Luke Armstrong
MIDLAND -- Luke Armstrong, 65, a longtime resident of Midland, passed away Friday, March 26, 1999.
Luke was born May 22, 1932, in Eastland. He graduated from Odessa High School. He worked many years in the oil industry as well as the insurance business. Luke was a member of the Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed lodge activities and took pleasure in helping children in need of being referred to the Shriner’s Hospital. He was a member of Midland Lutheran Church.
Mr. Armstrong was preceded in death by a son, Glen Gregory, on February 6, 1999.
Survivors include mother, Jamie Price of Eastland; sister, Jean Parsons of Odessa; daughter, Lisa Greenhaw of Plainview; daughter-in-law, Mickie Gregory of Plainview; a granddaughter, Amanda Ramby; three grandsons, Christopher Gregory, Jamason Gregory and Nathan Gregory, all of Plainview. He also has two nieces, Beverly Phillips and Sherry Pinkerton, both of Odessa; and a nephew, Ronnie Joe Armstrong, of Salt Lake City.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, March 29, 1999, at Ellis Funeral Home Chapel. Graveside services will be held in Resthaven Memorial Park. Scottish Rites will be given by Masonic Lodge members. Arrangements are under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home.
Jeanne Allen
ODESSA -- Jeanne Allen, 58, of Odessa passed away July 16, 1999, at Medical Center Hospital. She was born Dec. 3, 1940, in Hooker, Okla., to Eugene and Grace Huddleston Akers.
Jeanne grew up in Perryton. She married
Bill Allen on March 1, 1969, in Lamesa. They came to Odessa in 1969.
She was a homemaker and had worked in the past for floral shops.
She was very creative and enjoyed needlepoint and painting. Her favorite pastime was hugging her grandchildren.
Graveside services are scheduled at 4 p.m. Saturday, July 17, 1999, at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
The Rev. Don Fankhauser of Antioch Christian Church is officiating.
Arrangements are under the direction of Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.
Survivors include her husband, Bill Allen of Odessa; her daughters, Johnna Wilkerson and husband, Mitchell, of Odessa and Stephanie Todd and husband, Perry, also of Odessa; her sister, Sue Lackey of Temecula, Calif.; and her grandchildren, Jonathan, Dylan, Taylor and Madison.
Beatrice White Somerford
MONAHANS -- Beatrice White Somerford, 80, of Monahans, died Thursday, July 15, 1999, in Monahans.
Bea was a loving wife, mother and devoted grandmother. She was an artist and belonged to the Sand Hill Art Club. She and Chief were co-owners of Chief’s Rock Shop. She designed the jewelry and sold paintings and ran the Rock Shop. Bea also enjoyed camping and fishing and rock hunting before ill health made her unable to do any more. Bea was a member of First Baptist Church.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Daniel and Pansy Hendren, four brothers and her husband, Sid White.
She is survived by her husband, A.R. Somerford of Monahans; daughters, Jo Ellen Pullin of Grove, Okla., Ginger Helm of Abilene and Linda Hall of Orange; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one precious great-great-grandson, Cody.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Harkey Funeral Chapel in Monahans with the Rev. Dr. Gordon Cox officiating. Graveside services will be at 4 p.m. Monday at Elmwood Memorial cemetery in Abilene, with the Rev. Don Greenway officiating.
The family request memorials to be made to West Texas Rehabilitation Center in Abilene. Arrangements are by Harkey Funeral Home.
Ruth Murphy
ODESSA -- Ruth Murphy, 74, of Odessa, died Wednesday, July 14, 1999, at Odessa Regional Hospital.
Services will be at 10 a.m. today at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jim Ray Brown officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
She was born June 25, 1925, in Corsicana. She married
Edward H. Murphy June 14, 1979, in Midland.
Mrs. Murphy moved to Odessa in 1948 from Breckenridge. She was a homemaker and a member of Greenfield Acres Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Edward Murphy of Odessa; brother, Russell Noletubby of Sterling City; sisters, Wanda Smith of Woodson and Joyce Wilhelm of Grandfalls. Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
Tollie Burl Nicholas Sr.
ODESSA -- Tollie Burl Nicholas Sr. was born on April 1, 1926, in Eastland to John Calvin and Agnes Adelia Matthews Nicholas.
He passed away July 15, 1999. Mr. Nicholas served in the South Pacific during World War lI with the Army. He moved to Odessa in 1947 where he met and then married
Betty Jo Rutherford on July 4, 1948.
Mr. Nicholas was the owner of VINCO Paint and Wall Coverings, and also worked as a contractor. He had worked for T & E Builders several years ago. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and member of the Masonic Lodge #955, the VFW Post 4372, former lieutenant governor of the A.M.B.U.C.S., Commander of the National Guard, 36th Reconnaissance Unit from 1947 to 1956, a Little League baseball coach, Permian Band Booster Club and the Permian Booster Club.
