Shirley Kite
Midland - Shirley Kite passed away Wednesday, June 22, 2005, in Midland.
She was born Nov. 25, 1934, in San Angelo to Willy and Martha Edison. Shirley moved to Midland and was a graduate of Midland High School, Class of 1952. She married
Jerry L. Kite March 20, 1965, in Mentone, Texas. Shirley began working with Texas Electric in October of 1956 and retired after thirty-three years in November of 1999. She was a member of Bellview Baptist Church, Midland Walk About Club, West Texas Iris Society and the Native Plant Society of Texas-Llano Estacado Area.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; and her brother, Jimmy Edison.
Left to cherish her memory is her beloved husband, Jerry of Midland; and her family, Terry D. Kite and wife, Tina, and Steve Melton, both of Midland, Deborah J. Lancaster of Coppell, Texas, Roxanna L. Howard and husband, Dwain, of Greenwood; her brother, Bob Dawson of Little Rock, Ark.; her sister, Darlene Malone and husband, Terry, of Hot Springs, Ark.; her grandchildren, Jody Braun, Angie Coleman, Brett Lancaster, Jennifer Kite, Nicole Kite, Shane Howard, Laci Luig, Casey Howard, Steven Melton, Kim Maddy and Paige Davis; her great-grandchildren, Mason, McKenzie and Morgan Braun, Kelsey and Kennedy Maddy, Stuart Luig, and baby Davis.
Funeral services have been scheduled for 11 a.m. today, June 25, at Bellview Baptist Church with the Rev. Myron Unruh officiating. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park. Arrangements are under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Richard Davis, Kyle Braun, Steven Melton, Shane Howard, Casey Howard, Brett Lancaster and Ryan Luig.

Donald Ray Tyler
Midland - Donald Ray Tyler finished his life on Earth on June 15, 2005, in Oklahoma City.
He was born on December 26, 1941, in Stanley, Oklahoma.
Services were held Saturday, June 18, 2005, at the First Baptist Church of Clayton, Oklahoma. He was laid to rest at Stanley cemetery.
A memorial service will be held in Midland at a later date.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Gladys Lucille Tyler; father, Ray Dean Tyler; and brother, Eddie Gene Tyler.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce Tyler of Midland; daughters, Tammy Medhdizadeh and Theresa McCarley; and grandchildren, Houston, Danielle and Samantha Waters and Connor, Heath, and Quinn McCarly. He will be greatly missed by all of his friends and family.
Richard Blaine Buford
Odessa - Richard Blaine Buford, 59, of Odessa, Texas, passed away September 1, 2005, at his residence.
Richard was born September 12, 1945, in San Angelo, Tom Green County, Texas, to Edward Blaine Buford and Zela Ruth Adkins. He married
Loretta Gail Marshall, May 8th, 1974, in Kermit, Texas, where Rick graduated from Kermit High School and then furthered his education at Odessa College in Odessa.
Rick, as he was called, was a professional welder. He worked for MGF Drilling Co. in Midland, Texas, in the 1980s, going from there to Hollice Clark in Odessa, Texas, and finishing his career with Pradon Construction Co. also in Odessa for 20 years until he was unable to work.
He was a sports enthusiast and participated in all sports, including boxing in the Kermit Schools. His picture appeared in the Winkler County News many times for excelling in a sporting event. Rick loved working with the Odessa Youth Program in football and baseball with his son, Blaine. He was looking forward to being a mentor for his only grandson, Braiden Blaine, and watching him excel in sports, also.
Rick was a Veteran of the Vietnam War receiving the Bronze Star/2, the National Defense Service Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal along with a Marksman Rifle Award. He also received recognition for being in the USAINTS-Intel Analyst and USAINTS-Interrogate. He will be buried with full Military Honors, presented by the Honor Guard from the VFW No. 4372.
Mr. Buford is preceded in death by his father, Edward “Skeet” Blaine Buford.
Rick is survived by his wife, Loretta Buford of Odessa, Texas; one son, Blaine G. Buford of Odessa; and his son, Braiden Blaine Buford of Odessa, “the joy of his life;” two daughters, Briana Buford of Odessa, and Stefanee Buford of Odessa; his mother, Zelda Ruth Rives; one brother, David Buford of Odessa; two sisters, Katie Vickrey of Allen, Texas; and her two sons, Shane and his wife LaVonda Vickrey of Allen, Texas, and their three daughters, LaCrista, LaKayla, and Kelsie; and one son, Lance Vickery of Kermit, Texas; sister, Patsy and her husband Charlie Beck; and their two sons, Doyle and wife Susan Beck of Odessa, Texas, and their four children; one daughter, Regan L. Beck of Odessa; three sons; Dillan and Taylor Beck of Odessa, and Thomas Franks of Odessa; Charlie Beck Jr. and his two sons; Brice and Troy Beck of Odessa; uncles, J.D. Adkins of Buchanan Dam and Neil Dean Adkins of Odessa; also many cousins and friends.
The family will receive friends from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on today, September 3rd, 2005, at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.
Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Monday, September 5, 2005, at Kingston Baptist Church in Odessa, Texas, with the Pastor John Taylor officiating with the assistance of brother Jorge Garcia and brother Robert Rowe.

