Maxine Harmon Ward
MONAHANS - Maxine Harmon Ward, age 82, of Monahans passed away Saturday, January 7, 2006 at Covenant Hospital in Lubbock, Texas.
She was born May 27, 1923, in Magnolia, Arkansas to Murray and Mae Jones Harmon. She married
Ted G. Ward Jr. on December 27, 1942 at her parents’ home near Magnolia, Arkansas.
Her survivors are her husband, Ted G. Ward Jr. of Monahans, Texas; her son, Ted G. Ward III and his wife, Carolyn, of McKinney, Texas; her brother, Wilbur Harmon and his wife, Sara Sue of Palos Verdes Estates, California; two grandsons, Joel Ward of Providence Village, Texas, and Tim Ward of McKinney, Texas, and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Michael H. Ward.
In addition to being a homemaker, she was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Monahans for fifty-three years. She taught Sunday School and worked in various capacities in the Women’s Organization. She was a member of the Eastern Star, a fifty-year member of the Beauceant organization, a member of Wednesday Study Club, and an honorary life member of PTA. She served the Cub Scouts as a den mother as her sons were growing up. She volunteered to deliver Meals on Wheels for twenty-five years. She was always available to volunteer her services for many worthy causes in Monahans.
Services for Maxine Ward are scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday, January 11, 2006, at First United Methodist Church with Reverend Bill Sylskar officiating. Burial will follow in the Monahans Memorial cemetery under the direction of Martinez-Smith &; Miller Funeral Chapel.
Peggy Wilson English
Odessa - Peggy Wilson English, age 71 of Odessa, passed away January 6, 2006 at Midland Memorial Hospital in Midland TX. Graveside services will be at 2:00 PM Thursday, January 12, 2006.
She had retired from Snyder High School, where she had taught for several years. Some of the activities she was involved in include the following; she was a candy striper at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa, she was a member of the Juliet Society, she was a Red Hat Lady, and she was also a member of the OHS ‘52ers.
Peggy moved to Odessa from White Oak, TX in 1949. She then moved to Snyder, TX where she taught school from 1971-1996. After retiring from school teaching, she returned to Odessa in 1996.
Survivors include: 3 sons, Willie English of Odessa, Joe English of Denver City, and David English of Snyder; 1 daughter, Bonnie Dodson of Roswell NM; 10 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren
She was preceded in death by: her parents Walt and Dot Wilson, and three brothers, Jim, George, and Gordon Wilson.

Jessie Calvin McCulley
EASTLAND - Jessie Calvin McCulley, 85, of Eastland passed away on Saturday January 7, 2006 at a local hospital.
Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Edwards Funeral Home Chapel in Eastland, with Dr. T. Shawn Brewer officiating.
Burial will be in Eastland City cemetery under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home in Eastland, Texas.
Mr. McCulley was born on May 21, 1920 in Gorman, Texas to Clayborn “Clay” and Ida L. Capers McCulley. He met and married
Lorene Hodges on December 29, 1941 in Comanche, Texas.
Mr. McCulley served in the United States Army in the infantry as a tech sergeant during WWII. After his discharge they moved to Goldsmith Tx and Odessa where he played semi-pro baseball and later worked for El Paso Natural Gas starting in the yard and progressed through the ranks and retired in 1982 as a shift foreman. They moved to Eastland in 1980. He was a member of the Odessa Temple Baptist Church in Odessa and currently a member of First Baptist in Eastland. He was involved in his son’s sports activities including coaching Little League Baseball, a Boy Scout Leader and he enjoyed woodworking and fishing and was a mentor to many children and young adults.
Mr. McCulley is survived by his wife of 64 years Lorene McCulley of Eastland, sons Timothy McCulley of Cordell Ok. and Jessie D. McCulley of La Porte Tx. 4 Grandchildren and 8 Great Grandchildren. Sisters Bonnie Overstreet of Petersburg, Tx, Elizabeth Bingham of Gorman, Tx and Fay Perrin of Sundown, Tx.