Mr. Nicholas is survived by his wife, Betty Jo Nicholas of Odessa; son, Nick and wife Mary Ann Nicholas, of Plano; a daughter, Darlyne and husband Andy Ervin of Andrews; brothers, Lester Nicholas of Odessa and Donald Nicholas of Eastland; sisters, Beth Mayhall of Abilene and Mary Bailey of Cisco; grandchildren, Caity and Drew Ervin and Evan and Christopher Nicholas.
Services will be at 11 a.m. today at Sunset Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Ernest Easley officiating. Interment to follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Dayton S. Wester
ODESSA -- Dayton Sparkman Wester, 85, of Andrews died peacefully at home on Saturday, April 24, 1999.
Services will be at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, April 27, 1999, in the First Baptist Church in Andrews.
He was born Sept. 14, 1913, in Pickwick. He attended school in Padgett, but following the death of his father, chose to quit during his senior year to support his mother, two brothers and two sisters.
After attempting to join the military services and failing due to a childhood injury, he used his mechanical talents to support the World War II effort by working as a machinist supervisor and millwright in the shipyard in Long Beach, Calif. He returned to Texas to marry Maezelle Gray on May 25, 1942. While they resided in California, Dayton joined the Masonic Lodge in 1944.
After returning to Texas in 1945, they lived in Olney until they moved to Andrews in 1951. He served the Andrews community in many ways. He was a member of First Baptist Church, was a member of the evening Lions Club until it disbanded and a past member of the Sheriff’s Posse. He was a licensed pilot and loved to fly.
Because of his love for the automobile industry, he worked in some capacity with cars for the largest part of his working career. He sold Fords at Johnny Smith Motor Company for 30 years, retiring at age 74.
His wife, Maezelle Wester survives him; as well as his children, Jimmy Dan Wester, Gayle Dobbs and son-in law, Dwayne Dobbs, Chuck Wester and daughter-in-law, Julie Wester. He had eight grandchildren, Jana Inderhees and husband, Marc Inderhees, Michael Wester and wife, Shannon Wester, Wendy Wester, Spencer Dobbs and wife, Cary Dobbs, Kristy Winchell and husband, Scott Winchell, Mia Means, Jana Wester and Nicholas Wester. He had one great grandson, Nathan Means. One sister, Jerry Austin, of Burleson also survives him.
The family suggests memorials to Home Hospice of Odessa, Mission Dorado Baptist Church building fund or First Baptist Church, Andrews.
Jaime Alba Ramirez Sr.
ODESSA -- Mass for Jaime Alba Ramirez Sr., 71, of Odessa, will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father Frank Chavez officiating. Interment will follow at Rose Hill cemetery.
Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. today at Martinez Funeral Home.
Public visitations will be held from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. Wednesday at Martinez Funeral Home Chapel.
Mr. Ramirez died Sunday, April 25, 1999, in Odessa. He was born Feb. 29, 1928, in Ozona to Ester Alba Valdez and Eugenio Ramirez Sr. He was preceded in death by his father, Eugenio Ramirez Sr., and his stepfather, Roman Valdez.
Mr. Ramirez was a self-employed tile setter and was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife, Edna Ramirez of Odessa; his mother, Ester Valdez of Odessa; his stepmother, Felicita Ramirez of Haltom City; sons, Jaime Ramirez Jr. and his wife, Cathy, and Roland Ramirez and his wife, Jerri, all of Odessa; daughters, Gilda Jimenez and her husband, Ralph Jr., Leonor Reyes and her husband, David S., and Stella Lee and her husband, Ron, all of Odessa; brother, Eugene Alexander Ramirez Jr. of Oklahoma; sisters, Esperanza "Ester" Flores of North Carolina, Rosa Garcia and Margaret Shannon, both of Odessa, and Eloisa Flores of Midland; stepsister, Melissa Zenteno of Haltom City; 17 grandchildren; and 15 great-great grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons.
Martinez Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
William Virgil "Bill" Jones
ODESSA -- William Virgil "Bill" Jones, 93, of Odessa died April 25, 1999, at Avalon Nursing Center. He was born March 24, 1906, to Burkley and Cordie Jones in Eastland County.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 27, I999, in the chapel of Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors with the Rev. Terry Pugh officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are by Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors.
He married
his wife, Cora, in 1927. Mr. Jones moved to Odessa from Big Lake in 1963. He was a member of First Baptist Church in both Crane and Big Lake. He loved to play dominos, checkers and baseball; he also loved to swim and had swum the Brazos River.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Cora Lee Sanders, in 1985; brothers, Wylie, Chester, Roy Lee and Leonard Jones; and a sister, Bula Mae Willis.
Mr. Jones is survived by his son, Virgil (Spike) Jones Jr. of Midland; daughters, Dorothy Jones Stroud and Patricia Sanders Kelley, both of Odessa; brother, Burkley N. Jones of Odessa; sister, Cordie Mae Jackson of O’Brien; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Glenn Turnbow, J.W. Willis, Troy Kelley, Paul Price Jr., Adrian Hamilton, Ronnie Sanders and Cletus Turnbow.
