Kenneth Frank Karr Jr.
Austin - Kenneth Frank Karr Jr. passed away early Sunday morning. Kenny, as most of us know him, was born on August 25, 1949, in Odessa.
Kenny was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth Frank Karr Sr.; his mother, Mary Ruth Ligon; his uncle, Roy Karr; and cousin Sonny Karr.
Kenny is survived by his cousin, Richard Karr and wife, Collette Karr; as well as second cousins, Roy Karr IV, Kathy Karr Cox, Mary Frances Karr Ellis, Angela Karr and Rachael Karr.
Kenny grew up in Odessa and began his education at San Jacinto Elementary. He graduated with honors from Odessa’s Permian High School in 1967. Kenny was an outstanding athlete and settled on baseball as his true love. Kenny was an All-District third baseman for Permian, a .400 hitter and cheerleader for the team while in the dugout between innings.
Kenny went on to fulfill his dreams at The University of Texas and walked on the baseball team his freshman year. Though he didn’t get much playing time (Texas won the national championship with talent from athletes such as Burt Hooton, James Street, David Chalk and Tommy Harmon), he remained an avid UT sports fan, particularly of baseball.
Kenny attended The University of Texas from 1967 to 1971 and graduated from the business school with a major in finance and a minor in communications. During his freshman year, Kenny became a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity, where he made lifelong friends with his Delta brothers. He continued to raise money for the fraternity throughout his life.
Kenny moved back home to Odessa and Midland in the late 1970s, where he started out in the restaurant business and eventually began his own advertising and marketing agency. Kenny’s clients ranged from banks to car dealers to TV and radio stations to charity fund-raising events, politics and everything in between. He enjoyed the advertising business and was involved in all aspects of it. He wrote and produced ads, in addition to negotiating prices and placing the ads.
Kenny was passionate about life in general and loved nothing better than to help people. He took care of friends in need and funded a number of charitable organizations. Kenny Karr was a Christian. He grew up at an early age in the First Baptist Church in Odessa and spent his later years at the First Presbyterian Church in Odessa.
In August of 2002, Kenny moved to Austin to work on a project with one of his former Delta friends. After completing that task, Kenny went back to marketing and had recently started a new marketing campaign in the Hill Country. Kenny’s love affair with Austin was at an all-time high when he left us to join his friends and family already in heaven. Kenny holds a permanent place in many hearts in Odessa, Midland, Austin and beyond.
A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Thursday, May 26, at 4 p.m. in the Smith Family Chapel at Riverbend Church on the Capitol of Texas Highway in Austin.
There will be a graveside service at 4 p.m. Friday, May 27, at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Odessa.
Honorary pallbearers are past, present and future members of Delta Tau Delta of The University of Texas Chapter. Special thanks to the pledge class of 1967 of which Kenny was a proud member.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to a charitable organization. Kenny’s favorites include: The University of Texas Baseball Scholarships (http://
