Bessie Margaret Herrington
Lake Charles, La. - Bessie Margaret Herrington, 94, died on Sunday October 23, 2005 at her home. Aunt Bessie was born on December 10, 1910 in Lake Charles, LA and moved to Gardendale, TX in 2001. She was baptized on October 16, 2005 by the Rev. Donald Loudenback of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Odessa, TX. She was an avid gardener and gifted painter. Aunt Bessie is preceded in death by her parents Joe and Margaret Herrington, and two brothers; Riley A. Herrington and Joseph A. Herrington.
She is survived by five nephews; Joe Herrington of Canyon County, CA; Mike Herrington of Kwajalein, MI; Lance Herrington of Odessa, TX; Kim Herrington of George West, TX; and Tim Herrington of Gardendale, TX; five great nephews, two great nieces, and two great- great nephews. It is with Christian Joy that her family and friends now celebrate her life with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Funeral services will be 10:00 am Wednesday at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church with Rev. Donald Loudenback officiating. Burial will be in Graceland cemetery in Lake Charles, LA.

Dr. Frances A. Johnson (Pevey)
Monahans - Dr. Frances A. Johnson (Pevey), 65, of Monahans passed away Wednesday, October 19, 2005. A memorial service was held on Saturday, October 22, 2005 in Monahans.
Frances was born on April 5, 1940, in Beaumont, Texas, to Henry and Sarah (Long) Johnson. She was preceded in death by her parents. She graduated from Okmulgee High School in 1959 and was elected Homecoming Queen in her senior year. After high school, she earned her Bachelor’s degrees at East Central State University. In college, she was a member of Chi Omega. Later, she earned her Master’s Degree at Georgia State University and earned her Ph.D. at Texas A & M. Her teaching career included three years at UTPB. She and her friend Jackie Zweiger wrote and illustrated the Coyote Tales.
A pet lover, she is survived by her beloved dogs, Zorro and Bidi. In addition she is survived by her brothers, Wayne Johnson and wife Lee Ann of Odessa, and James R. Johnson and wife Carol of LaGrange, nephew Todd Johnson and wife Roxanne of LaGrange, nieces, Brittani Johnson Roberts and husband Doug of Dripping Springs; Courtney Johnson of Nashville, Tennessee; and Sarah Johnson Viscardi and husband Mike of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She is also survived by great nephews Tyler, Mason, and Isaac; many cousins, and dear friends, Maxine Gentle, Gail Wolf, and Cindy Fulfer.

Elena May Korthals
Odessa - Elena May Korthals lovingly known as Deanie by her friends, and Silly Granny by her Grandchildren was called home on October 21, 2005 at the age of 76. Deanie was born on May 30, 1929 in Kimberly, Idaho. She was married
to Melvin G. Korthals who preceded in her in death along with her mother Alice May McClure, father Arthur James Fry, and her brother Rodney Fry.
She leaves behind her daughters Carol Savoie, Vickie Korthals, and Terry Hamilton. Her Grandchildren are Michael Shane Savoie, Jeremy Scott Herron, Steven James Herron, Melvin Charles Herron, Heather Lee Hamilton, and Tiffany Brooke Bristol. Silly Granny also had 13 Great Grandchildren.
Elena was a nurse for 32 years. She loved her chosen profession and the many people that she cared for. She opened her heart up for anyone that needed her and always put others before herself.
The Grandchildren have wonderful memories of playing games of Monopoly late into the night and waking up to a breakfast of homemade waffles and a smile. She is now at rest with her Lord and very much at peace; she will be missed until we all meet again. Services are scheduled for 10 Am Tuesday October 25, 2005 at Temple Baptist Church with Reverend Owen Sharp officiating. Interment will follow at RoseHill cemetery.

Marjorie Elizabeth Wright
Odessa - Marjorie Elizabeth Wright, age 49, of Odessa, passed away, Saturday, October 22, 2005 at University Medical Center in Lubbock. She was born September 17, 1956 in Troy, Pennsylvania to her parents, Mark and Anna Lee Tillotson Wright.
She was a communication specialist for Department of Public Service.
She is survived by her parents, Mark and Anna Lee Wright of Waverly, New York, her step sons, Barton Vann of Oklahoma, Donny Welborn of Odessa, and Steven Welborn of Colorado, her brothers, Stephen Wright & wife Gina of Waverly, NY, Jeff Wright & wife Penny of Waverly, NY, Nick Wright and wife, Stacey of Grand Falls, N. Dakota, & Joe Wright & wife, Holley of Waverly, NY, her sisters, Regina Moon & husband, Terry of Odessa, Paula Tompkins of Waverly, NY and Beth Wright of Waverly, NY and 1 grandchild, Ashton Hill. She is also survived by her deceased husband’s family as well as several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Eddy Vann and sister, Melany Horvat.
Family visitation will be 6 - 8 PM Tuesday, October 25, 2005, at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
Memorial services will be at 4 PM Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2005 at Immanuel Baptist Church.

