Wilma Terry Finley

Kermit - Wilma Finley, 86, went to be with her Lord and “Big Daddy” on December 28, 2005. She was born in Lockhart, Texas, August 28, 1919, to L.C. and Dovie Electra Terry. She married the love of her life, George Finley, May 08, 1940. They were married for 58 years before he preceded her in death January 06, 1998.
Mrs. Finley is survived by one daughter; Mary Kay Cubine and two beautiful grandchildren whom “Angel” adored; George Claybourne Cubine and Quimby Michele Cubine. She is also survived by one brother; Ralph L. Terry of Bryan, Texas; one aunt, Josie Branyon of Snook, Texas; one brother-in-law, C.A. Sullivan of Lake Jackson, Texas; two sisters-in-law, Frances Roberts of San Antonio, Texas, and Betty Terry of Yuma, Arizona. She is also survived by 15 nieces and nephews and more than 50 great- and great-great-nieces and nephews, and many loyal friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers; Luke Terry and wife Mary, Willie Terry, and twin brother Wilson Terry; sisters; Mae Terry Slater and husband Edwin Slater, Mary Lee Terry Crowson and husband Clarence, Dorthy Sue Terry, and Lorraine Terry Sullivan; sister-in-law, Eugenia Terry; three brothers-in-law, Dr. Ross Finley, Barry Finley, and Ted Roberts; and niece Donna Gayle Sullivan.
George and Wilma were vital and active residents of Kermit for many years. Wilma was a charter member of Kermit’s St. Peter’s Episcopal Church where she served as its treasurer for over 20 years. In the early 50’s she helped George establish his law practice in Kermit and later stayed home to be a mother and homemaker. She enjoyed visiting friends, bowling, playing golf and bridge. Along with her “first” friend, Martha Jackson and friend Betty Bewley and others, they formed the infamous pickin’, grinnin’ and singin’ group.
Memorial Services will be held at 1:00 pm on December 31, 2005, at The First United Methodist Church in Kermit with Mother Leslie Gregory officiating.
Memorials may be sent to St. Peter’s Episcopal Church P.O. Box 702, Kermit, Texas 79745 or Home Hospice 516 N Texas Ave. Odessa, Texas 79761.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Family Services Funeral Parlor of Kermit, Texas.

Willie Faye Neely

Odessa - Willie Faye Neely, 74, of Odessa, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2005, at her residence.
She was born April 1, 1931 in Mills County, TX. To William & Martha Davidson She was a homemaker and loved to quilt, and sew. She loved animals. She loved life; even in difficult times she saw the positive.
She was preceded in death by her parents, son, John Z. Everhart, grandson, Jack Everhart, sister, Judy Schweizenberg & brother, E.B. Davidson.
She is survived by her husband, H. Ray Neely of Hobbs, N.M.; sons, Robert James Everhart of Dallas, William David Everhart & wife Rose of San Antonio, Victor Daniel Everhart & wife Connie of Odessa, Reid Harris & wife Monica & H. Rayford Neely all of Carlsbad, N.M.; daughters: Brenda L. Crowe & husband Pete of Crewe, VA, Martha Osuna of Miami, FL. & Patricia Kubitz & husband George of Atlanta, GA.; sister, Mary Smith & husband Gary of Waco, TX.; (22) grandchildren; (20) great-grandchildren; & cousin Theata Thomas of Claremore, OK.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 1, 2006 at Hubbard-Kelly Chapel. Interment will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 2, 2006 at the Indian Creek cemetery in Comanche County, TX.
Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.

Helen Lucille Watt

Odessa - Helen Lucille Watt age 86, of Odessa, passed away Friday, December 30, 2005 at Medical Center Hospital.
Visitation will be 6 to 7:30 pm Monday at Frank Wilson Funeral Directors.
Graveside services will be 10:00 am Tuesday at Sunset Memorial Gardens with Rev Paul Bauernfeind.
Helen was born May 4, 1919 in Meridian, Mississippi to Jeff and Alice (Moore) Casey.
She married LaFolia Watt on November 15, 1942 in Beaumont. She was a member of Asbury Methodist Church. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
Helen is survived by her husband LaFolia “Bud” Watt of Odessa; daughter Kathy Adams and husband Hugh of Odessa; sister Ruth Davis of Austin; granddaughter Laurie Speir and husband Michael of Mobile, AL; great granddaughters Amelia and Amanda Speir of Mobile, AL.
Services entrusted to Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors.

