Ruth C. Farris
Ruth C. Farris, 80, of Longview, formerly of Odessa, died Thursday, July 20, 2000, at Good Shepherd Medical Center in Longview. She was born September 3, 1919, in Muskogee, Oklahoma, to Jerry and Martha Campbell.
Ruth moved to Longview in 1995, where she resided with her sister, Winifred Rutland. She was a licensed beautician and a licensed vocational nurse. She taught Sunday school and was a former president of the Ladies Auxiliary.
Ruth wrote poetry and was an inspirational person. She was loved by all who knew her and will be missed greatly.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, July 24, 2000, at First United Pentecostal Church in Odessa, with speakers, including, the Revs. J.T. Pugh and Terry Pugh, both of Odessa and A.D. Spears of Longview.
Survivors include her daughter, Carol Ann Wilson of Odessa; one sister Winifred Campbell Rutland of White Oak; one grandson, Mark W. Wilson of Odessa; three granddaughters, Marcia Weddel of Longview; Elizabeth Parekh of Odessa; Laura Goodwin of the Dallas area; eleven great-grand children and one great-great grandson.
Her husband, Mark D. Farris, a son, Jerry D. Farris and her great-granddaughter, Rachel Wilson, preceded her in death. She leaves a host of Pentecostal brothers, sisters and friends.
Services are under the care of Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.
Donald Russell Roach
Donald Russell Roach passed away Saturday, July 22, 2000, at his home in Odessa. He was born Jan. 26, 1929, in Wink to Grandville D. and Leona Maxine Roach.
He was a gunnery sergeant with the U.S. Marine Corps from 1944 to 1947 and 1950 to 1968, serving in World War II in the Central and South Pacific. He also served in Korea from 1952 to 1953 and in Vietnam from 1966 to 1967.
In between the wars, he also served in Japan, Lebanon, Thailand, Alaska, Okinawa and the Philippines.
Graveside services for Mr. Roach will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 24, 2000, at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Survivors include his sons, Russell Roach of Odessa and Keith Roach of Corinth; daughter, Donna Meiz of Greenwood; brother, Bobby Roach of Odessa; sister, Arlene Baker of Odessa; nephew, Rory Roach and his wife, Cindy, of Odessa; niece, Jo Scott and her husband, Steve, of Odessa; great-niece and nephew, Jerrica and Kyle Roach of Odessa and six grandchildren.
John Sliney
ODESSA — Services for John Sliney, 68, of Odessa, are scheduled at noon Friday at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home with burial at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Sliney died Friday, July 14, 2000, from complications of cancer. He was born during the Depression in Brockton, Mass., a suburb of Boston, and came to Texas in the mid-1950s courtesy of the United States Air Force.
After serving a three-year tour of duty in Korea, he moved to Waco, where he received his honorable discharge.
He then went to work as a reporter for the daily newspaper there for several years before accepting a similar position in Odessa. He was hired at the Odessa American and rose from the ranks of cub reporter to city editor in his nearly two decades at the newspaper.
In the late 1970s, he left the Odessa American and accepted a position as an investigator for noted Odessa criminal-defense lawyer Warren Burnett.
He was affiliated with the Ector County Democratic Party.
Survivors include a son, John Sliney Jr. of Hereford; a daughter, Stephanie Orsini of Odessa; and four grandchildren.
Services are entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
Bill Hargis
ODESSA — Bill "Peewee" Hargis, 75, of Odessa, died Saturday, July 15, 2000, at Medical Center Hospital.
He was born May 17, 1925, in Davenport, Okla. He married
Dorothy Brewer Dec. 13, 1968, in Lubbock and moved to Odessa from Corpus Christi in 1976.
He was a retired repairman for Occidental Petroleum and attended Immanuel Baptist Church. He was a number one fan of helping others, enjoyed fishing, talking, and motorcycles.
He was preceded in death by his son, Robert Hargis in 1994 and grandson, Darrel Lewis in 1993.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy of Odessa; daughters and sons-in-law, Theresa Morgan and Cameron of Lubbock and Susan Holmes and Mike of Odessa; sons, David Brewer of Mission and Jim Hargis of Whiteface; and daughter-in-law Marolyn Hargis of Midland. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brother, Elmo Hargis of McAllen; and sister, Jo Floyd of Monahans.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. today in the chapel of Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors with the Rev. Dr. Mark Riley officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Fred Arvin Browning
ODESSA — Fred Arvin "Papa" Browning, 77, of Odessa, passed away Wednesday, July 12, 2000, at Medical Center Hospital.
Fred was born Oct. 14, 1922, in Flat, to Tom and Lou Browning.
He served in the Army from Jan. 27, 1943, to Nov. 11, 1945. He served his term in Normandy, Northern France, the Rhineland and Central Europe. He was a lifetime member of the V.F.W. Post No. 4372. He was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 2914. He was Baptist.
He married
Ernestine Daniel on March 13, 1954, in Lovington, N.M.
Fred worked most of his life as a painter and was known as one of the best in his trade. He owned and operated Browning Painting Service before his retirement in 1990.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ernestine, on Jan. 19, 1991; his parents; five brothers; and one sister.
He is survived by his son, Fred Browning and wife, Donna, of Odessa; daughter, Cendy Raglin and Randy Raglin of Odessa; son, David Hadeler and wife, Brenda, of Plano; daughters, Judi Worthington and Dyanne High of Ben Wheeler; brothers, Jesse Browning of Gatesville, Jack Browning of Belton and Dick Browning of California; grandchildren, Shawn and Cody Raglin, Jeremy and Brandon Browning, Ryan and Sean Hadeler, Lance Kendrick, Kim Richardson, Misty Hubbard and Wendy and Jake High; and great-grandchildren Kayla and Brent Farris, Colby Benson and Nate Kendrick.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons.
Services will be at 4 p.m. today at Hubbard Kelly Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jimmy Braswell officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Jim G. Keen
HEWITT — Jim G. Keen, 67, of Waco died Wednesday, June 14, 2000, at a local hospital.
Services were Saturday, June 17, 2000, at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Roy Marshall officiating. Burial was at Chapel Hill Memorial Park.
Mr. Keen was a former Odessa resident and was a 1950 graduate of Odessa High School.
Mr. Keen was born Sept. 17, 1932, in Morris, Okla.
He married
Shirley Pusley on Aug. 21, 1953, in Notrees. He served in the Navy during the Korean War. He received a bachelor’s and master’s degree from the University of Texas at Austin, and he also received a master’s degree from the University of Oklahoma.
Mr. Keen was district manager of the Social Security office in Waco from 1977 until his retirement in 1987.
He was a member of First Baptist Church in Hewitt where he was chairman of the Board of Deacons and taught men’s Sunday school class.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Linda Keen Graham; and his father, William Homer Keen.
Beloved son, husband, brother and father, you will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Keen of Waco; mother, Alice Keen of Dallas; daughters, Kaylinn Meeks and husband, Bryan, of Leander, Tricia Cummings and husband, Joe, of Robinson, Dianna Martino and husband, John, of McGregor, Sharon Weaver and husband, Troy, of Denver; sister, Merikay Green and husband, Jack, of Dallas; nine grandchildren; one niece, Paige Sowden, of Dallas; and one nephew, Evan Green, of Dallas.
