Maria E. Morales

Memorial services for Maria E. Morales will be 4 p.m. today at Calvillo Funeral Home Chapel- Tahoka. Cremation will be under the direction of Calvillo Funeral Home. Maria passed away on Sunday.

She was born Aug. 26, 1934, to the late Cruz and Francisca Guererro in Corpus Christi. She grew up in O'Donnell and spent the latter part of her life in Tahoka. Maria was employed as a Health Care Provider. She was also a board member for the Tahoka Housing Authority. Maria was a very loving and caring mother, grandmother, sister and friend. Her wholehearted spirit will greatly be missed.

She is preceded in death by a son, Santos Navarrette; a grandson, Jimmy Morales Jr.; and two granddaughters, Lucinda Morales and LeAnn Mojica.

She is survived by five sons, Jimmy Morales, Roger Morales and Johnny Morales, all of O'Donnell, Fidel Morales, Jr., of Lubbock, and Joe Morales of Grant, Mich.; four daughters, JoAnn Graves of Tahoka, Olga Mojica of Brownfield, Mary Morales and Alice Gonzales, both of Lubbock; 15 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and two great great-grandchildren.

Dovie Jean Loughridge Stripling

Dovie Jean Stripling's 100 years on this earth came to a peaceful close on Oct. 4, 2008, at Covenant Hospital in Lubbock. Jean was born on Nov. 27, 1907, in Fulton, Ark., to George and Pearl Loughridge. She was a member of a family which included five sisters, Letha, Margaret, Betty, Louise and Bea, and two brothers, Bill and Doyle. Jean grew up in Healton, Okla. At 18, she moved to Fort Worth where she attended nursing school at City County Hospital receiving her Registered Nurse degree in 1928. This degree matched her spirit well as she always tried to help ill people with their problems.

After moving to Big Spring in 1936, she became a surgical nurse as well as Supervisor of Nurses at the Bivings and Barcus Hospital and actively volunteered at the local Health Department for many years. At this time she met a young insurance salesman, Robert Stripling, Sr., who would become the love of her life. They married in 1936 and had many happy years traveling together, enjoying their many friends and their son, Robert Stripling, Jr. Jean was the greatest mom who loved her family unconditionally and supported them wholeheartedly in everything they did.

Jean was a master gardener. She helped initiate the Big Spring Garden Club and was a faithful member for over 50 years. Receiving many ribbons for her arrangements in flower shows, Jean especially enjoyed taking her flower arrangements to the church for special events and to ill friends at their home. A large area of her yard was always devoted to a garden for flowers. After her husband, Robert, Sr. died in 2002, she came to live with her son, Robert, Jr. in Lubbock. Jean's family includes her son Robert and wife Melissa Stripling; grandsons, Joe Ryan and Chris Logou; grandson, Steve Stripling and wife Tiffany and their son, Harris of Lubbock; granddaughter, Stacy and husband Mouli Cohen of Belvedere, Calif., two brothers-in-law, Allen Stripling and wife Adelle of Dallas, and John Stripling and wife Marjorie of Fort Worth; one sister-in-law, Ruth Webb and husband Darrell of Fort Worth; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In celebration of her life, a wake will be 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2008, at the home of her son, Robert Stripling, 4619 8th Street, Lubbock. The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Tuesday at Nalley Pickle & Welch Funeral Home in Big Spring. A memorial service at the First United Methodist Church in Big Spring will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2008, followed by a committal service at the Mt. Olive Memorial Park. May she rest in peace and rise in glory. She was loved by many and will be greatly missed.

Rather than flowers, the family request memorials in Jean's name to be given to Teen Challenge, 6901 S. County Road 1200, Midland, Texas 79706.

Cynthia L. Bundrant Roos Hayashi

Cynthia L. Hayashi, 50, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008, at South Austin Hospital. She was born on Sept. 5, 1958, in El Paso. She spent her childhood and teenage years in Lubbock and Austin. Other locations of her prior residence include Gwinn, Mich., Omaha, Neb., Ypsilanti, Mich., and Novi, Mich.

She was a dedicated mother and wife as well as wonderful friend to all those who came in contact with her. Zest for life and charity she displayed continuously will truly be missed. She is survived by her husband, Kazuyoshi; her daughter, Heather; her son, Kevin; her step-mother, Jean; and her brother, Alan and his wife. She is also survived by two half-sisters, one uncle and his wife, and many cousins and their spouses.

The viewing will be 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2008, and the memorial service will be 11:30 a.m. at Bee Cave Chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 12001 Bee Cave Road, Austin.