Bettye Louise Fryer

Bettye Fryer went to meet her beloved Lord and Savior Thursday, Sept. 1, 2005, after a long and courageous battle as a stroke victim.
Bettye was born Jan. 3, 1933, in Old Hickory, Ark., to Alva and Imo Pruett. She married
Gene Fryer on June 23, 1951, and spent her life as a loving wife and mother of four children and loving grandmother of four grandchildren. Bettye was raised, instilled with the value of hard work and that she did until she was struck by a stroke. Bettye was a very independent, feisty woman and she enjoyed nothing more than her gardening, being outdoors, planting her garden and flowers. She was an avid football and basketball fan. She attended every Odessa High School football game, and never missed a Dallas Maverick basketball game and saw them play in person a couple of seasons ago. That was one highlight in her life. Bettye was an active member of Sherwood Church of Christ, until she was struck by a stroke and loved her church family.
Bettye was preceded in death by her husband, Gene; and her mother and father, Alva and Imo Pruett.
Left behind to share Bettye’s memories are her children, Becky Whitaker and husband, Bill, of Odessa, Kathy Whalen of Odessa, Debbie Boxley and husband, David, of Wimberley, and Scott Fryer of Odessa; grandchildren, Joseph Whitaker of Arlington, Justin Boxley of Chicago, Ill., Lindsay Whalen of Denton, and Josh Boxley of San Marcos. Bettye is also survived by a brother, Bill Pruett of Malden, Mo.; aunt, Ola Rhea Wilson of Atkins, Ark.; three nieces; and a host of cousins and friends, as well as her Christian family.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 3, at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel with Lynn Money officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
The family would like to especially thank Laura Medrano, her sweet and precious caregiver and friend who was a Godsend to Bettye and her family, Home Hospice and Chris’ Country Retirement Home for their loving care and kindness throughout this most difficult time in Bettye and family’s lives.

Carol Cole Parker
Odessa - Carol Cole Parker, 69, passed away August 31, 2005, at her residence in Odessa, Texas.
Carol was born March 12, 1936, in Eunice, New Mexico, to Henry and Thelma Cole. She married
John J. Parker June 24, 1959.
Mrs. Parker is preceded in death by her parents; her brother, John Henry Cole; and her grandson, Kyle Christopher Upton.
Carol is survived by her husband, John J. Parker; children, Bill Parker and wife, Linda, of Odessa, Fonda Evans and husband, Tommy, of Odessa; Judy Groce and husband, Tony, of Killeen, Texas; Brenda Stidham and husband, Jeff, of Odessa; grandchildren, Brandy Haynes, Allison Parker, Shawn Upton, Nicholas and Derrick Groce, Zack Stidham, Savannah Hazard, and Ryan, Josh, Sarah, and Samantha Lambert; sister, Pat Poisson; adopted daughters, Judy Robertson and Michelle Lambert; aunts, Judith Irwin, Deloris Mason and Bobby Ramsey; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Ruby Faye Osburne
Odessa - Ruby Faye Osburne, 94, passed away August 30th, 2005, at Hospice House in Odessa, Texas.
Ruby was born August 17, 1911, in Ruby, Arkansas, to C.C. Coleman and Edna Temple, where she was reared and educated. She married
Ruben Daniel Osburne on June 20th, 1931, in Mountainberg, Arkansas. Ruby loved to make crafts for all the kids, and she loved to put on Sunday dinner for the whole family. She worked as a homemaker all her life and was a wonderful cook, wife and mother to all.
Mrs. Osburne is preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Clarence Osburne; a daughter, Treva Marler; three brothers; and a sister.
Ruby is survived by her sister; Bonnie Kimes of Newhall, California; brother, Doyle Coleman of Denton, Texas; daughters, Laberta Martin, Elva Blackmon and Donna Brown, all of Odessa; 12 grandchildren, and too many great-great-great-grandchildren to count.
Graveside services for Mrs. Osburne will be at 2 p.m. today, September 3rd, 2005, at Sunset Memorial Gardens with the Reverend Jimmy Braswell officiating.

