Luther Richardson

ODESSA -- Luther Perry (L.P.) Richardon Jr., 71, of Odessa, died Thursday, May 21, 1998, at Medical Center Hospital after a short illness.

Graveside services will be held at 9 a.m. today at Sunset Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Terry Pugh officiating. Arrangements by Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.

He was born in Auburn, Miss., and moved to Odessa in 1952 from Brookhaven, Miss. He was Pentecostal.

Survivors: Daughter, Connie Kerley of Odessa; sons, Ronald Richardson and Joey Richardson, both of Odessa; sister, Dixie Wallace of Brookhaven, Miss.; and three grandchildren.

Ramona Vasquez

BIG SPRING -- Ramona Vasquez, 66, of Big Spring, a homemaker, died Thursday, May 21, 1998, at her residence after a lengthy illness.

Rosary was said May 22, 1998, at Myers & Smith chapel. Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. today at Immaculate Heart of St. Mary Catholic Church with the Rev. Jerry McCarthy officiating. Burial will be at St. Joseph's cemetery in Stanton. Arrangements by Myers & Smith Funeral Home.

She was born in Caldwell and moved to Big Spring in 1990 from Levelland. She was Catholic.

Survivors: Husband, Raul Vasquez of Big Spring; son, Rene Vasquez of Levelland; daughters, Mary Rodriguez of Midland, Alice Matta of Andrews, Susie Escontrais and Yrma Rodriguez, both of Midland, Rosa Romero of Levelland, Angie Alvizo, Patsy Castilo and Peggy Escamilla, all of Big Spring; 50 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Delores Avila

BIG LAKE -- Delores (Lola) Baiza Avila, 86, of Big Lake died Wednesday, May 20, 1998, at Crane County Care Center.

Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. today at Richard W. Box Funeral Home Chapel. Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. at Saint Margaret's Catholic Church with the Rev. Barry McLean officiating. Burial will be at Glenrest cemetery. Arrangements are by Richard W. Box Funeral Homes.

She was born in Castolon and was a 35-year resident of Big Lake. She was Catholic.

Survivors: Daughters, Simona White and Lupe Alvarez, both of Odessa; son, Billy Joe Avila of Teague; sister, Luciana Garcia of Fort Stockton; 23 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.

Roberta Shortt

ALPINE -- Roberta Carter Shortt, 83, a retired registered nurse, died Wednesday, May 20, 1998, at Memorial Hospital in Midland after a short illness.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church. Burial will be at Elm Grove cemetery. Arrangements by Geeslin Funeral Home.

She was born in Roseland, Va. She was Presbyterian.

Survivors: Daughter, Lee Nitcholas of Carrollton; son, Thomas V. Shortt of Brewster County; sisters, Virginia Stratton, Hardenia Lincoln and Burnley Harvey, all of Nelson County, Va.; brother, Thomas Carter of Lynchburg, Va.; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Birdie Smith

ODESSA -- Birdie O. Smith, 80, of Odessa, a retired bus driver for the Ector County Independent School District, died Tuesday, May 19, 1998, at her residence.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Hubbard-Kelly chapel with the Rev. Larry Mobbs officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Arrangements by Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.

She was born in Sonora and had been a resident of Odessa since 1946.

Survivors: Husband, Lee O. Smith of Odessa; son, Billy Lee Smith of Midland; daughter, Virginia Ruth "Sissy" McClure of Odessa; sisters, Annie Scheile of Odessa, Lena Mae Ketron of Superior, Ariz., Ruth Jones of Mineral Wells, Betty Jo Smith of Phoenix; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Ethel Carrell

ODESSA -- Ethel Jo Carrell, 82, of Belton, Mo., a retired hairdresser, died Monday, May 18, 1998, at Research Belton Hospital in Belton, Mo.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. today at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Arrangements by Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.

She was born in Depew, Okla., and moved to Belton, Mo., from Odessa. She was a Baptist.

Survivors: Nephew, Ron Ragon of Berkley, Calif.; and niece, Gloria McMullen of Atlanta.

Eduardo Esparza

ANDREWS -- Eduardo Esparza, 7, of Andrews, a student, died Tuesday, May 19, 1998, in University Medical Center in Lubbock.

Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. today at McNett Funeral Home chapel. Mass will be celebrated at 4 p.m. Friday at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church with the Rev. Bernard Gully officiating. Burial will be at Andrews North cemetery. Arrangements by McNett Funeral Home.

He was born in Andrews. He was a Catholic.

Survivors: Parents, Salvador and Rosa Esparza of Andrews; brothers, Salvador Esparza Jr., Alex Esparza and Guillermo Esparza, all of Andrews; grandparents, Hilario and Alicia Esparza and Aurelio Acosta, all of Mexico; and great-grandparent, Eliseo Rodriguez of Mexico.

Chester Rice

DENVER CITY -- Chester "Arky" Rice, 90, of Odessa, a retired operator for Amoco Oil, died Tuesday, May 19, 1998, in Odessa.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Bob Webb officiating. Burial will be at Denver City Memorial Park. Arrangements by Ratliff Funeral Homes.

He was born in Joy and had been a resident of Denver City since 1949. He was a Baptist.

Survivors: Wife, Flora Rice; sons, Sylvester Rice of Lubbock, Ralph W. Rice of Odessa; daughter, Sunny Sue Manning of Josephine; brother, John C. Rice of Shawnee, Okla.; sister, Clara Germany of Hurst; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Pauline Boles

ODESSA -- Pauline Boles, 83, of Odessa, died Saturday, May 16, 1998, at Medical Center Hospital.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors Chapel with the Rev. Owen Sharp officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

She was born in Alma, Okla., and moved to Odessa in 1979.

Survivors: Son, Burnace J. Boles Jr. of Odessa; sister, Cleatis Dixon of Lindsay, Okla.; brother, Don Blair of Dumas; two grandchildren.

Faye Bruce

ODESSA -- Faye Josaphine Bruce, 93, of Odessa, a retired school teacher and homemaker, died Friday, May 15, 1998, at New Horizons Nursing Home.

Graveside services were held Tuesday, May 19, 1998, at Ector County cemetery. Arrangements by Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.

She was born in Palo Pinto County and moved to Odessa in the 1930s from Erath County. She was a member of the Church of Christ.

Survivors: Daughter, Avalon Bruce of Odessa; and one grandchild.

Kenneth McVea

BIG SPRING -- Kenneth O. McVea, 32, of Big Spring, a truck driver, died Friday, May 15, 1998, from injuries sustained in a truck accident.

Rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m. today at Myers & Smith Funeral Home Chapel. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Northside Baptist Church with the Rev. James Pollard officiating. Burial will be at Mount Olive Memorial Park. Arrangements by Myers & Smith Funeral Home.

He was born in Big Spring and was a lifetime resident.

Survivors: Wife, Isabel McVea of Big Spring; son, Issac Nieto of Big Spring; daughter, Kenniesha Nieto of Big Spring; mother, Linda Hill of Big Spring; brothers, Wayne McVea of Midland, Johnny McVea and Leonard Hill, both of Big Spring, Vincent McVea of Odessa; sisters, Ethel McVea and Linda Marshal, both of Big Spring; and grandmother, Elizabeth Perkins of Big Spring.
