Jay Allen Smith

Odessa - Jay Allen Smith, 65, of Odessa, died after a lengthy illness at his residence.
Jay was born Jan. 8, 1940, in Redding, Calif., to Harold and Helen Smith, who preceded him in death. His best friend and companion of many years, Virginia also preceded him in death. He retired from AMOCO Production Corp. after many years of service.
He is survived by two sons and families, James Lee Smith and wife, Tamara, and son, Landry, all of Saginaw, and son, Harold Jay Gerhart and wife, Michelle, and daughter, Michon, all of San Angelo; sisters, Sharon Walden of Odessa, and Glenna Pool Williams of Kingsland; and nieces, Melody Arnold of Hobbs, N.M., Kim Karam of Plano, and Le-a Baze of Gardendale.
Jay’s wishes were to be cremated and his ashes entrusted to his sons.
Services are entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.

Roger Cecil ‘Grizzly’ Williams

Milburn, Okla. - Roger Cecil “Grizzly” Williams was born Dec. 19, 1952, in Covington, Ky., and passed away Monday, July 18, 2005.
He lived in Odessa for most of his life. He was a laborer and a member of Terrace Hills Baptist Church.
Roger loved to talk on the C.B. radio. He spent hours listening to other C.B. guys. He was a loving and caring person. Even though he was C-3 quadriplegic the last six-and-a-half years, he still had the best attitude of anyone I’ve ever known. Roger will be missed so much. We want to thank his nurse’s aides, Ginger Allen, Carla Brant, Barbara Simpson and Lyn Marr for taking such good care of Roger and loving him so much. We know he would have hugged you many times, if he had been able to. He loved everyone.
Thank you to all the doctors and nurses at Medical Center Hospital, who helped care for Roger these past years. God bless you all!
He is preceded in death by his wife, Rhonda Gayle Riley Williams.
His survivors include his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Harold and Ruth Ann Riley; brother-in-law, Noble Riley and wife, Kathy; two nieces, Shelley Riley and husband, Jeff, and Mallary Jean; great-nephew, Hunter Alexander; and grandmother, Oniebell Lucas.
Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. today, July 21, at Conden Grove in Milburn, Okla., with the Rev. Kenneth McCarthick officiating. Arrangements are by Clark Funeral Services of Tishomingo, Okla.

Judge Jacob Allen Moore

Rankin - Judge Jacob Allen Moore, 90, passed away June 20, 2005, in Odessa.
Allen was born on April 14, 1915, in the Indian Territory, Okla., to Jacob and Carie Moore. Allen grew up in Stephenville and McCamey. He graduated from McCamey High School.
When the war broke out, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was sent to Wendover Field, Utah, where the 308th Bomb Group was being formed for the Burma-China Theatre. While in the service, he was stationed in Burma, India, and China. He served as a staff sergeant under Major General Chennault’s 14th U.S. Air Force command as an intelligence officer in the 308th Bomb Group, more commonly known as “Chennault’s Flying Tigers.”
After completing his service with an honorable discharge, he returned to West Texas, where he ventured several businesses in Denver City, McCamey and Rankin. He, along with his wife, Ellen, settled in Rankin. He eventually opened an oilfield construction company that he ran until his retirement.
Mr. Moore served as a county auditor and county judge for Upton County, as well as mayor of the city of Rankin. He supported the Upton County 4-H Club and its many accomplishments. He loved Rankin and was proud to be a part of the community. His many friends throughout the years were earned. Those friendships were never forgotten.
Mr. Moore was preceded in death by his wife, Ellen Moore; parents, Jacob and Carie Moore, “Tuffy” and “J.C.”; brothers and wives, Lucille and Margie, respectively; and his brother-in-law, “Robbie” Robinson.
He is survived by two sons, Allen Moore and his wife, Shelley, and their children Kenny, Aaron, Brenna, Megan and Anthony, and Jacob Moore and his wife, Nancy; one daughter, Ann Kessler and her husband, Mack, as well as her children, Tracy and Mindy; two sisters, Jean Keffer and her husband, Jim, and Margaret Robinson; and one brother, Bill Moore and his wife, Val; nieces and nephews, Barbara Allen Roberson and husband, Nick, of London, England. Mona Jean Gedney and her husband, Clark, of West Lafayette, Ind., State Representative Jim Keffer and his wife, Leslie, of Eastland; State Representative Bill Keffer and his wife, Liz, of Dallas, Marilyn and Eddie Dunn of Jasper, William “Stuff” Moore of Austin, Margaret Ann Sartain of Dallas, and Carol Ann Moore of Brownwood. Four grandchildren also survive him, Kendra Moore, Seth Allen Adcock, Kayley Bowerman and Amber Fuentes.
Funeral Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 23, at the First Baptist Church of Rankin. Arrangements are under the direction of Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home of Crane.