Dorothy Velasquez
ODESSA - Dorothy Velasquez was born in Fort Stockton, Texas, on June 10, 1949. She was the precious child of Bernarda Garcia Mesa and Augustine Mesa.
She is survived by her husband Ruben Velasquez Sr.; four children, DeeAnna Arellano, Rebecca Scott Mason, Ruben Velasquez Jr. and Benjamin Velasquez; one sister, Carol Dominguez, and four brothers, Reynaldo Mesa, Agustine Mesa, Frank Mesa and Willie Mesa; and 13 grandchildren.
Dorothy was an extraordinary businesswoman with a passion for the English language, reading, fishing, sewing, gardening and especially being grandma! She was a loving wife to her husband and a dedicated mother to her children. Her faith in God superceded all other priorities and she had a very optimistic servant’s heart. Everything had potential! We will all miss her firm and encouraging words that caused many to go forth to accomplish and reach their dreams and goals. The faithfulness and love she expressed to her husband and children and their families will forever be treasured. Her hospitality gift will be a great asset in heaven as it was here on earth. Our heavy hearts rejoice in knowing, that as we let go of her here on earth and cry out our good-byes, heaven receives her with a divine celebration that “We can only imagine.” Praise be to the Lord, whom goes before us to prepare our place!

Glenna Carr
Andrews - Glenna Carr, age 79, of Andrews, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2005, in Andrews.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 12, 2005, at the Andrews County Old cemetery with the Pastor Steve Long, of Second Baptist Church in Andrews, officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Andrews Funeral Home.
Mrs. Carr was born on Sept. 28, 1925, in Dickens to Charles and Jessie Roberts. She married
James Wesley Carr on March 27, 1953, in Hobbs, N.M. He preceded her in death on April 16, 1976. She worked as a clerk for the Andrews County Health Department, until her retirement in 1991.
Survivors include one son, Alan Carr, of Odessa; two daughters, Donna Rogers and Leslie Vaughn, both of Andrews; and two grandchildren, Jennifer Huddleston of Wolfforth, and Krista Tiller of Wichita Falls.

J. Norris Hinds
Odessa - J. Norris Hinds, 91, of Odessa, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2005, at Medical Center Hospital.
He was born Sept. 30, 1913, in Winters. He served in the Army Air Corps from Sept. 12, 1942, to Nov. 5, 1945. He was Finance Director for the City of Odessa. He married
Eileen Carpenter in December 1999 in Odessa. He was a member of First United Methodist Church.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Nugent and Bess Hinds; and his first wife, Doris Hinds, in 1996; also his sister, Margaret Henderson in 2002.
He is survived by his wife Eileen Hinds of Odessa; daughter, Beth Hinds Birdsong of Seattle, Wash.; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brother, James Earl Hinds of Belton; other family members, Billy Max Triplett of League City, Carol Logan of Austin, Betsy Triplett Hurt of Odessa, and Patti Hatcher of Pleasanton.
Graveside services will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 12, 2005, at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Memorial Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bill Heggemeier officiating.