Howard Mott Phillips
2-23-23 – 1-6-06
Gainesville - Howard Phillips was born on 2-23-23 in Lubbock, TX. He was a graduate of Lubbock High School and of Texas Tech University, with a degree in Chemistry. At Tech, he belonged to the KAMAS Club, which became Phi Gamma Delta.
Mr. Phillips served in the U.S. Naval Air Corp and U.S. Navy between 1942 and 1946. He was Honorably Discharged from the U.S. Naval Reserve in 1954 as Lieutenant JG.
Mr. Phillips retired from Dow Chemical Company in 1982. During his time with Dowel Oil Field Services (a division of Dow Chemical), he was recognized within the oil industry as co-creator of a new, safer well service treatment resulting in his receiving the National Inventor’s Recognition in 1982. While with the overseas operation of Dowel, he and his wife Nora, lived in Paris, France and traveled extensively worldwide. He was a member of The American Legion, Post #1 in Paris, France.
Mr. Phillips was a lifetime member of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) wherever he lived. He served the church in various capacities, including as Deacon and as a choir member for over 60 years.
Mr Phillips was artistic and creative with a quick wit. He was happiest when he was entertaining a host of family and friends with his numerous travel adventures.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey Dow and Harriet Elizabeth Mott Phillips and three brothers, Claurice, Tommy and HD. He is survived by his wife, Nora Phillips of Lake Kiowa; daughters and son-in-laws, Sylvia and Don Cave of Lake Kiowa, Susan Phillips and Ransom Reynold of Santa Fe and Gay Phillips and Sue Barton of Tulsa. He is also survived by several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
There will be a memorial service at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 10, 2006, at First Christian Church in Gainesville, Texas with the Rev. Mark Loewen officiating. The family will receive friends at the First Christian Church immediately following the memorial service.

Martha Turpen
MIDLAND - Martha Jane Turpen of Midland passed away after a short illness on January 4, 2006, surrounded by her family.
A viewing will be held on Wednesday, January 11 from 6-8 p.m. at the Nalley Pickle and Welch Funeral Home in Midland.
The funeral will be held on Thursday, January 12 at 2 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chapel on 2101 Tarleton St. in Midland.
Internment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Odessa.
Martha was born in Jacksonville, Texas on October 21, 1940 to David Hoover and Mary Chitwood. She lived in Odessa, Texas for 27 year and Midland, Texas for 13 years. Martha attended Texas Tech University at the age of 19 where she met her future husband, Ben Turpen. They were married
a year and a half later on October 12, 1961. They began their life together in Borger, Texas, where they lived for four years before moving to Odessa and later to Midland.
Martha was a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother and was always helping and serving those in need. She had many friends and family members who loved her very much. She served others in many capacities throughout her life. Martha was a volunteer Scouter with the Boy Scouts of America and helped with many activities and functions for over twenty years. She was a member of the first women’s Scout Woodbadge patrol in West Texas. She enjoyed working and serving in her church, and she spent countless hours with the children, women, teens and in other organizations in the church. She was always ready and willing to give her time and energy whenever it was needed.
In 1989 she went back to Texas Tech University for a year to complete her hours for a bachelor’s degree in Education. She was a reading specialist and taught at Goliad Elementary in Odessa for a year. She then tutored children in her home for a short time.
Martha loved spending time and sharing her love with her grandchildren. She was loved by many and will be dearly missed. Martha was preceded in death by three children, David, Mary, and an infant daughter, and by one granddaughter, Rachel Wilson.
Martha is survived by her husband, Ben L. Turpen of the family home; one brother, David Hoover of Provo, UT; two sisters, Isla Howard of Scottsdale, AZ and Helen Brown of Sedona, AZ; four children, Carolyn Wilson and Evelyn (Lauren) Hendrix of Gilbert, AZ; Laura (Wesley) Miller of Pleasant Grove, UT, and Eric Turpen of Odessa, TX, and eleven grandchildren.

