Lt. Colonel Max J. Wilson (ret.)
Odessa - Max J. Wilson died peacefully at his home in Odessa, Texas on Monday, January 16, 2006. He was surrounded by his family and beloved pets. He was 80 years old.
He was born September 23, 1925 in Oilton, Oklahoma to Sadie Elizabeth Rowden and Frank Fletcher Wilson. He grew up in the oilfields of Oklahoma and traveled with his family to San Francisco in 1941 and went to work in the shipyards. He joined the Marines in 1943. His military career began as a Marine rifleman on the black sand beaches of Iwo Jima. He was honorably discharged from the Marines in 1946 and enlisted in the Army 1951. He spent the last 18 months of the Korea War on the front lines as a tank commander including the battles on the frozen ground of Pork Chop Hill. He received a presidential battlefield commission while in Korea. Max was a combat veteran of Vietnam and later served as Army liaison to the Air Force during the Vietnam War. His military uniform could not accommodate his numerous decorations including the Legion of Merit and Soldier’s Medal, but what he was most proud of being a commanding officer and leading dedicated young men in service to their country.
He married
Dora Majory Braswell on February 19, 1947 in San Francisco. They were married
for 57 years. They traveled extensively including two tours of Europe during his military career. He retired from the military in 1968 and began the first JROTC program in Odessa at Ector High School continuing to Odessa High School until 1974. He worked as security and attendance officer for ECISD until 1986. He was very proud of his young cadets and honored to work with the schools’ faculties and especially the JROTC NCO’s.
He was preceded in death by his “bride” Dora, his son, Madison, and sister Iona McAtee.
He is survived by three children: son Max Wilson and wife Veta of Tulsa, OK and daughter Mia Gibson and husband Daniel of Odessa and daughter-in- law Marie-Anne Wilson of Alabama. He is also survived by sister Frankie Deffenbaugh, Norma Coker, brother David Wilson, all California and his dearest cousin Jack Crain of Oklahoma. He has eight grandchildren: Max Jay Wilson, Mitchell Wilson, Sean Wilson, Sian Wilson, Seth Wilson, Christine Gilbert, Marjory Gibson and Madison Gibson. He has seven great grandchildren. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins who will miss getting their ears lovingly pinched by Uncle Max.
Although he was eligible for burial with full military honors at Arlington National cemetery, he requested to be buried at the family ranch in Oklahoma, his favorite place.
There will be no services held locally.
The family wishes to express deep appreciation to Debbie Harris with Home Hospice and to Caring Seniors Services, especially Barbara and Dawna for their compassionate care during his last daus. Memorial may be made to the Door of Hope Mission in Odessa.

Anastasia (Ann) Johnson
Calverton, N.Y - Anastasia Johnson, 83, passed away Saturday, Jan. 21, 2006 at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa, Texas.
Anastasia was born in Brooklyn, New York on December 7, 1922. She was raised in New York City and moved to Bellmore, New York where she lived most of her life. She moved to Odessa with her husband in December, 1988.
Mrs. Johnson served in the Navy during World War II as a wack.
She was preceded in death by her husband Francis Johnson on October 9, 2004.
Anastacia leaves behind three sons, Kenneth Johnson and wife Nancy of Ocala, Florida, Barrie Johnson and wife Joél, of Rockville Center, New York, and James Johnson of Odessa, Texas. Also surviving are 2 wonderful grandchildren, Kenneth and Brian of Ocala, Florida.
Services are entrusted to Bartholomew Funeral Home of Belmore, N.Y., with burial in Calverton, New York.

Betty Jo Wheaton
Odessa - Betty Jo Wheaton, 74, of Odessa, Texas formerly of Erie, PA, and Norman, OK., passed away Sunday, January 15, 2006 at her residence. She was born in Woodsboro, TX.
She retired from Erie County Crippled Childrens’ Center (now the Achievement Center) in Erie, PA. She was very active with GEER, and as a former board member of the Oasis Group in Norman, OK. and while in Oklahoma remained active in the Newcombers Group. She was an avid walker and loved to play bridge.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Viola Miller McMahon, her husband, Virgil Wheaton, and her son, Darrel Wheaton.
She is survived by her daughter, Sheryl Kabasinski & husband, Len of Erie, PA., a sister, Deanna McMahon of Midland, TX. She left behind two grandchildren: Hope Sowden & husband, James of Phoenix, AZ., Jolene Rorer of Erie, PA., and great-grandchildren: Kelsea, Baylon, Kaitlynn & Alayna. She also left behind many dear friends.
A Memorial service was held Saturday, January 21, 2006 at the First Baptist Church in Odessa, Texas.
Memorials may be made to the Womens Care Center of Erie County, PA.

