Hale L. ‘Mac’ McRee
Trent - Hale L. “Mac” McRee, of Odessa, was born Feb. 14, 1931, and left this world Thursday, Feb. 17, 2005.
Hale was born in Trent to Henry Hale McRee and Aletha McGowan. He was a familiar face with the oilfield for over forty years after coming to Odessa in 1954 where he met his wife Marjorie Bell. They married
on Jan. 6, 1956, in Odessa and recently celebrated 49 years of marriage and his 74th birthday. He was his family’s “Valentine.” He was a decorated hero of the Korean War earning a Bronze Star for valor under fire.
He was a loving Christian man who put his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ utmost in his life and lived a life exemplifying it.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother; a sister, Virginia Strawn; son-in-law, Matthew Lummus; and nephew, Garth Strawn.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Marjorie; son, Leslie McRee and wife, Silvia; daughters, Terri Waldrop and husband, Butch, of Midland; and daughter, Erin Lummus of Odessa. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Christopher Lummus, Rebecca Lummus, Travis McRee, David Waldrop and Jennifer Waldrop; sister, Carolyn Benitez of San Marcos; former brother-in-law, James Strawn; several nieces; and nephews.
Graveside services will be Saturday at Trent cemetery with Pastor Cory Ward officiating. Services are entrusted to Starbuck’s Funeral Home of Merkel.
The family would like to thank Home Hospice; Texas State Veteran’s Home in Big Springs; and Avalon Place in Odessa.

Douglas Leon Heath
Whitney - Douglas Leon Heath, 82, of Whitney, died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2005, at his residence.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at the Whitney Church of Christ with Mr. Bruce Martin officiating. Interment will be at Heath cemetery.
He was born March 1, 1922, to George Douglas and Maurice (Dollar) Heath in Huron Community.
Douglas was an air operations specialist during World War II performing duties in the China-Burma-India Theaters recording departures and arrivals of airplanes coming into the air base, keeping records of airplanes while in flight, keeping hourly status of all airplanes assigned to base, prepared flight forms, assigned crews to planes, dispatched planes to destinations and prepared operations orders. He married
Ann Melcher on July 28, 1950, at the Hillsboro Church of Christ. They lived in Odessa from 1950 to 1983 and then moved to Whitney in June of 1983 and opened D & A Super Stop in 1984. He had worked as a foreman for Continental EMSCO. He supported the American Legion and the 2604 Volunteer Fire Department and was a member of the Whitney Church of Christ.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ann, on Oct. 28, 2004; and an infant son, Stephen Heath.
He is survived by his children: Karen Pearson and husband, David, of Whitney; Mike Heath and wife, Sadie of Odessa, and Dale Heath of Marble Falls; 7 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Loretha J. Payne
Odessa - Services for Loretha J. Payne, age 91, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 19, 2005, at Walkers Chapel Church of God in Christ, 525 S. Grandview Ave., with Elder James D. Porter officiating. Burial will be at Rose Hill cemetery under the direction of Martinez Funeral Home.
Mrs. Payne went home to be with God Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2005. She was born Nov. 3, 1913, in Round Rock, Williamson County. Mrs. Payne was a retired school teacher of Ector County Independent School District. After moving to Odessa, she began teaching history and social studies at Blackshear, then high school, later Jr. High for 23 years, and did substitute teaching in other schools after her retirement. She firmly believed that she was able to teach anybody something that would carry them further in life. She was a member and the church mother of the Walkers Chapel Church. Mrs. Payne accepted Christ at an early age and possessed a powerful love for God, her family, friends, and church. She will be greatly missed by all.
Survivors include a son, Richard S. White Jr.; granddaughters, Carolyn Porter of Odessa, Loretha Hassan of Pheonix, Ariz., Bria McDonald of Dallas, Shauna Bonds of Pheonix, Ariz., Camillie White of Cleveland, Ohio, and Patricia White of Almagordo, N.M.; grandsons, James D. Porter of Odessa, Van Richard Graves of Odessa, Shifton White of Paris, Calif., Richard White of Calif., Hobert White and Steven White, both of Phoenix, Ariz.; 15 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and a host of friends.
L.E. ‘Cotton’ Williams
Odessa - L.E. “Cotton” Williams, 71, of Odessa, passed away Feb. 17, 2005, at Medical Center Hospital. He was born April 16, 1933, in Palestine. He was retired from Atlantic Richfield for 30 years and served in the U.S. Army. Cotton will always be a highly favored person in our lives. He was a wonderful man who loved his wife, family, and friends. He liked dancing, and shuffleboard and repairing things; may he eternally enjoy his new life in heaven.
Cotton was preceded in death by his parents, Jeff W. and Myrtis Williams, Jack Williams, Marsha Williams, Laverne Lanham; and baby, Jeremy.
Cotton is survived by his wife, Shirley Jean Williams; sons, Jeff Williams and wife, Andrea, and Larry Williams and wife, Dana, of Decatur, Ala.; daughters, Linda Baer and husband, Jimmy, Mickey and Sue Wilson, and Geri McBride; sisters, Helen Jackson and Lola Logsdon, both of Odessa, Edna Woodard of Dallas, Mabelle Palmer of Fort Worth. Cotton also has nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 3 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 19, 2005, at Sunset Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Jimmy Braswell officiating.

