband, the Rev. Gayland Pool, and Michael Sherrod of Fort Worth and his wife, Melissa; as well as nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Catholic Charities, 606 W. 10th St., Odessa, TX 79761; and to St. Mary’s School, 1703 Adams Ave., Odessa, TX 79761-1214.
Services are entrusted to Sunset Funeral Home in Odessa, Texas.
