Mary M. Wingate
ODESSA -- Mary Maxine Wingate, 93, of Odessa, a retired nurse, died Tuesday, March 30, 1999, at her residence.
She was born January 13, 1906, in Bastrop County, Texas, the daughter of George Henry Wilson and Pauline Harrison Wilson. She attended school near Taylor in Williamson County and high school in Elgin, Texas. She married
in 1924 to Philip Lindsley Wingate who died in 1972. She moved to Odessa the following year to be near her daughter and grandson.
She was a member of the Crescent Park Baptist Church, Odessa, for the past 26 years. She had been a long-time member of the Order of Eastern Star, attending the Friendship Chapter, OES, that awarded her a 50-year pin.
She was also a member of the Medical Center Hospital Auxiliary. While living in Odessa Mrs. Wingate made many friends, along with many acquaintances among West Texans.
Survivors include her daughter, Betty Wingate Orbeck, Odessa; her grandson, Mark Lindsley Orbeck; his wife, Naomi Baker Orbeck, two great-grandsons, Richard Brandon Orbeck and Travis Kyle Orbeck, all of Keller, Texas. She was also survived by one niece, Barbara Mosher, Odessa; three nephews, Rev. Charles D. Wilson, Flower Mound, Texas; Walter Darrell Wilson, Friendswood, Texas and Riley Keith, Corpus Christi, Texas; one great niece, Janice Mosher Dunn, and two great nephews, David and John Mosher.
Her husband died in March 1972, and her only son, Curtis Dean Wingate, Phoenix, Arizona, died in October, 1982.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., Saturday, April 3, 1999, in the chapel of Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors, with the Rev. Johnny Dickerson officiating.
Interment will be at Capitol Memorial Park near Austin.
The family requests memorials be made to the Crescent Park Baptist Church or the Ector County Library, both of Odessa.

Velma Verne Bell
PECOS -- Graveside services for Velma Verne Bell, 90, of Pecos are scheduled for Saturday, April 3, 1999, at 2 p.m. at Fairview cemetery in Pecos with the Rev. Willis Greer officiating. Arrangements by Pecos Funeral Home.
Mrs. Bell died Thursday, April 1, 1999, at Avalon Place. She was born May 21, 1908, in Eastland County. She was preceded in death by her husband JD Bell.
Mrs. Bell came to Odessa five years ago from Pecos, where she had lived since 1936. She was a secretary of the Pecos Chamber of Commerce and also worked for Rediger’s Pharmacy for many years. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Pecos.
Survivors include a daughter, Patsy Beauchamp, and her husband Don of Pecos; a daughter, Sonnye Dingler and her husband Bill of Odessa; a son, Bobby Bell and his wife Janice of Odessa; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Gerald "Hud" Huddleston
ODESSA -- Gerald "Hud" Huddleston, 63, of Odessa died March 30, 1999, at Midland Memorial Hospital. He was born March 16, 1936, in Grassland.
Hud graduated from Andrews High School. He was a member of Crescent Park Baptist Church and he was associated with Huddleston Equipment in its early years. He was presently owner of Gerald Huddleston Pipe Company. He loved to fish and hunt and to watch Nimitz and Mojo football. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Gary Lamarr Huddleston in 1990.
Mr. Huddleston is survived by his wife, Vickie Maddox Huddleston of Odessa; son, Doak Huddleston of Odessa; daughter, Dr. Sherri Gillham of Midland; mother, Carrie Lee Huddleston of Monahans; brother, David Huddleston of Monahans; grandchildren, Bailey Jo Huddleston and Dylan Lee Huddleston.
Family visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 1, 1999, at Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, April 2, 1999, at Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Jimmy Braswell officiating. Interment will follow at 4 p.m. Friday, April 2, 1999, at Andrews cemetery in Andrews.
If desired, Memorials may be made to a local Hospice organization.
Johnnie Leslie
ODESSA -- Services for Johnnie Leslie, 85, of Odessa will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Hubbard-Kelly Chapel with the Revs. Jarvis Philpot and Emmett Barnard officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Leslie died Monday, March 29, 1999, at his residence.
He was born Oct. 28, 1913, in Carthage. He married
Cornell Minter Dec. 30, 1932, in Carthage.
Mr. Leslie worked for various engineering and construction firms, constructing compressor stations, gasoline plants, chemical plants and refineries. He worked in the rigging and heavy equipment departments.
Today, we have monstrous cranes to erect gigantic complexes to process oil products and lift huge vessels. During the 1950s, when the complex south of town, known then as El Paso Products Plant, was being constructed, no such equipment existed. In those days, John was well known as a "super rigger." All tall vessels and heavy equipment were set with poles. This extremely hazardous and dangerous work required a person who was highly skilled with nerves of steel. John was such a man and will be remembered as one of Odessa’s pioneers who helped to bridge the past to the future.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lola Alice and John Malcom Leslie; two brothers, Dawson and Owen Leslie; and a sister, Hazel Capps.
Survivors include his wife, Cornell Leslie of Odessa; sons, Jay M. Leslie of Odessa and John T. Leslie of Longview; daughter, Patsy R. ALbertson of Jal, N.M.; six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