Jane E. Warren
Dallas - Born March 4, 1936 in Ft. Deposit, Alabama and went home to be with her Lord on Sunday morning, January 8, 2006 in Dallas, Texas. She was a graduate of Lowndes Co. High School 1954, Judson College 1958 and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary MRE 1960.
Mrs. Jane was the epitome of southern hospitality. She loved to cook, loved her family, loved to teach, loved her church and she loved the Lord. All those who knew her well speak fondly of how she made them feel at home and at ease in being who God created them to be. Her boundless joy and zest for a life in Christ made her dynamite soul a blessing to behold. She was a writer of Baptist curriculum and taught in Associational, State, and National training seminars. She loved to teach the Bible and encouraged others to view Scripture from the depths of a profound love and a sense of quiet elegance that made others want to know more about Jesus and His love. She was married
to Rev. Melvin L. Warren of Enid, Oklahoma on September 4, 1960 spending 45 plus happy years together.
She is preceded in death by one brother, John Ellis of Ft. Deposit, Alabama and parents Hense R. & Ellen H. Ellis of Ft. Deposit, Alabama.
Each member of her family celebrates her life including her husband, one brother, her children, their spouses and an adorable grandchild, as well as a host of other loving family members and friends. We have been blessed. She may have been small, but she was mighty in Spirit. We love you, for we know we were loved by you.
Visitation will be open from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, January 10 at Sparkman-Crane Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at Lakeside Baptist Church on Wednesday, January 11, 2006 at 10 AM with Dr. Gary L. Hearon officiating. Graveside services will be held at Ft. John Landrum Willis
Odessa - John Landrum Willis passed from this life at home in Odessa, Texas on Sunday, January 8th, 2006. He died the way he lived, quietly, peacefully and surrounded with love. A man of integrity, loved by all, he will be greatly missed. He lived a full life for 90 years.
He was born September 22, 1915 in Nome, Texas to Fanny Kate Vanslow and William Willis. He had two brothers and two sisters, Mary Betty, Bill, Lucy and Rather. John grew up cotton farming in Texas and South Carolina. In 1942, he joined the Navy and in his travels met Betty Jane Millar in Seattle, Washington. After a tour in the South Pacific, he returned to Seattle and married
Betty in 1946. Upon returning to Texas, he worked for JJ Willis Trucking Company and later for McVean and Barlow Pipeline Construction Company for 30 years. John and Betty had two daughters, Patrician Jean, and Nancy Ann. John and Betty were married
38 years before she died in 1985. John later married
Doris Mattox Carter and gained two more daughters, Devonne Carter Tatum and Melinda Carter Carlson.
John was an avid sportsman, hunter, fisherman, and golfer. His community involvement included the Odessa Chuck Wagon Gang, Medical Center Hospital “Popcorn Man” Volunteer, Meals on Wheels and Church Greeter at Crescent Park Baptist Church. He was an active swimmer at Odessa College for many years.
For 65 years, he was an active member of the Odessa Masonic Lodge #955, Sam J. Helm Chapter #445, and Sam J. Helm Council #363. He was a fifty plus member in the El Paso Scottish Rite and the El Mida Shrine. In addition, he was a member of the Red Cross of Constantine, and the West Texas York Rite College #36.
Mr. Willis is survived by his devoted wife, Doris; his daughters, Patty, Devonne, Melinda, and Nancy, son-in-laws, Larry Tatum and Tim Carlson; grandchildren, Jim Tatum, Rebecca Tatum, Kenneth O’Meara, Brad Tatum, Kathleen Melton, Ellen O’Meara, Logan Carlson, as well as Christie Atkinson and Christopher Bowling. He is also survived by his dear brother Rather Willis and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins. He was always close to his cousins in the J.J. Willis family.
Services on Wednesday, January 11th, 2006 will include a private family burial, followed by a Memorial Service, Celebration of John’s life at Crescent Park Baptist Church at 2:00p.m., with family receiving friends immediately following the service. Arrangements are entrusted to Sunset Funeral Home.

Jereline Lasseter
Midland - Jereline Lasseter, 80, of Odessa, died on Saturday, February 11, 2006, at Hospice House in Odessa. There will be a family gathering on Sunday, February 12, 2006 at 2 pm, at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home Chapel of Midland.
