Michael W. Nelson
ODESSA — Mike was born Dec. 4, 1960, in Odessa. He passed away Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at Medical Center Hospital.
Services were held Wednesday, Oct. 5, 1999, at the First Baptist Church with the Revs. Melvin L. Warren of First Baptist Church and Craig Martindale of St. Andrew Cumberland Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial was at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Services were under the direction of Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.
Mike W. Nelson was a lifelong resident of Odessa. He attended Permian High School and worked as a roughneck. He enjoyed being outdoors and especially fishing. He married
Luz Divina Galindo on May 7, 1994, in Ector County. He was a member of First Baptist Church. His passion was to win souls for the Lord and to help those less fortunate.
Survivors include his wife, Divina Nelson of Odessa; parents, Kay and Mary Nelson of Odessa; his brother, Larry Nelson of Odessa; his daughter, Juliet Carrera and her husband, Ricky Carrera II; father-in-law, Andy Galindo; grandchildren, Ricky Carrera III and Ramon Carrera; brother-in-laws, Eleno, Johnny and Ray Galindo, all of Odessa.

Arthur Clinton Atkins
FORT STOCKTON — Arthur Clinton Atkins passed away Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, in Fort Stockton. He was 68.
Clint was born Dec. 15, 1930, in San Angelo, to George Edwin Atkins and Rosa Burton Atkins. He was a resident of Fort Stockton since the second grade. He graduated from Fort Stockton High School in 1949. Clint attended the University of Oklahoma at Norman, graduating with honors and a bachelor of science degree in petroleum engineering. He and high school sweetheart Patricia Moody were married
June 18, 1952. After a two-year enlistment in the Army at Fort Lee, Va., he worked for Mobile Oil and Refining Co. in Midland. Clint returned to Fort Stockton in 1956 to run the George Atkins Estate. He joined Clajon Gas Co. as vice president in 1967. After retiring from Clajon in the 1980s, he kept busy independently in oil and gas properties, real estate and ranching interests. He also served for many years on the board of directors of the Pecos County State Bank.
Mr. Atkins was preceded in death by his parents; his brother Burton Edwin Atkins in 1966; his son Arthur Clinton Atkins Jr. in 1973; and his wife, Patsy Moody, in 1994.
He is survived by his daughter, Myra Atkins of Fort Stockton; his brother, George Edwin Atkins Jr. of Weatherford, Okla., and many nephews and nieces and in-laws, each of which he loved very much. Clint also had a wealth of friends who probably never knew just how special that friendship was to the man.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 8, 1999, at the First Baptist Church of Fort Stockton. Interment will follow at the East Hill cemetery under the direction of the Fort Stockton Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Robert Huckaby, Delmon Hodges, Charles Ezell, Robert Truesdale, Clayton Parker, Bryan Parker, Bradley Parker and Ernest Woodward. Honorary Pallbearers will be Darr Snailum, Earl C. Wisler, J.L. Davis, Frank Pollard, James Scuddy, Walter Scuddy, Sam Pfiester, J.T. Ables, Dr. Omer D. Price, W.C. "Bill" McDonald, David Gomez, David Robbins, Ernest Triplett and Dr. Pat Cordero.
Mr. Atkins’ favorite charities were the Boy Scouts of America, the West Texas Boys Ranch and the Fort Stockton Public Library.

Jesusa Hollowell
ODESSA — Jesusa Mary Aleman Hollowell, 82, of Odessa, a licensed vocational nurse, died Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, at her residence.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints church with Bishop Alan Pitt officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Arrangements by Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
She was born Sept. 6, 1917, in Yorktown. She moved to Odessa in 1951 from Cuero.
Mrs. Aleman came to Odessa in 1951 from Cuero. She was a licensed vocational nurse for 25 years, working in hospitals and nursing homes. She was a member of the American Legion, the V.F.W., Royal Neighbors, Moose Lodge, George Knauff and Rebekkah Lodge #119.