Frank L. Griffin
Odessa - Frankie L. Griffin, 62, of Odessa, a Field Construction Supervisor, died Monday, Dec. 12, 2005 at Medical Center in Odessa after a short illness. He was born February 20, 1943 to Arlie and Linnia Griffin. He was preceded in death by his Mother and Sister Arlena Griffin.
Frank is survived by his wife Deanna Griffin of Odessa; Sons Richard and Michael Griffin of Odessa, Daughter Michelle Parker of Lafayette, LA; Father Arlie Griffin of Coalgate OK, Sister Frances Gawf of Tulsa OK; eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Born in Coalgate, OK he spent more of his life in Odessa, TX; he lived a full and happy life filled with many fond memories. Frank spent most of his career in the Oil and Gas Industry. He loved to hunt, fish and Bar-B-Q cookouts. His best memories were those of fishing or hunting trips. He will be greatly missed by family and friends.
Visitation will begin on Tuesday 8:00 to 5:00 p.m. Services will be on Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. at Frank W. Wilson Funeral Home.
Patricia Sue Bangert Phillips
Odessa - Patricia Sue Bangert Phillips (known as Granny Sue to her grand children) was born in Corpus Christi, Texas October 27th, 1941. She went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, December 11, 2005.
Mrs. Phillips was preceded in death by her parents, Elonzo Samuel and Maggie Zaylee Latham and two brothers Russell and Jim Latham.
Sue is survived by her husband, Leon Phillips, children, Cindy Pierce and husband Richard of Odessa, Cheryl Davis and husband Terry of Abilene, Kenny Bangert and wife Theresa of California, Ron Phillips and wife Andrea of Big Spring and Pattie Phillips of Midland, thirteen grandchildren, one great-grandchild and many nieces and nephews.
The family will have a visitation on Tuesday evening from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.
Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Wednesday, December 14th, 2005 in the Chapel at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home with Ivy Shelton officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Frances Wittie
Edgewood - Services for Frances Wittie, 76, of Edgewood, are scheduled for 10:00 AM, Wednesday, December 14, 2005, at Cheatham Memorial United Methodist Church in Edgewood with Rev. Jesse Brannen officiating. Services are under direction of Hiett’s LyBrand Funeral Home in Edgewood. Burial will follow at Restland cemetery in Gatesville, TX. Frances passed away December 10, 2005, in Tyler.
Frances Merlene Steinman was born April 21, 1929, in Priddy, TX, to the late William Louis and Wilhelmine Becker Steinman. She was raised in Priddy, TX, where she attended public school and graduated from Priddy High School. She married
James Dutton and he preceded her in death in 1948. Frances later married
Joe Cloys Wittie in Odessa, TX, on November 5, 1950, and they lived in Plainview and Odessa before moving to Edgewood in 1995. Joe preceded her in death in 1996. She was a homemaker and a member of Cheatham Memorial United Methodist Church in Edgewood, TX. Her hobbies included quilting, sewing and working crossword puzzles.
Frances is survived by her son, Sherman Vance Wittie and wife, Kellianne of Edgewood, TX; daughter, Shanna Vanette Carpenter and husband, Rick of Oceanside, CA; brothers, Ben Steinman and wife, Joyce of Clovis, NM; sisters, Mary Seider and husband, Otto, Dora Lippe and husband, John, and Rosie Hull and husband, Charles, all of Marble Falls, TX, Dorothy (Dot) Caudle of Texarkana, TX, Opal Schwartz of Temple, TX, and Marie Gummelt and husband, Earl of Odessa, TX; grandchildren, Megan Revell, Morgan Carpenter, Brooke Carpenter, and Corey Carpenter; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Family visitation will be held 6:00 – 8:00 PM Tuesday evening.
Edy G. Whitmore, Sr.
Llano River - Edy George Whitmore (known as Big Ed to his grandchildren) was born in Crane, Texas September 23, 1935 to Ed and Maggie Lu Whitmore. He went home to be with the Lord December 2, 2005 in Junction, Texas. At the time of his death, Edy was doing what he loved-living on the Llano River, hunting deer.
Edy played football for the Odessa High Broncos and graduated from OHS in 1954. He received a 4-year football scholarship to Texas Western College in El Paso. He married
Sandra Wright in December 1954. They had three children, Wendy, Edy Jr. and Sally. Edy worked for BJ Hughes Oilfield Services for over 40 years. He married
Sherry Gordon in 1972. Sherry had a daughter, Johnna, whom he helped raise and together they had a son Jason.
Upon his retirement from BJ, Edy moved to San Antonio where he worked for Cody Co., retiring in September 2005. He then was able to fulfill his dream of building a cabin on the Llano River with his cousin Phil Hughes. He loved the outdoors and he loved watching the Dallas Cowboys.
Edy was preceded in death by his parents, Ed & Maggie Lu Whitmore, a sister, Fran Duggan and his two sons, Edy Jr. & Jason. Left to cherish his memory are daughters Wendy McSperitt of Thomas, Oklahoma and Sally Poteet & husband John of Stanton, Texas; stepdaughter Johnna Bitting & husband Gary of Arkansas; brother Joe Whitmore & wife Cecilia of Houston; sister Candy McDougall & husband Mac of Odessa; aunt Mildred Whitmore of Arlington; five grandchildren five great-grandchildren; several nieces & nephews and may cousins. A private service was held on the Llano River. Arrangements were under the direction of Graham Funeral Home of Junction.