Jereline was born on October 25, 1925 to Lee and Alma Christmas in Georgia. She married
O.M. “George” Lasseter on July 12, 1942 in Mississippi. She was a long time resident of Odessa. Jereline worked as a registered nurse at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa for 20 years, retiring in March 1988.
Survivors include loving husband of 63 years, O.M. “George” Lasseter; son, Randy Lasseter and wife Ginger of Odessa; daughters, Jan Argo and husband Claude of Covington, WA; Jill Greer and husband Terry of Henderson, TX; sister, Louise Ridley and husband Earl of Georgia; Brothers, Bobby Christmas and wife Nina of Florida, and Lloyd Christmas and wife Pearl of Midland; 19 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by 2 daughters, Sharon Mangum and Carol Lasseter.

Odessa - The Garza Families are proud to announce the Good Lord has taken Domingo Garza. Despite our sorrow we rejoice that his spirit and soul are in heaven. As a man, friend, husband, father and grandfather, he showed us love and in return was loved. Through his life, his affection was unending. Our family was consoled by the heartfelt memories of this man’s involvement in our lives. With his death our families and the world around us will mourn in the loss of a great man. We thank God for allowing Domingo Garza with his joyful presence, for having brought us such brightness and inspiration in our lives, as well as all the numerous smiles he put on our faces. He was a great provider and consoler. The love for his family and God was what brought him all the happiness he needed in life. His visits to our homes, and events, and all other times in-between will always be remembered. As we all know he rejoiced in seeing his sons and their families. The Garza Families feel regret, loss, and sadness in seeing you leave us so early in our lives. We know you still had so much more to give and teach us, even though you had taught us more than enough throughout our lives through your heart.Through our faith in God, we know that angels exist, as Domingo Garza was the guardian angel of all the Garza Families. He has always tried to instill in each and everyone of us what God had taught him which was to work hard, be knowledgeable, and most importantly never give up. You will be sorely missed not just by the Garza Families, but by many other friends and families who lives you touched throughout your life. Through his sons he has seven grand children-Danell Garza, Michael A. Garza Jr., D’Ann Garza, Anthony Garza, Devin Paul Garza, Ashley Garza, and Samantha Garza. Through his grandchildren he has two great children-Kelsee Hefner and Kloee Gallegos. A Rosary will be rectited of Friday at 7:00PM at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Mass will be celebrated on Saturday February 18, 2006 at 10:00AM at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with the Reverend Francis Njoku officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill cemetery. Pallbearers will be Miguel Garza, Rocky Garza, Erin Gallegos, Michael Garza Jr., Salvador Garza and Devon Garza.

Pecos - Luis T. Muniz died Wed. Feb. 15, 2006 at Hospice House in Odessa, Tx. (Due to lengthy illness/Parkinsons Disease). He was preceded in death by his parents Juan and Eduvijes Muniz; Brother Ricardo Muniz, and Sister Ester Mendoza. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Isabel M. Muniz, Sons, Ramon and Francis Muniz of Pecos, Tx., Manuel Muniz of Saragosa Tx; Jose Luis (Joe) and Herminia Muniz, and Martin and Delia Muniz of Odessa, Tx. Daughters: Ayda and Raymundo Nunez of Indio, Ca., Adelaida and Arturo Burciaga, America and Faustino Baeza, Ana and Saul Paredes, Amavilia and Rigo Gonzales, and Betsy and Omar Dominguez of Odessa, Tx.; Jesusita and Victor Mondragon of Balmorhea, Tx., and Alicia and Tommy Dominguez of Crane, Tx., 26 grand-children and 15 great grand-children. Memorial Service were held at Peaceful Garden Funeral home in Pecos, Tx. on Thursday, Feb. 16, 2006 at 7:00 p.m. Mass will be celebrated on Friday, Feb. 17, 2006 at 2 p.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Saragosa, Tx. Burial following at Saragosa Cemetary.
