Faye Meek
ODESSA — Faye Meek, 86, of Odessa passed away Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, at her home.
She was born May 12, 1914, in San Antonio. She married
Clyde C. Meek on Nov. 20, 1937. Mrs. Meek lived in San Antonio where she began working as a licensed vocational nurse at the State Tuberculosis Hospital where she worked until 1954, at which time she went into private nursing. She continued private nursing until her retirement in 1989. She moved to Odessa in October 1989 where she resided until her death. She was a member of Caprock Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Meek in 1983; a son, Billy Charles Lay; five brothers; two sisters; and parents, James and Minnie Burney.
Survivors are her sons, Jimmy Clyde Meek of Belflower, Calif., and Bobby Ray Meek, retired from the U.S. Marine Corps, of Yuma, Ariz.; daughters, Judy Foreman and Ruth Harper, both of Odessa; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; nieces, Joy Lee Rittaman of Blackwell, Okla., and June Drew of Fulton; and her loyal friend and companion, "Tator."
The family will meet with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
Services will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at Caprock Baptist Church with the Rev. Jim Vaughn officiating.

Harper Peddicord II
KERMIT — Harper Peddicord II, M.D., 76, of Kermit went home Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001. He was born Dec. 21, 1924, in Fort Bragg, Calif., and grew up in Redwood City, Calif.
He attended San Jose State College before joining the Navy and was sent to the University of South Dakota in Vermillion for two years. He then attended Southwestern Medical College in Dallas and graduated in 1949. He completed his internship at Oak Knoll Naval Hospital in Oakland, Calif. He practiced medicine in Versailles, Calif., until 1951 when he relocated to Kermit to practice with the McClure-Robinson Clinic. He subsequently designed and built his own clinic where he practiced medicine for 50 years. He was a physician at the West Texas State School in Pyote for more than 25 years. He was also an adjunct assistant professor with Texas Tech University in Lubbock.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harper and Gertrude Gish Peddicord; brother, Wayne Peddicord; sister, Genevieve Duttweiler; beloved daughter, Diana Kerr; and his best friend, Mr. B (Bandit).
He is survived by his wife and love of his life, Maxine Peddicord; his five daughters, Ruth Briscoe and husband Terry of Lubbock, Benita Bradford and husband Kenneth of Arlington, Danita Perez and husband Rene of Kermit, Kimberly Arnold and husband Bobby of Kermit and Susan Talbott Cooper and husband Charlie of Midland; sister, Mary Thompson of Ocean City, Calif.; nephew, Freddy Duttweiler and wife Carol of Del Mar, Calif.; niece, Sandra Duttweiler and husband Gary of Ocean City; son-in-law, Benny Kerr of Odessa; and grandchildren, Kyla and Shay Kerr of Odessa, Mandy and Mallary Arnold of Kermit, Cody Perez of Kermit and Stephanie Talbott of Midland. He also leaves behind his most precious companion, Delia Aranda, and special friends, Junior and Jeannette Rogers of Kermit.
Please share with us in celebrating Harper’s life at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, at the First Baptist Church in Kermit. His minister, W.M. Tatum of Mt. Zion Baptist Church of Odessa will officiate.
Harper was loved and respected by his family and the West Texas community and will be greatly missed. We love you, Harp.
James Truett ‘Red’ Stovall
ODESSA — James Truett "Red" Stovall, 75, of Odessa died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at Hospice House. He was born Jan. 29, 1925, in Eastland County.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at Belmont Baptist Church with the Rev. Rex Clayton officiating and assisted by Rick Stovall. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Stovall served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater of Command. He moved to Odessa in 1951. He served in the Odessa Police Department for two years, was an auto mechanic for many years and was employed by the Ector County Independent School District for 10 years. A special thanks to the nursing staff at Medical Center Hospital sixth and eighth floors, his church and Sunday School class at Belmont Baptist Church, where he was a member.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Irma Lou in 1977 and his second wife, Wilma Lee in 2000.
He is survived by his daughters, Jimmie Sue Patterson and husband Joe of Southland and Barbara Martin and husband Richie of Odessa; sons, Richard Dale "Rick" Stovall and wife Rindy of Shreveport, La., Andy Coats and wife Belinda of Lubbock and Randy Coats of Odessa; 14 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

