Edward ‘Eddie’ Harold Whetsell
Odessa - Edward “Eddie” Harold Whetsell, 60, longtime Odessa resident, passed away March 5, 2005, in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., from health complications brought about by recently diagnosed cancer.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Marge, in 1986.
He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Linda Gray Whetsell of Odessa; a daughter, Stacy Whetsell of Houston; his father, Carl of Odessa; three brothers, Bobby of Duncan, Okla., Lynn of Garland, and Ronnie of Mansfield. ‘Nicky’s’ 1960’s era teen gathering place provided the setting in which he caught the eye of Linda Kay Gray. They fell in love and married
February 24th, 1967. A daughter, Stacy Caroll rounded out the family in 1971.
He was born Jan. 27, 1945, in Duncan, Okla., the second of what was to become a household of four boys. As were the times, the family moved to growing oil field city of Odessa. A 1964 graduate of Permian High School where he lettered in football, his spirits soared and sunk with the fortunes of the famed “Mojo” program over the years. After high school, he worked in various aspects of the oil business while continuing to work toward a college degree. He persevered and received a Bachelors of Arts in Accounting from UTPB in 1977. He began working at Sivalls in 1980 and eventually rose to the position of Controller at Control Equipment Inc., a title he held at the time of his death. Other professional associations included current tenure as the president of the Institute of Managerial Accountants-Permian Basin. He also was a member of the National Association of Control Managers and participated in the UTPB Accounting Mentor program. Eddie was a son, a brother, a husband, a father and, most of all, a friend to all he met. Like Will Rogers, he never met a person he didn’t like. No one was a stranger to him, even the small child in the grocery store. Few were the times he could walk through a restaurant without having to stop and shake hands or pass a word of greeting with many fellow diners. His brother-in-law in Houston had turned him into an avid Astros fan and the recent trip to Florida was to have included a special entrance to an Astros’ spring training practice session, arranged by his daughter who works for Fox Sports.
Eddie Whetsell lived his life as a testament to overcoming adversity. A near fatal childhood illness left him with profound hearing loss but the circumstances of the time delayed the acquisition of hearing aids until graduation from high school. He never let that hold him back or use it as an excuse. Caring deeply for those around him, he was a tough guy with a gentle spirit who did all he could to make this world a better place.
Viewing will be from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 10, at Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors.
He was a longtime member and church officer at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, March 11, at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church with the Rev. Kevin Bushart officiating. Graveside services will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Bobby Whetsell, Lynn Whetsell, Ronnie Whetsell, Kevin Hromas, Johnnie Hoggard and Tommy Bruce.
Services are entrusted to Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors.

Crescent Park is where she met Joseph Malcolm Mount, a confirmed bachelor so he thought. Margie and Malcolm (The M & M Couple) were married