Pastor Jack A. Oden
ODESSA - Pastor Jack A. Oden, 75, of Odessa, passed away Thursday, December 8, 2005, at Medical Center Hospital.
He was born July 10, 1930, in Nolan County, Texas, to Austin Oden and Martha Moore. He was a Protestant Minister. He was united in marrige July 25, 1980 to Jean Stewart in Odessa.
He was preceded in death by his brothers; Sam and David Oden.
Jack is survived by his wife Jean Oden of Odessa, Sons: Max A. Oden of Tonopah Arizona and Ron Potts of Odessa. Daughters Susan Ransburger of Lynndale, Tx., Brenda Bodine of Kilgore, Tx., Teresa Purdom of California, Cynthia Hibdom of Washington, Christi Fraley of Sweetwater, Tx., and Tamara Hawkins of Odessa. Brothers Marion Oden and wife Doris of Paul’s Valley, OK., Aeron Oden and wife Gladys of Dublin, Tx. Norman Oden and wife Effie of Suprise, AZ, Walter Oden and Glenda of Lubbock, sisters; Sylvia Glasgow, Wanda Fraley both of Sweetwater, Jo and husband Bear Williams of Snyder, Maritha Bohall and husband Gerald of Sweetwater, two sister in law; Amber Oden of Westbrook, Glenda Oden of Pocola, OK. 7 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, 19 step grandchildren, 2 step great grandchildren.
Visitation will begin on Saturday noon at Odessa Funeral Home. Funeral services have been set for 11:00 AM on Monday December 12, 2005 at Full Gospel Covenant Church located at 7500 W 10th Odessa. Graveside will follow at 4:00 PM at the Garden of Memories in Sweetwater, Texas.

W.J. ‘Jay’ Poynor, Sr.
AUSTIN - Jay Poynor, 79, passed away December 7, 2005 following an auto accident. Jay was born in Brady, Texas on August 18, 1926. He graduated from Texas A&M in 1947 and moved to Odessa where he raised five children and was an active civic leader.
While living in Odessa, Jay took an active role in his church, business community and children’s lives. He served on the Odessa Chamber of Commerce, Jaycees, Chuck Wagon Gang, Shrine Club, Scottish Rite Association, Masonic Lodge, Rotary Club, Jesters, Ector County Children’s Services Board, OALU, TALU, and NALU. Jay served on the Board of Directors of the Texas A&M Former Students Association, Board of Directors of Ector County Hospital, Council of the Lutheran Church of the Risen Lord, and as a Session Member of the First Presbyterian Church of Odessa. Jay dedicated his life, both personally and professionally, to helping others. In 2000, he moved to Austin where he served as a Deacon at the First Presbyterian Church and continued his mission of helping others through various organizations. He has undoubtedly touched the lives of more people than any of us will ever know.
Jay is survived by his wife - Daffy Poynor; mother - Lorena Poynor; brother - Jamie Poynor; children - Molly Monroe and husband Mike of La Porte, Dusty Poynor of Garland, Steve Poynor of Odessa, Mike Poynor and wife Shirley of Austin, and Becky Lambeth and husband Eric of Austin; thirteen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren all of whom will miss him very much.
Visitation will be 12-8 p.m. Wednesday, December 14, at Wilke-Clay-Fish Funeral Home located at 2620 South Congress Avenue in Austin. Services will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Austin at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 15. If desired, donations in Jay’s honor may be made to Meals-on-Wheels, Salvation Army or the Texas A&M Former Students Association.
