Eva Lea Swope
Temple - Eva Lea Swope died on February 18, 2006, only 9 days shy of her 102nd birthday. She was born in Killeen, Texas, on February 27, 1904, to John Hardy and Luveney Sprott Swope. She was preceded in death by her three younger siblings, Mittie Swope Allen, Eunice Swope Huff, and Charles Hardy Swope. Surviving her are numerous nephews and nieces among many generations.
Lea graduated from Killeen High School and obtained a teaching certificate in 1922. She attended Baylor College, Baylor University and Texas Tech University, where she received her Bachelor of Science degree. Later she did graduate work at the University of Texas in Library Science. She was a member of Retired Teachers of Texas, Daughters of the American Revolution, and American Association of University Women.
She taught in the following school districts from 1922 - 1968: Iduma, Little Nolan, Killeen, Colorado City, and Odessa. Her personality characteristics were evident in her classroom atmosphere – dignity, respect, independence, and self-discipline. Her former students credit her for a good part of their success in life that resulted from just one year in her classroom. In recent years these students would write her letters of appreciation and take her to lunch. Even up to her death, family members would receive inquiries about her health from the students.
Her personal tastes were admirable. A visit to any one of her residences was a treat of good tastes in furnishings, art pieces, and collectibles. She dressed impeccably in keeping with her taste for items of great quality. Her students remembered this as it added to the atmosphere of attention to proper manners and to their serious approach to class subject matters. As her life matured, she generously gave her personal belongings to eager, receptive, and thankful family members. Her memory will live for years in many homes.
Her 100th birthday party at Merrill Gardens in Round Rock was a gala affair of family, students and friends of many years. She received over 100 birthday cards from students in Odessa.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 22, 2006, at 2:30 p.m. at the Sheffield Funeral Home in Temple followed by a funeral service at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to World Bible School, Boles Children’s Home, Herald of Truth, or World Radio.
