Mary "Cuca" Madrid

MIDLAND — Mary "Cuca" Madrid, 50, died Saturday, Sept. 18, 1999, at her residence, following a lengthy illness.

She was born July 4, 1949, in Odessa to Antonio and Erminia Madero Sr., where she was raised and educated. She met and later married Lupe Madrid in Midland in 1970. She attended the University of Texas of the Permian Basin in Odessa where she received her bachelor’s degree and later her master’s degree in education. She was a bilingual teacher at Sam Houston Elementary, then at Lamar until May 1999. She was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church.

She was a very loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend. She was a very dedicated teacher.

Mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 21, 1999, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church with Father Art Flores officiating. Burial will be at Resthaven North Memorial Park cemetery. The funeral arrangements are under the direction of Reyes-Garcia Funeral home.

Her father, Antonio Madero Sr., preceded her in death in 1992.

Survivors include her husband, Guadalupe (Lupe) Madrid of Midland; daughter, Celina Hernandez and her husband, Frank Hernandez, of Midland; sons, Nat Madrid and Joshua Madrid, both of Midland; mother, Erminia Madero of Odessa; sisters, Emma Acosta, Ramona Leon, Sylvia Bernal, Edia Garand, Beatriz Madero and Maggie Gomez, all of Odessa; brothers, Antonio Madero Jr., Armando Madero Sr., Jesse Madero and Jose Luis Madero, all of Odessa, and Alonzo Madero of Giddings; grandsons, Michael and Patrick Hernandez of Midland; 32 nephews and nieces; and 17 great-nephews and great-nieces.

Pallbearers will be John Anthony Madero, Ben Rivera, Joseph Rivera, Ramses Hernandez, Daniel Carrasco, Billy Bohannan, Christopher Ray Garza and John Adrian Arenivas.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the staff of Lamar Elementary School.

Memorials can be directed to The MISD Bilingual Education Program. Funeral arrangements are by Reyes-Garcia Funeral Home

Richard Brown

ODESSA — Richard Brown was born on October 19, 1910, in Post, to Charles S. and Jewell Brown. He passed away at his home Sunday, Sept. 19, 1999.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 22, 1999, at Sunset Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Bill Heggemeier officiating.

Masonic graveside services will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Brown was born in Post and was raised in Abilene. He graduated from Abilene High School in 1929. After high school, he attended Gail Business College in Abilene.

On July 31, 1936, he married Vera May Boyd. They moved to Odessa in 1938.

Mr. Brown went to work as a mail clerk before joining the Army in 1942. He continued with the U.S. Postal Service after World War II and retired in 1970. He was active in the American Legion, the Masonic Lodge and his church, First United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Vera May Boyd Brown.

Survivors include his son, Randall Brown and his wife, Tammy, of Odessa; his daughters, Dee Andrews and her husband, Ben, of Murchison and Pam Wilson and her husband, Lonnie, of Austin; brother, Jim Brown of Dallas; his grandchildren, Bryan Chad Vinson, James David Vinson, Candee Vetter, Randall Charles Brown, Mollie Kay Naylor and Katherine Renee Brown.

The family requests that memorials be made to the American Stroke Association, 7272 Greenville Ave, Dallas, Texas, 75231, or Community Care Hospice, 3641 N. Dixie Blvd., Odessa, Texas, 79762.

Services are under direction of Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.

Barbara Virginia Hennon

GRAND SALINE — Barbara Virginia Hennon, 60, of Grand Saline, died Sunday, Sept. 19, 1999, at her residence.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Main Street Baptist Church. Burial will be at Woodside cemetery. Arrangements by Bartley Funeral Home.

She was born Nov. 13, 1938, in Lubbock, the daughter of the late Alvin A. and Ocie Lea McCollister Ferguson.

Barbara was a member of Main Street Baptist Church and the Grand Saline Study Club. Barbara was a retired school teacher with 35 years of service.