John Raymond "Ray" Barham
ODESSA -- John Raymond "Ray" Barham, 89, of Odessa passed away March 28, 1999, in a local hospital. Mr. Barham was born July 31, 1909, in Stephenville. He had worked as a lease operator for Conoco Oil Company. He married
Thelma Greer on Aug. 4, 1977, in Odessa. He was a longtime member of Second Baptist Church and a dedicated Christian.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Tammy and Matthew Barham; one son, Gerald Barham; a brother, Walter Barham; and his wives, Mable Grice Barham and Agatha Phillips Barham.
He is survived by his wife, Thelma Barham of Odessa; one son, Ed Barham and his wife, Gradene, of Odessa; one daughter-in-law, Patricia Barham of San Antonio; three stepdaughters, Barbara Groening of Wingate, Rosemary Parks of Midland and Judy Grigsby and her husband, Cuin, of Abilene; one brother, Robert Barham and his wife, Clydie, of Snyder; 12 grandchildren; Brett Barham and wife, Mara, of Lubbock, Dena Gray and husband, Greg, of Colleyville, Scott Barham and wife, Michelle, of San Antonio, Steve Barham and wife, Tammy, of San Antonio, Ann Beth Pena and husband, Gordon, of Houston, Wayne Groening and wife, Lyn, Rick Groening, Mark Groening and his wife, Janene, Prenisy Hamm and husband, Doug, Gina FarreIl and husband, Jim, Les Ming and wife, Lynn, and Gary Gregsby and wife, Luann; and 27 great-grandchildren.
Ray had been a resident of Notrees and Odessa since 1947. He was an accomplished gardener with a lifelong love of the outdoors. He will always be remembered by those who knew him for his kindness and his servant spirit.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 31, 1999, at Second Baptist Church with the Revs. Bruce Troy and Truman Warren officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens under the direction of Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.

John A. Smith
ODESSA -- Graveside services for John A. Smith, 87, of Odessa will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Sunset Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Bob Bratcher officiating.
Mr. Smith died Saturday, March 27, 1999, at Medical Center Hospital. He was born Feb. 22, 1912, in DeLeon. He married
Winnie Mae Weathersby April 17, 1935, in Odessa.
Mr. Smith moved to Odessa in 1989 from Santa Clara, Calif. He was a retired electrician. He was a member of the Woodmen of the World and I.B.E.W.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Winnie Mae Smith of Odessa; daughter, Patricia Cauthen, and her husband, Larry, of Odessa; two granddaughters, Deborah Furie and Sandra Koenig; eight great-grandchildren, Stephanie Newberry, Jarrett, Kristin, Andrew and Sean Furie and Donnie, Matthew and Jonathan Koenig; and three great-great-grandsons, Dustin, Jordon and Vincent Newberry, all of Grass Valley, Calif.

Charlotte Cooper
MIDLAND -- Mary Charlotte Cooper was born Nov. 29, 1922, in Denver, Colo., to Louis and Rachel Octavia (Wagner) Vanhille. She graduated from East High in Denver, Colo.
On Oct. 3, 1942, she married
Donald Cooper. Mrs. Cooper was a longtime member of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Trinity, where she served as Church Secretary for six-and-a-half years. She was also on the Auxiliary Board of Trinity Towers where she taught fitness and exercise. In addition, she had been a member of the Children’s Service League, on the Board of the YMCA and a Girl Scout Troop Leader.
Mrs. Cooper died at a local hospital Sunday, March 28, 1999.
She is survived by her husband, Donald Cooper of Midland; her son, David Cooper of Midland; her daughter, Cindy Cooper Smith of Edmond, Okla.; one grandchild, Sasha Smith of Edmond, Okla.; and has extended family through out Texas, Colorado, California and Kansas.
Memorial services have been scheduled for Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Ellis Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dr. John Setzer officiating. The family requests memorials be directed to Southwestern Organ Donation Bank.

Clayton Eugene Doss
ODESSA -- Services for Clayton Eugene Doss, 68, of Odessa will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 30, 1999, at Parkview Church of Christ with Charles Jones officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Bobby Patteron, Jay Doss, Richard Doss, Jessie Doss, James Doss and Wyatt Overton.
Mr. Doss died Sunday, March 28, 1999, at his residence. He married
Wilma Moore March 29, 1984, in Odessa.
Mr. Doss moved to Odessa in 1963 from Colorado City. He was a retired pipefitter. He was a member of Parkview Church of Christ.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mack and Merle Doss; brothers, Jimmy and James W. "Bob" Doss; and granddaughter, Carrah Carrasco.
Survivors include his wife, Wilma Doss of Odessa; sons, Kenneth Doss and his wife, Connie, of Clyde, and William Robert Doss of Clearfield, Utah; daughters, Barbara Cook and her husband, James, of Corpus Christi, Patricia Carrasco and her husband, Abel, of Odessa, and Debra Kay Martin and her husband, Keith, of Crane; and ten grandchildren.
