Harwell Callaway Whitmire
MIDLAND — Harwell Callaway Whitmire was born Dec. 27, 1909, in Midland to M.W. and Mattie May Shelton Whitmire, early Midland County settlers. He grew up in a home on North Baird Street. The Whitmires’ farm was located near the corner of the present Wadley Avenue and Garfield Streets. While a resident of Midland, he was a member of First United Methodist Church. He graduated from Midland High School in 1928 and received a bachelor of science degree in animal husbandry from Texas A&M University in 1933.
Following college, he was employed by Gulf Oil Corporation in Iraan and then returned to Midland where he farmed and ranched in Midland and Ector Counties. From 1942 until his retirement, he operated the E.J. Neathery Ranch, located where Gardendale is now located. He and his brother also owned a ranch near Ada, Okla. In 1959, his family moved to Odessa, where he resided at the time of his death.
On February 27, 1937, he was married
to Lura Avalyn Pogue at First Presbyterian Church in Midland.
He died Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2000, at a local care facility following a lengthy illness. He was preceded in death by a son, John Perry Whitmire; by his sisters, Lenora Blackburn of Mobile, Ala., and Myrtle Golladay of Midland; and by his twin brother, M.W. Whitmire Jr. of Pueblo, Colo.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Avalyn P. Whitmire of Odessa; a son, Col. Jack N. Whitmire and his wife Nelda of Victoria; daughters, Betty W. Sumner and her husband William of Midland and Mary W. Fish and her husband Steve of Tempe, Ariz.; his grandchildren, Laura Whitmire and her husband Ron Folkes of Addison, Kelly Whitmire Bemer and her husband Mitchell of San Diego, Rae Ann Whitmire of Dallas, Sara Sumner Davidson and her husband Gregory of Spring, Nancy Sumner Pannell and her husband Jim of Midland, John Whitmire Sumner and his wife Paige of Austin, Brandon Fish, Derrick Fish and Shannon Fish, all of Tempe; and three great-grandsons, Cutler William Davidson and Peter Walker Davidson, both of Spring, and James Callaway Pannell of Midland. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews and by Fanchon Euverte and her husband Philippe of Paris, his "French daughter" who lived at the Whitmire’s home as an exchange student in 1961-62.
Graveside services have been set for 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, 2000, at Fairview cemetery in Midland with the Rev. Bill Heggemeier of First United Methodist Church of Odessa officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home.

Kimberlee Kay Brooks
SAN ANGELO — Kimberlee Kay Brooks was born Aug. 16, 2000, to Dr. Steven and Shonda Brooks of San Angelo. She died of a heart defect in her loving parents’ arms Sept. 4, 2000.
During her short 18-day life, Kimberlee brought love and smiles to all who met her. She will always be "our little angel."
Kimberlee is survived by her parents Dr. Steven and Shonda Brooks of San Angelo; maternal grandparents are Larry and Betty Bailey of Odessa; paternal grandparents are Wayne and Katherine Brooks of Odessa; aunt, Tara Bailey of Odessa; great-grandparents, Carrie Griffin, Dorothy Spann of Odessa, Jeff Brittain of Woodsboro and numerous great aunts and uncles.
Kimberlee was also loved by an "honorary" aunt and uncle Jennifer and Albert Seybert of Odessa.
We will all miss you, Angel.

Charles L. "Chuck" Garza Sr.
ODESSA — Graveside services for Charles L. "Chuck" Garza Sr., 65, of Odessa, are scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Garza died Thursday, Sept. 7, 2000, at Medical Center Hospital. He was born Nov. 23, 1934, in Bandera.
Mr. Garza came to Odessa 45 years ago from Bandera and was a retired truck driver.
Survivors include his daughters, Debbie Proctor of Odessa and Betty Thomas of Brighton, Colo.; sons, Charlie Garza Jr. of Midland and Danny Garza of Abilene; and eight grandchildren.
Services are entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
Stacia Anquionetta Jones
ODESSA — Stacia Anquionetta Jones was born to James C. Jones and Betty Y. Williams on Dec. 9, 1962. She attended and graduated from Ector High School in Odessa. She later attended Odessa College and received certification as an administrative assistant. She accepted Christ and united with the Rose of Sharon Baptist Church in 1968. She relocated to Carrolton and united with Fellowship Baptist Church where she was active in the music ministry.
Funeral services will be at noon Saturday at the Rose of Sharon Baptist Church with the Rev. J.W. Hanson, pastor of the church, officiating. Burial will be at Rose Hill cemetery. Wake will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the church.
Those left to cherish her memory are her fiance, Torrey Nelson of Carrolton; son, Quincy Randolph of Carrolton; mother, Bettye Williams and husband Edward; father, James C. Jones and wife Gale; brothers, James C. Jones Jr., Sam Majors, Edward Williams, Marcus Williams, Eric Williams and Jimmy Jones; sisters, Sharon Wade, Pamela Jones, Eboni Jones, Evelyn Williams and Rene Roberson; grandmother, Mattie Cotton; and a host of aunts, uncles and other relatives and friends.

