ODESSA - Services for Mary Jean Merritt, 82, are set for 11 a.m. Saturday, February 10, 2007 at Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors with Emmet Barnard officiating.
Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Family Visitation will be held on Friday, Feb. 9 in the chapel of Frank Wilson Funeral Directors from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Jean, a West Texas native, was called home on February 7, 2007, in Odessa.
Jean was born December 4, 1924 in Stanton, Texas to William Follis and Leona Wright Follis. She grew up in Lamesa, Texas and married
J.C. Turner on December 27, 1941. She spent several years living in West Texas farming with her husband and family.
In the early 1970’s, she attended Nursing School in Dallas, Texas where she became a LVN. After finishing school, she met and married
Harold Merritt of Ft. Worth. Jean and Harold spent the next several years playing golf and fishing.
Nanny, as she was affectionately known to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, was an avid painter with a deep passion for gardening. She also worked as a Hospice nurse for several years in Odessa prior to her retirement.
Nanny is remembered as a passionate mother and grandmother with a green thumb and an outgoing, adventurous spirit. She lived through her faith in God with the knowledge of His word.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands J.C. Turner and Harold Merritt. She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Joan Riley, Sue Heddin, Helen Lee, and brothers C.W. Follis and Douglas Follis.
Survivors include one sister, Linda Cook of Lubbock, daughters, Jackie Jones of Odessa, Diane Long and husband Lynn of Seminole, Texas, Ruth McCullough and husband Jack of Odessa, Texas, Carolyn Herrera and husband Art of Santa Fe, New Mexico, sons J.C. Turner and wife Donna of Hobbs, New Mexico, Craig Merritt of Denver City, Rick Merritt and wife Peggy of Dallas, Texas. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, 5 step-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews as well as many friends that loved her dearly.
Pallbearers will be Jeff Long, Buddy Long, Eric McCullough, David Reddell, Jonathan Stark, Travis Overton, Larry Darby, and Danny Jones.
Services are entrusted to Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors.
Herbert Ray Hawkins
KINGSLAND - Herbert Ray Hawkins left this world for a better one on Feb. 6, 2007, after a lengthy illness.
Ray, to his many friends, was born in Memphis, Texas on October 13, 1937, to John Herbert and Lola Viola Hawkins. He attended school in Lubbock, Texas and served two years in the U.S. Army. He married
Ruby Jolene DeSalvo on Feb. 6, 1965, in Lubbock.
Ray was employed as a journeyman glazier for over 30 years in Lubbock, Austin and Odessa and owned and operated glass shops in Austin and Odessa.
Ray enjoyed fishing, woodworking, racing and smoking racks of ribs at his home in Buchanan Dam for his large family and their friends.
His passionate love of car racing created a common bond with his sons and they each owned and raced their own cars at various Texas raceways.
Ray recommitted his life to Christ on August 31, 1980, and soon had the joy of seeing each of his family members come to the Lord. Ray and his youngest son, Brant were baptized together.
Ray retired to the Hill Country that he loved so much in June, 1998, and lived out his life in Buchanan Dam, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Madge Gillis, and his daughter, Donna Mills.
Ray is survived by his former wife and faithful care-giver, Jolene, his sons Vince (Kim) of Colleyville, Texas, Wade (Michelle) of Odessa, Texas, Brant (Shurine) of Kingsland, Texas, two brothers, Jack Hawkins of Lubbock, Texas, Jim (Joyce) Hawkins of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, one sister Frankie Jo (James) May of Palmyra, Virginia, 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were conducted at Lakeland Hills Memorial Park at 2 p.m. on Feb. 8, 2007, with Doug Lindley, officiating.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Putnam Funeral Chapel, Kingsland, Texas.
Billie Don Brogden
Odessa - Billie Don Brogden, 80, of Odessa, passed away Monday, February 12, 2007, at Medical Center Hospital. He was born January 29, 1927 in Seymour, TX. He married
Peggy Hinman November 20, 1953, in Reno, NV. He served in the Merchant Marines and the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked for Yellow Jacket Tools for 20 years and later for Cagle Fishing Tool for 20 years.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Alton and Pearl Brogden, and his brother, Mike.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy Brogden of Odessa, son, Scott S. Brogden of Atlanta, GA, brother, Geary Brogden of Atlanta, GA, sisters, Cora Ellen Rogers and Jean Price both of Albuquerque, NM, (3) grandchildren, Heather, Jennifer and Caleb.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, February 15, 2007, at Hubbard-Kelly Chapel with Richard Webster officiating.

