Harold E. Jones

Midland - Harold E. Jones, 87, ascended to heaven Sunday, February 25, 2007, after a courageous battle with complications of diabetes. Following private graveside services at Resthaven Memorial Park, a memorial will be held at First Christian Church on Wednesday, February 28, 2007, at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. David Nash and Rev. Pamela Vannoy officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home, 801 Andrews Hwy. Midland, Texas 79791 (432) 683-5555. To place on-line condolences visit www.mem.com.
From hardscrabble roots as the son of a Knippa rock quarry foreman, Harold put himself through college at the University of Texas at Austin and spent a lifetime pursuing a passion for geology in Midland.
He celebrated life as a fierce individualist, headstrong and determined to prove his worth in the world. After graduating from UT Austin in 1941, Harold served in the U.S. Air Corps and U.S. Coast Guard during WWII and participated in the invasion of Omaha Beach at Normandy aboard Coast Guard LST-262.
He liked to tell the story of proving his mettle in the boxing ring while a radar man with the nickname “Buddy” in the Coast Guard. Challenged to a fight by a deck hand, Harold dispatched his opponent with a single blow to the chin, knocking him cold. He was never challenged again. His geology career took root in Houston after the war, with a stint at Brazos Oil & Gas and his first big discovery - Anna Mae Brown. They wed and moved to Midland soon afterward. Harold worked for Stanolind Oil & Gas and Bankline Oil & Gas before launching a successful career as an independent geologist in 1957. His persistence led to working interests in several oil and gas discoveries.
He loved poring over geological logs and “sitting” on wells in the oil & gas heyday of the 50s and 60s or thumping opponents on his Scharbauer Drive tennis court or singing hymns at church (he led the singing at Fellowship Sunday School class at First Christian for over 50 years) and Christmas carols with family while doting on his eight grandchildren. He took great pride in the exploits of his four sons, who he and Anna Mae taught tenacity, integrity and Christian values. But most of all he loved Anna Mae, whom he married in 1948 and who, after 58 years of marriage, was beside him at his passing.
Harold was active in Toastmasters International for over 25 years. He was also a member of SIPES, AAPG and WTGS. He served First Christian Church as Deacon, Elder and Elder Emeritus.
He is survived by his wife and best friend, Anna Mae Jones; four sons, Harold E. “Hal” Jones Jr. of Raleigh, N.C., Stan Jones of Fort Worth and his wife Liz, Mike Jones of Midland and Ken Jones of Odessa and his wife Dianne; and eight grandchildren, Gwen, Jenny and Stephanie, all of Raleigh, Megan, Philip and Ross of Fort Worth and Robert and Jason of Odessa.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to MARC of First Christian Church of Midland.
