Omer Jaye Sharp
McCamey - The Reverend Omer Jaye Sharp of McCamey, Texas, and formerly of Odessa, Texas, passed away at his home on Thursday, February 16, 2006, after a lengthy illness.
Omer was born July 13, 1929, in San Antonio, Texas, to his parents Frank Dillon Sharp and Doris Margaret Thompson Sharp. He graduated from South San Antonio High School in 1947. He continued his education to earn five degrees which were conferred upon him by Corpus Christi University, Trinity University, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, and North Texas State University.
He was ordained as a Southern Baptist Minister in 1955.
Omer had cerebral palsy all his life as a result of a birth injury, but he never allowed it to slow him down. He learned to drive (despite his mother’s strong protests) and passed his drivers license test in a car with a standard transmission. He never needed any special equipment in his car yet he was able to drive coast to coast many times and through several winters in the ice and snow of West Virginia. He fell down sometimes, but he would just get up and walk again. He would always say, “As long as I can get up one more time than I fall down, I will be fine.”
He pastored several churches in the Clarksburg, West Virginia, area, and was on the faculty of Alderson-Broaddus College in Philippi, West Virginia. He also traveled extensively for many years holding seminars, preaching, and doing evangelistic work.
Omer was preceded in death by his parents and by one son, Jaye Hamilton Sharp. He is survived by his wife, Retta Carol Nutter Sharp and by three sons, Gayle Franklin Sharp and his wife Cleta of Fort Stockton, Jonathan Lyman Sharp and his wife Kari of McCamey, Marcus Jason Sharp and his wife Ginger of Lubbock, and one daughter Elena Dawn Sharp González and her husband Hugo of McCamey. God saw you getting tired and a cure was not to be, so He put His arms around you and whispered, “Come to Me.” With tearful eyes we watched you suffer and saw you fade away, and though we loved you dearly, we could not make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating, your little hands at rest, and although our hearts are broken, we know God only takes the best. We Love You.
The family is thankful to Murry Fly Elementary teachers and students and the community neighborhood for their support in this time of need.
Love your children for who they are, even though you don’t like what they may do. For one day they may disappear from you, like a falling star, and missing them is too much pain to go through. We love you and miss you very much, but we also know that now you are with our Lord, Jesus and God.
Contributions to help with expenses may be made in the Brandon Blank Benefit Fund at any American State Bank or may be dropped off at the office of Murry Fly Elementary School.