Kathryn Allene (Cobb) ‘Kathy’ Amburgey
ALAMOGORDO, N.M. - Kathryn Allene (Cobb) “Kathy” Amburgey, 68, of Alamogordo, N.M., left us to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2005, at her home.
Kathryn was born November 26, 1936 in Muskogee, Oklahoma to William “Woody” and Naomi (Lamascus) Cobb. Her family moved from Muskogee to Odessa, Texas, when she was in the 6th grade. She was an honor student and head majorette at Odessa High School. At her high school graduation in 1954 she walked down the aisle side-by-side with her high school sweetheart, and future husband, Floyd Amburgey, whom she married
in September 1954. During their years together they lived in California, Germany, Texas, Alabama, Arizona, Florida and New Mexico. They lived in Las Cruces, High Rolls, Cloudcroft and Alamogordo during the past thirty years in New Mexico. Kathryn worked for the U.S. Government at White Sands Missile Range in 1954-55 and subsequently in the 1980s. She retired from the U.S. Forest Service in the administration office of the Lincoln National Forest, in 1994. She started the first Women’s Aglow in Alamogordo, and was the president of the Alamogordo Chapter and later the president of the Women’s Aglow area board. She was instrumental in founding numerous chapters of Women’s Aglow. She is known for her love of Christ, a deep understanding of the Bible, her Bible study teachings, and her love for her family. She was a member of the Cottonwood Christian Fellowship.
Survivors include her husband, Floyd Amburgey of the family home; a daughter, Michelle Hale of Alamogordo; eight grandchildren, Shawn Amburgey and his wife Lanessa of Albuquerque, Elisha Amburgey, Joshua Amburgey, Danielle Amburgey and Ian Amburgey, all of Cloudcroft, and Noel Castanon, Shiloh Castanon and Hannah Castanon, all of Alamogordo; a great grandchild, Traeh Amburgey of Albuquerque; and two sisters, Pat Johnson and her husband Lowell of Las Cruces, and Janice Mills and her husband Oliver of Los Alamos.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Robert “Robby” Amburgey and Floyd “Bubba” Amburgey; and a granddaughter, Erica Amburgey.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Hamilton-O’Dell Chapel with Pastor Robert Smith officiating.
Interment will be in Monte Vista cemetery.
Friends may call Saturday from 5 until 7 p.m. at Hamilton-O’Dell Funeral Home in Alamogordo.

Wm. Bert Frost
ODESSA - Wm. Bert Frost, 63, a long time resident of Odessa went to be with the Lord on Friday, Feb. 25, 2005, at his home with his family by his side.
He was born Dec. 31, 1941, in Monahans to Jim Frank and Annis Frost. He came to Odessa in 1955 with the opening of Frost Bakery where he worked for numerous years. He attended the University of Texas at Arlington for one year and graduated from the American Bakery Institute in Chicago, IL. He was a devoted member of Temple Baptist Church. He married
Tana E. Johnston May 16, 1964 in Odessa.
Bert was a loving and caring husband, father, brother and Papa. He volunteered with Meals On Wheels, also committed to other Christian Ministries, including Hospice, Concerned Americans and others.
He treasured camping with his family and was a great story teller.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Annis Frost.
He is survived by his wife Tana Frost of Odessa son, “Little” Bert Frost and wife Debbie and daughters, Ashlie and Meaghin Frost of Odessa, daughter, Wende and husband Martin Ramos and children, Benjamin, Dean and Rachel Ramos of Odessa, brothers, Jack Frost and wife Colene of Odessa, Jim Frost and wife Emily of Bolivar, MO.; sister-in-law and her husband Jimmy and Vickie Moore and mother-in-law, LaClara Johnston all of Allen, TX, and numerous nieces and nephews.
There will be a visitation from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 27, 2005, at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
Memorial services will be held 4 p.m. Monday, Feb. 28, 2005, at Temple Baptist Church with Rev. Griffin Jones officiating.

