Ruth Price
Ruth Price went home to be with her Lord on Monday, Sept. 22, 2008.
She was born in Farmersville on June 14, 1924, the youngest daughter of Rev. George Washington Pitts and Lina Birdinia Clanton. Ruth married Calvin Price in Littlefield on June 20, 1948. She was a longtime resident of Littlefield, and worked as an accountant in their CPA practice.
Ruth enjoyed poetry, singing, gospel music, going to church and caring for her family.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 60 years, Calvin Price; son, Thaxter Price and wife Alice of Lubbock; daughter, Marilyn Parker and husband Ronnie of Odessa; brother, Rev. L. Wayne Pitts of Lakeland, Fla.; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive visitors from 6 -8 p.m. Wednesday evening, Sept. 24, 2008, at Hammons Funeral Home, 503 East 5th Street, Littlefield. Rev. L. Wayne Pitts, assisted by Rev. Gary Boles, pastor of the First United Methodist Church will conduct a Celebration of Life at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, 2008, in the chapel at Hammons Funeral Home. Interment will be at the Littlefield Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the Choir Department at the First United Methodist Church on 700 West 14th Street, Littlefield, Texas 79339.
Sunny Vaughn
Sunny Vaughn of Arlington and formerly of Tahoka departed this life on Sept. 19, 2008, at the age of 66 years. She was born on May 7, 1942, to Randall "Hick" and Pauline "Polly" (Wheeler) Gibson in Tahoka. Sunny attended Tahoka schools. She also attended McMurray and Texas Tech University. Mrs. Vaughn moved from Grand Prairie to Arlington in 1967. Sunny married Homer Vaughn in Tahoka on March 24, 1962. She worked for Schaefer Art Bronze Casting. Sunny was a member of Arlington High Booster Club and Lady Optimist Club. She was a member of the Methodist Church.
Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, Homer; her mother, Pauline Gibson of Tahoka; one daughter, Tori Vaughn and husband James King of Maypearl; one son, Ty Vaughn of Arlington; one brother, Kent Gibson and wife Lynda of Lubbock; and a host of nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her father; and one sister, Cindy Gibson.
Graveside Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2008, at Tahoka Cemetery in Tahoka with Rev. Vernon Baker officiating.
Arrangements are under the personal care of White Funeral Home of Tahoka.
Tom Carrothers
Tom Carrothers of Lubbock departed this life on Sept. 21, 2008, at the age of 56 years. He was born on May 12, 1952 in Canton, Ohio, to Roy and Leona (Teufel) Carrothers. Tom attended Lincoln High School in Canton, and graduated in 1970; he then attended Kent State University and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Telecommunications. Tom moved to Texas in 1980 living in Midland and Snyder before moving to Lubbock in 1995. Tom was a man of many talents, and was a member as well as worked as a custodian of the St. Elizabeth University Parish Catholic Church. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #12803; and a member of the Third Order Franciscans Community of Lubbock.
Those left to cherish his memory are his two sisters, Georgia Eshelman and husband Jack of Massillon, Ohio, and Theresa Moritz and husband Albert; nephew, Blaise, and wife Roseanne and their children Beatrice and Tobias all of Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
Thomas was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Mark Carrothers.
In lieu of flowers, the family would like to request memorials be sent to Knights of Columbus Council #12803 or to St. Elizabeth University Parish Catholic Church at 2305 Main Street, Lubbock, Texas 79401.
Rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept.24, 2008, at White Memorial Chapel of Lubbock. Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, 2008, at the St. Elizabeth University Parish Chapel with Father James O'Connor officiating. Interment is to follow at a later date at the Peaceful Gardens Memorial Park in Woodrow.
Arrangements are under the personal care of White Funeral Home of Lubbock.
Gerald Mewborn
Gerald Mewborn, 67, of Lubbock, died Monday at UMC. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at City of Lubbock Cemetery, under the direction of Rix Funeral Directors. His family will receive friends from 5:30-7 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral home.
Gerald was born in Lubbock and was retired as a drywall installer.
