Loyce Marleen Griffin

Odessa - Loyce Marleen Griffin, 53, of Odessa, went to join her father in heaven on Sept. 14, 2005, after a courageous battle with brain cancer. She was at Hospice House of Odessa at the time of her death. Marleen was born in Beaumont, Texas, on July 14, 1952, to Marlin and Jane Sheffield. Her beloved father Marlin, who died in 1986, preceded her in death. She loved her family very much and she felt very fortunate to have been able to enjoy a lifelong close relationship with her wonderful mother Jane Sheffield.
Marleen moved with her family to Odessa in 1960 from Overton, Texas, at the age of 8. She attended Ireland, Ross and Burnet elementary schools, Bonham Junior High and Permian High School. She was a 1970 honors graduate of Permian High School. At Permian Marleen was a member of National Honor Society, Permian Choir and VOE. Marleen truly loved the MOJO tradition of Permian HS and she loved being a part of it, especially during the time that her husband was an assistant coach and her son was a player for the Panthers. She graduated from Odessa College with honors in 1972. At OC she was a member of the choir and BSU. Marleen graduated Cum Laude from Baylor University in 1974. She was a member of Chorale and Chi Social Club at Baylor. She began her career as an elementary school teacher in Eagle Pass, Texas, in 1974 and it was there that she met her husband, Coach Gary Griffin. They were married in Odessa on Aug. 7, 1976. Gary and Marleen have one son, JJ, the light of their life. Marleen faithfully followed her husband’s coaching career to three other states and 10 cities. She held out of state teaching positions in Albuquerque, N.M., Boone, N.C. and Valdosta, Ga., and she held Texas teaching positions in Midland, Ranger, Corsicana Mildred, Abilene and Odessa. She was a teacher at Noel Elementary in Odessa until she retired in 2005. She was also employed as a church secretary in North Carolina. Marleen was a member of TSTA, ATPE. AARP, Beta Sigma Phi, Ringers and Singers, Permian Basin Retired Teachers Association, American Football Coaches Wives Association, Texas High School Coaches Wives Association, Permian Football Booster Club Board of Directors, and she was an officer in Odessa Symphony Guild. She truly loved the Lord, was a faithful Christian and a loyal member of First United Methodist Church in Odessa where she was a member of FUMC Choir.
Marleen was a devoted wife, wonderful mother and loving daughter and sister. She loved music, football, stray dogs, mountains, flowers, and children. Marleen was a friend to all, especially to those less fortunate than her. She always made room for others in her home, where she housed and fed many walk-ins during her life as a coach’s wife. Marleen truly loved the children that she taught over the years and she dearly loved her family and friends, especially “The Mullets,” ‘The SIPS” and her dog “Ser.”
The family would like to give special Thanks to ECISD, especially to Wendell Sollis, Gilbert and Adela Vasquez, Gary Gaines, Dr. Steve Brown, Ms. Andrea Martin and the staffs at Permian High School and Noel Elementary, Dr. Ralph Cockrell, Dr. Abdul Kadir, Dr. Weldon Butler, Dr. Morris Groves and the staff at UT M.D. Anderson in Houston, Nurses Nickie Howard, Debbie Harris, Joyce Thompson, Pathology Lab Nurses at MCH, Radiology Dept at West Texas Cancer Center and Home Hospice of Odessa. Special thanks are also due to all of the loyal and wonderful friends who were a huge part of “Marleen’s Team” during her battle with cancer.
Loyce Marleen Griffin is survived by her immediate family who loved her very much including her devoted husband Gary and precious son James Joseph of the home, mother Jane Sheffield of Odessa, brother and wife Jim and Janet Sheffield of Lorena, Texas, sister and husband Mary and Jim Lewis of McKinney, Texas, mother-in-law Ida Mae Griffin of San Angelo, sister-in-law and husband Karia and Royce Smith of San Angelo, sister-in-law Jo Griffin of Brazelton, Ga., nieces Lauren Lewis, Lacey Lewis, Julie Sheffield, nephew Matt Sheffield, special friends Marilyn Jones, Cathie Miller, Betty Jo Madrid. Diana Haas, Theresa Badgett, Dawn Sickbert, Sandi McAdams, Rusty Inman, The Mullets and several other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Pallbearers will be Doyle Parker, Spike Dykes, Kirby Pugh, Jack Tayrien, Dick Winder, Joe Crousen, Gary Gaines, Kurt Nichols and Trapper O’Connell.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Joe Beene and Trey Howell and their families, Ronny Flowers, R.S. Higgins, Gerald Loyd, Tony Madrid, Michael Ashton, Jim Monk, Mike Podzemny, T.J. Mills, Chas Weatherby and Dr. Russell Dressen.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Joe Beene Trust Fund, Home Hospice of Odessa, Hurricane Katrina Disaster Relief Fund or to UT M.D. Andersen Cancer Center.
The funeral will be held at First United Methodist Church in Odessa at 2 p.m. Sunday. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Terry Tamplen and Rev. Donnie Williams of FUMC Odessa will officiate. The family will receive guests from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Frank Wilson Funeral Home.
The funeral is under the direction of Frank Wilson Funeral Home, 4635 Oakwood Drive, Odessa.

