Yolanda Herrera
Odessa - Yolanda was born on April 24, 1948, and entered into rest on January 31, 2006.
Yolanda was born in Sanderson, TX, and moved to Odessa around 1950. She attended Ector High School and went on to Odessa College, and then to the University of the Permian Basin.
Yolanda was married
to Jesus Herrera for 30 wonderful years. Yolanda worked for the State of Texas for approximately 23 years and at the Odessa American for 9 years. She and her husband owned an arcade called JES Company in which she named after her three children, Jay, Efren, and Shelline.
Yolanda was a compassionate mother, devoted wife, beautiful daughter, a one of a kind sister, and a loving aunt.
Yolanda was well known, loved, and respected by all who knew her for many reasons. Her colleagues admired her because of the way she could make them feel better with one of her warm hugs when they were having a bad day. The caretakers and office staff at the cemetery also looked forward to her visits when she came to see Jay. They will never forget that she showed her gratitude to them for taking such good care of Jay’s resting place. She did this by bringing them treats and drinks.
Most importantly Yolanda was and always will be cherished by her family. We all knew that we could count on her for love, support, fun, and honesty. For these reasons and many others, we have experienced a great loss.
Yolanda was also known for her fabulous cooking. This talent allowed her to be a food critic (a service she provided free of charge). Yolanda was kind, but straightforward. You always knew where you stood with her and she expected the same courtesy from you in return. She was funny with a contagious laugh. You did not have to know what she was laughing about in order to laugh with her. Her whole face lit up with joy when she was with those she loved. Our loss is Heaven’s gain.
Finally, in her own words, “I helped bring home the bacon, fry it up in a pan, ‘cause I’m a woman.”
She is preceded in death by her son, Jay Herrera.
She is survived by her husband, Jesus Herrera of Odessa, son, Efren Chavez of Dallas, daughter, Shelline Stokes and husband Randy of Phoenix, AZ, mother, Cecilia Franco, brothers, Rodolfo Sanchez and wife Dolores of Odessa, Jimmy Sanchez and wife Donna of San Angelo, Danny Sanchez of San Angelo, sister, Carla Leyva of San Antonio and four grandchildren.