Survivors include his mother, Martha Mewborn; two sisters, Verna Greer and Barbara Davis; and a brother, Don Mewborn, all of Lubbock; a son, Scott Mewborn and his daughter Gina Kosial, of Scottsdale, Ariz.; five grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
His father, Elvis Mewborn, preceded Gerald in death in January of 1996.
Henry Higgins
Henry Higgins of Lubbock departed this life on Sept. 22, 2008, at the age of 86 years. He was born to Millard and Nana Higgins on Oct. 9, 1921, in Rice, Wash. Henry was a carpenter until his retirement in 1987.
He is survived by one son, John Higgins of Lubbock.
Graveside services will be 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2008, at Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery in Dallas.

J. C. "Jake" Florence
J. C. "Jake" Florence, 73, passed away Sunday, Sept. 21, 2008, at Vista Care. He was born to Clyde and Ella Mae Florence on Oct. 13, 1934, in Lubbock County. He married Martha (Pat) Moore on Dec. 27, 1959, in Lubbock. He is preceded in death by his parents; one son, Norman; four brothers; and two sisters. He is survived by two daughters; one sister, Bernese Chastain; one special angel, Matthew; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept.24, 2008, at Bethany Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Peaceful Garden Cemetery under the direction of Griffin Mortuary.
Family will receive friends from 5-9 p.m. today at Griffin Mortuary.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bethany Baptist Building Fund or Vista Care.
L. E. Bevel, Jr.
L. E. Bevel, Jr., 74, of Winnie died Sept. 22, 2008.
A native of the Lubbock area, L. E. lived in Winnie the last 12 years. He was a retired, self employed distributor of home improvement materials and an Air Force Veteran of the Korean era, after retirement, he worked at Broussard's in Winnie as a funeral attendant. Before moving to Winnie, L. E. was a lifelong resident of the Anton and Lubbock area where he was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Anton.
Masonic Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday in Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Broussard's in Winnie.
Survivors include his son, Galen and his wife Rebecca of Friendswood; daughter, LaVone Miles of Memphis, Tenn.; brother, Gayland Bevel and his wife Pam of Winnie; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Mrs. Olivia Teresita (Pesqueda) Casares of Morton, 74, died Sept. 22, 2008, in Morton. Visitation will be 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Sept. 22, 23, 24, 2008, at Head Duarte Memorial Chapel in Morton. Rosary Services will be 7 p.m. Monday, 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, and 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22, 23, 24, 2008, at St. Ann's Catholic Church of Morton. Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, 2008, at St. Ann's Catholic Church of Morton with Fr. Heriberto Mercado officiating. Interment will follow at City of Morton Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of Head Duarte Funeral Home of Levelland.
Charles Edwin Galey
Services for Charles Edwin Galey, 76, of Lubbock will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2008, at the First United Methodist Church with Dr. Jay Horton officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Sanders Funeral Home. He passed away on Sept. 21, 2008, after a brief illness.
The family will receive friends from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2008, at Sanders Funeral Home.
Charlie was born Nov. 15, 1931, in County Line to Hershel and Beatrice Galey. He attended Shallowater Schools and graduated from Lubbock High School in 1949. He was honored to be voted President of the student body and All-Westerner Boy. He received a full athletic scholarship at SMU where he played baseball and basketball and was named co-captain of the basketball team and captain of the baseball team. After completing his undergraduate degree at SMU, he played professional baseball for the Lubbock Hubbers. Charlie served in the U.S. Air Force from 1954-1956. On April 21, 1956, he married Gloria Ruth Snell at the First United Methodist Church in Lubbock. He then attended law school at SMU on an academic scholarship. After graduating law school, he and Gloria moved back to Lubbock. He joined the Campbell, Brock, Waters and Wright Law Firm and later became a partner. After several years he established his own firm in Lubbock and served as attorney for the Lubbock County Hospital District.
Charles was chairman of the board for Lubbock MHMR and was president of the Lubbock State Bar Association, a member of the Southwest Rotary Club and was 32nd Degree Mason. He was a strong Christian and a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church.
Charles was a beloved husband and father and a great friend to many; he will be deeply missed. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Gloria; a son, Charles Gregory Galey of Manchaca; and a daughter, Ginifer Ruth Galey of Santa Fe.
