William ‘Boyd’ Swinney

Odessa - William “Boyd” Swinney, 66, of Odessa, passed away Saturday, July 16, 2005, at Avalon Place in Odessa after a lengthy illness.
Boyd was born March 17, 1939, in Sweetwater, Texas, to Wiley Marcus and Stella Faye Swinney.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Darrell Swinney.
Boyd is survived by his wife of 46 years, Sandra Swinney of Odessa; a son, Kevin Swinney of Rio Vista, Texas; a daughter, Deanna Bonnett and husband, Greg of Lubbock, Texas; two sisters, Barbara Ann Pate of Odessa, and Jaunice Klasing of Alta, Oklahoma; brother, Kenneth Wayne Swinney of Hobbs, New Mexico; and three grandchildren, Chris and Cherie Morrow of Fort Worth, and Brittney Bonnett of Lubbock, Texas.
Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. today, July 19, at the Sunset Memorial Chapel in Odessa with the Rev. Jess Little officiating. Interment to follow at Sunset memorial Gardens. Military honors will be provided by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 4372.
The family would like to express special thanks to the staff at Avalon Place and Odyssey Hospice for the care and compassion shown.
Memorial may be made to Odyssey Hospice, 2651 Parkway Blvd., Suite B, Odessa, TX.
Services are entrusted to Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.

L.C. ‘Red’ Davis

Odessa - L.C. “Red” Davis, 94, of Odessa, passed away Saturday, April 16, 2005, at his residence.
He was born July 22, 1910, to Ples Caleb and Mary Jane Davis in Sanger. He served his country in the Army Air Corp. He married Afton Hagar Jan. 22, 1944, in Abilene. He worked for Phillips Petroleum and for the Bobby Cox Companies and later retired as a building contractor. He was a dunker Baptist.
He was preceded in death by his wife, and his parents.
Survivors include his sons, L.C. Davis Jr. and Billy Davis, both of Odessa; Ray Davis of Abilene, and Roy Davis of Merkel; daughters, Jo Ann Clifton of Robert Lee, Mary Jo Domeier of Georgetown, Calif., and Shirley Qualls and Debbie West, both of Odessa; sisters, Fannie Pearl Townsend of Hereford, and Mary Ella Rice of San Antonio; 24 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 20, at Crescent Park Baptist Church with the Rev. Don Fankhauser officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Services are entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.

Joel Trimble Edwards

Abilene - Joel Trimble Edwards, 55, of Abilene, died Saturday April 16, 2005 at his home.
Joel was born April 14, 1950, in Odessa to Bill and Betty Edwards. Joel was a handful till the day he died. Joel attended the University of Texas in Austin and graduated from the University of Texas of the Permian Basin, where he met his wife, Sophie. He moved to Abilene in 1998 working with AT&T, before working in various Abilene car dealerships. He was a member of Kiwanis, Odessa and Abilene Jaycees, and a former Sunday school teacher at St. John’s in Odessa. Joel was a devoted husband and a dedicated father. His lasting memory will bring a smile to everyone who knew him. He made it a point to brighten everyone’s life around him. Joel will always be remembered for this selfless generosity, his great sense of humor and his overzealous storytelling. His love for his wife and family brought him the most joy in his life. Joel will be greatly missed.
Joel is survived by his wife of 29 years, Sophie of Abilene; his son, Joel of Abilene; his son, Ben of Austin; his daughter, Rachel of Abilene; his son, David of Abilene; his mother, Betty Edwards of Odessa; his sister, Patty Kinnard and her husband, Clay, of Odessa; and his brother, Kirk Edwards and his wife, Lori, of Odessa.
The memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 20, at the Episcopal Church of the Heavenly Rest, 602 Meander, in Abilene. After the service, family and friends are invited to the Parish Hall for sharing and fellowship.
The Edwards family respectfully requests that memorial contributions may be made in Joel’s name to the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, neurology department, or the Church of the Heavenly Rest in Abilene.