Esther Lee Berthot

Odessa - Esther Lee Berthot, 79, of Odessa, formerly of Chanute, KS, passed away Sunday, September 11, 2005 at Parks Methodist Retirement Village.
She was born October 21, 1925 in Big Creek, Kansas to Arthur and Gladys Whitworth Franklin. She was a homemaker and loving mother of seven children. She served as Brownie and Girl Scout Leader and Neighborhood Chairwoman of the Meadowlark Girl Scout Council for several years.
She is survived by her son, Clay Berthot of Locust, N.C., daughter, Lisa Swan & son-in-law Peter Haliotis of Phoenix, AZ., daughter Bridget Brush & husband Barry of Charlotte, N.C., daughter Mary Janae Berthot of Phoenix, AZ., daughter Polly McGuire & husband Kelly of Odessa, daughter Ellen Sandoval & husband Rueben of Cottonwood, AZ., grandchildren, Mary and James Poertner, Amanda Perez, Christos Haliotis, Chelsea Shugert, Kevin Pratt, Lindsay Brush, Mallory, Hillary and Molly McGuire, Madisen, Morgan, Carson, and Cortlin Sandoval, and 3 great-grandchildren, Rafael and Benecio Perez, and Isaiah Haliotis, her brother, Marion (Tobe) and Mary Betty Franklin of Zillah, WA., sister-in-law Alice Franklin of TN, and sister-in-law Myra Jean Franklin of KS; and many nieces and nephews.
Esther was preceded in death by her daughter, Christine Ann Poertner, two brothers, Gene Franklin and Glen Franklin and her parents.
A graveside service will be held in Chanute, KS, on September 25, 2005, 6:00 p.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic cemetery at 7th and Allen.
Memorials may be made to the St. Patrick’s School Bldg. Fund at 424 S. Central, Chanute, KS 66720, Meals on Wheels, or the the charity of your choice.

Loyce Marleen Griffin

Odessa - Loyce Marleen Griffin, 53, of Odessa, went to join her father in heaven on Sept. 14, 2005, after a courageous battle with brain cancer. She was at Hospice House of Odessa at the time of her death. Marleen was born in Beaumont, Texas, on July 14, 1952, to Marlin and Jane Sheffield. Her beloved father Marlin, who died in 1986, preceded her in death. She loved her family very much and she felt very fortunate to have been able to enjoy a lifelong close relationship with her wonderful mother Jane Sheffield.
Marleen moved with her family to Odessa in 1960 from Overton, Texas, at the age of 8. She attended Ireland, Ross and Burnet elementary schools, Bonham Junior High and Permian High School. She was a 1970 honors graduate of Permian High School. At Permian Marleen was a member of National Honor Society, Permian Choir and VOE. Marleen truly loved the MOJO tradition of Permian HS and she loved being a part of it, especially during the time that her husband was an assistant coach and her son was a player for the Panthers. She graduated from Odessa College with honors in 1972. At OC she was a member of the choir and BSU. Marleen graduated Cum Laude from Baylor University in 1974. She was a member of Chorale and Chi Social Club at Baylor. She began her career as an elementary school teacher in Eagle Pass, Texas, in 1974 and it was there that she met her husband, Coach Gary Griffin. They were married in Odessa on Aug. 7, 1976. Gary and Marleen have one son, JJ, the light of their life. Marleen faithfully followed her husband’s coaching career to three other states and 10 cities. She held out of state teaching positions in Albuquerque, N.M., Boone, N.C. and Valdosta, Ga., and she held Texas teaching positions in Midland, Ranger, Corsicana Mildred, Abilene and Odessa. She was a teacher at Noel Elementary in Odessa until she retired in 2005. She was also employed as a church secretary in North Carolina. Marleen was a member of TSTA, ATPE. AARP, Beta Sigma Phi, Ringers and Singers, Permian Basin Retired Teachers Association, American Football Coaches Wives Association, Texas High School Coaches Wives Association, Permian Football Booster Club Board of Directors, and she was an officer in Odessa Symphony Guild. She truly loved the Lord, was a faithful Christian and a loyal member of First United Methodist Church in Odessa where she was a member of FUMC Choir.
Marleen was a devoted wife, wonderful mother and loving daughter and sister. She loved music, football, stray dogs, mountains, flowers, and children. Marleen was a friend to all, especially to those less fortunate than her. She always made room for others in her home, where she housed and fed many walk-ins during her life as a coach’s wife. Marleen truly loved the children that she taught over the years and she dearly loved her family and friends, especially “The Mullets”, ‘The SIPS.” and her dog “Ser.”
The family would like to give special Thanks to ECISD, especially to Wendell Sollis, Gilbert and Adela Vasquez, Gary Gaines, Dr. Steve Brown, Ms. Andrea Martin and the staffs at Permian High School and Noel Elementary, Dr. Ralph Cockrell, Dr. Abdul Kadir, Dr. Weldon Butler, Dr. Morris Groves and the staff at UT M.D. Anderson in Houston, Nurses Nickie Howard, Debbie Harris, Joyce Thompson, Pathology Lab Nurses at MCH, Radiology Dept at West Texas Cancer Center and Home Hospice of Odessa. Special thanks are also due to all of the loyal and wonderful friends who were
a huge part of “Marleen’s Team” during her battle with cancer.
Loyce Marleen Griffin is survived by her immediate family who loved her very much including her devoted husband Gary and precious son James Joseph of the home, mother Jane Sheffield of Odessa, brother and wife Jim and Janet Sheffield of Lorena, Texas, sister and husband Mary and Jim Lewis of McKinney, Texas, mother-in-law Ida Mae Griffin of San Angelo, sister-in-law and husband Karia and Royce Smith of San Angelo, sister-in-law Jo Griffin of Brazelton, Ga., nieces Lauren Lewis, Lacey Lewis, Julie Sheffield, nephew Matt Sheffield, special friends Marilyn Jones, Cathie Miller, Betty Jo Madrid. Diana Haas, Theresa Badgett, Dawn Sickbert, Sandi McAdams, Rusty Inman, The Mullets and several other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Pallbearers will be Doyle Parker, Spike Dykes, Kirby Pugh, Jack Tayrien, Dick Winder, Joe Crousen, Gary Gaines, Kurt Nichols and Trapper O’Connell.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Joe Beene and Trey Howell and their families, Ronny Flowers, R.S. Higgins, Gerald Loyd, Tony Madrid, Michael Ashton, Jim Monk, Mike Podzemny, Chas Weatherby, Dr. Russell Dressen and T.J. Mills.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Joe Beene Trust Fund, Home Hospice of Odessa, Hurricane Katrina Disaster Relief Fund or to UT M.D. Andersen Cancer Center.
The funeral will be held at First United Methodist Church in Odessa at 2 p.m. Sunday. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Terry Tamplen and Rev. Donnie Williams of FUMC Odessa will officiate. The family will receive guests from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Frank Wilson Funeral Home.
The funeral is under the direction of Frank Wilson Funeral Home, 4635 Oakwood Drive, Odessa.