Benjamin Franklin Kerr

ODESSA - We are celebrating the life of Benjamin Franklin Kerr who was born Jan. 4, 1926, in Stephenville to Ada Roe and Berry Kerr. He was one of six children in the Fort Worth area.
He married Betty Jo Anderson on Aug. 21, 1948, in Andrews, Texas, and was the father of three children, Benny Kerr of Odessa; Betty Eichert of McKinney, Texas; and Jimmy Kerr of San Antonio, Texas. He had six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He owned Kerr’s Welding in Odessa for 29 years and was an active member and volunteer of the Senior Citizen’s Dance Group of Odessa.
He went to be with the Lord on June 24, 2005, at the age of 78 after a valiant battle with diabetes and alzheimers.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 27, 2005, at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel. A graveside service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 28, 2005, in Acton, Texas.
He will be missed greatly by his large family and many friends.
Memorials can be made to the Diabetes Foundation or the Alzheimer’s Association.
Funeral services are entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.

Kenneth Douglas Morrell

ODESSA - Kenneth Douglas Morrell, age 71, passed away Friday, June 24, 2005, at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa, Texas.
He was born Feb. 3, 1934, in Longstreet, La. He served in the U.S. Navy and was a member of the Baptist Church.
He married Nedra Warren on April 9, 1994, in Odessa. He worked for El Paso Natural Gas, and owned several businesses in Goldsmith. He was a 32nd Degree Mason.
His brother, George Morrell, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Nedra Morrell of Goldsmith, Texas; daughter, Tammy Dian Morrell-Harris of Bossier City, La.; stepson, Dr. Joe Sasin of Lubbock, Texas; stepdaughters, Cynthia Warren and Becky Yancey, both of Odessa; brothers, James Morrell and David Morrell, both of Odessa; sisters, Sandra Rowan of Houston, Texas; and Janie Ward of Center, Texas; and four grandchildren, Andrew, Kevin, Christopher and Taylor.
There will be a family visitation from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. today at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, June 27, 2005, at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel with James Bishop officiating and James Porter assisting.