Johnnie Reagon ‘J.R.’ Foster

Midland - Johnnie Reagon Foster, better known as “J. R.” Foster, was called home to be with his Lord and Savior from his hospital bed at Medical Center Hospital Saturday, April 16, 2005.
Services will be at 3 p.m. today at Ellis Funeral Home Chapel with the Doctor John Gerlach officiating. Burial will follow at Resthaven cemetery.
He was born to Fred and Gertrude Bowen Foster in Newcastle Jan. 3, 1928. Dad attended school at a small two-room country school at Rabbit Creek in Young County. He graduated high school in Young County.
Dad served in the Army Air Force from 1948 through 1949. His name is included on the Veteran’s Wall of Honor on the courthouse square in Graham. Following his years in the service, he moved to Rankin where he met his truelove Norma Jo “Jodie” Stephenson. They were married in Miles Dec. 22, 1950. They were happily married until she was called to her Heavenly home March 10, 1991.
As an adult he accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior. Dad was currently a member of Crestview Baptist Church of Midland.
He worked many years as an owner operator of a trucking business in Floydada. Mom and Dad moved to Midland in 1981. Dad worked as a diesel mechanic for several years, until he decided to make a major change and learn an entirely new field. At the age when many were starting to retire, he became a treating engineer for Petroplex Acidizing. He retired from Petroplex in 1997.
The apples of his eye were his granddaughters and his great-grandchildren. One of Dad’s greatest pleasures was watching the girls play basketball in their various leagues and in high school.
Dad will be greatly missed not only by us his kids but also by the rest of his family, friends and former business associates. He had a sweet spirit and was kind to all he met. His sense of humor was a little dry but always present, even during the years that, because of illness, he struggled to breath.
His parents; his wife; and two sisters, Mattie Kincer and Evelyn Edwards, preceded him in death.
Surviving him are his son, Stephen Foster and wife, Donna, of Lubbock; his daughter, Vickie Foster of Midland; two granddaughters, Kristi Foster and Lindsay Harrell and husband, Kevin, both of Lubbock, four great-grandchildren, Tanner Foster, Hayden Harrell, Kaleb Harrell and Emma Foster, all of Lubbock. He is also survived by six siblings, Vollie Mixon of Lubbock, Bill Foster of Yuma, Ariz., James Foster and wife, Nelda, of Saint Augustine, La., Vancel Larry Foster and wife, Audrey, of Midland, Darvis Foster and wife, Midge, of Plainview, and Delores Hurlburt and husband, Jerry, of Pomona, Calif.
Pallbearers will be: Kevin Harrell, Tony Cunningham, Greg Foster, Jimmy Law, Galen Mannin and Danny law. Bryson Mannin will be the honorary pallbearer.
In lieu of flowers, The family requests that memorials be sent to the Forward by Faith Fund at Crestview Baptist Church, 3300 Thomas Ave., Midland, TX 79703.

Deidra Brynne Henry

Odessa - Deidra Brynne Henry, born Dec. 20, 1989, left us April 16, 2005, to be with our Lord in Heaven.
Deidra was a very popular young lady with a beautiful voice, she is now singing in God’s choir. She was a member of the National Jr. Honor Society and President of the Ector Jr. High All Girls Choir. Deidra brought a lot of sunshine to her loved ones lives. She will now shine upon us from the heavens up above.
She is preceded in death by her great-grandparents, James and Dora Hills, Ted and Beulah Johnson, Stella and Luther Henry, and Guy and Olian Whigham.
She is survived by her father, David B. Henry; her mom, Francis M. Henry; her mother, Marsha L. Hills; her sisters and brothers, Megan, Robert, Taryn, Isiah, Bryan and Michelle. Her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond and Frances Henry, Mr. and Mrs. C.V. “Rip” Ryan, Ms. Shirley Ryan, Mr. and Mrs. James and Roberta Pointer, Mr. and Mrs. Mike and Jeannie Hills; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins, as well as friends.
The family will receive visitors 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Frank W. Wilson Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Randall McDonald officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be: William Ryan, Shannon Gaylor, Jimmy Anderson, Jeffery Canon, Scott Trotter and Hayden Ryan
Services are entrusted to Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors.

