Ike Lovelady
Midland - Ike Lovelady, longtime resident of both Odessa and Midland, passed away Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005, in Albuquerque, N.M. Although his heart remained in West Texas, shortly after the death of his wife, Verta Lovelady, and due to his own gradually failing health, he moved to Albuquerque to be near his daughters.
He was born in Buford, Ark. And raised in Broken Arrow, Okla. He received a degree in engineering from the University of Oklahoma in 1937. He married
Verta while a college student, worked after graduation as an engineer for Black, Sivalls and Bryson (BS&B) in Oklahoma City, and joined the US Army Air Corp, after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He served as a pilot in the Pacific Theater and after the war returned to work as an engineer for BS&B again. He moved his family to Odessa in 1947, where he partnered with Charles Sisals to create Sisals Tanks, Inc. he later became an independent oil and gas producer and moved to Midland in the late 1960s.
He loved oil fields and oil business. Ike was featured in an article on the American oil boom in the Sept. 29, 1980, issue o f Newsweek Magazine. As noted in the article Ike Lovelady, like so many others, found romance in the oil fields. “If you’ve got any gambling blood, this is on tremendous roll of the dice, ” he said. Throughout his long career and despite occasional financial reversals, he continued to be eternally optimistic about West Texas, wildcatting and all of the aspects of the oil business. Like so many men of hit generation, his handshake was his word.
Losing his mother as a young boy and raised in poverty, Ike fulfilled most of his dreams. He became an engineer, a pilot and an entrepreneur. He married
a wonderful woman and had a family. He lived a long life, having reached 89 at the time of his death. His family guesses his regrets would be that he had to leave West Texas; that Verta was not able to share the last nine years of his life; and that he never experienced that tremendous, super colossal “gusher” that he always dreamed about. His daughters and grandchildren will never stop missing him.
Ike is survived by daughters, Connie Lovelady-Rappaport and her husband, Stuart Rappaport, and Linda Lovelady Epstein of Placitas, N.M.; grandchildren, Andrew Isaac Epstein and wife, Llia, Brady K. Lovelady, Ethan M.H. Epstein and wife, Susan, Bree Lovelady, Zachary Lovelady, Elizabeth Epstein, and Jonathan Epstein and wife, Jenifer. He is also survived by close friend, Donald Longcope of Albuquerque.
