Cecil Ray "C.R." Smith
Cecil Ray "C.R." Smith, age 94, died Sept. 2, 2000. Memorial service will be held in the Grimes Funeral Chapels at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, 2000, with Rev. Robert Schmeltekopf officiating.
He was born to Clara Jones Smith and James Archibald Smith Jan. 3, 1906, in Temple. He graduated from Roscoe, Texas High School in 1924 and from Texas A & M College in 1928 with a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering. He was employed by Empire Oil and Refrigeration Company of Bartlesville, Okla., as a junior engineer in 1928. The name of the company changed to Cities Service Oil Company in 1937. After a year on the training program, he transferred to the oil production department. He attended the Columbia University Advanced Management School in 1954. He retired after 41 years as a director and vice president of the Oil Production Department of Cities Service in 1968.
In 1930, he married
Edaline Mildred Coulter at the ranch home near Leon, Kans. They made their first home on an oil lease south of Seminole, Okla., then followed other residences in Oklahoma City, Bartlesville, Odessa and back to Bartlesville, and retired to a small ranch near Kerrville in 1968. He later moved to town.
He was a member of Rotary for 60 years, having joined in March 1940 in Odessa, the Trinity Baptist Church of Kerrville and Texas A & M Century Club.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter, Carol Petoff; his only brother, Harrie Archibald Smith; nephew, Harrie A. Smith; and his beloved wife, Edaline Coulter Smith in December of 1994.
He is survived by three daughters and a son-in-law, Marjorie Smith Petoff and husband, George Sr. of Des Moines, Wash., Barbara Smith Green of San Angelo and Helen Smith Turner of Tulsa, Okla.; seven grandchildren, Diane Lou Petoff Turner, George L. Petoff Jr., Mary Anne Petoff Atzbach, Henry S. "Hank" Green III, Charles R. "Chuck" Green, Shawn (Kathy) Green Drewes, Christopher (Chris) C. Turner; 11 great-grandchildren; and two nieces, Dana Smith Clifton and Beverly Smith Wakefield.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Texas A & M University Foundation, Texas A & M University, College Station, Texas, or to the charity of one’s choice. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Grimes Funeral Chapels of Kerrville.
Harold E. Whitlock
ODESSA — Services for Harold E. Whitlock, 80, of Odessa, are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday at Hubbard-Kelly Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Ernest Easley officiating. Military Graveside interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Whitlock died Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2000, at a local hospital. He was born May 18, 1920, in Reno, Nev. He married
Dawn Wisner July 11, 1963, in Palm Harbor, Fla.
Mr. Whitlock was a retired truck driver. He loved the 13 years they spent traveling in their recreational vehicle seeing the country and loved each moment of life. He was a member of First Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Dawn Whitlock of Odessa; son, Michael Whitlock and wife Karen of Palm Harbor, Fla.; daughters, Sandra Scott and husband Corey of Hood River, Ore., and Donna Swinney and husband Darren of Odessa; mother-in-law, Mabel Wisner of Odessa; 12 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and his dog, Maggie.

Rose Catherine Graves
ODESSA — Rose Catherine Graves, 87, passed away Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at Parks Methodist Retirement Center.
She was born Oct. 23, 1913, in Verden, Okla. to Albert and Mary Smith.
On Oct. 25, 1928, she and Paul H. Graves were married
in San Angelo. Rose and their son lived in California while Paul was in the service during World War II. Rose worked in defense plants in California, building fuel tanks for military aircraft.
The family relocated to Odessa in August 1945.
Rose was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Graves.
Survivors include her son, Phil Graves and his wife, Rosemary; grandson, Mark Graves and his wife, Sandie; granddaughters, Rene Graves, and Kelly Phillips and her husband, Reggie; great-grandchildren, Jimmy and Alan Roach, Delaney and Henley Graves, Amanda and Hannah Phillips, all of Odessa; sister, Irene Gilliland of San Angelo; and half sister, Sylvia Thomas of Fair Oaks, Calif.
Her great-grandchildren affectionately knew Rose as "Granny Bump."
Graveside services are scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 22, 2001, at Sunset Memorial Gardens with Leonard Cotton, pastor of Country Chapel, officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.

