Warren L. Bishop
ODESSA -- On March 25, 1999, Warren L. Bishop, 50, went home to be with our Lord after a long and brave battle with Huntington’s Disease. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, March 28, 1999, at Saint Andrews Cumberland Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Craig Martindale and Rev. Dr. Jimmy Braswell officiating. Interment will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Family visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, March 27, 1999, at Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors. Arrangements by Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors.
Mr. Bishop was born Nov. 4, 1948, in Oklahoma City. He grew up and graduated from high school in Borger. He graduated in 1972 with a BBA from West Texas State University.
On July 1, 1969, Warren married
Joan Friend Bishop. They were blessed with two wonderful children, Brent and Kimberly. Warren was very proud of his family. He loved watching his children in their activities at school and church and his face always lit up when he talked about them.
Mr. Bishop was a member of Saint Andrews Cumberland Presbyterian Church and Promise Keepers where he had so many, many friends. He always felt he was surrounded by Angels, by all of their prayers, help and support.
Mr. Bishop worked for A-1 Homes and HSA Mortgage until 1991. His favorite hobbies were watching the Dallas Cowboys, reading the newspaper, going to the movies and eating chocolate chip cookies and Blue Bell ice cream.
Warren was a fighter and he fought this terrible disease for many years. The staff at the Permian Basin Rehabilitation Center became his second family as they fought the Huntington’s battle with him. He loved them all dearly.
Mr. Bishop touched so many hearts and made so many friends. He was taken such good care of his last few months of life by the caring people of Home Hospice and the Avalon Place Nursing Home.
Mr. Bishop was preceded in death by his mother, Helen McDonald.
Warren is survived by his wife, Joan Bishop of Odessa; his son, Brent Bishop of Seattle, Wash.; his daughter, Kimberly Bishop of Odessa; father, A.L. Bishop of Royce City; stepfather, Lloyd McDonald of Chattanooga, Tenn.; stepmother, Wilma Green of Oklahoma City; sisters, Wilma Parker of Houston and Lorraine McDonald of Amarillo; brother, Paul McDonald of Springfield, Mo.; along with many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and in-laws.

Daphne Mae (Ann) Hulsey
HEBER SPRINGS, Ark. -- Daphne Mae (Ann) Hulsey went home to be with her Lord Wednesday, March 24, 1999. She was born Jan. 4, 1918, in Stonewall, Okla., the daughter of Eugene and Lydia Barnett. She was married
July 24, 1946, to George C. Hulsey, who preceded her in death March 16, 1995.
She is survived by four children, Barbara Adamson of Paris, Frelan Fields of Odessa, Wiley Hulsey of North Little Rock, Ark., and Kent Hulsey of Heber Springs, Ark.; 10 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Also surviving are a sister, Minnie Wade of Oklahoma City; numerous nieces and nephews and a host of loving family and friends.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Monroe Barnett, and one sister, Opal Wells.
The Hulseys moved to Heber Springs, Ark., from Odessa in 1982, where they became active members in the First Baptist Church. Ann attended and taught adult classes and was an active member of W.M.U.
She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend.
Services were held Friday, March 26, 1999, in the First Baptist Church sanctuary. Interment was at Cleburne County Memorial Gardens cemetery. Funeral arrangements were handled by Olmstead Funeral Home.
Dessie Mae Hicks Jackson
Dessie Mae Hicks Jackson, 91, was born March 18, 1908, to Mack Henry and Maude (Clemons) Hicks, who resided in Council Hill. "Mama Mae," as she was lovingly called, passed away on Thursday, March 18, 1999, at Muskogee Regional Medical Center. She lived most of her life around the Council Hills area, and had cooked for the school for six years before moving to Odessa, Texas, to work for the Scott Theaters and Plains Drive-In for 22 years until retirement. "Mama Mae" then moved back to Checotah, where she resided for 27 years. Words cannot express what a loving and wonderful mother she was. Her love and generosity have touched many lives as her heart and home housed everyone.
Survivors are her children; Boots and Wallace Scott, Odessa, Texas, Mack and Karen Jackson, Pasadena, Texas, June and Ovid King, Checotah, Okla., Lawton and Kim Jackson, Spring, Texas, Thomas and Linda Jackson, Houston; 19 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren; sisters, Hazel Franklin, Grace Lemon and Shirley Paden, all of Council Hill, and Inez Holland of Morris, Okla.; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Jackson was preceded in death by her parents, Mack Henry and Maude Hicks; sister, Lena Parks, Odessa; brothers, Tom Hicks, Savannah, Ga., Perry Hicks and Gibson Hicks, both of Council Hill.
Services were held Sunday, March 21, 1999, at 2:30 p.m. in the Council Hill Methodist Church with the Rev. Larry Haggard and Mack A. Jackson officiating. Burial was held at Council Hill cemetery. Pallbearers were her children.
Benancio Cantu
ODESSA -- Benancio Cantu, 87, of Odessa, died Wednesday March 24, 1999, in a local hospital. Mr. Cantu was born March 13, 1912, in Mission, Texas.