Alice Gann Weaver
Kermit - Alice Gann Weaver, age 92 of Austin, formerly of Kermit, Texas, passed away on January 20, 2006.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 33 years, S. A. Weaver, and her son, Pat Haygood.
Alice was a loving mother and grandmother and will be greatly missed by her family which includes her daughter, Imogene Kitchens and son-in-law, Aubrey of Austin; grandsons, Pete Kitchens of Montana, Rex Kitchens of Leander, Sam Haygood of North Carolina, Joe Haygood, Dan Haygood and daughter-in-law, Dorothy Haygood, all of Andrews; brother, Bobby Gann of Midland; twelve great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, January 25, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. at Kermit cemetery, Kermit, Texas.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Austin’s Christopher House.

Joyce Lepard
Odessa - Joyce Lepard, born August 22, 1935 in Kaufman, Texas, the youngest of seven children passed away at Medical Center Hosptial on January 23, 2006 at the age of 70 years.She was preceded in death by her husband and best friend Jackie Lepard, parents; John G and Sarah A Dodd, son; Vance G.(Greg) Cline, daughter; Durinda Cosper, four sisters and one brother. Joyce is survived by one son; Mike Lepard of Odessa, four gandchildren, Kimberley Cline of Missouri, Chelsea Alvarado of Odessa, Jimmy Cosper of Dallas and J.J. Lepard of Odessa, Special sister and brothers in law; Mary and L.D. Cunningham of Big Spring and Jim Cosper of Dallas, several nieces and nephews, and our very own loving nurse Shannon. Visitation will be at Odessa Funeral Home on Wednesday from 8Am until 5 Pm. Graveside services are set for Thursday at 10:00 AM at Sunset Memorial Gardens with the Reverend Owen Sharp officiating.

Odessa - Viola Magdalene (Biddy) Browning, 92, of Odessa passed away Wednesday, January 18, 2006 at the Hospice House. She was born September 23, 1913 in Cottle County, TX. to Jim & Irene Biddy. She was a retired restaurant manager. Viola was a lover of people and loved the Lord very much.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husbands, C. W. Winford & J. C. Browning, and son Rex and sister, Floy Johnson.
She is survived by her son, Rocky Winford of Odessa, daughter, Suzy Brown & husband Tom of Littlefield, (5) grandchildren, Whitney, Torey, Ben Chuck and Kyle, (5) great-grandchildren, Sean Erin, Colin, Taylor, Chris & Emma.
Funeral services were held 3:00 p.m. Friday, January 20, 2006 at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jimmy Braswell officiating. Interment was at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Odessa - Sara Hernandez, anyone who knew her called her “Meter”, our mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She is truly an unforgettable woman who broke the mold when she entered this world. Odessa - Richie “Ricky” Holguin, 47 years of age, of Odessa, passed away on January 22, 2006 at Medical Center Hosptial. He was born on July 3, 1958 in Odessa, Texas to Esiquel and Guadalupe Holguin Sr. He was employed in the construction industry and was a Christian. Ricky was preceded in death by his father; Esiquel and brother; Johnny Holguin. He is survived by his mother; Lupe Holguin of Odessa, brother Esiquel “Tito” Holguin Jr. of Odessa sisters; Betty Olivarez and her husband Mike and Diane Holguin both of Odessa, 9 nieces and 6 nephews. A Prayer service will held today at 7:00 PM at Odessa Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral services are set for Wednesday 2:00 PM January 25, 2006 at Odessa Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverend Samuel Ramirez and Reverend Rosario Hill officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jesse Mancha, Michael Olivarez, Eran Olivarez, T.J. Holguin, Joshua Holguin and John Holguin.

WIZARD WELLS - Esta Crow, 84, of Andrews, a homemaker, died Friday, Dec. 16, 2005, at Permian Regional Medical Center in Andrews.

She was born in Paducah. She was a 21-year resident of Andrews.

ODESSA - R.L. “Pappy” Wilson, 90, of Stephenville, a retired oilfield pumper, died Thursday, Dec. 15, 2005, at an assisted living facility in Stephenville.
Services were at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Sunset Memorial Gardens Chapel with Brother Dickens officiating. Burial was at Sunset Memorial Gardens cemetery. Arrangements are by Lacy Funeral Home.
He was born in Big Spring. He was Baptist.