Jimmy Ray Shakespeare

Odessa - Jimmy Shakespeare, 61, passed away Monday, September 12, 2005 at Southwest Regional Medical Complex, in Lubbock, Texas. He was born January 5, 1944 in Levelland, Texas, to Hershall C. Shakespeare and Agnes Lee Passmore Shakespeare.
Jimmy is survived by his wife Sarah Shakespeare of Odessa, daughter Shannon Brewer of Odessa, his twin sister Barbara Autry of Levelland; sisters Sammy Baker and husband Donnye of Morton, TX, Bootsye Barnes and husband David of Levelland, Jean Wright and husband Ray of Odessa, brother H.L. Shakespeare and wife Mary of Levelland, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services are scheduled at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, September 15, 2005 at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home Chapel in Odessa, with Bob Baldree officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Services are entrusted to Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.

Nannie Lee Vaughn

Midland - On September 13, 2005, Heaven gained a new angel as Nannie Lee Vaughn passed away peacefully at the HospiceMidland Inpatient Unit at Midland Memorial Hospital. She was born August 22, 1916 in Cherokee County, Alabama where she lived with her five brothers and sisters.
At 17, while working as a glove maker in Rome, Georgia she met Pete Vaughn. They were married on September 30, 1933 in Lyerly, Georgia. She moved to Midland in 1946 with her husband and children and worked as a cashier in a photo booth. Anyone who met her knew that Nannie was one of the sweetest people God ever placed on this Earth. Every person that sat down at her table was welcomed and filled with both love and home cooking. She was a member of South Memorial Baptist Church where she kept the nursery for over 30 years. Her husband precedes her in death.
She is survived by three children, Mickey Gothard and her husband Jack, Ronnie Vaughn and his wife Donna, and Tebo Vaughn and his wife Sandra, all of Midland, one stepdaughter, Pauline Brooks of Florida, nine grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at Ellis Funeral Home, Thursday, September 15, 2005 between the hours of 6:00 P.M. and 8:00 P.M. Funeral services will not be held at this time. Arrangements are under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home, 801 Andrews Hwy. Midland, Texas (432) 683-5555.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to HospiceMidland, P.O. Box 2621, Midland, Texas 79702.

Andrew Terry Tackett

Odessa - Andrew Terry Tackett, 78, a retired Odessa High School teacher, died Monday Sept. 12, 2005, at Medical Center Hospital.
Andrew was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Betha Tackett; one brother, Bill Tackett Jr.
Another brother, Gerald Tackett of Houston survives, along with Elnita Tackett, Andrew’s wife of fifty years and daughters: Andrea Spartz, Vanessa Sanyang, Erica Khorsandi, Jennifer Tackett and Sabrina Addington; and son-in-laws, Warren Spartz, Manga Sanyang, Mohammad Khorsandi and Phillip Addington. His grandchildren are Carl and Kimberly Spartz, Jenaba, Nisa and Lamin Sanyang, Parisa and Sarah Khorsandi and Amy, Hannah Megan and Abigail Addington.
Andrew graduated from Texas Christian University and North Texas State University and taught science and electronics at Odessa High School and Odessa College from 1953 to 1990.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. today, Sept. 15, at St. Andrew Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Odessa with the Rev. Jimmy Braswell officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice House, 309 N. Sam Houston Ave., Odessa TX 79761.
The family would like to thank the Dr. Le and Dr. Amaram for their compassionate care for our wonderful loved one.
