Delbert Lyle Hemphill

Odessa - Delbert Lyle Hemphill 85, of Midland passed away May 31, 2006 at the Lamun Lusk Sanchez State Veterans Home in Big Spring.
Graveside services will be 11:00 AM Monday at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Odessa with Pastor M.R. Thomason officiating. Visitation will be Sunday 6 – 8:00 pm at the funeral home.
Delbert was born December 17, 1920 in Tryon, Oklahoma to Charlie and Hazel (Turner) Hemphill. He married Phyllis De Armond on November 8, 1941 in Shawnee Oklahoma. He served in the US Army receiving the Purple Heart Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, American Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. He retired from NL Acme Tool in Sonora where he was shop foreman. He was a longtime member of the Church of God.
He is survived by his wife Phyllis Hemphill of Midland; son Gene L. Hemphill of Odessa; daughter Cheryl Coursey of Midland; sister Lilly Wall of Shawnee, OK; grandchildren Tama Hobbs, Heather Massey, Wesley Hemphill, Cody Hemphill and great grandchildren Taryn Hobbs, Taylor Hobbs and Robby Massey, and numerous nieces and nephews
In lieu of flowers the family has requested memorials be made to Diabetes Association or Parkinson Research. The family would like to thank everyone associated with the Lamun Lusk Sanchez State Veterans Home in Big Spring.

Max Burnett Lloyd

Midland - Max Burnett Lloyd, better known as radio broadcaster “Max Howard,” was born May 14, 1940, in Ada, Oklahoma, to Max Howard Lloyd and Margarette Burnett Furner. He was a member of the Chickasaw Indian Nation.
Max attended Odessa High School, Odessa College and East Central State Teachers College (Ada, Oklahoma). He worked in the circulation department of the Odessa American for several years before going into broadcasting in 1961. Max worked for KRIG prior to helping create KNFM, the first FM stereo station in West Texas. He was sales manager and part owner of KNFM, later KNFM-KNAM, until 1980 when the station was sold. At KNFM, Max appeared on “Breakfast a la Carte,” a morning show where he teamed with Mike McLaren as “Mike on the Left, Max on the Right” in stereo. He also worked with McLaren to create award-winning musical specials on jazz and Big Band history. Max also served as marketing director for Western State Bank and held other sales and on-air positions prior to his retirement. His signature sign-off to all his broadcasts was “Music is my business.” Max was an active volunteer for West Texas Jazz Society, Midland Community Theatre and Maverick Players. He was a proud fan of Star Trek.
He was preceded in death by his parents. His survivors include two half brothers, Jeff Lloyd of Oklahoma City, and Greg Lloyd of Paul’s Valley, Oklahoma, and two half sisters, Kim Lloyd of Oklahoma City and Pam Lloyd of Florida. He is also survived by several cousins.
No formal funeral service is planned. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Although no pallbearers will be needed, Max wanted Captain James T. Kirk designated as an honorary pallbearer. Margarette Elizabeth Tucker Jacobs

Odessa - Margarette Elizabeth Tucker Jacobs was born June 26, 1917 in Quitman, Texas. to Benjamin Joseph and Velah Elizabeth Goldsmith Tucker. She was the middle child of two older sisters and two younger brothers. She completed high school at Fluvannah, Texas and worked her way through Hardin Simmons University, graduating in 1940 with a degree in English. Mrs. Jacobs began her long teaching career in Buena Vista, Texas.
On July 29, 1944 Margarette Tucker married Howard Rhea Jacobs in Balmorhea, Texas. They moved to Odessa, where she began teaching at Crockett Junior High. In 1959 Mrs. Jacobs transferred to Bonham Junior High where she completed a 44 year teaching career. During this career she impacted the lives of many students, teaching them respect and to be proud as well as to improve language skills.
After her children were raised, Mrs. Jacobs studied watercolor painting, attending many classes and retreats, developing painting friends along with works of art. At the same time she devoted more attention to writing short stories and poems . She leaves us books illustrated and written for her grandchildren as well as a collection of writings. She explained why she wrote, “Most of my writing is based on events in my life. I want my children and grandchildren to have an understanding of my life as a child and historical events that affected my life.”
Mrs. Jacobs was a member of Delta Iota Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma; past president of Delta Iota; lifetime member of Texas State Teachers Association; Texas Retired Teachers Association; First Baptist Church of Odessa since 1944; Naomi Sunday School Class; Snappy Stitchers Crochet Group; past president of Ector County Sheriff’s Posse Ladies Auxiliary; Old Timers of Ector County; and Permian Basin Radio Society.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Howard; and parents, Benjamin and Velah Tucker; brothers, J. C. Tucker and Bill Tucker; and sisters, Maybelle Ainsworth and Jenelle Nanny. She is survived by daughters and their husbands, Dianna & Albert Janke of Kennewick, WA and Karen & Richard Mayo of Odessa; grandchildren Jacob Mayo & wife Lindsey of Odessa, Ethan Janke & wife Rene’ of Burbank, WA, Jennifer Wangler & husband Tim of Nampa, ID, Sheila Sullivan & husband Daniel of Odessa; and one great-grandson, Cooper Rhea Sullivan of Odessa; and special nieces, Kayloma, Kathy, & Karry Yancy of Odessa. Mrs. Jacobs is also survived by sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Nation of Abilene and Valjean Manning of Ft. Worth; and several nieces & nephews.
The family invites you to share in celebration of Mrs. Jacobs’ life at a graveside service at 9:30 A.M. Monday, June 5, 2006 at Sunset Memorial Gardens. A memorial service is scheduled for 10:30 A.M. at First Baptist Church of Odessa with Reverend Johnny Young officiating. A visitation with family will be held on Sunday, June 4 from 3:00 to 5:00 P.M. at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
The family suggests memorials be given to First Baptist Church of Odessa, Alzheimer’s Association, Arthritis Foundation, or a charity of your choice.

