Jeryl Donnie Hillis
Jeryl Donnie Hillis, 60, went home to be with our Lord Jesus Christ on April 15, 1999. He had fought a valiant fight against cancer for six years. But God decided he needed him in heaven.
He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Jeryl was a deacon at the church that he loved, Belmont Baptist Church. He was always willing to work and do what was needed of him.
Jeryl worked for TU Electric for 32 years, then after his retirement went to work for Sentry Service. Jeryl was never one to be idle and was always working.
He is survived by Sharon Kay, his wife of 38 years; one daughter and her husband, Jackie and Mike Kerley; and Jeryl’s precious grandchildren, Heather and Caleb; one son, Kevin Hillis and Jeryl’s precious granddaughter, Kirsten; brothers, James E. Hillis of Odessa, Gary L. Hillis of Comanche and Michael E. Hillis of Greeley, Colo.; sister, Mitsy J. Cleveland of Brownwood; and by all the nieces and nephews that he loved.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, April 19, at Belmont Baptist Church with the Rev. Rex Clayton officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Arrangements by Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
Arvol Matthews
ODESSA — Arvol Edmond Matthews, 73, of Gardendale, an industrial mechanic, died Saturday, April 17, 1999, at the Parks Methodist Retirement Village.
Graveside services will be 3 p.m. Monday at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Odessa. Arrangements by Odessa Funeral Home Angeles Memorial Chapel.
Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday.
He was born in Roscoe and was a Navy veteran. Pallbearers will be Justin Matthews, Terry Bennett, Toby Matthews, Shan Scott and Colton Scott.
Survivors include his wife, Veta Matthews of Gardendale; sons, Gary Matthews of Gardendale and Jeff Matthews of Alvarado; daughter, Pat Bennett of Gardendale; a brother,Odie Matthews of Crews; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Marilyn Bailey
ODESSA — Marilyn White Bailey, 64, of Odessa, died January 15, 2000 at Odessa Regional Hospital.
Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Hubbard-Kelly Chapel with the Rev. Clydell Chapman officiating. Burial will follow at 4:30 p.m. in Snyder cemetery.
Mrs. Bailey was born in Big Spring on October 27, 1935. She came to Odessa in 1942 from Big Spring. She worked for First National Bank for 15 years and also worked for Texas Bank for 5 years. She was a Baptist.
Survivors include her sons, Terry Bailey and Brian Bailey, both of Odessa; two brothers Donald White and James White, both of Odessa; and 3 grandchildren.

Jose Flores
ODESSA — Jose Flores, 44, of Odessa died Friday, January 14, 2000 at the New Horizon Nursing Home.
Rosary will be said 7 p.m. Monday at Martinez Funeral Home. Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father Fidelo Lugo officiating. Interment will follow at Rosehill cemetery. Arrangements by Martinez Funeral Home.
Visitation will be 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday, 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday and 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday at Martinez Funeral Home.
Mr. Flores was born July 1, 1955 in Odessa to Tomasita Galindo and Charles Flores who are both deceased.
He was a body painter at Manuel’s Body Shop.
Survivors include his son, Martin Gutierrez of Odessa; three daughters, Mary Jo Garza of Odessa, Tammie Jo Estella of Odessa, Beatrice Martinez of Midland; four brothers, Carlos Flores of Abilene, Manuel Flores of Odessa, Ramon Flores of Odessa, Nicolas Flores of Odessa; four sisters, Rosa Quiroz of Edinburg, Lupe Barrera of Atlanta, Ga., Joann Flores of Odessa, Sandy Flores of Odessa; and 9 grandchildren.
Belle Higgs Million
Belle Higgs Million was born March 15, 1906, in Gilmer, Texas, to Charlie and Lula Reynolds. She passed away January 15, 2000, at Deerings Nursing Home. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin W. Higgs in 1969; a son, Earl E. Higgs in 1994; a daughter, Carmela Palmer in 1974; and a grandson, Earl E. Higgs Jr. in 1994.
Graveside services are set for 2 p.m. Monday, January 17, 2000, at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Officiating will be Rev. Robert Bratcher of Mission Dorado Baptist Church.
Survivors include her grandson, Richard Palmer and wife, Gail, of Eastland; granddaughters, Rosalita Vessels and husband, Volley, of Odessa; Sue Elliot and husband, Bruce, of Gardendale; Brenda Gatlin and husband, Terry, of Marina, Ariz.; and Glenna Anderson of Odessa; brother, Oscar Reynolds and wife, Vera, of Shawnee, Okla.; 21 great-grandchildren, and 38 great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Darrell Rhodes
Darrell Rhodes was born June 15, 1956, in Pampa, Texas, to Jack and Georgia (Gilbert) Rhodes. He was reared and educated in Snyder and Monahans, Texas. Darrell was a self-employed independent catastrophe insurance adjuster and traveled from coast to coast as required. He was a member of the National Association of Catastrophe Adjusters (NACA) and Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA).
He married
Penny Romell in Fort Worth, Texas on September 9, 1999.
Mr. Rhodes died at their home Thursday, January 13, 2000.
Mr. Rhodes is survived by his wife, Penny; his parents, Jack and Georgia Rhodes; his brother, Richard Rhodes; his sister, Kathy Barnes; his nieces and nephews, Christi, Laura, Taylor and Jarrod Barnes; Allison and Jon Rhodes; Ashley, Jacob, Aaron, Dylan, Chase and Krystin Romell; Ben, Laura Kathryn, Luke and Sam Lancaster; Tyler and Tanna Anderson; and a lifetime’s accumulation of friends.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, January 15, at Ellis Funeral Home. Funeral services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Monday, January 17, 2000, in Ellis Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor E. H. "Sonny" Conaster officiating. Graveside services will be 4 p.m. Monday in Monahans Memorial cemetery under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home.

