Doris Watkins Manley
Services for Doris Watkins Manley, 62, of Lubbock will be 11 a.m. Friday Oct. 10, 2008, at W.W. Rix Chapel with Major James Fox officiating under the direction of Rix Funeral Directors.
She departed this life on Oct. 6, 2008, with her loving daughters by her side. Doris was born in Lubbock on Oct. 7, 1945, to D.L Watkins and Geggie C. Watkins. Those left to cherish her memory are two daughters, Sherry Manley Prock and husband Joel of Lubbock and Debbie Manley Fox and husband James of San Antonio; sisters, Oleta Simmons and husband Syd of Lubbock, Melva Smith and husband Howard of Idalou; brother, Charles Watkins and wife Jean of Lorenzo; grandchildren, Ryan Rosen, Tiffany Prock, Kyle Fox, Lacy Prock and Kari Fox; and two great-grandchildren.
She attended Lubbock High School and Draughn's Business College. Dottie was filled of life. She loved the Lord, her family and cherished her grandchildren. She loved to read, sew, make crafts, garden, cook, published a cookbook and researched genealogy. She was also a breast cancer survivor.
The family will greet friends for the viewing from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, October 9, at Rix Funeral Directors. Memorials may be sent to Hospice of Lubbock.
Danielle Aleene Brauer
Danielle Aleene Brauer, 39, of Lubbock went to be with our Heavenly Father on Sunday, Oct. 5, 2008, after a lengthy battle with cancer. Inurnment will be 3 p.m. Friday at City of Lubbock Cemetery under the direction of Sanders Funeral Home of Lubbock.
Danielle was born to Francis and Maryon Brauer on Dec. 14, 1968, in Big Spring. Later on in life, she decided to make Lubbock her home, and attended Coronado High School. After graduation, she decided to pursue nursing, and was a certified nurse's aide for many local agencies. She was also a Licensed Realtor.
Survivors include her three children, Robert Nathan, Ian Cole and Sara Ashley; her mother, Maryon A. Baker of Lubbock; one sister, Suzanne Maner of Sunrise Canyon; three brothers, Ron of Lubbock, Don and Michael of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and many friends.
A bereavement fund has been set up for the children at Lubbock National Bank of Lubbock.
Berta Q. Moreno
Berta Q. Moreno of Lubbock departed this life on Oct. 7, 2008, at the age of 84 years. She was born to Marcelino and Ramona DeLaCruz Quesada on June 7, 1924, in Monterrey, Mexico. Berta moved to Lubbock from Rio Hondo in 1948. She married Noe A Moreno in January of 1942 in Rio Hondo. He preceded her in death on Aug.15, 1975. She was a homemaker. Berta was a member of Templo Bautista.
Those left to cherish Berta's memory are three daughters, Cruz Vasquez, Dolores Lincoln, and Olga Esparza, all of Lubbock; six sons, Gilbert Moreno of Fort Worth, Raul Moreno of Lubbock, Joe Luis Moreno of Germany, Eloy Moreno of Lubbock, Jose Manuel Moreno of Midland, and Mario Moreno of Lubbock; 31 grandchildren; 58 great-grandchildren; 14 great great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Trinidad Gonzales of San Antonio and Antonia Cuevas of Fort Worth.
Berta is preceded in death by her husband; one son, Noe Moreno, Jr.; two daughters, Josephine Cuevas and Beatrice Moreno; one grandson Jose Noe Moreno; and one brother, Pablo Olivarez.
Visitation will be 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9, 2008, at White Memorial Chapel in Lubbock. Celebration of Life Services will be 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 10, 2008, at Templo Bautista in Lubbock with Pastor Salvador Trevino officiating. Interment will follow at the City of Lubbock Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the personal care of White Funeral Home of Lubbock.
Velma McNabb Fletcher
Velma McNabb Fletcher and her twin sister Zelma were born April 4, 1915, on Easter Sunday in Bowie. She was the seventh of 13 children born to Walter and Callie McNabb.
Velma graduated from Southland High School as valedictorian. Her father signed her diploma as the School Board President. She won a scholarship to attend Mary Hardin Baylor College.
Velma married Frank Fletcher on July 2, 1935; they raised six children and published many small town newspapers.