Audrey Lee Stokes Nichols
Odessa - Audrey Lee Stokes Nichols, 93, a longtime resident of Odessa passed away Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2005, in Denison.
She was born May 20, 1911, to Will Joe and Lyvonnia Stokes in Seawright, Alabama. She and her family moved to the Tahoka area and began farming. This is where she met, fell in love and married
a wonderful man, Wilburn Lee “Jody” Nichols, on Feb. 27, 1932. They moved back and forth from the farming community of Tahoka to Arkansas. The family grew as they finally settled in Odessa in 1948. In 1969 she started working for the First Baptist Church Children’s Nursery and retired in 1992. She loved the children she cared for just like they were her own. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother, she always put her family first and she would help in anyway she could. She will be missed by all that knew her.
She is survived by her daughter, Pat Waller and her late husband, Jerry of Stafford, and Wilda Morris and husband, W.S., of Carlsbad, N.M.; son, Troy Nichols and his wife, Glenna, of Denison. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Jeff Waller, Jody Boone and husband, John, Laura Denniston and husband, Jack, Barbara Walker and husband, Kevin, Walter Morris, Jay Nichols, and Kathy Nelson and husband, Rory. She also has 16 great-grandchildren, Alex, Scott, Tracy, Johnny, Ryan, Courtney, Jasmine, Brittany, James, Chase, Josh, Jennifer, Trisha, Troy, Katie and Kirsten; and six great-great-grandchildren, Austin, Clayton, Landon, Ashley, Alyssa, and CJ; sisters, Laurue Johnson of Lamesa, and Mozelle Young of Sundown; Brother, Bob Stokes of Midland. Audry also had many nieces; nephews; and friends.
Services are scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 12, 2005, at 3 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Nuel ‘Boss’ Long
Odessa - Nuel Long, “The Legend in his Field, ” was born in Haskell County, Texas, on July 12, 1926. He was the fourth child of 13 children, born to Francis Marion Long and Doris Jones Long of Travis County and Wise County. He was raised on a farm near Swenson Ranch. He went to a country school at Paint Creek, Texas. At the age of 18, Mr. Long volunteered for the U.S. Navy during World War II. He served abroad the Battleship USS Nevada at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. He served on other ships in the Pacific Ocean area. Mr. Long fought in the Battle of Okinawa; the Battle of Kymareta; the Battle of Marshall Islands; the Battle of Coral Sea; and the Battle Leyte, Philippines.
He returned home in September 1946 and got a job as an oilfield roughneck for Noble Drilling Company and he was also a farmer. Mr. Long raised five of his orphaned brothers and sisters after his father died. He also took care of his mother and grandmother in Haskell County. Nuel Long married
Doris Kirby on July 20, 1954, in Lovington, N.M. They were married
50 years. She already had three infant children Linda, age 3, Bill, age 2, and Beth, age 7 months, from a previous marriage. The Long family moved to Odessa in 1955. They went on to have seven children of their own and kept several stray children from time to time. Mr. Long helped many needy people with food, money and jobs.
Mr. and Mrs. Long are the parents of 10 children: Linda Adams Keener of Encinitas, California, William “Bill” Adams, Elizabeth Long Voyles, Charles Richard Long, Dixie Long Sletten, Dolly Long McLane, Steve Nuel Long, twins, Beverly Long Vick and Christopher Ray Long, all of Odessa, and Meron Leon Long, deceased.
Mr. Long became a driller and toolpusher for many oil companies including Loffland Brothers Drilling Company for 12 years; FWA Drilling Company for 12 years; and Rod Ric Drilling Company for 12 years. He said he was an unpaid consultant for Exxon Oil Company for many years and had letters and awards from them.
Mr. Long trained hundreds of young men to become roughnecks and drillers in the oilfields, some of these men later became doctors and lawyers. Mr. Long was given the name the “Legend of the Oilfield” because he was so well known and respected by so many men that he trained to work in the oilfields. Many tales were told about him as a being a “tough teacher” and he was even known to paddle some men, if they didn’t work safely. He trained some men in the summer that later became businessmen in Odessa. Mr. Long had worked in the oilfields of the Permian Basin for over 50 years when he retired. Mr. Long was a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 4372 of Odessa. Mr. Long was member of Vine Baptist Church. He is also listed in the “Who’s Who in America and the World, ” 13th Edition.
Mr. Long was a good husband and father. He was very much loved by his wife and children. He was a hard working, honest, and fair Christian man. He was a good provider for his family. He was not rich nor poor, but he had made more money than most men. He loved his wife and family very much, and he loved his job. He was a good friend and neighbor. Every summer on vacation he took his family to far and distant places like New York City, Washington, D.C., Canada, Hawaii, and every state in the union for pleasure and education.
Mr. Long did not drink, but he loved to dance. Mr. Long will be sadly missed by his whole family and friends. His memory will always be with those who loved him.
Visitation will be at Odessa Funeral Home from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today. Pallbearers will be friends and grandsons. Services are set for 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 12, 2005, at Vine Baptist Church with the Rev. Johnny Touchstone officiating. Burial to follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