Caleb Sean DeLeon

Rosary for Caleb Sean DeLeon, 1, of Crosbyton will be 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2008, at San Jose Catholic Church in Crosbyton. Mass will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2008, at the same church with Rev. Ernesto Lopez officiating. Burial will follow in Crosbyton Cemetery under direction of Adams Funeral Home of Crosbyton.

Caleb passed away Monday, Oct. 6, 2008, at his home in Crosbyton. He was born Aug. 2, 2007, in Lubbock to Juanita DeLeon. He had lived in Crosbyton all his life.

Survivors include his mother, Juanita of Crosbyton; grandparents, Robert DeLeon, Sr. and Margarita DeLeon of Crosbyton; a sister, Madison Ray DeLeon of Crosbyton; uncles and aunts, Robert DeLeon Jr., Patrick and Sandra DeLeon, Sam and Mary Salas, all of Crosbyton, Gloria DeLeon of Lubbock, George and Felicia DeLeon of Brownsville, and Daniel and Bonnie Gonzales of Jacksonville, N.C.

William J. Heck

William "Bill" J. Heck, 90, passed away Oct. 4, 2008, in Granbury. Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Wiley Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Tolar Cemetery. Visitation will be 4:30-6:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Bill was born April 26, 1918, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to William R. and Frances Hennessey Heck. He attended Jesuit School in New York, received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vt., and graduated with honors with a law degree from Columbia University. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in El Paso where he taught Celestial Navigation. After he was discharged, he moved to Santa Fe, N.M., where he worked in the State Attorney's Office. He opened his own law office in Hobbs, N.M., in 1950, retiring April 1, 1997, after 47 years. He was a very prominent and successful attorney in N.M. He moved to Ruidoso, N.M., alternating between Ruidoso and Granbury and decided to retire in Granbury. He married Elizabeth Louise Florence on June 30, 1973, in Granbury. He had his own band in college and came in second in a singing contest losing to Frank Sinatra. Losing made him decide to go to law school. He was on the Subway Alumni of Notre Dame. At one time he tried out for the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team. He liked horse racing and raced thoroughbred horses. He was a member of St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church.

Survivors include wife, Elizabeth Louise Heck of Granbury; daughters and husbands, Stella and Ted Barrow, Leslee and Gary Erickson and Abbe and Robert Lawson; grandchildren, Elaina and Dennis Carr, Keith and Jennifer Erickson, Cheryl Erickson and Robert "Stone" Lawson; and great-grandchildren, Khaki and Zoe Carr and Ashlyn Erickson.

Dorothy Mae Moye

Services for Dorothy Mae Moye, 76, of Lubbock will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, October 7, 2008 at Hope Deliverance Temple. Burial will follow in the City of Lubbock Cemetery. Services will be under direction of Ossie Curry Funeral Home. Viewing will be Monday, October 6, 2008 from 1 until 7 p.m., and a wake will be held from 7 until 8 p.m. at Ossie Curry Funeral Home.

Brian Hawthorne, Jr.

Brian Lamar Hawthorne, Jr., 21, of Lubbock passed away at UMC Thursday, September 18, 2008. Brian was born to parents Dee Ann Wooley and Brian Lamar Hawthorne, Sr. on October 17, 1986 in Lubbock. Brian was full of energy, talent and smiles, and he had a love for arts and sports. He attended Wheatly Elementary School until he became ill.

Preceded in death are his grandparents, Audry Lee Sneed, Thomas D. Wooley, Sr., and James Hawthorne. He leaves to mourn his mother, Dee Ann Wooley; a sister, La Quitta Wilson; a grandmother, Luella Hawthrone; two uncles, Douglas Wooley and James Hawthorne, Jr.; five aunts, La Nell Willard, La Tasha Hawthorne, Tammy Hawthorne, Kimberly Hawthorne, and Carla Searcy; a host of cousins, other relatives, and friends.

Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, September 27, 2008 at Agape Temple. Burial will follow at City of Lubbock Cemetery under the direction of Griffin Mortuary.

Family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at Griffin Mortuary.

Marilyn Storey

Marilyn Storey of Port Neches passed away Sept. 18, 2008, after a short illness in the aftermath of Hurricane Ike. She was born Jan. 3, 1934, in Warsaw, Ind., to Roscoe and Nellie Brown. She graduated from Warsaw High School in 1952, and married Raymond Storey on June 12, 1955. She and her husband spent most of their life in the restaurant business owning and operating several successful restaurants in the Beaumont/Port Arthur area. Her husband preceded her in death on Oct. 7, 2005.

