Janice Wells Johnson
ODESSA — Janice Wells Johnson, of Odessa, entered into eternal rest Nov. 22, 1999.
Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. today at Sunset Memorial Gardens with Rev. Johnny Thomason officiating. Funeral services under the direction of Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.
Janice was born Jan. 15, 1924, in Durant, Okla., to Herman and Lavonia Wells. She married
W.H. "Dee" Johnson in November of 1952.
Janice graduated from Southeastern State University in Durant, Okla., with a degree in music. She taught elementary music in Denison for five years before moving to Odessa. She taught music with the Ector County Independent School District for 30 years, retiring in 1981.
Janice enjoyed life and was loved and respected by many family and friends. She loved gardening, dancing, and cooking (desserts were her specialty.) She and her husband spent time volunteering with the Meals on Wheels programs. She was a member of the retired teachers association and the Kappa Kappa Iota sorority. She used to play the piano for the Tri-service Lions Club lunches. Janice put together the most incredible Christmas programs while she taught elementary school.
Survivors include her husband, W.H. Johnson of Odessa; her brother and sister-in-law, Herman and Lou Wells of Odessa; her niece, Terri Lavonne Enlae of Durant, Okla.; other nieces and nephews; and a multitude of family and friends.
Janice was an inspiration to 35 years’ worth of students and touched forever the lives of those she leaves behind.
Pallbearers are Fred Phillips, Bob Harrold, Paul Warner, Wayne Ray, Bob Norman and Jay Norman.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Community Care Hospice.
Rachel Raelynn Wilson
ODESSA — Rachel Raelynn Wilson, 8, of Odessa, died Monday, Nov. 22, 1999, at Medical Center Hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints with the Bishop Spencer Thompson and the Rev. Terry Pugh officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
She was born Oct. 2, 1991, in Odessa.
Rachel was a very special little girl who was loved by many friends and family. She was always friendly and had a special smile and contagious laugh that could warm every heart around her. She always had many friends around her and loved to laugh and play. She did well at anything she tried. She was in gymnastics and loved to flip and do several gymnastic tricks. She was currently a student at the dance studio and loved to learn all the new steps.
Her favorite thing was dressing up and wearing high heels, making sure her nails were painted and wearing lipstick and glitter on her face. Rachel always wanted to look pretty and be ready for every occasion. She enjoyed playing with her sisters and her cousins. She had some special friends and they would play with their babies or play school.
Rachel brought so much joy and laughter to her mother and father and the many members of her family. She loved to attend church and loved to learn about Jesus and her Heavenly Father. She loved her teachers and was eager to learn new things. She had asthma, and although it never seemed to slow her down. It was the only thing that hindered her progress on earth. Rachel will be greatly missed but we await our reunion in Heaven. She is with our Heavenly Father and Jesus and will no longer Iive in pain.
Survivors include her parents, Mark and Carolyn Wilson of Odessa; grandparents, Ben and Martha Turpen of Midland and Robert and Carol Wilson of Odessa; great-grandmothers, Ruth Farris of Whiteoak and Mary Hoover of Midland; sisters, Sarah Anne Wilson of Odessa and Casey Renee Wilson of Odessa; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Beda Louise Larremore
ODESSA — Beda Louise Larremore, 84, of Toyah, died Tuesday, Nov. 23, 1999, at Medical Center Hospital.
Services will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bruce Abbott officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
She was born Sept. 17, 1915.
Mrs. Larremore worked for Balmorhea School District for 12 years in the cafeteria department. She was a Methodist. She was a member of Eastern Star and she really enjoyed the Tulia Senior Citizen Center.
Survivors include her daughter Martha Hobbs of Andrews; brother, Otto Renz of Toyah; sister, Pauline Barton of Dallas; two grandchildren, James "Butch" Stacy and Rusty Hobbs, both of Andrews; and one great-grandson, Seth Hobbs of Hobbs, N.M.