Leora Elizabeth Jones Leslie

Odessa - Our loving mother passed away peacefully at the Hospice Home in Odessa on September 11, 2005.
She was born in Van Alystyne, TX on January 17, 1924. She graduated from McCamey High School in 1941, where she was a music lover, playing, the sax and piano. After graduation, she attended beauty school in Lubbock, after which she moved to Dallas and worked at Highland Park. After a year of bright lights of Dallas, she returned to Crane to work as a beautician. She married John L.Stokes in 1943. Out of that union, 3 daughters were born. She continued her work as a beautician for the remainder of her life. She was very active in sewing clubs. She won several awards, including the Bernina Award held in Switzerland. As well as numerous blue ribbons and best of show award from the Permian Basin Fair and Expo. She often designed her own clothes and made her own patterns for herself and her family. She made everything from prom dresses to swimming suits to tuxedos. She was approached by McCall’s Patterns to design patterns. She was an outstanding cook as well as an avid recipe collector. There was always an extra plate set on the table for anyone wanting a home cooked meal. In 1985 she was honored with a volunteer of the year award for donating her time to Deerings Nursing Home. She loved doing every ones hair and teaching arts and crafts. She was a member of the First Christian Church Disciples of Christ. Here too, she was very active in volunteer work. Her last major project was working on a labyrinth for the youth group at the church.
She is survived by 3 loving daughters Kay Howard of Crane, Delores “Shorty” Stokes and Pam Rogers of Odessa; three grandchildren, Kristi Woodward of Crane, Don Woodward and fiancé Michelle Ivie of Midland, and Tony McDow of Austin; three great grandchildren Zac Woodward, Megan and Max Ivie of Midland. Co-worker and long time friend Betty Woodard; step sister, Billie and Marc Green; extended family Judy Duckworth, Sharon Wilson, Rhonda Krough, Shelly Todd and Paula Brazeal as well as numerous friends and family.
She is preceded in death by her parents Claude H. Jones and Lillian M. (Jones) Holmes and brother William L. “Toots” Jones.
A memorial service were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, September 20th, at the First Christian Church Disciples of Christ. 601 N. Lee.

