Don Castleman

Hobbs, N.M. - Calvin Don Castleman, age 68, of Odessa, Texas passed away Saturday, January 28, 2006. Don was born July 30, 1937, in Menard, Texas to Calvin and Jo Castleman. He was a longtime resident of Hobbs since 1941. Don graduated from Hobbs High School in 1955 and he served in the U.S. Army for four years during the Vietnam conflict. Don worked in the dirt construction business his entire life. Most of those years, he was employed by New-Mex Construction from 1956-1988. During the last several years, Don worked for a couple of different companies and took partnership in one. He retired shortly after moving to Gardendale, Texas in 1994. After living the farm life with land and animals to care for, Don and his wife, Bes moved into Odessa in 2002. He recently went back to work for Big D Equipment out of Midland and was employed there at the time of his death.
Don was preceded in death by his sister, Barbara, and his father, Calvin.
He leaves behind his loving wife and partner, Bes. A daughter, Sherri Brooks of Odessa, her husband Steve and their children, Cory, Lance, and Jaci Sue. A son, Larry Don of Hobbs, N.M., his wife, Juhree and their children, Riley Don and Emily. His Mother, Jo Castleman of Eden, Texas, brothers, L.C. (Butch) Castleman of Idabel, OK. and Gary Castleman of Belen, N.M.
His first love besides his wife was golf. He also enjoyed fishing with his buddies and watching football. Don loved all his grandchildren and enjoyed being involved in their activities. He will be missed dearly by all of his family and many friends.
Graveside services are being held at 10 a.m. (MT) today at Prairie Haven cemetery in Hobbs, N.M. Memorials may be made to the Lea County Cowboy Hall of Fame in Hobbs, N.M.

Louella Dain Compton

Monahans - Louella Dain Compton, 55, of Monahans, died Sunday, January 29, 2006 at her residence. She was born July 5, 1950 in Monahans, to E. M. “Pete” and Marie Rush) Dain. She was an LVN.
Services are set for 2 p.m. Wednesday, February 1, 2006 at First Baptist Church, with Reverend Matt Wilson officiating. Burial will follow in Monahans Memorial cemetery, under the direction of Harkey Family Funeral Services.
Survivors include her daughters, Michelle Alvarez and husband, John, of Odessa, Kimberly Moss and husband, Scotty, of Odessa and Maegan Compton of Odessa. Also her mother, Marie Knight and husband, Jim of Monahans. Her brother, Lawrence Dain and wife, Vanda, of Spring. Also 2 grandchildren, Jessica and John Alvarez.
She was preceded in death by her father, E. M. “Pete” Dain on April 15, 1973.

Glen Grissom

Crane - Glen Grissom was born August 9, 1919 in De Leon, Texas. He passed away January 27, 2006 with a massive heart attack.
Glen was a decorated Veteran of World War II, serving his country proudly.
Glen’s family was very important to him — from the many band concerts, football games, family camping trips to all the reunions. Glen and Helon moved their family to Crane in 1952. From an early age Glen worked on cars, trucks, military equipment and served in the oilfield mechanic business until 1984.
Glen and Helon enjoyed his retirement by traveling around the country with the “Oil Patch Scouts” and playing games with friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years Helon Grissom, 1993; parents Houston and Doris Grissom; two brothers Buster and Bobby Wayne Grissom; and wife of 2 years Margie Grissom 1996; and special relatives sister-in-law Audrey Grissom Peoples and mother-in-law Pearl Wright.
In his 53 years in Crane, Glen wore many hats and was honored in 1988 as “Man of the Year” and Outstanding Citizen. The list of services performed were Crane Mayor, member of City Council, Fire Chief, Civil Defense Director, Representative for the extension of Highway 385, and served as a member of the police reserve.
Glen is survived by his daughters; Glenda Grissom Parmentier of San Jose, CA, Toby Grissom of Carrollton, TX, sister Mavis Baxley of Tacoma, WA, and sister-in-law Margaret Trapp and husband Bill Trapp. Nieces and Nephews; Gloria and James Dean, Joe and Tandra Bulkeley, Tami and John Fruhbauer, Greg and Tamie Baxley, Pam and David Selness, Evan and Donna Trapp, Troylene and Dale Middleton, Larry and Linda Grissom.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm on Monday, January 30, 2006 at the Tabernacle Baptist Church with Reverend David Bryant and Reverend Lyndel Lee officiating. Burial will follow in the Crane County cemetery with arrangements under the direction of Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home.
Serving as pallbearers will be members of the Crane Volunteer Fire Department. Charley Hyche, Gary Collier, Scott McMeans, Mark Walters, Glen Calvin, and Vic McWilliams. Honorary pallbearers will be the rest of the department, as well as Doland Tipton, Raymond Weatherby, James Dean, Joe Bulkeley, and Bill Trapp.
The family would like to thank the special angels Doland and Demolee Tipton, Judge Donnie Henderson, Joe and Tandra Bulkeley, Dr. Sixta Gumato, Krystal Heredia, Suzanne Sutherland, Gina Norvell, Joseph Grawburg, staff at the Crane Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and the many Crane citizens who cared for Glen.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Crane Volunteer Fire Department.