John Quincy Toler
ODESSA — John Quincy Toler, 81, of Odessa died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at his residence in Odessa.
He was born Jan. 22, 1920, in Stephensville. He had been a resident of Albuquerque, N.M., and had been a resident of Midland for three months. He worked for 33 years with Sandia National Labs as a security guard. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Albuquerque and then transferred to Abilene. He enjoyed walking and working on his yard.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Gwelda Toler on June 17, 1991.
He is survived by his son, Ron Burnett Sr. and wife Gayle of Odessa; sister, Arvezena Heron of Paris, Texas; grandchildren, Ron Burnett Jr. of Colorado Springs, Colo., Greg Burnett of Odessa and Ronda Manning of Monahans; seven great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
Services will be at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, at Sunset Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Paul Weinman of Parker Heights Christian Church officiating. Burial will be at Vista Verde Memorial Park in Albuquerque.

Sam L. Oates
ODESSA — A service of celebration was held for Sam Oates on Monday, Jan. 22, 2001, at Immanuel Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Cook officiating. Sam passed away Friday, Jan. 19, 2001, at his residence.
Survivors include his wife, Janet Oates; sons, Nikolas and Kristopher; daughter, Samantha Oates; sister, Susie Wheaton and husband Don of Arlington; parents, C.W. and Gay Oates of Odessa; nephews, Ben and Ross Wheaton and Joshua and Marcus Compis; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded by one brother, Chuck Oates.
The family requests memorials to be made to the Ellen Noel Art Museum.

Kaywin N. Berkley
Kaywin N. Berkley, 46, of Baird, died Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2000, in Baird. She was born Sept. 26, 1954, in Odessa. She was a graduate of Permian High School and moved to Baird from Tucson, Ariz. in 1991. She had been a family services representative with the USAF serving in Aviano, Italy; Ramstein AFB, Germany; and Davis-Monthan AFB, Arizona. She was an accomplished pianist, loved needlework and was a great cook.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Betty Berkley, in 1993; sister, Pamela Beam, in 1967; brother, Andrew Franklin Berkley Jr., in 1949; and great nephew, Justin Beam, in 1986.
Survivors include her father, Frank Berkley, of Odessa; sister, Beverly Hutton, of Odessa; niece, Jeni Ayres, of Midland; nephew, Richard Beam, of Odessa; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2000, at Sunset Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Dr. Ernest Easley officiating. Arrangements by Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors.

Janis Burger
Janis Burger, of Lucas, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2000, in Tulsa, Okla., after a long illness. She is survived by her husband of 19 years: Dale, of Lucas, three sons: Nicholas, Kevin, and Travis Burger, all of Lucas. She is also survived by her mother, Dorothy Word, of Imperial, Texas; three sisters, Mary O’Rourke and her husband, Steve, of Imperial; Patty Wilkinson and her husband, Donald, of Charleston, S.C.; and Kathy Lewis and her husband, Bryan, of Odessa; five nieces and four nephews.
Janis was born Oct. 3, 1960, in Hobbs, N.M. to William E. and Dorothy Ball Word. She was a resident of Lucas for the past four years and a former resident of Irving, Texas. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Allen. She was a loving wife and mother who put up a good fight against breast cancer and fought a good fight. She will be sorely missed. We love her!
Funeral services will be held on Monday, Oct. 23, 2000, at 10 a.m. in Ted Dickey Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be the Rev. Milton Guiterrez, Pastor of First United Methodist Church of Allen. Interment will follow in the Plano Mutual cemetery. A visitation will be conducted Sunday evening, Oct. 22, 2000, from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the Susan G. Koman Breast Cancer Foundation, 5005 LBJ Freeway, Dallas, Texas, 75244.