Fred Herndon Matthews

ODESSA - Fred Herndon Matthews, age 74, passed away Saturday, September 17, 2005, at the Hospice of Midland Inpatient Unit in Midland, TX.
He was born January 6, 1931, to James R. and Ona Matthews in Cotton Center, TX, and married Marjorie Ann Ator on July 6, 1948, in Lubbock, TX. Fred was a member of Odessa’s Second Baptist Church and loved singing in the choir. He was a salesman and Vice President of Shield, Inc., until his retirement.
He loved fishing, barbecuing, wood working and playing with his children and grandchildren. He also loved Little League baseball, Mojo football and the Dallas Cowboys (if they were winning).
Fred was a wonderful husband, daddy and granddaddy, and he will be terribly missed.
He is preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Robert, Howell, Ralph and J.R. Matthews, and a daughter Terry Lynn Matthews.
Survivors include his wife, Marjorie Ann Matthews of Odessa; sons, Michael Fred Matthews and wife, Sheri of San Angelo, TX; and Stephen Bryan Matthews of Odessa; daughters, Nancy Ann Kirk and husband, Bill of Midland, TX; Sherry Nann Maxwell of Frisco, TX; and Carol Denise O’Dell and husband, Blake of Brady, TX; sisters, Ruby Chamberlain and husband, Jack of Pueblo, CO; Mary Courter of Ft Worth, TX; and Sherry Thomas and husband, Harold of Del City, OK; eight grandchildren, James Myrick, Jeffery Maxwell, Marjorie Maxwell, Brandi Matthews, Ryan Matthews, Bonnie Kirk, Joshua O’Dell, and Jacob O’Dell; and five great-grandchildren.
There will be a family visitation from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Sunday, September 18, 2005, at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, September 19, 2005, at Second Baptist Church with Randy Duckett officiating and Blake O’Dell assisting. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
The family suggests donations be made to the Hospice of Midland Inpatient Unit at Midland Memorial Hospital or Second Baptist Church of Odessa.
Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.

Iva McGee

ANDREWS - Iva McGee, 73, of Andrews passed away Thursday, September 15, 2005 at Home Hospice House in Odessa.
Funeral Services will be 2:00 PM Sunday at McNett Funeral Home Chapel in Andrews. Rev. James Linton will officiate. Burial will be in Andrews North cemetery under the direction of McNett Funeral Home.
Iva was born January 1, 1932 in Post, Texas. She married Garland Aubrey November 1, 1947 in Post and they moved to Andrews in 1969 from Post. He preceded her in death in 2002.
She was a Homemaker and member of the United Pentecostal Church in Andrews.
She enjoyed, Sewing and working in her garden and she loved to cook. She was active in her church and loved to share the Bible with her children and grandchildren. She liked to dance and sing in her younger years and taught all of her kids how to dance the “Two Step” on the kitchen floor.
Survivors include: One Son - Doug Awbrey of Andrews; Three Daughters - Joy Lynn Wren, Brenda Kay Holly and Teresa Ann Smith all of Andrews; 9 Grandchildren and 14 Great-Grandchildren.

Alice Manning Roberts

Port Allegany, Penn. - Alice Manning Roberts was born April 19, 1919, in Olean, N.Y., to Lou and Raymond Sullivan and died Sept. 12, 2005, at her home in Odessa, TX, at the age of 86 years. Following the deaths of her parents, she lived in Port Allegany with Ethel and Charles Huff, her maternal aunt.
She attended schools in Olean and Port Allegany and graduated from the Olean Business Institute. She married George Manning in November of 1939 and he preceded her in death in 1964. In 1979, she married Robert (Bob) Roberts, who also preceded her in death in 2000.
In 1982, she retired from customer service with, what was then North Penn Gas, and bought a home in Ellenton, FL, where she lived until May of 2004 when she moved to Texas. After retirement, she especially enjoyed working in her yard, arts and crafts, oil painting and her many friends and neighbors.
She is survived by his daughters, Judith Manning Kenney of Odessa, TX, and Linda Manning Szymoniak of Pittsburgh, PA; son-in-law, Frederick Briggs of Camp Hill, PA; brother, J. Robert Sullivan of Norfolk, CT; 10 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren; in addition to her exceptional caregiver, Susie Landeros of Odessa.
She is preceded in death by her husbands; daughter, Nancy Manning Briggs; son, Charles T. Manning; brothers, Raymond and Donald Sullivan; and great-grandson, Maxwell Falatovich.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30, 2005, in Port Allegany, PA under the direction of Schweitzer Funeral Home and Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.