She is survived by her husband of 39 years, Bill Hennon of Grand Saline; a son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Wendi Hennon of Monroe, Ga.; daughter and son-in-law, Lori and Terry Bragg of Tyler; two sisters, Sharron Aishman and Glennabel Hays; and four grandchildren.

Mattie L. Sams

ODESSA — Mattie L. Sams, 91, passed away Sunday, Sept. 19, 1999.

She was born on August 10, 1908, in Lea County. A longtime resident of Odessa, she was a homemaker and a Baptist.

Mrs. Sams was preceded in death by her husband, T.B. Sams, and her three brothers and six sisters.

She is survived by her son, Wilie Sams and his wife Lena Fave; daughters, Virginia Alexander and her husband John, Mattie Green and her husband J.W., all of Odessa; grandchildren, Charles Lee Archie and his wife Janice, Lillie Martin and her husband Charles, Lois Jones and her husband Edward, Rachel Guyton and her husband James, Carolyn Medlock, Carol Medlock and wife Marilyn, and Brenda Modlock; 12 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Martinez Funeral Home. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Martinez Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Charles Martin officiating. Burial will at Rose Hill cemetery.

Arrangements by Martinez Funeral Home.

Violeta Tanner Mahood

ODESSA — Violeta Tanner Mahood, 96, of Stamford, died Thursday, Sept. 16, 1999, at a Kerrville nursing home.

Services were at 2 p.m. Saturday at Tankersley Funeral Home Chapel with John Wendeborn officiating. Burial followed in the Highland Memorial cemetery.

Mrs. Mahood was born Dec. 12, 1902, in Aspermont, to Joseph and Viola Tanner. She taught school, mainly in Stonewall County from 1918 to 1925.

She married Robert F. Mahood in 1925 and began freelance writing for the Abilene Reporter News and also had her own radio program.

She was also a Camp Fire Girl leader.

She worked for the Stamford Leader and the Stamford American, becoming file associate editor in 1945.

She was also the correspondent for newspapers in Abilene, Dallas, Fort Worth, Wichita Falls and both wire services.

From 1959 to 1962 she worked with the public relations department at Hardin-Simmons University and also as a feature writer with the Wichita Falls Record News.

From 1962 to 1979 she worked for the Perryton Herald as editor of the Women’s Section.

She retired in 1979 and moved to Kerrville in 1983 where she continued freelance writing and photography and was church historian and church photographer for Trinity Baptist Church.

She wrote her column "Even as you and I" for both the Stamford and Perryton newspapers.

She was an honorary member of Beta Sigma Phi and Eta Alpa Alpha.

She was an honorary member of the Girl Scouts of America and Texas Congress of Parents and Teachers.

She was a life member of the West Texas Press Association. She was a member in Women in Communications Association, past president of the Texas Press Women Association, and was the publisher of the monthly West Texas Press magazine for 12 years when she was secretary of that organization.

She was honored as Woman of the Year by the Exchange Club in Stamford and also by the B& PW Club in Perryton and received numerous first-place awards for her writing of the feature page, columns and photography at both state and national level while in Stamford and Perryton.

She was active in the Women’s Club in Kerrville and was a member of the Stamford VIP.

She was active in her church and a Sunday school teacher most of her adult life.

She was a member of the Trinity Baptist Church in Kerrville.

She is survived by three children, Betty McClellan of Kerrville, Margaret Wendeborn and husband, J.C., of Sagerton and Robert Mahood and wife, Sue, of Odessa; 10 grandchildren, Susan Parker of Bryan, Bob McClellan of Houston, Bill McClellan of Big Spring, Pam Austin of Abilene, Patricia Fogle of Dallas, Kathy McPherson of Odessa, John Wendeborn of Stamford, Mark Wendeborn and Jay Wendeborn, both of Farmington, N.M., and Lee Wendeborn of Las Cruces, N.M.; 26 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

The family requests memorials be sent to The West Texas Rehabilitation Center, 4601 Hartford, Abilene, Texas or the Stamford Carnegie Library, 600 E. McHarg, Stamford, Texas 79553.
