Dorothy Kitchens Kirk
Midland - On Saturday, October 29, 2005, Jesus took our mother’s hand and led her from the shadows of evening into the dawn of eternal light. Graveside services under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home were held on Tuesday, November 1, 2005 at Resthaven Memorial Park in Midland and were officiated by Dr. John Petty of Kerrville and Deacon Mary Collier of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Midland.
Dorothy Kitchens Kirk was born March 30, 1915 on the family farm in Lawton, Oklahoma. Her parents were Elmer and Annabelle Kitchens who owned and operated restaurants in Lawton and Stillwater. She married
Jack Kirk in Stillwater on November 9, 1936. During their marriage, they moved extensively and lived in many different places as Mr. Kirk’s employment with Texaco took his family on the search for oil. From Calgary, Alberta, Canada through North and South Dakota to Illinois and Kansas and finally to Texas, they tallied almost 100 moves during their long marriage. They experienced the boom days of Snyder and Lamesa and the beginning exploration of Crockett County, but finally settled in Kermit as the base from which Mr. Kirk worked until his retirement in 1974. Dorothy returned to college at the age of 37 and received her B.S. in Elementary Education from North Texas University in 1954. With the exception of one year at Fannin Elementary School in Midland, she taught fourth grade in Kermit until her retirement in 1985.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Kirk; her parents, Elmer and Annabelle Kitchens and her siblings, Millie Kitchens Crabb and Walter Kitchens. She is survived by her children, Carol Kirk of Midland and Dana Kirk of Kerrville; her grandchildren, Kirk Whitehead of Denver Colorado; Kristin Kirk and Gareth Kirk of Houston. She is also survived by a sister, Mary Kitchens Wick of Surprise, Arizona and her nephew, Stephen Crabb of Dallas.
As we remember our mother, we count the blessings of her life. She was married
to Jack Kirk for 57 years and theirs was a marriage of love, loyalty and commitment. She was a teacher who loved every day she spent in the classroom and whose students, as adults, wrote letters of tribute and gratitude for the time they spent with her during their fourth grade year. She was the devoted mother of two children and the loving grandmother of three grandchildren who filled her later years with great joy. She was the friend of many who knew her to be a trusted confidante. She was able to laugh with others and at herself as she experienced the mirth of the moment. She was an avid reader who valued education and personal growth throughout her long life. Praise God from whom these blessings flow.
We say our earthly goodbye and await the day when we shall meet again, comforted by these words:
“Then, in thy mercy, grant us a safe lodging, and a holy rest and peace at the last.”
Donations in her memory may be made to Salvation Army: Shoes for Kids, 300 S Baird, Midland, TX 79701; the Library Fund of Fannin Elementary School, 2400 Fannin Ave., Midland, TX 79705; or the Purple Sage Elementary School Library, 601 S Poplar, Kermit TX 79745; or the charity of one’s choice.