Richard Lloyd ‘Big Un’ Mayfield

Odessa - Richard Lloyd “Big Un” Mayfield, 58, of Odessa, passed away Saturday, April 16, 2005, at the Hospice House.
He was born Feb. 2, 1947, in Abilene to R. M. and Beatrice Mayfield. He graduated from Odessa High School in 1965. He served in the National Guard. On March 9, 1967, he married Susan Buckaloo. He enjoyed spending time with his family. He loved sports and coached children’s baseball and basketball teams. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He worked for the Texas State Highway Department for 26 years, retiring in December 1991. He joined the Grandview Lions Club in 1988 and was an active member until his health would not allow him to participate. He attended Life Unlimited Church.
He is preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Betty Fairchild.
He is survived by his wife, Susan Mayfield of Odessa; sons, Richard Mayfield and wife, Teresa, and Timothy Mayfield, both of Odessa; daughters, LaVonda Howell and husband, John, of Llano, and Billie Terry and husband, Jason, of Odessa; sister, Christine Scott of Midland; four grandchildren, Richard Dohrer, Chad Mayfield, Blake Terry and Skylar Mayfield; uncles, Arthur Waldrop and Bill Waldrop; aunt, Ruby Smith; father-in-law and mother-in-law, George and Vera Buckaloo; and several brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 20, at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Don Palmer officiating. Military graveside honors will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens under direction of VFW Post no. 4372.
The family would like to thank, Doctor R. J. Patel, Doctor Khandelwal, Doctor Larry Oliver, the staff of the Permian Basin Dialysis Center, Nurses Unlimited and the Hospice House.
Memorials may be made to the West Texas Cancer Center or the Permian Basin Dialysis Center.
May God bless all, who supported Richard and his family throughout his lengthy illness.

Earl Louis Perkins

Midland - Earl Louis Perkins, of Los Angeles, was born on July 13, 1923, in Grand Forks, N.D. He died peacefully on that same day, 82 years later, surrounded by those who loved him most.
He was raised in Grand Forks by a large and loving, extended family. He attended the University of North Dakota until he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corp, where he served as a navigator in Europe during World War II. After the war, he graduated from UND, and in 1948, moved to Midland, Texas, as a geologist for Argo Oil Company. He married Dene Richardson in 1953, and they had two children, Corby and Marc. “Perk” moved his family in 1963 to Odessa and built a thriving service station business before returning to the oilfield as a consultant.
After his retirement, Perk and Dene built a home at Canyon Lake, Texas, where their children and grandchildren enjoyed many happy summers. Perk and Dene moved to Los Angeles in 2001 to be near those children and grandchildren.
Perk was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. He worked hard and played harder. He could build a house, rebuild an engine, grill a perfect steak and teach a toddler to swim. He loved bridge, poker with the boys at Orla, gin rummy, practical jokes involving chupacabras, old and new friends, family trips to North Dakota and feeding the fish at Lake of the Woods, searching for Mary Whitefeather, ice-cold margaritas, hunting for arrowheads, a meal anytime of the day at Eva’s Cafe, Sunday afternoons by the pool, anything by Edgar Rice Burroughs or Ayn Rand, gladiator movies, ribald stories, Trivial Pursuit, Scrabble and good opera.
He spent many happy summers hiking to the “dirty beach” with his grandchildren and sharing their zest for exploration. He was a scholar and a gentleman, and he knew every drinking song in the English language. His spelling was abysmal, but he was a relentless and pedagoguish grammarian, different from any other. He loved dogs, cats, feeding corn to his deer, and “The Last of the Mohicans.” He was proud of his North Dakota heritage but delighted in satirizing his home state; he taught us all that the state flower of North Dakota was mildew, and that the state tree was the telephone pole. We continue to chant “Why not, Minot?” On those rare occasions when it actually snowed in Texas, Perk would observe that it was “just like a letter from home.” He could point out an incise meander, a mammoth tusk, a meteor shower or a good Galliano with equal aplomb.
Perk always understood that our lives are not measured by the number of breaths that we take — but by the moments that take our breath away. He created a lifetime of these moments for us all.
A celebration of his life is planned for Nov. 26, 2005, in Midland. Togas optional.