Later Velma ran a country store and lunch counter on the yard of Buster's Gin until her kids were older. Then she went back to school and graduated with her son and with honors from Texas Tech University.
In December of 1961, Velma helped establish a family newsletter called the McNabb Gab, which is still going and has a circulation of around 200 copies per month.
After college, Velma worked her way up to being the head dietician at Baylor College of Medicine. After the Lubbock tornado she moved back to Lubbock to be near her family. In Lubbock she took the job of head dietician at West Texas Hospital.
She became a roving dietician to many of the small rural hospitals and nursing homes in this area, finally retiring at the age of 82.
Velma was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; son, Jack; son, Jimmy; daughter, Marilyn; and one grandson. She had 18 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and 11 great great-grandchildren.
The family suggests donations to a favorite charity instead of flowers.
Celebration of life services will be 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 10, 2008, with Rev Robert Field officiating. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park. A visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Resthaven Funeral Home.
Sunnye Blackwell
Sunnye Blackwell, 74, of Dimmitt passed away Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2008, in Dimmitt. Celebration of Life Memorial Services will be 1:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10, 2008, at the First Baptist Church of Dimmitt with Rev. Clint Young officiating. Arrangements are being handled by Colonial Funeral Home of Dimmitt.
Sunnye was born July 6, 1934, to Bernard and Ruth Brown in Hart. Sunnye attended Dimmitt High School and graduated in 1952. She attended business college in Plainview and El Paso.
Sunnye married Elmo Blackwell in Dimmitt on June 30, 1956. Sunnye was not only a loving wife and mother but a successful business woman and a wonderful granny and gran.
She is survived by her husband, Elmo Blackwell of Dimmitt, two sons; Michael Blackwell and wife Jennifer of Littleton, Colo., and Jim Blackwell and wife Jo Lynn of Highlands Ranch, Colo.; one daughter, Suanne Blackwell-Bliss and husband Matt of Dimmitt; her mother, Ruth Brown of Dimmitt; one brother, DeWayne Brown of Hart; six granddaughters; and two great-grandsons.

Mary Gray Mayo
Funeral services for Mary Gray Mayo, age 78, of Levelland will be 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 10, 2008, at First Christian Church in Levelland with the Reverend Jesse Hodge, Pastor, officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of George Price Funeral Home of Levelland.
Mrs. Mayo passed away Tuesday morning at the Garrison Center in Lubbock. She was born in Hockley County in February of 1930 to Simeon and Estelle Freeman. She was raised in the Clauene community, southwest of Levelland. She graduated from Levelland High School and attended Cooke County College in Gainesville. She was active in sports, loved flowers, enjoyed gardening, crafts, and ceramics. She was active in the First Christian Church. Mary worked in the health care field and was the Administrative Assistant to the Administrator of the Gainesville Hospital in Gainesville. She held a similar position with the Girling Home Health Services in Temple, Texas. She was a licensed realtor. Mary was active in Church and civic and service organizations. She once received the Texas Shell Oil Company "State Environmental Service Award for Community Service."
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, John Freeman; and her first husband, Bernus Gray. She married Bailey Mayo in 1965. She is survived by her husband, Bailey Mayo of Levelland; two sons, Byron Gray and wife Nancy of Magnolia and Dewayne Gray and wife Susie of Las Vegas, Nev.; four granddaughters, Amber Gray of Oklahoma City, Okla., Mandy Gray of Bryan/College Station, Autumn Gray of Magnolia and Katlyn Gray of Las Vegas, Nev.; one brother, Bill Freeman and wife Neva of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two sisters, Tammy Driver and husband Doug, and Martha Phillips who reside in the Lubbock area; and numerous nieces and nephews who were loved by Mary.
The family wants to give thanks to the Garrison Center Staff who cared for Mary for these past six years. Also thanks to a special group of friends who bonded together to form the "Forget-Me-Not's", an Alzheimer Spouses Support group at the Garrison Center.
The family will receive friends from 5 - 7 p.m. Thursday night, Oct. 9, 2008, at 101 Sandlewood in Levelland. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made in Mary's memory to the Garrison Geriatric and Care Center at 3710 4th Street, Lubbock, Texas 79415 or to the First Christian Church building and Maintenance fund at 311 Clubview Drive Levelland, Texas 79336.
