William H. "Bill" Tucker
BIG SPRING — William H. "Bill" Tucker, 79, of Odessa, formerly of Big Spring, died Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2000, at a local hospital.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 23, 2000, at Mt. Olive Memorial Park with Dr. Claude Craven, retired Baptist minister, officiating.
He was born April 17, 1921, in Breckenridge and married
Helen K. Hunt in June 1970 in Lovington, N.M. She preceded him in death Feb. 5, 1997.
Bill served with the United States Marine Corps during World War II and the Korean conflict. He was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received while serving in the South Pacific. He was a Presbyterian and a member of the American Legion Post 470 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2013.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Deanna and Pearlie Wilson of San Antonio and Theresa and James Kincaid of Odessa; seven grandchildren, Roy Swancy of Italy, Texas, Larry Swancy of Jacksonville, Fla., Donna Buchwald of San Antonio, Nancy Murray of Dallas, Benjamin Kling of Brownsboro, Jeni Vipperman and Steven Scott, both of Odessa; 13 great-grandchildren; and one sister-in-law, Evelyn Tucker of Brownwood.
The family will receive visitors from 5 to 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 22, 2000, at the funeral home.

Armando Mendez Acosta
ODESSA — Armando Mendez Acosta, 42, of Odessa, died Sunday, Sept. 17, 2000, at Medical Center Hospital.
He was born Sept. 26, 1957, in Madera, Chihuahua, Mexico. He was Catholic.
Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father Gilbert Rodriguez officiating. Rosary will be at 7 p.m. today at Odessa Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be at Rose Hill cemetery. Arrangements by Odessa Funeral Home.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jose Dolores Acosta and Maria Nieves Acosta; sister, Rita Nelia Acosta; and grandparents, Carmen Acosta and Paubla Munoz.
Survivors include his wife, Hilda Bejarano Acosta of Odessa; sons, Armando Acosta Jr. and Emmanuel Acosta, both of Odessa; daughter, Crystal Acosta Flores of Odessa; brothers, Ismael Acosta of Cuauhtemoc, Mexico, Jose Acosta, Alvaro Acosta and Arturo Acosta, all of Odessa; and sister, Maria Amparo Acosta of Cuauhtemoc.
Julia Ann Hartman
ODESSA — Julia Ann Hartman, 67, of Odessa, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 14, 2000, at Medical Center Hospital. She was born on Oct. 5, 1932, to Preston and Annetta Bailey. Julia grew up in Santa Anna and attended Texas Women’s University.
Julia is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Tom and Lanelle Bailey of Granbury; her daughter and son-in-law, Debra and Joe Hough of Odessa; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Steve and Lisa Hartman of Opelousas, La., Gary and Francine Hartman, David and Robin Hartman, and Daniel Hartman, all of Austin. She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren, Mary Hartman of New Orleans, La., Stephen Michael Hartman of Opelousas, La., and Brian Hartman, Matt Hartman, Joseph Hough, Rachel Hough, John Hough and Wendy Ballard, all of Austin.
Julia was an active member in her church, the Sixth and Jackson Church of Christ, and in the local community. She served for many years as a dedicated volunteer in the Make-A-Wish Foundation, her church prison ministry, the Odessa Rape Crisis Center, and was very active in the Police Athletic League, Volunteers In Policing, Planned Parenthood and Harmony Home Children’s Advocacy Center of Odessa, from which she recently retired. Julia worked tirelessly for her church, community, and family and loved them all dearly. She will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved her.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 18, 2000, at Sixth and Jackson Church of Christ in Odessa with Don Turskey officiating. Julia will be buried in her hometown of Santa Anna at 5 p.m. Monday under the direction of Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in Julia’s memory to the Odessa Police Athletic League and Harmony Home Children’s Advocacy Center.
Louise "Aunt Lou" Weathersby
ODESSA — Louise "Aunt Lou" Weathersby, 82, of Odessa passed away Saturday, Sept. 16, 2000, at Medical Center Hospital. She was born March 13, 1918, in Brownwood.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Sunset Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Robert Scofield officiating.
Mrs. Louise married
A.B. "Shorty" Weathersby in March of 1939. They moved to Odessa in the early 1950s from Brownwood. She was a member of Bethany Christian Church for over 40 years. She loved to spoil her nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William Perry Lynch and Gladys DeMorrow Lynch; her husband, "Shorty" Weathersby; and brothers, Kenneth, Bill and James Lynch.
She is survived by one sister, Bettie Thomas of Odessa; three nieces who she thought of as daughters, Connie Moonen of Gardendale, Carol Theesfield and Carrie Nelson, both of Odessa. She is also survived by several other nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and two great-great-nieces and nephews.

