Jackilu Youngblood
Monahans - Jackilu Youngblood was born Jackie Irene Duncan to James “Jack” Hampton Duncan and Johnnie Irene Duncan Nee Pittman in Lockney, Texas on November 1, 1928. They divorced a couple of years later. Irene then met and married
Leo Dickey, the man Jackie called Daddy for the rest of her life. They lived in Amarillo, Texas until the depression forced them to move to California to find work. Jackie graduated from Corona High School in California in 1945 (still wearing her cowboy boots!)
She met and married
John Edgar Youngblood, Jr. in 1947 and had 2 sons. In 1950, the family moved to West Texas, looking for work. In Odessa, they separated, and in 1952, Jackie moved to Monahans and stayed for 53 years. She raised 2 sons by herself, by carhopping, waiting tables, bartending and as owner of a Bar and Grill. She did this for 24 years. She worked at “M” System for about 10 years after that, and then very late in life, she found the work she was best suited for. She went to work for the Ward County Historical Commission at the Archives under Elizabeth Heath, a wonderful lady. They became very good friends as they shared a love for preserving the history of their beloved Monahans, Ward County and West Texas. She also fought hard to keep Ward County and West Texas from becoming the Nation’s nuclear waste dump.
She became very interested in her genealogy and found ancestors that put her with “The Daughters of the American Revolution”, “The United Daughters of the Confederacy”, and “Texas First Families”. She was very proud of her heritage.
Jackilu was fun loving, interesting, adventuresome and reveled in knowledge. She knew more about oilfield work than any 10 women and could talk for hours about roughnecks and their work. She loved West Texas and the hard working people and knew most of the ranchers and their work. Several years ago, she found that she had cancer and she fought it tooth and nail. She eventually lost this battle on the evening of April 24, 2006, at the age of 77.
She is survived by her 2 sons, John E. Youngblood, III, of Odessa and Timothy Malone Youngblood of Springfield, Missouri, 1 grandson, T. Sgt. John Colby Youngblood of the U. S. Air Force, at Travis A.F.B., California, 1 granddaughter, Karen of Missouri, 2 great-grandsons, Aaron and John Colby, Jr., and a 3rd great-grandchild on the way. Also all Youngbloods, a half-sister, Zeolete Banks of Oregon and an uncle, Jake Pittman of Amarillo.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Odyssey Hospice of Odessa, Texas, for their invaluable help and care.
Jackilu will be missed by her family and many, many friends. God Bless You, Jackilu.
Memorial Services are set for 2 p.m. Friday, April 28, 2006 at Harkey Family Funeral Services Chapel. Services are under the direction of Harkey Family Funeral Services.