She is survived by her son, Jeff Storey and wife Dana of Lubbock and their children Lara and Elizabeth of Boerne, and Chelsea and Bianca of Lubbock; daughter Jody Morell and husband Max of Beaumont and their children Brian and Dusty; brother, Norman Brown and wife Wanda of Warsaw, Ind.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at Clayton-Thompson Funeral Home in Groves as soon as they are able to reopen due to damage from the hurricane. In lieu of flowers the family has asked that donations be made to the Benavides Family Fund c/o Watson Sysco Food Service, 714 2nd Place, Lubbock, Texas 79401.

Raul (El Maestro) Garcia

Raul (El Maestro) Garcia of Lubbock departed this life on September 25, 2008 at the age of 52 years. He was born on February 20, 1956 to Luis and Connie Garcia in Phoenix, Ariz. He married Margie Garcia who preceded him in death. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Raul was a musician and played for various Tejano music groups.

Those left to cherish his memory are his mother, Connie Garcia; two brothers, Johnny and Adam Garcia, both of Lubbock; seven sisters, Elidia Vasquez of Lubbock; Adela Garcia of Abernathy; Eva Lopez of El Paso; Mary Lou Preto, Mary Rivera, Susie Hinojosa, and Lucy Garcia, all of Lubbock.

Raul was preceded in death by his father, Luis Garcia; one uncle, Alex Galvan; and his wife.

Rosary will be 7 p.m. Friday, September 26, 2008 at White Memorial Chapel in Lubbock. Mass will be celebrated 9 a.m. Saturday, September 27, 2008 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church with Father Martin Pena officiating. Interment will follow at Peaceful Gardens Memorial Park in Woodrow.

Arrangements are under the personal care of White Funeral Home of Lubbock.

Sherry Diane Minzenmayer

Sherry Diane (Greer) Minzenmayer, a resident of Llano for ten years, coming from Austin, was called by our Heavenly Father after a battle with cancer on Tuesday, September 23, 2008 in Austin at the age of 59. She was born on September 27, 1948 to Irene J. (Banks) and Douglas Greer in Slaton. She was a member of the St. James Lutheran Church in Llano, a member of a quilting club, was interested in Genealogy, and worked for Southwestern Bell for 28 years. She also loved hunting, hiking, and quilting with family and friends.

Mrs. Minzenmayer was preceded in death by her father, Douglas Greer.

Survivors include her beloved husband of 18 years, Robert Minzenmayer of Llano; daughter, Pam Cantrell and husband Raymond of Liberty Hill; sons, Mark Campbell of Hutto, Jeff Minzenmayer and wife Beth of Weatherford; mother, Irene Greer of Lubbock; brother, Ronnie Greer and wife Judy of Lubbock; grandchildren, Myles Campbell, Payton Minzenmayer, Shane Cantrell, and Emily Cantrell.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday, September 26, 2008 at Waldrope-Hatfield-Hawthorne Funeral Home Chapel in Llano with Pastor Elliott Pancoast officiating. Interment will follow at the Llano City Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Calvin Moerbe, Cecil Clark, Shane Cantrell, Jim Winn, Al Lynch, Robby Christopher, and Travis Riddle.

The family wishes to extend special thanks for all the prayers, love, and support during this difficult time.

Jack T. Phillips

Jack Talbert Phillips was born on January 1, 1923, at home in a small community near the town of Royston, to Green Barry and Lillie (Talbert) Phillips. He passed away on September 25, 2008, at his home.

Celebration of Life services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, September 27, 2008 at Resthaven's Abbey Chapel with Rev. Danny Lucas officiating. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park. Visitation will be on Friday from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Jack graduated from Hitson High School in 1941. Jack and Willie Vance were married on December 10, 1942 in Noodle. Jack was drafted into the U.S. Army on January 20, 1943 and served his country for almost three years. He was a combat veteran serving in Germany. He was promoted to the rank of Private First Class and was awarded the European-African-Middle Eastern Medal and Ribbon with two bronze stars, two Army Good Conduct Medals indicated by two bronze knots, the Army Occupation Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, marksman badge, rifle qualification bar, pistol bar, submachine gun bar, and an aviator badge. He was a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. After World War II, Jack returned to Lubbock and became a carpenter by trade. He worked for Texas Tech, building the student buildings and for Furr's Inc., building all their grocery stores all over the Southwest. He retired at the age of 60 due to health reasons. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and camping, but most of all spending time with his family. He was active in the Carpenter's Union and the Democratic Party. He was a member of Broadview Baptist Church.

Jack is survived by his wife, Willie Phillips of Lubbock; two daughters, Beverly Holbert of San Angelo and Diana Hill of Lubbock; three grandchildren, Leann Criswell of San Angelo, Craig Holbert of Hutto, and Cy Hill of Lubbock; seven great-grandchildren, Anisley and Brenley Criswell; Michael, Jake, and Jessie Holbert; and Carson and Brantley Hill.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and two sisters.
