Raymond J. Donovan, M.D.
HOUSTON — Raymond J. Donovan, M.D., 73, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999, in Houston. He was born in Staten Island, N.Y., and graduated from Xavier High School, New York, N.Y., and Cornell University Medical School.
He practiced in Odessa from 1978 to 1983 then returned to join the faculty of the Texas Tech Ob/Gyn Department in 1990. He had a large practice of devoted patients and was voted Teacher of the Year in 1999.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Joan DeNike Donovan; and three loving sons, Raymond, Thomas and Gerald; and five grandchildren.
He will be deeply missed by his many colleagues, friends and coworkers.
A memorial Mass will be held pending arrangements, and the date will be announced.
Donations may be made to the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Memorial fund for a Lectureship to honor Dr. Donovan.
Gussie Anna Douglas
ODESSA — Gussie Anna Douglas, 88, of Odessa, died Sunday, Oct. 17, 1999, at Medical Center Hospital.
Services will be at Johnson Chapel A.M.E., 1312 S. Jackson Ave., with the Rev. J.T. Garnet officiating. Burial will be at Rose Hill cemetery. Arrangements by Odessa Funeral Home Angeles Memorial Chapel.
She was born May, 24, 1911, in Minerva.
Survivors include her son, Edward Adams of Amarillo; sisters, Vivian Everage of Odessa and Dorothy Sweezer of Houston; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Eunice Groesbeck
ODESSA — Eunice Groesbeck was born March 5, 1925, in Sarepta, La. She passed away Oct. 20, 1999, at Medical Center Hospital.
Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Eunice married
W.M. "Bill" Groesbeck on Feb. 15, 1944. He preceded her in death on Aug. 6, 1999.
They moved to Hobbs, N.M., in 1975. She and her husband owned and operated W.M.G. Oil Company in Hobbs.
Survivors include her sons, Don Groesbeck of Houston and Sonny Groesbeck of Tatum, N.M.; daughters, Jann Jones of Odessa and Shirley Roberts of Buda; and eight grandchildren.
Her three brothers preceded her in death.

Kayden Jayson McDonald
ODESSA — Kayden Jayson McDonald, infant son of Jayson Todd and Michelle McDonald, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 19, 1999, at Odessa Regional Hospital. He was born Oct. 19, 1999.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Jack Oden officiating. Arrangements are by Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors.
Kayden is survived by his parents, Todd and Michelle McDonald of Odessa; grandparents, Larry and Sheila Pendelton of Odessa, Nick and Diane Pappas of North Carolina, and Al and B.J. McDonald of Odessa; and great-grandmother, Mary Pendelton of Odessa; two brothers, Jayson McDonald and Cody Stanifer of Odessa; aunts, Kim Easley of Odessa, Jeri Dawn Hebert of Odessa, Heather Huddelston of North Carolina; uncles, Jimmy Pendelton of Odessa, Shawn Byford of Midland, Joey Byford of Lubbock and James Aayers of Odessa.
Essie Mae Taylor
ODESSA — Essie Mae Taylor, 80, of Odessa, died Friday, Oct. 15, 1999, at her residence.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Greater St. John Baptist Church with Elder Joe Parks officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill cemetery.
Essie Mae Taylor was born March 26, 1919, to James and Maggie Williams in Queen City. She was united in marriage to Raymond Anderson and to this union three children were born. Raymond Anderson preceded Essie Mae in death on Aug. 1, 1988.
Essie Mae received her early education in Texarkana, Texas, and later received a degree in nursing in Dallas. She moved to Odessa in 1949. She became a member of the Greater St. John Baptist Church under Pastor L. H. Hall.
Essie Mae Taylor worked for the Meither family for many years before embarking on her career as an entrepreneur. She established her own businesses: the Blue Front Cafe, The Playland Childcare Nursery, Cozy Lounge, Essie’s Drive Inn and a unit of apartment complexes. Essie Taylor was the first single black lady to own a business in Odessa. She remained in business until her health failed.
Her memories will be treasured by her three children, Darlene Rigsby, Arthur Ray Anderson Sr., Dorothy Mae Parks and a devoted grandchild, Alma Marie Batie, all of Odessa; two brothers, Colombus Williams of Texarkana, Texas, and Roscoe Williams of Dallas; one sister, Annie Mae Arnold of Texarkana, Texas; four more grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a host of loving nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.

Ethel Williams
WICKETT — Ethel Williams, 88, of Monahans, a homemaker, died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 1999, at Azle Manor Nursing Home in Azle, after many years as an Alzheimer’s patient.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 21, 1999, at First Baptist Church of Wickett with the Rev. Dr. Allie Balko officiating. Graveside services will be at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at the Eola cemetery in Eola.
She was born Sept. 24, 1911, in Comanche County and was a longtime resident of Wickett. She married
John Williams July 26, 1936, in Breckenridge. She was a homemaker and a Baptist.
A graduate of Tarleton State University with a major in home economics, Ethel used her talent in her own home and in her community. In 1971, she was honored as the Ward County Homemaker of the Year, having served as president of the Wickett Home Demonstration Club. She was known for her homemade apple and pecan pies, baked fresh from their own fruit trees, as well as sewing, crafts and gardening.
For many years, Ethel worked at Luckie’s Grocery in Wickett, in addition to helping her husband with their rental property in Wickett. Ethel was the organist for Wickett First Baptist Church. She also taught Sunday school and was active in all the activities of the church. Ethel will be remembered for her helpfulness and her pleasant personality which earned her the nickname "Happy."
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Williams, Oct. 14, 1995.
Survivors include her son, Waymon D. Williams of Azle; brother, Elmer Luckie of Comanche; sisters, Jackie Pittman of Plainview, Bertha Maddoux of San Angelo and Lorene Rasco of Levelland; two grandchildren, Kenneth Williams and Tina Williams, both of Dallas.

H.C. "Joe" Luther
MIDLAND — Beloved husband, father, grandfather and dear friend H.C. "Joe" Luther was called home to heaven on October 10, 1999, at his residence.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 13, at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church with the Rev. Richard Edwards officiating. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park cemetery under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home.
Visitation is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Ellis Funeral Home Chapel.
Joe was born in Hattiesburg, Miss., on Aug. 15, 1924, to Herman and Iona Luther. He graduated from Slidell High School and joined the Air Force and flew bombing missions over Italy in World War II. He married
Corrine Covington in San Antonio March 6, 1948.
He graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a degree in geology.
Joe worked for Chevron as a geologist, retiring after 28 years to go out on his own to do consulting work.
Giving of himself generously, he lived and loved life with all his heart. He volunteered at the Airport’s Information Booth and the Confederate Air Force Museum, being instrumental in bringing recognition to the Tuskegee Airmen of World War II. Other countless hours were spent as a board member and a volunteer at the American Heart Association in the "Jump Rope for Heart" program. He volunteered at Meals On Wheels, Midland Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, West Texas Geological Society and The Petroleum Museum.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Denny Luther of SlideIl; and one sister, Burl Bauerle of Hammond, La.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Corrine; his daughters, Cheree Smith and husband, Billy, Sheila McCright and husband, Dan, all of Midland and Lisa Jolley of Scottsdale, Ariz.; his nine grandchildren, Jessica and Travis Smith, Michelle Watts, Blake and Natalie Boyce, all of Midland, Brent Boyce and Cody Jolley, both of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Shane Freeman of Dallas; and two great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers are Mike Jolley, Larry Hambek and his grandsons, Cody Jolley, Brent Boyce, Blake Boyce and Shane Freeman.