Kenneth Eugene Scates

ODESSA - Kenneth Eugene Scates was born on June 29, 1921, in Alma, Arkansas. He passed away on June 24, 2005, at Parks Methodist Nursing Home center! in Odessa, Texas. He will be remembered as a devoted and loving husband, father, “PaPaw” and friend.
Mr. Scates married Mary Parsons on August 30, 1942, in Keota, OK. They moved to Flagstaff, AZ, where they resided briefly prior to Mr. Scates induction into the U.S. Army. He served overseas for three and one-half years in the European Theatre during World War II with General George Patton’s 3rd Army, earning the rank of Master Sergeant. Before the Allied Invasion, he was stationed in Framlingham, England, as part of an anti-aircraft gunnery crew. He then participated in the invasion at Normandy on D-Day at Omaha Beach, fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was the recipient of a Bronze Star and a number of unit citations.
Following the war, Mr. Scates worked for McMillan Oilfield Construction Company in Long Beach, CA; He was transferred to Snyder, TX, in 1949. After moving to Midland for a short time, Mr. Scates settled in Odessa in 1951, where he was a co-founder and partner in Basin Earth Boring Company, and subsequently, Permian Rathole Drilling, Inc. He was instrumental in the development and use of air circulation drilling equipment in the oilfield and construction drilling industries.
Mr. Scates was a member of Temple Baptist Church, served on the Board of Directors of the Permian Basin Oil Show, was a Past-President of the Odessa Downtown Lions Club, and a member of the H.A. McFarland 1338 Masonic Lodge. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Scottish Rites of El Paso.
Mr. Scates was also a devoted Permian Panther football fan. He enthusiastically followed Permian athletics from the school’s opening in 1959, seldom missing a football practice or game, until October 2004. He served as President of the PHS Football Booster Club in 1968-69, and one of the highlights of his life was the dedication to him in the 1982-83 Panther Football Yearbook.
Mr. Scates was devoted to his wife, Mary, was a proud father and grandfather, and loved spending time visiting and sharing stories with family and friends. He was an avid fisherman and hunter from boyhood, loved camping and traveling, and spent many happy times with friends and family in pursuit of those hobbies.
Mr. Scates is survived by his wife, Mary of Odessa; his son Michael of Plano, TX; daughter and son-in-law, Jan and Dr. Steve Brown of Odessa; grandchildren, Trevor Pen and Tyler Penn of Arlington, TX; Matthew Scates of Austin; Emily (Scates) Grover and her husband Vinnie of Richardson, TX; Jeff Brown and his wife Erica of Odessa; Amy Brown Ortiz and her husband, Steven of Odessa; and two great-grandchildren, Meaghan Quiroz and Alliette Brown, both of Odessa; and numerous nieces, nephews, and a host of extended family and friends.
Mr. Scates is preceded in death by his father and mother, Labe and Lela Scates, and two sisters, Labie Lee Rose and Ruth Scates.
The family would especially like to thank the staff at Parks Methodist Nursing Center for their kindness and devoted care for Mrs. Scates.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 26, 2005, from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Frank Wilson Funeral Home. Services are scheduled for Monday, June 27, 2005, at Temple Baptist Church, with the Reverend Griffin Jones officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to Parks Methodist Retirement Village Education Fund, to Temple Baptist Church, or to the Odessa Downtown Lions Club.
Services entrusted to Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors.

Mackie Gene Scoggin

MIDLAND - Mackie Gene Scoggin passed away Friday, June 24, 2005 in Midland.
He was born Dec. 29, 1927, in Mills County, Texas, to Addie Mae McCurdy Scoggin.
Mackie grew up in Clyde, Texas, and graduated from Clyde High School in 1947. He then attended Hardin Simmons University for one year.
Mackie married Billie Jones Aug. 21, 1953, in Kermit, Texas; they would have celebrated their 52nd anniversary this August.
He worked with El Paso Natural Gas for 35 years and after retiring he worked with United Industries for 12 years and then with Shelton Specialties for three years. Mackie was a member of Crestview Baptist Church.
Mackie is survived by his loving wife, Billie of Midland; his son, Tim Scoggin of Huntsville, Texas; his daughter, Kristie Scoggin of Dallas, Texas; and his sister, Billie Jo Emmerson of Lubbock, Texas.
Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday, June 28, 2005, at Ellis Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. John Gerlach officiating and Ty Morris assisting. Arrangements are under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Crestview Baptist Church Building Fund, 3300 Thomas Ave., Midland, TX 79703, or the charity of your choice.

Vaughn Turner

Tulsa, Okla. - Vaughn Turner, 70, of Dewey, Okla., died Wednesday, June 22, 2005, in Tulsa, Okla.
The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. today at the Walker-Brown Funeral Home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Walker-Brown Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Paul Schubert officiating. Arrangements are by Walker-Brown Funeral Home. Final committal rights will be at the Dewey cemetery.
Vaughn was born Sept. 11, 1934, in Boise City, Okla., to Bee Carl and Maurita “Doll” Turner. He married Pat Collier on Dec. 31, 1958, in Odessa. Vaughn served in the U.S. Army Gunnery Unit in Alaska during the Korean conflict.
He was a people person and related well with children. Vaughn enjoyed the outdoors; he liked hunting, golfing, fishing and camping. The Turners were founding members of the Abundant Life Church in Bartlesville, Okla., and Vaughn had a tremendous love for Jesus.
Vaughn was preceded in death by his parents, Bee Carl and Maurita Turner; and one brother, Carl Turner.
He is survived by his wife, Pat Turner of Tulsa, Okla.; daughters, Teresa and her husband, Eric Anderson, and Kelly and her husband, Jim Hatfield, both of Denver, and Carla and her husband, Jon Bonner, of Atlanta; son, Corey and his wife, Misty Turner, of Odessa; sisters, Margaret Axling of Spokane, Wash., and Cindy of Dallas; and 16 grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Food Pantry at Abundant Life Church, 601 Southeast Delaware Ave., Bartlesville, OK 74003.

