Evelyn was the wife of Macon Henry who preceded her in death in 1986. She was also preceded in death by her beloved friend, Bob Dockrey, in 1997.
She left this life suddenly but peacefully at her home in Odessa on Sunday, March 14, 1999.
"Home" to Evelyn was always Forest, Miss., where she was born and raised along with four sisters. They were a very close family and she was devoted to them. She was the daughter of Lawrence and Onie Sessions She attended Good Hope School. She married
Macon Henry, started her own family and moved to Odessa in 1954. Longtime residents, he worked for Glenn Rex Inc., and she worked over the years at several restaurants prior to buying her own restaurant, which she named "Evelyn’s Café." She had many longtime customers who brought in various interesting memorabilia for display at the cafe, from mounted longhorns to a huge hornet’s nest and license plates from all over the country dating back to the 1920s.
She was delighted when a former Odessa resident wrote her a letter and sent her a copy of a country and western song he had written and recorded in Nashville, Tenn. He titled it "Evelyn’s Café," in honor of his memories of visiting her cafe with his father as a youth.
She had a son and three daughters who all graduated from Odessa High School.
After the death of her husband, Macon, in 1986, she devoted herself to the café. Upon her retirement in 1995, she enjoyed working in her yard, feeding the wild birds and keeping in touch with family and friends. She was a faithful member of Sunset Heights Baptist Church, where she served on several committees and especially enjoyed tending to the Church’s flowerbeds and trees.
She read extensively and was very interested in political issues. She had a soft Southern accent that immediately endeared her to those who met her. She was proud and independent with strong beliefs and opinions and a deep loyalty to her family and friends. She had a truly wonderful sense of humor and loved to share a good laugh.
She was an avid collector of antiques, coins and gemstones.
Evelyn was devoted to Christ and to her church, Sunset Heights Baptist Church. For that reason, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to her church, or the charity of one’s choosing. In lieu of tears and sadness at her passing, she would want you to remember your happy times together.
