Orvil A. ‘Bob’ Brookshire
ODESSA - Orvil A. “Bob” Brookshire passed away on Saturday, May 20, at the Hospice House in Odessa, Texas. Bob served as a law enforcement officer for 45 years. His service included 16 years as Ector County Sheriff.
Born the son of an East Texas sharecropper on July 28, 1926, Bob grew to manhood on a farm outside the tiny village of Avery, Texas during the hardest years of the Great Depression. As Bob would often say, “I spent the first sixteen years of my life looking at the back end of a mule,” cultivating the soil of east Texas. With the outbreak of Word War II Bob began trying to persuade his mother to let him enlist—and finally succeeded in 1944, joining the US Navy and serving in the Pacific theater where he saw action as an anti-aircraft gunner on an ammunition ship, one of the most dangerous assignments in the Navy.
Returning from the war as a 19-year-old veteran, Bob finished high school and joined the Texas Department of Public safety as a Highway patrolman in 1948. While assigned as a patrolman in San Angelo Bob met and married
Nell in 1949. After assignments in Hereford and Amarillo, Bob was promoted to Patrol Sergeant for the Odessa Department of Public Safety, where he served with distinction until his retirement in 1996.
Bob loved to barbecue, and following his retirement from the Highway Patrol, he fulfilled a lifelong dream opening “Sarge’s Smoke House,” a popular barbecue restaurant in Odessa. Following his success in the restaurant business, Bob ran for Ector County Sheriff in 1980. The first Republican to win county wide office since Reconstruction, Bob won more votes in Ector County than Ronald Reagan, who led the Republican ticket that year. A born campaigner, Bob never met a stranger and his family knew that if they went out with him for a meal, the food would be cold by the time Bob had made his way throughout the restaurant, meeting and greeting all his many friends and supporters.
While serving as Ector County Sheriff, Bob was honored by his contemporaries, who elected him President of the Texas Sheriff’s Association in 1992 and 1993. Bob was also recognized by the Fraternal Order of Eagles with a “Reverence for Law” award. He was a devoted member of Crescent Park Church of Christ for 45 years.
Nell, his late wife, passed away in 1998 after a long battle with cancer, leaving behind Bob, their three daughters and two sons-in-law, Sheila and Steve Groh, Raylene and Jim Fealy and Bobbie Bright; five grandchildren, Jesse and Elizabeth Groh, Lauren Falcone, Trevor Heaney and Cole Bright; and great grandson, Grant Falcone, born January 20, 2006. Bob married
Mary Ann Knight on October 20, 2002, and shared with her four of the happiest years of his life. Their marriage added a son, Kenneth W. Howell; a daughter, Helen Kashiwa, and her husband, Shinji; and five more grandchildren, Alyssa, Patrick, Kaylie, Mitchel and Akane Kashiwa, to his extended family. Survivors also include a brother, Jimmy Dale Brookshire, and sister-in-law, Erma, of Avery, Texas; and a sister, Emma Jean Brookshire, of New Boston, Texas.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday, May 22, at Crescent Park Church of Christ, located at 1415 Royalty in Odessa. Services have been entrusted to Frank W. Wilson Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be given to Hospice House in Odessa, Texas.

Marjorie Sue McLelland
SHREVEPORT, La. - Our sweet mother, Marjorie Sue McLelland, went to live in the house of the Lord on Saturday, May 20, 2006 where she now is reunited with our daddy, her husband of 59 years, Sam V. McLelland. A woman whose deep faith was demonstrated through her gentle spirit and loving heart, she gave of herself freely for her family and her many friends her whole life.
Visitation will take place on Thursday, May 25 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at Rose-Neath Funeral Home, Marshall Street, Shreveport, LA. A Funeral Mass will take place on Friday, May 26 at 11:00 am at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, Shreveport, with her son, Rev. James McLelland, presiding. A Memorial Service will
also take place at Live Oak Retirement Community, Shreveport on Sunday, May 28 at 2:00 pm.
Born a Christmas baby on December 25, 1915 in Plainville, Indiana to R. Elmer Killion and Susan Almira Sims (Alma), Marjorie moved south with her family and eventually settled in Plainview, Texas where she graduated from high school. The family then moved to Denton, Texas so Marjorie could attend Texas Women’s University, graduating in 1935 with a BS degree in music education and a piano concentration. Marjorie was a public school music teacher who spent most of her career in Odessa, Texas.
Marjorie met Sam at a USO dance in Odessa, and the couple was married
June 5, 1943. To this union were born three children, Sammie Gayle, James and Sue Lynn. Marjorie and Sam lived their whole life in Odessa, Texas until failing health made it necessary for them to leave their home and many friends in September of 1998 and move to Shreveport, Louisiana to be close to their son, James, and his family. In Shreveport they settled at Live Oak Retirement Community where they made new friends and involved themselves in many activities. They loved visits from their three children and their families, five grandchildren and two other special “adopted” grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.
Sam died on April 15, 2003 after a long fight with cancer. Sam and Marjorie were very close to each other in the bonds of love and had often dreamed of walking hand in hand into eternity together. Though we miss her dearly, Marjorie is now reunited with her loving husband and with her parents.
We deeply appreciate the gentle loving care our parents received from their faithful sitters, and especially from Chris Nicholson who helped and supported them over seven years. Chris and her relief sitter, Rosita Thomas, have become members of our family through their love of our parents. We are also grateful to Live Oak Retirement Community that enriched our parents’ lives in so many ways and to the ER and ICU personnel at Christus Schumpert Hospital who lovingly cared for our mother in her final days.
Memorials may be made to Live Oak Retirement Community, 600 E. Flournoy Lucas Rd., Shreveport, LA 71115.
Marjorie has gone to be with her Lord, Jesus Christ. I love you, Mama. I miss you. You’re a mighty fine Mama! We will see you again soon! —-James