John Runyan "Jack" Neary
ODESSA — John Runyan "Jack" Neary, 78, of Odessa, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, at his residence.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Sunset Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Jimmy Braswell officiating.
He was born May 23, 1921, in New Brunswick, N.J. He married
Jennie Hargett Jan. 18, 1946 in San Pedro, Calif.
Mr. Neary came to Odessa in 1958 from New Brunswick, N.J. He was a truck driver in the oilfield. He was a jack of all trades and very handy with his hands. He always had a smile, because he enjoyed life. He enjoyed Louis L’Amour books, John Wayne movies, and fishing and was one of the original Grumpy Old Men. He was in the Army in the Infantry 44th Division from 1939 to 1945. He was proud that his first son had also served in the military.
He was preceded in death by his son, John Runyan Neary II on May 1, 1968.
Survivors include his wife, Jennie Neary of Odessa; son, Bruce Neary of Houston; daughter, Helen Wolf of El Capitan, N.M., and Rosemarie Yarborough of Odessa; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Dorothy Lee Logsdon
ODESSA — Dorothy Lee Logsdon, a longtime resident of Odessa, was born to Ira and Nellie Young, June 11, 1914, in Metcalfe County, Ky. She passed away Monday morning, Oct. 4, 1999, at her residence.
Graveside services are scheduled at 2 p.m. Thursday at Sunset Memorial Gardens with Chaplain Margaret Ledwith officiating. Services are under the direction of Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.
She married
Youl Logsdon, Dec. 24, 1936, in Owensboro, Ky. He and a son, Jimmy Dale Logsdon, preceded her in death.
Dorothy was a licensed vocational nurse and retired from Medical Center Hospital in 1982 after 25 years of service.
She is survived by a daughter, Patricia Logsdon of Odessa; son and daughter-in-law, Darrell W. and Becky Logsdon of Odessa; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two nieces and two nephews.
Johnny Lee "Cowboy" Canady
ODESSA — Johnny Lee "Cowboy" Canady was born on Sept. 18, 1935, in Caldwell, to Orlean Canady and Hallie Carrol Canady.
Johnny enjoyed his life and was a friend to all who knew him. He was employed by Jones Brothers Dirt and Paving Construction for 25 years. He married
Helena Bankston in 1970 and was a member of Greater St. John Baptist Church.
Mr. Canady passed away Friday, Oct. 1, 1999, at Medical Center Hospital.
Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Thursday at Martinez Funeral Home, with the family to receive friends from 8 until 9 p.m. Thursday.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Greater St. John Baptist Church with the Rev. Elder Shelton officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill cemetery.
Johnny is survived by his wife, Helena of Odessa; six brothers, the Rev. Edward Canady of Lubbock, Willie Canady of Waco, Walter Canady of Rosewell, N.M., Dennis Canady of Killeen, Chester Canady of Caldwell and Joe L. Canady of Farmington, N.M.; and two sisters, Edna Matthews of Victorville, Calif., and Hallie L. Dawson of Caldwell.
He leaves to cherish his memories many relatives and friends.
Martinez Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Louise H. Helm
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — Louise H. Helm, 78, of Flagstaff, Ariz., died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 1999, at a Prescott Valley care home.
Memorial services will be held at a later date.
Her father was the founder and first pastor of the Baptist Church of Odessa and Belmont Baptist Church.
Mrs. Helm graduated from Odessa High School and attended Hardin Simmons University in Abilene. She married
Ernest Paul Helm in 1940 and lived in Odessa, El Paso and Wichita, Kan., before settling in Dallas to raise her family.
She was a member of the PTA, North Dallas Garden Club, Coterie, Fool’s Friday and was co-president with her husband of the Dallas Figure Skating Club.
She moved back to Odessa in 1970 and opened a bookstore "Book Haven" with her high school friend, Helen McLendon. She retired in 1983 and moved to Alpine. In 1989, she moved to Cottonwood, Ariz., because of her health. She then moved to Prescott Valley, Ariz., in 1992. She was an avid gardener, rock hound, and loved restoring old houses and all social gatherings.
She is preceded in death by her daughter, Jerri H. Bird in 1996.
Survivors include her son, Richard E. Helm of Flagstaff, Ariz.; daughter, Paula J. Helm of Flagstaff, Ariz.; brother, William Carl Harrison of Fort Worth; sisters, Mildred Owen of Stephenville and Joyce H. Vaught of Bryan; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Memorials can be made to the local chapter of Alzheimer’s Association.