Mary Jean Hoover Mayfield

Levelland - Mary Jean Hoover Mayfield was born February 20, 1927, in Marionville, Penn. to mother, Mabel Haslett, and father, Warren Hoover, and died Sept. 5, 2005, in Levelland, Texas, at the age of 76 years.
She moved to Texas in 1935, and has been a resident of Levelland since 1982. She attended college at West Texas State in Canyon, Texas, where she met Gene Mayfield. They married in Pampa, Texas, on January of 1950. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Mayfield was known as a very respected lady who would help anyone in need, and also was a very private person.
Survivors: Husband, Gene Mayfield; daughter, Rhonne Gary of Amarillo, Texas; sons, Steve Mayfield of Grapevine, Texas, and Stan Mayfield of Lubbock, Texas; sister, Katie Bryant of Pampa, Texas; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her three brothers; and one sister.
Memorial services will be held at on at 2 p.m. today, September 10, 2005, at Head Duarte Funeral Home with the Rev. Steve Vernon, of the First Baptist Church, officiating.
Memorial donations may be directed to Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch or a charity of your choice.

Paul L. Mendes

Las Cruces, N.M. - Paul L. Mendes, 75 years old, of Las Cruces, N.M., died Tuesday, May 24, 2005, at Memorial Medical Center in Las Cruces, N.M.
Paul was born April 2, 1930, in Balmorhea to Balente and Tomasa Mendes. Paul was a resident of the Las Cruces area since about 1956. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict in Germany and had retired from White Sands Missile Range as a security guard in 1987. He was also a member of the Catholic Church attending Ste. Genevieve’s Catholic Church.
Paul is survived by four brothers, John Mendes, Ramon Mendes and Inez Mendes, all of Las Cruces, N.M., and Balente Mendes Jr. of Odessa; six sisters, Manuela Borunda, Yolanda Mendes, and Alicia Munoz, all of Las Cruces, N.M.; Petra Chaves of Pecos, and Carolina Mendes and Oralia Mendes, both of Odessa; and stepsisters, Amparo Galindo and Elena Villarreal, both of Odessa; and many nieces and nephews also survive him.
Besides his parents, Balente and Tomasa; a sister, Mary Benavidez; and a nephew, Tomas “Tommy” Mendes preceded him in death.
The Funeral Liturgy will be at 9 a.m. today, May 27, at Ste. Genevieve’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Martin Cordero officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Catholic cemetery.
Pallbearers will be: Juan Mendes Jr., Raymundo Mendes, Jaime Mendes, Nestor Borunda, John Ruiz Jr. and Andres Borunda.
Arrangements are by Getz Funeral Home.

Freddie Mitchell

Eunice, N.M. - Freddie Mitchell was born Dec. 16, 1935, in Wink to Alfred and Mary Mitchell. He went to be with the Lord Tuesday, March 29, 2005, in Hobbs, N.M., at the age of 69.
Funeral Services will be at 10 a.m. today at First Baptist Church in Eunice. The Rev. David Bonnell, assisted by the Rev. G.A. Magee will officiate. Burial will follow at Brunson Memorial cemetery.
Mr. Mitchell was a longtime resident of Eunice, N.M., moving from Wink in 1936. He attended Eunice, N.M., schools and was always a proud supporter of the Cardinals. He married Mary Ruth Hardison on May 10, 1953, in Eunice, N.M. Freddie worked in the oil field for many years, until moving to Wellfleet, Neb., in 1971 and returning to Eunice, N.M., in 1981. He was an avid golfer, also loved hunting, fishing and telling funny stories. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Eunice.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Mitchell of Eunice, N.M.; one son, David Mitchell of Hobbs, N.M.; four daughters, Janet Coder of Casper, Wyo., Susan Garcia of Carlsbad, N.M., Elizabeth Coder of Aurora, Colo., and Frances Smith of North Platte, Neb.; two brothers, Rusty Mitchell of Pennsville, N.J., and Joe Gary Mitchell of Kermit. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren; two great­grandchildren; and one special dog, Simon.
Services are entrusted to Calvary Funeral Home of Eunice, N.M.