Victor H. Justis, Jr.

Odessa - Victor Hugo Justis, Jr. 82, passed on to Heaven Sunday morning, January 29, 2006. He was born in Jal, N.M., on January 20, 1924, to Victor Artie Justis as one of 13 children. He served in WW II as a Carpenter’s Mate Second Class (T) (CB) until December 1945, and joined his wife in Odessa after his discharged.
Victor was well-known in Odessa as an oilfield mechanic, working for several drilling companies such as Big Chief Drilling, Baker & Taylor Drilling, Brantly Drilling and Tom Brown Drilling. He then went to work for Anderson-Taylor Company which later became ATCO Services Inc., where he became a part owner for several years before retiring. He was known as the person to call when anyone had a problem or something needed to be fixed.
“Vic” was also a very active member of the First Church of God in Odessa, serving for many years on the Board of Trustees or as the Maintenance Man and as a Sunday School Teacher. He loved the Lord and loved his church. He was a very loving and giving person and father and will be sorely missed by his family.
Vic, who became know as “Pop” is survived by his wife of 62 years, Helen Louise Justis, his daughter Vickie Anne Fields and husband, David, three sons- Richard Lee Justis and wife, Lynne of Pasadena, TX, Dr. Daniel Hugo Justis and wife, Janet, of Odessa, and Tim W. Justis and wife, Kim of Stephenville, TX 6 grandchildren Kerri Justis of Houston, Richard L. Justis, Jr., of Austin, Jolie Justis of Dallas, William Justis of Lubbock, Jessica Callaway of Orlando, FL and Ashley Justis of Stephenville, Texas, and 3 great grandchildren Richard Justis III, Austin Callaway and Mykenzie Callaway of Orlando, FL.
The family will be receiving friends at Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors on Tuesday night 6 to 8:00 pm, and a celebration of his life will be held at the First Church of God, 2212 E. 11th Street, Odessa, Texas, at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, with interment following at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Services entrusted to Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors.

Delma Matthews

Coleman - Delma Matthews, age 77, of Coleman, died Sunday, January 29, 2006 at Anson General Hospital in Anson. Graveside services will be 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, February 1, 2006 at the Gouldbusk cemetery Pavilion. A Memorial Service will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Rodney Martin officiating. Services are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.
She was born Delma Lee Martin on September 2, 1928 in Gouldbusk, the daughter of Barney Martin and Mae Pearl Martin. She grew up in Gouldbusk and attended school at Mozelle. She married Carl P. Matthews on March 16, 1946 in Fort Worth. He preceded her in death on December 9, 2005. She was a housewife and a member of the First Baptist Church.
She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Sherry Matthews and David Dismukes of Waco; one son and daughter-in-law, Ted Matthews and Betsy King of Anson; one grandson, Matthew King of Anson and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband three brothers and one sister: Dewey Martin, Ray Martin, Bill Martin and Zelma Martin.
Family visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be the Martin nieces, Lazelle, Brenda, Terry, Tammy, Shelly, Celia and Pam.
Memorials may be made to the Donor’s favorite charity.

Gary Dean ‘Bear’ Peltz

Odessa - Gary Dean “Bear” Peltz, age 58, of Odessa, passed away Sunday, January 29, 2006 at Medical Center Hospital. He entered this life September 10, 1947 born in Fall River County, S.D. to the late, Bob and Anita (Nickels) Peltz.
An avid builder and flyer of model airplanes, Bear married Shannon Allen in 1997. He was an oilfield salesman and enjoyed the outdoors, fishing and gardening.
Those left behind to cherish his love and memories are wife, Shannon Peltz of Odessa, two sons, Mike Purkens and Shane Ferguson and wife, Lori of Odessa, three daughters, Tina and husband, Geoff Goode of Midland, Melissa Peltz of Midland and Tiffney Allen of Iowa City, Iowa, two sisters, Penny Wift of Gillette, Wyoming and Susan Kenny of New Castle, Wyoming, one brother-in-law, Elroy Allen of Odessa, and nine grandchildren, Dylan, Bailey, Madison, Tristen, Tyler, Coltyn, Stetsyn, Leia and Lexi and his trusty dog “Butch.”
Funeral services in his honor will be 3 p.m., Tuesday, January 31, 2006 at Acres West Funeral Chapel, 8115 W. University with Brother Roy Jones officiating. Services are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel.
The family wishes to thank their many friends for their love and support.