Margie Jane Thornton Wallis
Margie Jane Thornton Wallis of Gardendale went to be with the Lord on Friday, Oct. 20, 2000. Margie was born on Oct. 29, 1933, in Pioneer, Texas, the third of four children. She married
Fred Wallis on Jan. 16, 1971, in Hobbs, N.M. She and her husband toiled lovingly together to build their home in Gardendale. She enjoyed spending time with her family, the wild critters and pets that shared their home.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Carol Jane Brannan; granddaughter, Tabitha Rives; and her parents, J.W. and Ellan Thornton.
She is survived by her husband, Fred Wallis, of Gardendale; son, Mike Brannan, and his wife, Bonnie, of Odessa; daughter, Debbie Brannan, of Odessa; daughter, Valerie Lewis, and her husband, Mike, of Wichita Falls; son, Darren Wallis, of Terlingua; daughter, Veronica Beach, and her husband, Stasey, of Cuero; sister, Lola Ehrlich, and her husband, Henry, of Granbury; brother, Jim Thornton, and his wife, Susie, of Sherman; sister, Phyllis Stephens, and her husband, A.O., of Hobbs, N.M.; grandchildren, Josh Brannan, Rebecca Brannan, Kellan Brannan, Nick Rives, Blaine Rives, Cody Rives, Michael Lewis, Aubrie Beach and Seth Beach; and extended family of nieces and nephews.
Lila Tipton Meador
MATADOR — Lila Tipton Meador passed away Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, at age 92 at Camp Wood Convalescence Center in Camp Wood, where she had been for a year.
She was born Jan. 14, 1909, in Colt, Ark., to Andrew and Aletha Crowell Tipton. She moved to Matador in 1928 after graduating from high school in Caruthersville, Mo. Her parents were already in Motley County, having moved there in 1927. She met Douglas Meador in Matador, and they married
June 22, 1929, in Paducah.
She and her husband were editors and publishers of the Matador Tribune for over 40 years, from 1933 until his death in 1974. She published the paper three more years before selling the business. During the span of 40 years, the newspaper won numerous journalistic awards at regional and state press conventions.
Mrs. Meador had her own column, "Pied Pinions," between 1940 and 1960. Mr. Meador’s column, "Trail Dust," was a regular feature in the paper, having won for the first time Best Column in Texas at the State Fair in 1934. His book, "Trail Dust," was later published.
The Meadors always hired young people, usually high school students, who went on to pursue journalistic careers. One young lady is Karen Elliott House, who is a Pulitzer Prize winner.
Lila’s home was Matador for 71 years and for 70 years she was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Matador, where she played the piano and later the organ. She also taught Sunday school class.
After suffering a stroke in 1994, Mrs. Meador moved to Odessa to live with her sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Jack Crider. In December of 1999, she entered a nursing home at Camp Wood.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Douglas Meador; her father, Andrew A. Tipton; her mother, Aletha Crowell Tipton; a brother, Burrell A. Tipton; and a half-sister, Virginia Hickson.
She is survived by her sisters, Mary Crider of Odessa and Opal Fulkerson of Lubbock; a cousin, J.W. Tipton of Matador; her nieces, Donna Kirkland of Odessa, Dale Nance of Barksdale, Nola Hasty of Robert Lee, Susan Hackey of Sugar Land and Paula Hepting of Harvey, La.; her nephews, David Crider of Roswell, N.M., Gerald Fulkerson of Lubbock and Tony Juno of Indiana; and also several great-nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001, at Matador Baptist Church in Matador. Interment will be at East Mound cemetery in Matador under the direction of Seigler Funeral Home of Matador.
Family has suggested memorials to the East Mound cemetery Association at Matador or to your favorite charity.
