Phil Hayes
Odessa - Phil Hayes, 85, passed away November 19, 2006 in Big Spring, Texas at the Texas State Veterans Home. Born in Lexington, Mississippi on October 2, 1921, to Philip H. Hayes, Sr. and Dewetta Burkitt Hayes, he grew up in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. He graduated from Tulsa Central High School in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1939. Phil then attended Oklahoma A&M (now known as Oklahoma State University) where he was a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity. Remembered for his humor, Phil always had a joke for anyone who would listen.
As a young boy, Phil dreamed of flying airplanes. He would fly with his cousin in a WWI training plane barnstorming and would dream of flying the plane by himself. Following after his dream he enlisted in the Air Corps in March 1942 and was assigned to pre-flight school in San Antonio, Texas. In July 1942, after completing pre-flight school, he was assigned to primary training in Yukon, Oklahoma. Out of a class of 165 cadets, he was the first to fly solo; a fete of which he was quite proud. Phil was then assigned to Lubbock, Texas for twin engine training. In December 1942, while in Lubbock, he won several spot landing competitions. He graduated on January 14, 1943, in class 43A and was headed to combat.
As a pilot, he registered more than 2,200 hour of flying time. Between 1944 and 1945, he flew 35 combat missions (265 hours) out of Rattlesden, England, with the 8th Air Force, 447th Bomb Group, 711 Bomb Squadron, His most memorable experience of WWII was surviving a mid-air collision at 27,500 feet with 2,000 gallons of gas, and 12,500-lb bombs on board! With two engines out and a broken wing, Phil was able to fly his B-17 over 200 miles to Eindhoven, Holland where he was able to put the “Big Bird” on the ground, all crewmembers safe and sound. Phil was a believing man. Before each take off, he would ask his Lord for the mental and physical capabilities to bring his nine-man crew back safely. Through the years, phil never lost his faith and continued to live a life full of the heavenly spirit.
Phil left the Air Force in 1947 as a Captain and became a reservist. Phil made life long friends with his crew and fellow pilots staying in touch with them through the years. He attended numerous reunions, including his 50th reunion at the old base in Rattlesden, England in June 1997. Phil took great pride in being a veteran who fought for the country he loved. It taught him what to appreciate and how to cherish life itself. While his military days were the most treasured, they were not overshadowed by the work he did in Odessa during his professional career. Phil worked in the insurance industry for more than 50 years. In 1968, he opened Hayes Insurance, where he continued to work with his wife Judy up until his death. During his decades in the insurance business, Phil received numerous awards including Group Millionaire’s Club and the Million Dollar Sales Club.
Phil shared himself with several community organizations. When Phil lived in Midland during the early 60’s he had the lead role in the Midland Community Theatre’s first musical “Crazy Girl”. He also shared his voice in church choirs across the country for over 70 years. He was an active member of the Odessa Downtown Rotary for 30 years, where he was the song leader for 12 years and also a member of the Odessa Chamber of Commerce. Phil also supported many community projects including the Permian Basin Rehab Center, Crystal Ball Foundation, UTPB, and the Salvation Army. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Odessa.
Phil was devoted to his family. He is proceeded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife Judy, whom he adored and supported in all of her endeavors during their marriage of 30 years. He is also survived by his children, Tim Hayes of Odessa, Michelle Hayes of Odessa, Megan DiPesa and her husband David of The Woodland, TX, Phil Hayes, Jr. of Palo Alto, CA and Susan Edginton and her husband Chris of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. All it takes is a word,
that says he understands,
All it takes is a touch from strong but gentle hands,
All it takes is his smile to make a heart feel glad,
All it takes is the thought of him, a very special dad.
And somehow,
as the days go by,
One fact kept growing clearer-
Passing years didn’t change your dad,
Except to make you dearer.
