Opal Carrie Dobbs
Odessa - Opal Carrie McKnight Dobbs of Odessa, age 90, died Tuesday, January 31, 2006. Opal was born September 16, 1915 in a stone farmhouse near Neal, Kansas to Carrie Dell Glendenning McKnight and Carl Larkin McKnight. After the death of her mother in January 1919, she, her brother and sister were with relatives and her father in several locations.
In April 1921 Carl McKnight married
Frances Louise Johnson Eastman whose husband had died in 1917. The family lived in an oil field camp, Teterville, for a year or so, then moved to Eureka, Kansas. Opal finished school there, and then attended Emporia State Teachers College for 2 years. She taught school for one year. She then went to work for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company, as an operator. She worked there until her marriage to Paul Bennett Dobbs, September 14, 1940. The newlyweds lived in Lawrence, Kansas where Paul was employed by the Lawrence Daily Journal World. At the outbreak of World War II he volunteered for the Volunteer Officer Candidate School. While Paul was in school, Opal worked for Hercules Powder Company. After receiving his commission the couple lived briefly in several locations, including Little Rock, AR; Columbus, GA and Lebanon, MO. When Paul went overseas in April 1944, Opal moved in with her mother, Frances McKnight and sister Shirley in Cottonwood Falls, KS. Paul, Jr. was born April 14, 1944 and was a week old when Paul left for Europe and the war. Opal & Paul, Jr. remained in Cottonwood Falls until Paul’s return in January ‘46. Then they returned to Lawrence and the Journal World.
In December 1946, Paul accepted a job with the newspaper in Miami, Oklahoma. A year later an opportunity arose at the Odessa American and the family numbering four now, (Kevin was born May 31, 1947 in Miami) made another move to Odessa, Texas.
On September 14, 1950, Paul and Opal went to dinner to celebrate their 10th anniversary. When they returned home the baby sitter said “You had a telephone call, Mr. Dobbs, and you’re back in the army.” This was during the Korean War, and the family moved to Fort Smith, AR and Paul was stationed at Camp Chaffee. Dennis was born at the base hospital, April 18, 1951. While there, Paul received a medical discharge from the army and it was back to Odessa and the Odessa American.
In 1956, Paul left the Odessa American and went into business for himself with the purchase of a commercial printing plant, to be known as Dobbs Printing Co., Inc. Her second son, Kevin, started working with the company while still in high school. Paul died in May 1983 and Kevin took over the business. Opal remained in Odessa in the house she and Paul had had built in 1952.