Sam Oates
ODESSA — Sam Oates, 44 passed away Friday Jan. 19 at his home. He was born July 30, 1956, in Odessa and was a 1974 graduate of Permian High School. He attended Texas Tech and graduated from the Ron Bailey School of Broadcasting in Denver, Colo.
Sam was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church and attended St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church.
Above and beyond all, Sam loved his family. He was a devoted father and husband. He loved traveling, work and cared for his friends, co-workers and never met a stranger.
Survivors include his wife, Janet Oates; sons, Nikolaus and Kristopher Oates; daughter, Samantha Oates; sister, Susie Wheaton and her husband, Don, of Arlington; parents, C.W. and Gay Oates of Odessa; nephews, Ben and Ross Wheaton, Joshua and Marcus Compis; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by one brother, Chuck Oates.
A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Monday Jan. 22 at Immanuel Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Cook officiating. Arrangements are by Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors.
Myrtis Ruth Cherry
ODESSA — Myrtis Ruth Cherry was born Jan. 20, 1908, in Rochelle, La., to Erastus Author Thompson and Annie Louise Martin Thompson. She passed away in the early morning hours of Oct. 12, 2000, in Odessa.
Graveside services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at Sunset Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Bill Heggemeier of First United Methodist Church officiating. Services are under the care of Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.
Myrtis married
Edward Cherry Jan. 1, 1932, in Shreveport, La. They came to Odessa in 1942. She enjoyed painting and cooking. She was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church.
Her husband preceded her in death in 1987. Six brothers and sisters also preceded her in death.
She is survived by her son, Mike Cherry, and his wife Sidney of Odessa; a sister, Grace Oma Worley of Odessa; a grandson, Jamie Cherry; and several nieces and nephews.
The family suggests that memorial be made to the Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital or to St. Jude’s Hospital.

Irma Corzine
ODESSA — Irma Corzine, 94, of Odessa, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2000, at a local hospital. She was born Aug. 12, 1906, in Payson, Okla. She had lived in Odessa for 18 years and was a faithful member of First Assembly of God Church.
Irma married
Earl H. Corzine Sept. 29, 1928, in Kaw City, Okla., and he preceded her in death Sept. 3, 1976. Irma enjoyed having company and cooking for family and friends. She deeply loved her church and family.
She is survived by two sons, Roger Corzine and Clarence Corzine and his wife Ethel, all of Odessa; a daughter-in-law, Mary Murr of Junction; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, 2000, at the First Assembly of God Church with the Rev. Paul Thompson officiating. Graveside services will be held 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 16, 2000, at the Resthaven cemetery in Oklahoma City under the direction of Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to First Assembly of God Church, First Presbyterian Church, Crescent Park Baptist Church or the charity of your choice.
Johnny Calvin McCasland
ODESSA — Johnny Calvin McCasland, 75, passed away Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001, at Medical Center Hospital. He was a salesman in the retail sales industry.
He was born June 12, 1925, in Lake Arthur, N.M., to John and Mollie McCasland.
He married
Bonnie Jean Rae on Feb. 26, 1945. They came to Odessa in 1968 from Artesia, N.M.
Mr. McCasland was a member of Highland United Methodist Church. He was also a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Masonic Lodge. He was also a member of the VFW Post 4372.
Mr. McCasland also served in the U.S. Navy submarine service in World War II.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Mollie and John McCasland; his son, Edward McCasland; and two brothers, Dallas McCasland and Charley McCasland. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Vernice Emmons and Vernace Cox.
Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Jean McCasland of Odessa; a son, Johnny McCasland of Midland; a brother, Will McCasland of Eunice, N.M.; a sister, Cecil Colvin of Canon City, Colo.; three grandchildren, Robby McCasland of Lubbock, Ricky McCasland of San Angelo, and Shelly Adcock of Midland; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services are scheduled for 3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, at Sunset Memorial Chapel with Dr. David Ring of Highland United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens under the direction of Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.
