Gatha Lee Melton Porter
ODESSA - Gatha Lee Melton Porter, age 62, of Odessa passed away Monday, April 2, 2001, at her residence. She was born Sept. 14, 1937, in Cross Cut to James and Gladys Melton.
Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Thursday, April 5, 2001, in the chapel of Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors with the Rev. Dr. Ernest Easley officiating. Interment will be at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 5, 2001, in Cross Plains.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors.
Mrs. Porter grew up all over West Texas, settling in Odessa in 1961. She married
William Ben "Dub" Porter Jan. 19, 1960, in Cross Plains.
She worked for Connie’s Fashions, Matney Shoe Box and Scott’s Shoes in Odessa. She loved to "flea market," collected cookie jars and gingerbread.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James Lee Melton and Gladys Inez Melton, and a brother, James Gary Melton.
She is survived by her husband, William Ben "Dub" Porter of Odessa; sons, David A. Porter of Odessa and Dwight G. Porter and wife Deanna of Pueblo, Colo.; daughter, Cheryl Lewallen and husband David of Odessa; seven grandchildren; brothers, Larry D. Melton of Richardson and Bill Melton of Cross Plains; sister, Glenda Weiss and husband Wilburn of Whitehouse; nephew, Gregg Weiss of Greenville; niece, Staci Mayo and husband Keith of Whitehouse; and great-nieces and nephews.

Alfred J. Cook
ODESSA - Alfred J. Cook, 75, of Odessa passed away Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2001, at Avalon Nursing Home after a lengthy illness.
Services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, at Sunset Memorial Chapel with Chaplain Dick Brown officiating. Arrangements are by Sunset Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home.
Alfred was born Jan. 27, 1926, in Tahoka to Lizzie Ora and William Frank Cook. He married
Helen Lynette Munn on June 10, 1954, in Big Spring. He was a retired auto mechanic and a longtime member of Crescent Park Baptist Church. He was a veteran of World War II.
Alfred was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, T.J. of Post and Frankie of O’Donnell; and three sisters, Melba Cook and Martha McKay of Draw and Ileta Vinyard of Tahoka.
Alfred is survived by his wife, Helen of Odessa; seven children, Jim Cook and wife Debby of Midland, Doug Cook and wife Cindy of Bastrop, Travis Cook and wife Dawn of Austin, Joan Lee and husband Jerry, Nita Denny, Paul Cook and wife Nancy and Malinda Woody and husband Bert, all of Odessa; 19 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Parish Victor King
ODESSA - Parish Victor King, 81, of Granbury passed away Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001, at a Granbury nursing home.
He was born March 2, 1919, in Downsville, La. He married
Velma Walters in 1989 in Stephenville. Mr. King was a retired rancher and a Baptist.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Virginia King, and a brother.
Survivors are his wife, Velma King of Granbury; two sons, Leonard King of Odessa and Victor King of Las Vegas, Nev.; two sisters, Ruth Meier of California and Mary Hennington of Odessa; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, at Sunset Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Jimmy Braswell officiating.

Kelli Malone
ODESSA - Kelli Margo Malone, age 38, of Odessa passed away Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001, at her residence after a brief illness. She was born Dec. 28, 1962, in Odessa to Bill and Coita Malone.
A memorial service will be held to celebrate her life at 2 p.m. today, Feb. 23, 2001, at the chapel of Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors with Judge Jay Gibson officiating.
Kelli spent the last 20 years working in the legal field as a legal secretary and assistant. She was a graduate of Midland High School and attended Odessa College. Kelli was a generous and true friend, and she will be missed by everyone who knew her. She was also a champion of animals, large and small, giving a loving home to those she could and finding a safe place for those she couldn’t.
She is survived by her parents, Bill and Coita Malone of Odessa; grandmother, Fay Sanders of Hobbs, N.M.; half brothers, Fred Malone of Tulsa, Okla., and Ron Malone of Roswell, N.M.; and half sisters, Peggy Lee Anderson of Tularosa, N.M., and Cindy Wegman of Charleston, W. Va. She also leaves behind her companion, Troy "T.C." Cantrell, and his children, Jeremy, Michael and Kari.