Paul Maxwell
Odessa - Paul Maxwell passed away Thursday, Feb. 24, 2005, after a brief illness at Medical Center Hospital.
He was born in Oklahoma City March 5, 1934, to William and Frankie Lou Maxwell, who both preceded him in death; along with his brother Donald Maxwell.
Paul married
Jean Marie Crosbie June 6, 1954, in Oklahoma City and they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last June.
Paul was a master mechanic and worked for International Harverster in Oklahoma City and El Paso, before becoming the service manager at French Tool and Supply Company in Odessa in 1968. He retired from there 20 years later. Over the years Paul was an avid golfer and enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. He had a passion for the lake and enjoyed every weekend possible at their second home at Lake Colorado City.
Paul is survived by his wife, of 50 years, Jean Maxwell of Odessa; his sons, Ronal Maxwell and wife, Tammy, of Canyon Lake, Terry Maxwell and wife, Rachel, of Odessa, and Mike Maxwell and wife, Bridget, of Rio Rancho, N.M.; his daughters, Kym Maxwell and Leslie Griffin, both of Odessa; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Our family wishes to thank everyone that has been there for the last couple of years that offered love and support for Paul and Jean.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. today at St. Barnabas’ Episcopal Church, 4141 Tanglewood Lane.

Christine L. Varner
LUBBOCK - A Celebration of Life for Christine L. Varner, 59, of Lubbock, will be today at the Escondido room of the County Line Restaurant.
She passed from this life Friday, Feb. 18, 2005. She was born June 17, 1945, in Crane to Jack and Alta Lewis. She married
Billy Wayne Varner Sr. April 4, 1964, and moved to Lubbock in 1967. She graduated from Texas Tech University receiving her B.A. in English in 1982 and earned her Doctorate of Jurisprudence from the Texas Tech University School of Law in 1985. She practiced law in Lubbock and was active in many civic and professional organizations and was a published author. Retiring in 1998, she pursued her passion for wildlife photography and gardening.
She was preceded in death by her husband Feb 10, 2005; her parents; and a sister, Sherry Tracy Ohuma.
Survivors include two sons, Billy W. Varner Jr. and Andrew T. Varner, both of Lubbock; step-daughters, Terry Amsberry, Donna Savage and Leslie Homstead, all of Plano; three grandchildren; four sisters, Melodie Lewis and Jackie Sanders, both of New Orleans, La., Annette Sims of Odessa, and AnnaBeth LameBull of Grants, N.M; as well as numerous nephews and nieces.
Josephine Cotton McBride
ODESSA - Josephine Cotton McBride, 71, of Odessa, passed away on Feb. 24, 2005, at her residence. Josephine was born on May 21, 1933 in Abernathy, TX, where she also attended school.
Services are scheduled for Monday, Feb. 28, 2005, at 10 a.m. at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Mike Bartlett officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Services are entrusted to Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.
Josephine was preceded in death by her parents, Walties and Lucy Jane Cotton; her husband, Doyle G. McBride; son, David Ray McBride; 3 brothers, Russell, Ernest, and Leroy Cotton; and a sister, Imogene Amerson.
Josephine is survived by her children, Bobbie Jo Dirden and husband Richard, Mary Smith and husband Barney, Michael Gene McBride and wife Anna, Russell Wayne McBride and wife Reba all of Odessa; her sister, Janett Hays of Lubbock. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren and 2 on the way as well as many nieces and nephews.

Gloria Fuentes Ramirez
ROUND ROCK - Gloria Fuentes Ramirez, 39, of Round Rock, Texas, passed away on February 23, 2005, in Austin, Texas.
She was born on July 5, 1965, in Odessa, Texas to Eufemio “Memo” and Rosa Fuentes Ramirez.
She is survived by her son, Donny Ray Carrasco of Denver, Colorado; Daughters, Valerie McGuire and her husband Christopher of Round Rock, Texas and Melanie Nuncio of Round Rock, Texas; Mother, Rosa Ramirez of Odessa, Texas; Sisters Cecilia Ramirez of Round Rock, Texas and Dora Ramirez of Phoenix, Arizona; Brothers, John Ramirez and his wife Alice of Round Rock, Texas, Rick Ramirez of San Antonio, Jerry Ramirez of Fort Worth, Texas, and Leo Ramirez and his wife Janice of Fort Worth, Texas; Grandson, Dominic Nuncio of Round Rock, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her father, Eufemio “Memo” Ramirez.
The Rosary was recited at 7 p.m. Thursday, February 24, 2005, at Beck Funeral Home, 15709 Ranch Rd. 620, Round Rock, Texas.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 2:30 p.m. Friday, February 25, 2005, at St. Williams Catholic Church in Round Rock.
Interment followed at St. John’s cemetery in Georgetown, Texas.