Anna Bell Berry

ODESSA - Anna Bell Berry, 85, a longtime resident of Odessa, passed away Friday, June 3, 2005, at her residence.
She was born July 8, 1919, in Fayetteville, Ark., to Sigle and Laura Tannehill.
Anna Bell was an avid Bible reader. She was a stay-at-home Mom; she took care of her kids and a lot of the neighborhood kids. She loved to sew. She was a member of the Salvation Army.
She is preceded in death by her parents; and husband, Jones Edward Berry.
She is survived by her sons, Donald Jones Berry of Fort Worth and William Edward Berry of Odessa; daughter, Carole Ann Hardee of Sonora; brother, Ed Tannehill of Springdale, Ark.; sister, Amy Wood of Broken Arrow, Okla.; four grandchildren, Dyann Warren, Lamar Hardee, Mark Hardee and Brian Berry; and two great-grandsons, Kenneth Hardee and Bryson Berry.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 7, 2005, at RoseHill cemetery.
Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.

Lydia A. Burre

Leavenworth, Kan. - Lydia A. Burre, 97, of Leavenworth, Kan., passed away Wednesday, May 4, 2005, at Cushing Memorial Hospital in Leavenworth, Kan.
Lydia was born Oct. 9, 1907, in Leavenworth, Kan., to August Ode and Bertha Hettich Ode. On June 5, 1929, she married Karl E. Wikelski in Leavenworth, Kan. He preceded her in death May 3, 1978. She later married Anton W. ‘Tony’ Burre Oct. 2, 1980, in Leavenworth, Kan. He preceded her in death Jan. 8, 1994.
Lydia taught school for three years in Leavenworth County, Kan. She was a homemaker. Lydia was a longtime member of St. Paul Lutheran Church. She taught Sunday school, was the memorial chairperson for many years, was a member of the Ladies Aid for many years and was a member of Lutheran Women’s Missionary League. She was also a longtime volunteer for the Cushing Memorial Hospital Ladies Auxiliary.
She was preceded in death by three brothers; three sisters; and one grandson, Craig.
Lydia is survived by her daughters, Delores ‘Bill’ Landfair and Janet Lindgren, both of Dallas; five grandchildren, Todd, Timm, Shawn, Jeff and Terri; and five great-grandchildren, Joey, Freddie, Lydia, Steven and Lindsay.
Funeral Services will be at 10 a.m. today, May 7, 2005, at St. Paul Lutheran Church with the Rev. Ed Mease officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Muncie cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to St. Paul Lutheran Church, Seventh St. and Miami St., Leavenworth, KA 66048.

Mildred Sutton Burts

Odessa - Mildred Sutton Burts, 77, of Odessa, passed away Wednesday, May 4, 2005, at her residence.
She was born May 21, 1927, in Carthage to father, Allen Sutton, and mother, Lottie Hooker Sutton. Mrs. Burts was a homemaker.
Visitation for Mrs. Burts will be from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday at Martinez Funeral Home.
A Funeral Service will be at 2 p.m. Monday, May 9, at Bethlehem Baptist Church with the Rev. E.J. Miller officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill cemetery.
She is survived by her son, Lonnie Burts of Fort Worth; daughter, Barbara Burleson of Odessa; brother, Rev. Roscoe Sutton of Odessa; sister, Hazel Servance of Odessa; grandchildren, Cheryl Brooks and Daron Brooks, both of Odessa, and Angela Brooks of San Angelo; great-grandchildren, Desmond Brooks, Jakkia Brooks, Jonava Boalts and Destiny Boalts; and one great-great grandchild, Xavier Brooks.
Arrangements are under the direction of Martinez Funeral Home.

James ‘Jim’ Thomas

The Woodlands - James “Jim” Thomas, 76, passed away Tuesday, April 26, 2005.
Jim was born May 8, 1928, in Iraan, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Pat Thomas and son, James ‘Jimmy’ Thomas.
He is survived by his daughter, Taune and son-in law, Way Johnston; sister, Doris Riley; grandchildren, James Thomas and Jaymii, Kelli West and Brandy and husband Jeffrey Hinton; great-grandchildren, Kolton, Clayton and Cayleah.
Jim had a long career in the oil and gas industry and as a private pilot. ‘Big Jim’ was one of a kind. He enjoyed life with his loving wife of 54 years experiencing many travels and adventures. JaJa will be greatly missed but the sparkle in his eyes left a sparkle in our hearts.
A family inurnment will be held today, May 7, 2005.
Arrangements are by Forest Park The Woodlands Funeral Home.