James B. Rush
ODESSA — James B. Rush, 74, of Odessa, passed away Wednesday Sept. 6, 2000, at Medical Center Hospital. He was born Aug. 19, 1926, in Clarksburg, W. Va., to Eugene and Nellie Rush.
Mr. Rush moved to Odessa in 1935 from West Virginia. He was a sergeant in the Army during World War II. He married
Frankie Lou Gray on May 25, 1947, in McCamey. He worked for Phillips Petroleum Company for 38 years, spending all of his employment here in the Permian Basin. He loved to fish and to go camping with his family. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and St. Charles Men’s Club.
The family will receive friends beginning at 6 p.m. today at Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors. Funeral mass will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, 2000, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Father Frances Frey officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Survivors include his wife, Frankie Lou Gray Rush of Odessa; three daughters, Kathy and husband Eddie Lane, Debby and husband Paul Litz and Patty and husband Ronnie White, all of Odessa; grandchildren, Rodney White, James and Mellisa White and Meagan White, all of Odessa; great-grandchildren, Cody and Mishala White of Odessa; two sisters, Eleanor Lovelace and Cathy Giddens and husband Sam, all of Marble Falls; brother-in-law, Eddie K. Harold Joe Smith
ODESSA — Joe Smith, 73, of Odessa, died Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2000, at Memorial Hospital and Medical Center. He was born May 22, 1927, in Eastland. He was a graduate of Eastland High School and served with the Army during World War II. He married
Bettye Joe Price on June 1, 1952, in Eastland, and they moved to Odessa that same year. He was a lineman for Southwestern Bell Telephone for 34 years, retiring in 1986, and was a member of Kingston Avenue Baptist Church and the Telephone Pioneers.
Survivors include his wife, Bettye of Odessa; sons, Stephen G. Smith and his wife, Keira, and Gregory A. Smith and his wife, Elaine, all of Odessa; and daughter, Sara L. Lange and her husband, Andy, of Odessa. He is also survived by grandchildren, Keena Traylor, Kasha Urban and her husband, Fred, Jesamy Smith, Toni Smith, Kevin Hughes and his wife, Deborah, Leah Lange and Lisa Lange; great-grandchildren, Trey and Tara Urban; and sisters, Nina Nichols of Odessa and Betty Fay Smith of Midland.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, 2000, at Kingston Avenue Baptist Church with the Rev. John Taylor officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Edna G. Barton
EL PASO — Edna G. Barton was born March 31, 1917, in Ponder to Tyra C. Hunt and Flora M. "Childers" Hunt. She was reared and educated in Plainview. On Dec. 23, 1934, she married
Fred D. Barton in Plainview.
Ms. Barton died Sept. 4, 2000, at a local nursing home.
Services have been scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday at Kaster-Maxon Futrell Funeral Home with the Rev. Danny Moon, grandson, of First Baptist Church in Redondo Beach, Calif., officiating. Interment will follow at Restlawn cemetery. Local arrangements were made at Ellis Funeral Home.
Edna was preceded in death by her husband, Fred D. Barton; her father, Tyra C. Hunt; and her mother, Flora Hunt.
She is survived by her two daughters, Minnie M. Moon of Midland and Carolyn R. Clower of Albuquerque, N.M.; her son, David L. Barton of Odessa; her sister, Martha L. Loyd of Colorado Springs, Colo.; her 11 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Gene W. Harrison
ODESSA — Services for Gene W. Harrison, 80, of Odessa, were at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 2, 2000, at Hubbard-Kelly Chapel with the Revs. Dr. Bill Percy, L.D. Green and Owen Sharp officiating. Burial was at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Harrison died Thursday, Aug. 31. 2000, at Deerings Nursing Home. He was born Jan. 16, 1920, in Caddo. He married
Dorothy Matlock Sept. 21, 1941, in Breckenridge.
Mr. Harrison first came to Odessa in 1950 and traveled with the oilfield from boom to boom. He moved back to Odessa in 1977 when he retired from Reading and Bates Offshore Company where he had worked as a pump supervisor on Offshore Platform #9. Through the years, Gene had worked for nearly every major drilling company in the West Texas area and as far north as Montana and as far east as Mississippi.
Gene will be missed not only by all of his friends at Vine Baptist Church, but also by all those who came in contact with him on a daily basis. He always had a friendly smile and a wave of the hand ready even for a total stranger.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Harrison of Odessa; son, Stephen Harrison of Odessa; daughter-in-law, Deborah Harrison of Odessa; granddaughter, Heather Eubanks of Odessa; grandson, Jason Harrison of Odessa; two great-grandchildren; three nephews; and eight great-nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the Community Care Hospice for all their help and support and extend special thanks to Manuel and Brenda. But no amount of thanks can be given to account for the amount of love and support that was given by Deborah Harrison in the long hours she spent caring for and nursing Gene. She was a light in his life, which he cherished and loved. He was proud to let everyone know she was his "favorite" daughter-in-law.