Nonis L. Dobkins Rogers

Monahans - Nonis L. Dobkins Rogers, 96, of Monahans, died June 1, 2006 at the Monahans Managed Care Center.
Services are scheduled for Monday, June 5, 2006 at 2 p.m. at the Monahans Memorial cemetery with Reverend Owen Sharp officiating. Services are under the direction of Harkey Family Funeral Services.
Mrs. Rogers was born May 24, 1910 in Grandfalls, Texas, to two pioneering families of this area. Her father was R. M. “Mac” Reed of Coyanoso, Texas and her mother was Blanche A. Brown of Grandfalls. Mrs.Rogers was co-owner of Howard’s Bakery for a number of years in Monahans.
She is survived by two sons, Charles M. Dobkins, Jr. and wife, Eyvon of Monahans, James Dobkins of Snyder, Texas, one granddaughter, Charlene Diez and husband Tommy of Monahans, two great-granddaughters, Renea Lange and husband Keith of Corpus Christi, Texas, Kawyn Diez of Monahans and one great-great grandson, Nathanel Diez of Monahans, one brother, Richard M. “Bud” Reed and wife, Odessa, of San Angelo, and one cousin, Jean Gilbert of Ruidoso, New Mexico.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Charlie M. “Shorty” Dobkins, second husband, Ted M. Rogers, and two sons, William “Bill” Dobkins and Richard M. Dobkins.

John Warren Fuller

Odessa - John Warren Fuller, 73, passed away Monday, June 5, 2006 at Hospice House in Odessa
Funeral services will be 2:00 pm Wednesday at Temple Baptist Church in the Harvester Class. Burial will follow in McCamey.
John was born in Iraan, Texas on September 15, 1932 to John and Ardell (Torbet) Fuller. He married Vera Stone in Fresno California on August 16, 1951. John served his country in the U.S. Army. He had been a regional manager for Wilson Supply.
He is survived by his wife Vera Fuller of Odessa; son Ted Warren Fuller and wife Debbie of Hobbs; daughter Ellen Marie Trent and husband Billy of Crane; three grandchildren Angelina Dukes, James Fuller, Emily Susan Holcomb; six great grandchildren Katie, Eric and Justin Dukes, Payton and Mackenzie Holcomb and Serenity Wright.
Services entrusted to Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors.

Vona Lee Heiting

Midland - Vona Lee Heiting, of Midland, passed away Friday, June 2, 2006.
She was born November 26, 1951 to Ray Alford McMullin and Alves Eloise Davis McMullin in Nacona, Texas. She was a graduate of Andrews High School and Odessa College. Vona also graduated from UTPB. She was the past president of Phi Theta Kappa and was a member of the Texas State Teacher’s Association. On May 25, 1996, Vona married Dr. Tom Heiting. At the time of her death, she was a teacher at Abell Jr. High where she was chair of the English Department. Other memberships included the American Poetry Society and the Literary Society.
Vona is survived by her husband, Dr. Tom Heiting of Midland, TX; son, Shane Underwood of Hurst, TX; daughter, Clair R. Underwood of Lubbock, TX; mother, Eloise Nielson of Riverside, CA; step-son, Tom E. Heiting of Midland, TX; step-daughter, Lynn M. Heiting, of Odessa, TX; grandmother, Gussie Lee Davis of Leesville, LA; brothers, Dale Reeves of Harrison, AK; and Art Reeves of El Paso, TX; sisters, Elaine Reeves of San Antonio, TX; and Kathy Taylor of Enid, OK; grandchildren, Caden, Kaylee Joe, and Landon Underwood, Paxton and Payton Heiting.
A rosary will be held at 7:00 P.M. Tuesday, June 6, 2006 at Ellis Funeral Home.
Funeral services have been scheduled for 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, June 7, 2006 at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Art Reeves, Shane Underwood, George Friesen, Dr. Tony Heiting, Dr. Steve Heiting and Jim Gillham. Arrangements are under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home.