Jack Vanderburg
ODESSA — Jack Vanderburg was born Jan. 15, 1917, in Cooper. He passed away Jan. 13, 2000, at the Parks Methodist Retirement Center.
Masonic graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, 2000, at Sunset Memorial Gardens with Dr. Mark Riley of Immanuel Baptist Church officiating.
Mr. Vanderburg came to Odessa after serving in the Army during World War II. He married
Robbie Jo Bush Sept. 14, 1946. He was a carpenter and a member of the Masonic Lodge # 955 and also a member of Immanuel Baptist Church.
Jack left many good memories and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Survivors include his wife, Robbie Jo Vanderburg of 0dessa; his sons, Danny and his wife, Mary, and Keith Vanderburg, all of Odessa; daughters, Ann Davis and her husband, Jerry, and Jan Munn and her husband, Pat, of Odessa; brother, Harry Vanderburg of Odessa; sisters, Hattie Wilson and Charlene Cooper, both of Odessa, and Retha Coleman of Gun Barrel City; nine grandchildren, Lance, Jerrod and Jeremy Davis, Chad Bell, James Munn, Jenny Munn, Blaine, Nathan and Misty Vanderburg; two step-grandchildren, Laura Speegle and Tom Munn; five great-grandchildren; and two step great-grandchildren.

Rhea Dean Sanderson Bowman
SHREVEPORT LA — Rhea Dean Sanderson Bowman, 60, died at her residence in Shreveport, Louisiana, Wednesday, December 1, 1999, after a courageous battle with breast cancer.
She was born July 10, 1939, in Ada, Oklahoma. She was the only child of Mary Ellen and Walter Ray Cosby. She grew up in Wewoka, Oklahoma, and later moved to West Texas in 1957 to work at Southwestern Bell Telephone Company and then as an executive secretary at El Paso Product for 19 years. As a single mother with a teenage daughter, she was determined to further her education and returned to school at night to graduate with honors from the UTPB in 1976. Rhea, at the age of 37, then attended Bates College of Law in Houston, Texas, and received her Doctorate of Jurisprudence in 1980.
Rhea worked as an oil and gas attorney and then later secured a position in oil and gas liquidation with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation in Midland, Texas. She continued her career as a Section Chief and was selected in 1987 to head the liquidation office in Houston, Texas. She managed that office for five years and then opened another office for the FDIC in Westover, Connecticut. She was promoted to Deputy Regional Counsel in Dallas, Texas and was one of the only three women at the executive level of the FDIC legal division nationwide.
She held law licenses in Texas, Colorado, New York, Washington D.C., and was licensed to appear before the United States Supreme Court. At the age of 56, she studied and sat for the Bar exam in Louisiana and passed all nine sections. At the time of her death, she was on the roster and being considered for selection as a Federal Administrative Law Judge.
She was considered a mentor and friend by many of her peers and associates and was greatly admired for her ability to handle problems and make decisions. Rhea was both loved and admired by her employees and fellow attorneys.
She is preceded in death by her father, Walter Ray Cosby.
She is survived by her mother Mary Ellen Cosby of Odessa, her daughter Cynthia Kuykendall and her husband Mike, and their children Jennifer and Michael; her husband Ron Bowman and his three children Graham, Lindsey and Courtney.
She was buried December 3, 1999, at Temple Beth El cemetery in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Odessa. She was a formidable person and her memory will continue to live on through the lives of the many people she touched both privately and professionally.