Marion Ruth Clark Pierce
Marion Ruth Clark Pierce moved to be with her Lord Tuesday morning, Oct. 7, 2008. She was born Sept. 3, 1929, to Leroy and Alice Clark in the state of New Hampshire. Working as a nurse, she met and married Richard Asa Pierce, Sr. on June 28, 1949, and moved to Texas. They were married 45 years until his death in 1994. Together Richard and Marion raised seven children, Richard A. Pierce, Jr. and wife Dannisue of Abilene, Dawn Thomas and husband Roy of Morrow, Ohio, Paul Pierce and wife Beverly of Abilene, Steven Pierce and wife Kathy of Lubbock, Mary Kirschbaum and husband Joe of Abilene, Karen Green and husband Buford of Princeton, Texas, and Wanda Burke of Allen. Being blessed with seven children and their spouses, Marion has 17 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Her brother, Alvin Clark and sister, Nellie Haynes, still reside in New Hampshire.
Marion was affectionately known by her family and close friends as "The Bear". She worked faithfully for the family that she loved deeply. Marion supported her children through little league baseball, track, and other sports. She was involved with her daughters in Girl Scouts. Marion was an excellent seamstress, teaching her daughters how to sew. She was a good cook and often worked magic stretching a pound of hamburger to feed nine. She was a good pianist and organist. Marion loved her dogs. When all of her children were school age, she went with her husband and worked alongside him in the family business. Richard and Marion went on many pleasurable camping trips. Marion was a member of Caps Baptist Church.
Services for Marion Pierce will be 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 10, 2008, at Caps Baptist Church with T. C. Melton conducting the services. Interment will follow in Elmwood Memorial Park (Garden of Gethsemane), directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at a visitation from 5:30 7:30 p.m. Thursday evening, Oct. 9, 2008, at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 5701 Highway 277 South, Abilene, Texas.

Ken Gardner
Services for Ken Gardner, 78, who passed away Monday, Oct. 6, 2008, will be 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10, 2008, in Aspermont. Graveside services will be held at the Aspermont Cemetery by McCoy Funeral Home. Family and friends are asked to meet at First Baptist Church at 1 p.m. and proceed to the gravesite.
Ken was born on May 12, 1930, in Swenson. After graduating from Aspermont High School, he married his high school sweetheart, Dorothy Gardner. He then spent two years of military service in the Navy. After serving in the military, Ken and Dorothy moved back to Texas. Over the years, Ken has spent most of his time in Lubbock and Aspermont where he developed lifelong friendships.
Ken is survived by his wife, Dorothy Gardner; his son, Scott Gardner and wife Alicia Gardner; two grandchildren, Kristopher Gardner and Austin Gardner; his sister, Bettye Gardner; and brother, Sammie Gardner.
Ken was a fun loving person who never met a stranger. He was a kind hearted man who was well liked and loved by all he met. His sense of humor made him an instant friend to most. As his friends know, he was long on stories, jokes and opinions. His love and pride for his grandsons ran deep. Ken's pastime over the last several years was going to ballgames and talking about his grandsons. He was a caring husband, father, grandad, brother and friend. Whether he was at the Place, a grandson's game or a Tech game, he was where he wanted to be and enjoying every minute of it. We will miss you Granddad.

Lois P. LeMond
Lois P. LeMond, 89, passed away Sunday, Oct. 5, 2008, at a local nursing home.
Lois was born in Rochester on May 2, 1919, to William and Annie Choate. She was a longtime resident of Harlingen and a former resident of Lubbock, where she was the Food Manager with the Texas Tech Athletic Dept. from 1965 to 1982. Lois received a special appreciation award from Texas Tech upon her retirement
Lois was a longtime member of the First Christian Church in Harlingen, member of the Order of the Eastern Star, and member of the Red Hatter's.
She is survived by daughters, Drucilla (Jerry) Vinger of McAllen and Carol (David) Jarrett of Lubbock; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers and two sisters. She was preceded in death by her husband, Horace LeMond; four brothers and one sister.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9, 2008, at the First Christian Church in Harlingen with the Rev. Mark Coppins officiating. Burial will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park.
Visitation hours will be 12 p.m. until service time Thursday, Oct. 9, 2008, with the family present at the church.
The family request that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the First Christian Church, 421 S. 13th St., Harlingen, Texas 78550.