Christine ‘Christina’ Heredia
Odessa - Christine “Christina” Heredia, 64, of Odessa, passed away February 9, 2007, at Odessa Regional Hospital. She was born January 27, 1943, in Big Spring, TX, to parents Frank Mendoza and Louisa Santiago.
Mrs. Heredia was a barber and owner of Jaime’s Barber Shop. She was a Catholic.
She is survived by her special friend of 12 years, Saul R. Carrillo of Odessa, daughter, Jaime Lynn Hernandez and husband Gabriel of Odessa, brothers, Frank Mendoza, David Mendoza, Richard Mendoza and Robert Mendoza, all of Midland, TX, Raymond Mendoza of Oregon and Albert Mendoza of Tulsa, OK, sisters, Elvira Hammond of Owego, NY, and Louisa Navarette of Midland, TX, three grandchildren, John A. Chavez, Jasmine Johnson and Jackie Johnson Jr., all of Odessa, TX. The family would like to thank everyone who donated towards her medical and funeral expenses, God bless you all.
Visitation for Mrs. Heredia were held Tuesday, February 13, 2007, from 9 A.M. to 10 P.M. with a rosary being said at 7 P.M. at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 14, 2007, at 10 A.M. at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father Joe Uecker officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Martinez-Smith Funeral Chapels and Crematory.
Johnnie F. Roper
Odessa - Johnnie Fletcher Roper, 90, of Odessa, passed away Monday, February 12, 2007, in Midland. He was born May 14, 1916 in Clay County, TX to Jessie and Mattie Roper.
He married
Lera Fay Horn June 29, 1938 in Shannon, TX.
Johnnie began his oilfield career in North Texas working with his brothers on the drilling rigs. He worked extensively throughout West Texas, and Eastern New Mexico, even spending some time in the Rockies as a division Manager for TMBR DRLG. He was affectionately known by his peers as “Mule” and spent many wonderful days enjoying the company of his friends and family “in the field.” He loved many and was loved by many. He was fortunate to spend the last few years at Country Acres under the constant loving care of Larry and Diane Mitchell, reminiscing with Larry and spinning wonderful yarns of his family and friends in the field. He was always handy with a joke or phrase to lift your spirits and lighten your day.
He was a member of Mission Dorado Baptist Church.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Jessie and Mattie Roper, his loving wife of 61 years, Lera, his brothers, Hiram Roper, Hester Roper, Reuben Roper, Tyra Roper, Bill Roper and Joe Roper, and his sisters, Mary Davis and Iris Wilson.
“I have gone to a place prepared for me by my heavenly father. I have gone to see my loving wife and family. Someday I hope to see you too in paradise.”
Survivors are son, Eddie Joe Roper and wife Patsy; daughter, Gaydene Hickey; sisters, Clarice Scarber, Patsy Johnson, Imagene Heck, and Kathrine Spivey; grandchildren, Amber Roper, Aaron Roper, Angela Schlegel and husband, Bennie, Travis Hickey and wife Gail; and great grandchildren; Trey Schlegel, Camryn Schlegel and Logan Schlegel. His caregivers, Larry and Diane Mitchell and much extended family also survive him.
Pallbearers will be Aaron Roper, Benny Schlegel, Mark Durhan, Bruce Seawright, Travis Hickey, Trey Schlegel and Camryn Schlegel.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, February 14, 2007, at Mission Dorado Baptist Church with Rev. Bob Bratcher officiating. Burial will be at Crestview cemetery in Wichita Falls, Friday at 4 p.m.

HOBBS, N.M. - Aubrey E. Kenyon, 73, of Midland, died Friday, Feb. 9, 2007, in Midland.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Jefferson Street Church of Christ in Hobbs, N.M., with John Snider officiating. Burial will follow in the Prairie Haven Memorial Park in Hobbs. Arrangements are by Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory in Midland.

ODESSA - Dr. Ashok Khosla, 61, of Lahore, India, a professor of Physics at Odessa College, died Saturday, Feb. 10, 2007, in Odessa.
Services will be at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at the Odessa College Community Room. Arrangements are by Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory in Midland.
He was born in Lahore, India.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. today at Rose Hill Babyland with the Rev. R.T. McNeil officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Babyland. Arrangements are by Martinez-Smith Chapel and Crematory.
He was born in Odessa.

ODESSA - R.E. “Bob” Thee, 79, of Odessa, died Friday, Feb. 9, 2007, at Sienna Nursing Center.

He was born in Los Angeles, Calif., and was a World War II veteran for the U.S. Army.