Prayer services were held Wednesday evening at Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors Chapel. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday March 25, 1999, at Buenas Nuevas Assembly of God Church in Odessa. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens, under the direction of Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors.
Mr. Cantu married
Elana Garza in 1933 in Mission. She preceded in death him in 1971.
He worked in the construction business for many years.
Survivors include a son, Alejandro Navarro of Sunnyside, Wash.; a daughter, Juanita Salgado of Odessa; 13 grandchildren: Thomas, Alex, Humberto, Carlos, David and Joe Navarro, Dora Casdos, Alicia Alverez, Jose and Migel Garcia, Ester Garcia, Benjamin and Ricardo Salgado; 36 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Benjamin Salgado Jr., Ricardo Salgado, Jose Garcia, Alfonzo Hernandez, Ramon Sigela and Miguel Tarrango.
Melba M. Guthrie
EARLY -- Melba M. Guthrie, 70, died Monday in a Brownwood hospital.
Services were held Wednesday in Heartland Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Steve McMeans officiating. Burial was in the Cross Cut cemetery in Northern Brown County.
Mrs. Guthrie was born in Hope, Ark. In 1947, she married
Earl Ray Montgomery in Tyler. He preceded her in death in 1969. In June of 1972, she married
Wendell Guthrie in Andrews. In 1990, she moved to Brown County where she was a homemaker and a member of Coggin Avenue Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Wendell Guthrie of Brownwood; a son, Craig Montgomery of Arlington; daughters and sons-in-law, Shelia and Danny Norris and Susie and Danny Schnaubert, all of Odessa; and five grandchildren.
Mrs. Guthrie was preceded in death by her first husband, Earl Ray Montgomery of Odessa, and her parents, Grady and Eva Landers Moore.
Heartland Funeral Home of Early was in charge of arrangements.
Odessa Hanes
ODESSA -- Odessa Hanes, affectionately known as "the Donut Lady" to most of the community, passed away Tuesday, March 23, 1999. She was 86 years old.
Odessa was born in Comanche, Texas, on April 29, 1912, to Samuel and Genoa Vineyard. She married
Virgil Hanes on April 4, 1932. She came to Odessa in 1948 and later went to work for the Southern Maid Donut Shop on 8th St. During her 40 years at the Donut Shop, she served several generations with a great big smile and enjoyed watching the children grow up. It gave her great joy to be able to see the many friends she had made over the years on a daily basis. She was a member of Highland United Methodist Church.
Odessa was preceded in death by her husband Virgil Hanes, her parents, her 13 brothers and sisters, her stepson and her son-in-law, Drexel Melton.
She is survived by her daughter: Maxine Merritt and her husband, Tommy of Odessa; stepdaughter: Joyce Glaze and her husband, Bud, of Arizona; grandsons: Dwain Melton and his wife Annette and their daughter, Amanda; Mike Melton and his wife Missy and their sons, J.D. and Michael and daughter, Nina. Also, many nieces and nephews.
Odessa was a person of strong will and dignity and will be loved and remembered always.
Visitation will be at Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors in Odessa, Thursday, March 25, 1999. Visitation will also be held at Comanche Funeral Home in Comanche, Friday, March 26, 1999. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 27, 1999, at Taylors Chapel in Comanche with Rev. Donnie Auvenshine officiating. Interment will follow at Taylors Chapel cemetery. Arrangements by Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors.
If desired, memorials may be made to the West Texas Cancer Center in lieu of flowers.
Dorothy Lee Vore
ODESSA -- Services for Dorothy Lee Vore, 78, of Odessa will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Westminster Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Truman Warren officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Vore died Tuesday, March 23, 1999, at Medical Center Hospital after a short illness. She was born April 20, 1920, in Palestine. She married
E.M. "Gene" Vore Oct. 11, 1941. He died Jan. 14, 1979.
Mrs. Vore had been the office manager for Mesa Manufacturing Company. She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, E.M. "Gene" Vore; her son, David Allen Vore; and sister, Ruby Mae Heltebridle.
Survivors include her son, Steve Vore and his wife, Laurel, of Odessa; sister, Eloise Young of Rockport; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The family suggests memorials to American Heart Association.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
Anna Jane Beard
ODESSA -- Services for Anna Jane Beard, 65, of Odessa will be at 10 a.m. today at Martinez Funeral Home with the Rev. David Henry officiating. Burial will be at Rose Hill cemetery.
Mrs. Beard died Saturday, March 20, 1999, at Medical Center Hospital. She was born Feb. 14, 1934, in Anson and moved to Odessa in 1984 from Longview. She married
Jerry Beard Dec. 29, 1975. She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Beard was preceded in death by her husband; father, Mervil Burleson; mother, Odella Watts; son, Eddie Bury; and brother, Billy Burleson.
Survivors include her son, Dwayne Burt and his wife, Peggy, of Odessa; daughters, Georgia Deeds and her husband, Wade, of Odessa and Vicki Froud and her husband, Chuck, of Houston; sister, Peggy Newitt, of Odessa; and numerous nieces, nephews and loved ones.
Pallbearers will be family members.
Funeral arrangements are by Martinez Funeral Home.