Ben F. Gearhart Jr.
MARFA — Dr. Ben F. Gearhart Jr. passed away at his home Sept. 12, 2000. A memorial service will be held Sept. 15, 2000 at 2 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church. Memorial Funeral Home in Marfa is in charge of arrangements.
He was born in Fort Worth on Oct. 21, 1916. He attended school in Marfa and was a graduate of Texas A & M University in 1939 with degrees in animal husbandry and veterinary medicine.
Dr. Gearhart was first employed by the Texas Sanitary and Livestock Commission. During World War II, he served six years with the Army and attained the rank of major. Following the war, he opened a veterinary clinic in Marfa and practiced until ranching became his full-time responsibility in both Texas and Montana.
Dr. Gearhart served as a Jeff Davis County Commissioner for 17 years. He was a director at the Marfa Production Credit Association from 1958 to 1983 and a director of the Farm Credit Bank of Texas from 1983 to 1986. In addition, he was a director of the Texas Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association and a vice president of the Southwestern Livestock Show in El Paso for many years. He and his wife were also founders of the Davis Mountain Trans-Pecos Heritage Association.
Dr. Gearhart was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ben F. Gearhart Sr.; his brother, Bill Gus Gearhart; and his wife of 59 years, Mary Martha Coffield Gearhart.
He is survived by his daughter, Martha Anne Gearhart of El Paso; his son William A. Gearhart and wife Marsha Gearhart of Valentine; his daughter, Jessica Gearhart McInnis and her husband Bill McInnis of Ganado; and three grandchildren, Ben and Rachel McInnis of Ganado and Paul B. Gearhart of Valentine. A nephew, Dr. James L. Gearhart of El Paso, and two nieces, Mary Askin of Miles City, Mont., and Sheri Gearhart of Irving also survive Dr. Gearhart.
Memorials to Dr. Gearhart may be made to the charity or organization of one’s choice.
Sonny Silvas
ODESSA — Sonny Silvas, 21, of Odessa, died Monday, Sept. 11, 2000, in Gaines County.
He was born Feb. 21, 1979, in Odessa. He worked for Kirby Robertson Sales and Service in Midland.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Latter Rain Ministries with the Rev. Craig De Armond officiating. Burial will be at Rose Hill cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Natalie C. Silvas of Odessa; daughter, Nia Avery Silvas of Odessa; mother, Gloria Vasquez and stepfather Ray Johnson of Odessa; father, Frankie Silvas and stepmother Celia Silvas of Odessa; brothers, Frankie Silvas Jr. of Odessa; stepbrothers, Chris Gonzales and Johnathan Gonzales, both of Odessa; sisters, Lisa Sandate, D.D. Sandate and Jo-Amber Vasquez, all of Odessa; stepsisters, Britney Silvas and Savanah Silvas, both of Odessa; grandparents, Celia Lujan, Chilo Munoz, Alfredo Silvas and Claudia Silvas, all of Odessa; and nieces and nephews, George Beane Jr., Savon Beane, Alshala McGruder, Marina Rodriguez and Dominick Chabera.
Pallbearers will be Jaime Juarez, Paul Pallan, Auge Ortiz, Tim Ortiz, Gerardo Carrasco, Jason Perez, Mario Hinojos and Alex Castillo.
Sonny was loved by so many people. He was a special brother, uncle, son and friend to many loved ones. Sonny was an especially wonderful husband and father. His pride and joy was his daughter Nia. Just his voice brought joy and laughter to her face. Everyone will remember Sonny as someone who loved to make people laugh. With this in mind, you will be greatly missed and loved in our hearts forever, until we meet again at Our Lord’s gates in heaven. I love you, Sonny! Your wife, Natalie.

Chella French Gonzales
ODESSA — Chella French Gonzales, 19, of Odessa, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2000, at Covenant Medical Center Hospital in Lubbock.
She was born Oct. 1, 1980, in Sidney, Mont., to Jesus and Tracy Gonzales. Chella and her family came to Odessa in 1985. She attended and graduated from Odessa High School in 1999. During her years at OHS, she was a member of the soccer team and a member of the Future Homemakers of America. After graduation, she went on to continue her education at the College of the Southwest in Hobbs, N.M. Among the many things she really enjoyed were poetry, art, music, movies, friends and family.
The family will receive friends beginning at 6 p.m. today at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. An outdoor service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 16, 2000, at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Survivors include her parents, Jesus and Tracy Gonzales of Odessa; grandparents, Albert and Cleo French of Flaxville, Mont.; great-grandmother, Nita Cromwell of Flaxville; brothers, Charles French Gonzales of Odessa and Carlos Rene Gonzales and wife Mari and daughter Andrea, all of Del Rio; 21 aunts and uncles; and a host of cousins and other family members.
Services are under the professional care of Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.
Her great love of life inspired so many. Chella, we will love you forever. Thank you for being our friend.
