Dr. Radames Martinez Sr.
ODESSA — Dr. Radames Martinez Sr. peacefully went home to be with Jesus Christ, his Lord and Savior, on the evening of Tuesday, Nov. 16, 1999, at Medical Center Hospital, after a long illness.
He and his family moved to Odessa in 1964, after emigrating from Cuba, which had recently been overtaken by communism. They left everything behind, except for the clothes they wore and a few personal belongings.
Dr. Martinez was born in Matanzas, Cuba, on Oct. 1, 1922, the only child of Tomas and Ana Martinez. He married
Lilia Villate Manresa on July 24, 1942. He was educated in Havana and acquired his doctor of medicine degree from the University of Havana Medical School, where he eventually held the teaching position of Chair of Professor of Orthopedic Surgery. After arriving in the United States, he practiced briefly at the V.A. hospitals in Miami, Fla., and in Tucson, Ariz. He practiced in Odessa until 1992 and then retired to Miami.
He is survived by his wife, Lilia; by their seven children Lilia, Lupe, Radames Jr., Roberto, Raymond, Reynaldo and Linda; by their seventeen grandchildren; and by two great-grandchildren.
His wife of 57 years has known him as a faithful, loving and devoted husband. His children know him as "Papi:" provider, leader, honest, truthful, reliable, trustworthy, counselor, generous to a fault. He was a most wonderful father and role model for his family and others who knew him.
Since his arrival in Odessa, he has had a positive influence throughout the breadth and width of the medical community. He treated everyone with respect and consideration, whether they were sweeping the halls of the hospital or performing surgery. His kindness flowed over the social boundaries that separate most others. He genuinely cared for each of his patients — whether they had merely stubbed a toe or had suffered multiple major fractures. He agonized over the fate of his patients and personally rejoiced in their recovery. He always took the time to greet all persons in his path and to stop and teach and counsel those around him who were in need and who would listen.
A finer husband, a better father, or a kinder physician would be most difficult to find in this world. We will all miss his presence here greatly. But because of the sacrifice of Christ on behalf of mankind, we can rest assured that those who believe in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior will be reunited with Dr. Martinez at the time of their own physical deaths.
Public visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 18, 1999, in the Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