Charles (Charlie) E. Smith

ODESSA - Charles (Charlie) E. Smith of Odessa, went to join his father in heaven on September 16, 2005. He was at home at the time of his death. Charles was born in Atoka County OK on august 10, 1938, to Irene and Hubert Smith.
He is preceded in death by, father Hubert Smith, brothers Lynn Smith, Larry Smith, and Sam Smith.
His family moved to Texas when he was a teenager. He started work in the oil field when he was 16. His Dad and Mon taught him that a person should always stay honest and work hard. We believe that Charlie did this. He retired from the oil field in August 2000 where he had many friends. Some would say that he always had an opinion on politics. He always said if you treat people like you would want to be treated you would be blessed. He served in the Army and received an honorable discharge. He was a member of the American Legion in Odessa.
He enjoyed team penning with friends. He enjoyed working with leather whether it was to repair a saddle or making belts.
His family and friends meant a great deal to him. His children and grandchildren were the love of his life.
He is survived by his wife Louise of 45 years, son Rod Smith, grandsons Deven, and Dexter Smith, granddaughter Bri Smith. Daughter Regena Young, son-in-law Steve Young, grandson Michael Young all of Odessa. He is also survived by his mother, Irene Cook, of Odessa; brother Bobby Smith and wife Rachel of Monahans, sister Vikki Miller and husband Charley of Denver City, and sisters-in-law Karen Smith of Whitehouse, Elizabeth Sensadough and husband Dwight, brothers-in-law Bill Baldree and wife Debbie, Gerald Baldree and wife June. Charlie is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend our appreciation to all the staff at Home Hospice of Odessa for all their loving care and support, and to the Chapel Hill Baptist Church for all their prayers and support.
Memorial services will be Wednesday, September 21, 2005 10:30 a.m. Chapel Hill Baptist Church with minister Jeff Box officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Home Hospice, 516 N. Texas, Odessa, TX 79761.
Services are entrusted to Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.

Jose L. Brito

Odessa - Jose L. Brito, 92, of Odessa passed away Sunday, September 18, 2005 at the Mabee Health Care Center in Midland. He was born July 20, 1913 in Presidio to Anastacio & Sixta Brito. He was a retired Rancher and a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.
He is survived by his wife Marcelina Brito of Odessa, sons, Edmundo H. Brito of Lindsay, CA., Alonzo H. Brito, Felipe H. Brito, Omar H. Brito all of Odessa & Jose H. Brito Chihuahua, Mexico, daughters, Bertha Lydia Medina of Odessa, Celia B. Acosta of Monahans, brothers, Amando Brito of Ojinaga, Mexico & Daniel Brito of Artesia, NM. sisters, Angela Hernandez & Maria Paz Garay both of Artesia, NM, Lucema Brito & Margarita Sanchez both of Ojinaga, Magdalena Sanchez of Presidio, & Conception Hernandez of Oklahoma, (22) grandchildren & (19) great-grandchildren.
A Rosary will be said 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2005 at Hubbard-Kelly Chapel, Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, Sept 21, 2005 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with Father Mark Miller officiating. Interment will follow at Rosehill cemetery. Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral.

Oscar Urias (Papi) Venegas

Odessa - Oscar Urias (Papi) Venegas The light in many peoples lives, who would stop at nothing to show someone his warm, caring and loving self. He is an inspiration to many and was loved by all. The kind of person you remember as full of life. His world was all about his family and enjoying every minute with the people he loved. In his mind there was no wrong in anyone and was always thinking of ways to help others. Now in his time to leave us and go to a better place, he will be missed and forever loved by all his family and friends. Until we unite and meet again we’ll always keep you in our hearts and prayer.
Funeral mass will be 10: 00 am Tuesday at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church with Father Frank Chavez officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
He is preceded in death by his parents two sisters and a brother.
He is survived by his wife Olga Venegas of Odessa, son Omar Venegas of Odessa, daughter Odelia Venegas of Odessa, brothers Primotivo Venegas of Ojinaga, Mexico, Hector Venegas of McCamey, Ramon Venegas Jr of McCamey, sister Delores Martinez, of San Angelo and grandchild Adric Gonzalez of Odessa.