Leona Bryant Smith
MIDLAND — Leona Bryant Smith died Saturday, Nov. 20, 1999, at her home after a lengthy illness.
Funeral services are to be at 11 a.m. today at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Lane Boyd officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview cemetery under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home.
She was born July 25, 1898, in Midland, the younger of two children born to Molly and Frank McCormick. Her older brother, George Dee McCormick, was manager of Midland Hardware. He died in February 1970. Mrs. Smith was the first Methodist child born after the new church was built. She was a lifelong resident of Midland County and a longtime member of First United Methodist Church. She was believed to be the oldest living Midland native.
She graduated from Midland High School and Midland College in 1917. She received her bachelor of science degree in elocution from Mary Hardin College in 1918 and later in life she was honored with an honorary doctorate degree. She won the Texas speech declamation and her earned trophy is on display at Midland High School, where she was inducted into its Hall of Fame. After graduation, she returned to Midland and taught elocution in Midland and other cities in the West Texas area. She taught speech in private lessons to high school students who gave their recitals in Midland Opera House.
Leona was married
to Billy Bryant in 1936 and experienced all aspects of ranching and real estate. They owned and operated a 30-secton ranch south of Midland. Billy passed away in 1960.
An active club women, Mrs. Smith was a charter member of Midland Women’s Club, Fine Arts Club, Texas Press Women, University Women, Midland Garden Club, Play Readers, Midland County Club and the Petroleum Club.
She was married
to Col. Walter B. Smith June 12, 1971. They divided their time between their Midland home and a lakefront home at Inks Lake and a home in Shelbyville, Ky. Colonel Smith passed away in 1983.
A list of her many philantrophies include First United Methodist Church, Scott and White Hospital, Midland Memorial Hospital and Medical Center, Mary Hardin Baylor College, Midland College, Midland High School, Pineville High School in Pineville, Ky., Georgetown University, Haley Library, Museum of the Southwest, Midland Women’s Club and numerous other including many scholarships to needy students. The McCormick Gallery at Midland College was given in honor of her parents.
Mrs. Smith has been very supportive of the arts in Midland, belonging to the Midland-Odessa Symphony, Theatre Midland and many other organizations.
Her motto was to "live well, laugh often and love much" and all who knew her can attest to her practicing her belief.
She is survived by three nieces, Sarah Wylie Moore of Cedar Hill, Geneva Smith Price of Lexington, Ky., and Frances Wylie of Midland; a nephew, George Smith of Lexington, Ky.; cousins, Hugh Radney of Austin, Ridge Radney of Missouri City, Mo., May Nell Johnson of Ruidoso, N.M., Sam Vest of Monahans, D.H. Estill and Jess Ann Thomason, both of Midland. She had many, many friends who loved her dearly.
Friends and family wish to thank the caregivers for their excellent and dedicated service.

Leonarda B. Campos
ODESSA — Leonarda B. Campos, born Nov. 6, 1908, was called home by our Savior Sunday, Nov. 21, 1999.
Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. today at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Chapel. Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 612 E. 18th St., with the Rev. Bernardo Martinez officiating. Interment following in Rose Hill cemetery.
Leonarda was born in San Juan, Mexico, to Juana Dominguez and Miguel Barraza. She came to Marfa as a 2-year-old and was raised in Marfa. There she married
Francisco Campos in 1930. She raised 11 children, nine of whom are still living. She moved to Odessa in 1957 where she resided until her death.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Francisco; son, Reynaldo; and daughter, Betty.
She is survived by her three sons and daughters-in-law, Dolores and Aurora Campos of El Paso, Mario and Sonia Campos of Rosenburg and Joe and Elena Campos of Odessa; six daughters and sons-in-law, Olivia Luna, Nina and Beto Alvarez, Janie and Manuel Tapia, Josie and Ernesto Ramos and Margie and Buddy Ramirez, all of Odessa, and Anita and Jose Gonzalez of San Antonio; 33 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren; sister, Manuela Dominguez of Fort Davis; and numerous nieces and nephews.
"A devoted mother and grandmother, you will be greatly missed. You have taken a part of us with you, but at the same time, part of you will remain in our hearts forever.

Isabel Herrera Lopez
ODESSA — Isabel Herrera Lopez was born Dec 5, 1909, in Del Rio to Guillermo and Tomasa Bartera Herrera. She passed away on Nov. 20, 1999, at her residence.
A funeral Mass was said at 9 a.m. Monday, Nov. 22, 1999, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Father Francis Frey officiating. A rosary was said at 7 p.m. Sunday night at the church. Burial was at 4 p.m. Monday at the Melvin cemetery in Melvin. Services were under the direction of Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.
Mrs. Lopez grew up in Melvin. She married
Antonio Lopez on Oct. 30, 1943. They lived in Boerne. He preceded her in death June 16, 1962.
She moved with her daughters to San Angelo so that her girls could attend college. She has been a resident of Odessa for the last 27 years. She was a member of the Guadalupanas, Our Lady’s Rosary Makers, Legion of Mary and was a Eucharistic minister at St. Mary’s. She was known as "Grandma" to many people in Odessa.
Survivors include her daughters, Maria Julieta Caballero and her husband Ricardo, and Rosemaria L. Mendez and her husband Hector, all of Odessa; her brother, Dr. Luciano B. Herrera of Edinburg; sisters, Santiaguita H. Lopez of San Angelo, Conception H. Martinez of San Antonio, Santa Ana H. Martinez and Santos H. Vasquez, both of Melvin, Herlinda H. Conway of Brady and Julia A. Lira of Dallas; nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
The family requests donations be made to the Legion of Mary at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Odessa.