Helen Marie Main

ODESSA - Helen Marie Wadkins Main, a longtime resident of Odessa, passed away Friday, January 13, 2006, at Parks Methodist Retirement Village.
She was born in Joplin, MO, to Roy and Marie Wadkins on April 21, 1919. Helen spent her life caring for her husband and children. She was a member of the First Christian Church. She married Marion K. Main on September 8, 1940, in Joplin, MO. He preceded her in death on February 12, 2004.
She is survived by daughters, Linda Kay Robinette of Amarillo, Gail Ann Perry of Houston, Marilyn J. Main of Odessa, and son, Stephen K. Main and wife, Lynda of Odessa; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Monday night from 6:00-7:30 p.m. at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
Memorial services will be held in the Chapel at First Christian Church on Tuesday, January 17, 2006, at 11:00 a.m. with Dr. David Mindel officiating.
Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.

Kenneth Lloyd Brown

Odessa - Kenneth Lloyd Brown 69, of Odessa passed away Wednesday, January 18, 2006 at Hospice House in Odessa.
Graveside services will be 1:00 pm Saturday at Sunset Memorial Gardens with Rev. John Lyons officiating.
Kenneth was born September 22, 1936 in Ringgold, Texas. He worked as an auto mechanic at Bronco Chevrolet for 30 years. He loved NASCAR and was a drag racer in his younger years.
He is survived by his daughter Sherri Tennyson of Lubbock; stepdaughter Denise David of Odessa; stepson Wesley Cravens of Odessa; brothers Hal Brown Jr. of Orange, TX, James Brown of Roswell, Seth Brown of White, GA; sisters Joy Ray of San Antonio, Betty Joel Hester of Ruidoso and five grandsons.
Services entrusted to Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors.

Doris Leon Ethridge Matney

Odessa - Doris Leon Ethridge Matney went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, January 18, 2006.
Doris was born in Midland, Texas to Bill and Elizabeth Ethridge, and was raised in Stanton, Texas. She married Wayne Matney on June 18th, 1949 and they moved to Odessa in 1950 where they operated the Wayne Matney Shoe Stores in Odessa and Midland for thirty-eight years.
Doris was a devoted and loving wife, mother and friend. She had a gentle and loving soul and a feisty Irish spirit that will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
Mrs. Matney was a long time member of Highland United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Dorcas Circle, United Methodist Women, the Oil Burner Car Club of Odessa, and the AACA — Antique Automobile Club of America.
Doris is survived by her husband; Wayne Matney, of Odessa; two daughters, Connie Martin of Abilene, Texas and Sandra Matney of Kingsland, Texas; one surviving sister, Joyce L. Tomlin of Midland, Texas and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation with the family will be Friday, January 20th, 2006 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.
The Reverend Mark Scott and Reverend David Weyant will officiate at services to be held at the Sunset Memorial Chapel on Saturday, January 21st, 2006, at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow in the Gardens.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Highland United Methodist Church, 1808 North Dixie Boulevard, Odessa, TX 79761.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Sunset Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home.

Viola Winford Browning

Odessa - Viola Magdalene (Biddy) Browning, 92, of Odessa passed away Wednesday, January 18, 2006 at the Hospice House. She was born September 23, 1913 in Cottle County, TX. to Jim & Irene Biddy. She was a retired restaurant manager. Viola was a lover of people and loved the Lord very much.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husbands, C.W. Winford & J.C. Browning, and son Rex and sister, Floy Johnson.
She is survived by her son, Rocky Winford of Odessa, daughter, Suzy Brown & husband Tom of Littlefield, (5) grandchildren, Whitney, Torey, Ben Chuck and Kyle, (5) great-grandchildren, Sean Erin, Colin, Taylor, Chris & Emma.
Funeral services will be held 3:00 p.m. Friday, January 20, 2006 at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jimmy Braswell officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