Antonio Herrera

Odessa - Antonio Herrera 76 of Odessa passed away June 3, 2006 at Parks Methodist. He was born June 13, 1929 in Rio Hondo, Texas to parents Librado Herrera and Teodora Rodriguez. He was a welder and a Catholic. He is survived by his wife, Olivia Gonzalez Herrera of Odessa, sons, Raul Herrera, Ruben Herrera, and Rodolfo Herrera all of Odessa, daughters, Raquel Aguilar and Antonia Martinez both of Odessa, brothers, Librado Herrera of Grand Prairie, TX, Jose Herrera of Brush, Colorado, Rufino Herrera of Houston, TX, and Jesus Herrera of San Benito, TX, sisters, Teodora Herrera of Houston, TX, Guadalupe Betancourt and Maria Rodriguez of Rio Hondo, TX, 12 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Visitation will be held today from 9am to 10 pm at Martinez-Smith Funeral Chapels & Crematory with a rosary being said at 7 pm. Funeral Services will be held Wed. June 7, 2006 at 10 am at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Fr. Joe Uecker officiating with burial following at Rose Hill cemetery. Services are under the direction of Martinez-Smith Funeral Chapels & Crematory.

Marlene Joyce Broyles Miller

Odessa - Marlene Joyce Broyles Miller, age 69, passed away June 4th, 2006 at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa, Texas.
Marlene was born April 24th, 1937 to Albert Emmanuel Broyles and Mabel Viola Hunter in Yakima, WA, and was reared and educated in Sidney, NE, and spent a number of years in Salt Lake City, UT. She worked numerous years in the food service industry at Bratten’s Seafood Grotto and also worked at Zion’s.
Marlene was a fun loving free spirit. She was always “ready to go” and when she got there, she always had a good time. She loved country music, dancing, reading and crocheting.
Ms. Miller is preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Mabel Broyles and brother, LaVerne Broyles.
Marlene is survived by her companion Earl Breeding of Odessa; son, Mathew Miller of Grand Junction CO; daughter, Misty Breeding of Salt Lake City, UT; sister, Donna Linnell of Riverton, WY, five grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
There are no services scheduled at this time.

Yvonne Peevy

Yvonne Peevy, age 83 of Odessa, passed away on June 4, 2006 at the Hospice House in Odessa.
Services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 6, 2006 at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel with Emmett Barnard officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Yvonne was born on July 17, 1922 in Bridgeport, TX to Dallas and Gertrude Stoneking. She was the Salutatorian of Bridgeport High School. She came to Odessa in 1941. She married Henry Peevy on April 30, 1942 in Odessa. He passed away in 1985. Yvonne was an avid football fan of the Dallas Cowboys and the Permian Panthers.
Survivors include her son, Gary Peevy and wife Nancy of Rogers, Ark.; daughters, George Ann Ackal and Jo Beth Hamby & her husband David all of Odessa; a brother, Elton Stoneking of Eufaula, OK; (6) grandchildren, and (5) great grandchildren.
Family requests donations to American Cancer Society or Home Hospice.

James Marion White III

Odessa - Jim or Jimmy as most people called him, passed away at the age of 59 on June 3rd, 2006 at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa, Texas.
Jim was born on October 10th, 1946 in Odessa to James M. White Jr. and Mildred Neal White.
Jim fought a long battle before he passed, but we thank God his pain is over.
Mr. White retired from AMOCO after 32 years of dedicated service. He loved his family and friends but also liked golf, hunting, fishing and travel.
Jim was preceded in death by his mother, and is survived by his dad; his sister, Lana Vaughn and his three children Allison, Colette and Jamie and 6 grandchildren all of Odessa.
Following cremation the family will honor him with a private memorial service.
Arrangements are entrusted to Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.