Modesta Maria Munoz
ODESSA - Modesta Maria Munoz, 51, of Odessa passed away Monday, Feb. 20, 2001, at Baylor Medical Center in Dallas.
She was born Feb. 24, 1949, in Pecos. She married
Richard Munoz on Aug. 7, 1976, in Pecos. Mrs. Munoz moved to Odessa in 1975 from Pecos. She was a nurses’ aide. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and she was also a member of St. Mary’s Legion of Mary.
She is survived by her husband, Richard Munoz of Odessa; son, Andrew Munoz of Odessa; stepson, Ricky Munoz of Wichita Falls; daughter, Lisa Munoz of Odessa; four brothers, Manuel Chabarria of Fort Worth, Domingo Chabarria of Pecos, Jose Chabarria of Wylie and Jesus Chabarria of Gonzales, La.; three sisters, Leonarda Dominguez of Irving, Anna Gifford of Odessa and Lupe Villela of Pecos; and two grandsons, Matthew Alvarez and Tyler Munoz.
Funeral mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. today, Feb. 23, 2001, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Mathew Chackalackal officiating. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, at the Petrol cemetery in Reeves County.

Ruby Johnson Cunningham
PECOS - Ruby Johnson Cunningham went to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, April 18, 2001, in Odessa.
She was born Oct. 23, 1914, in Addis, La., to Bennie and Millie Gorum Cleveland.
Bennie Cleveland worked for the T&P Railroad, and they lived one mile from the Mississippi River. In 1927, they fled their home to escape the raging river, threatening to break the levees. The family and all their belongings rode the train west to Toyah, where they settled permanently in September 1928. Ruby lived in Toyah until 1997, when she moved to Midland to be near her son.
She was a homemaker, bookkeeper and also worked for the school in Toyah. She loved to travel with her family. She was a devout Christian and a friend to all.
She was known as Granny Ruby to many children and later to their children.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Oley Cleveland, Buford G. Cleveland and Bennie Cleveland; and a sister, Louise Puryear. Also preceding her is her husband, Garland Johnson, who died in 1960, and her second husband, B.A. "Ab" Cunningham, who died in 1984.
She is survived by her son, B.G. Johnson and wife Lynda of Midland; her brother, James H. Cleveland and wife Joyce of Odessa; her sister, Lois Boulter of Branson, Mo.; her sister, Lillie Mae Lukins and husband Floyd of Sweetwater; five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 21, 2001, at the Pecos Funeral Home Chapel with J.R. Wooten officiating. Interment will be at Mount Evergreen cemetery. Pallbearers will be her grandsons and great-grandsons.
Arrangements are under the direction of Pecos Funeral Home.
Zachary Franco
ODESSA - Zachary Franco, age 11, of Odessa went to be with God on Tuesday, April 17, 2001, at a Dallas hospital. He was born Nov. 19, 1989, in Odessa.
Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. today, April 20, 2001, at Immanuel Baptist Church with the Revs. Dr. Mark Riley and Brian Swiggart of Immanuel Baptist Church and Rosario Hill of Buenas Nuevas Church officiating.
Zachary Franco and his family have been active members of Immanuel Baptist Church of Odessa. He was involved in the Kids-4-Life Children’s Ministry at Immanuel, where he participated in many things like children’s choir, Bible drill, child precept Bible study and other activities. He had a heart for helping others and at the church served as a volunteer in the Special Needs Sunday School Class, which is for children with special needs.
Zachary was a fifth-grade student at Gonzales Elementary where he was on the A/B honor roll and participated in the drama club. He was a strong Christian at school and prayed for others and was extremely well liked by all students. He was a leader in a positive way on his school campus and volunteered in the special needs class there at Gonzales. He also held a first-degree black belt in tae kwon do.
Zachary was a very happy, caring and a loving young boy who had a great heart and loved to help and serve everyone. He loved his family and friends, especially his parents, Toby and Frances, and his brothers, Joshua and Tomas. Most of all, Zachary loved God and his personal Savior, Jesus Christ, who gave him the wonderful eternal life he is now enjoying in heaven.
While Zachary will be greatly missed, but his parents, family and friends know that because he had Jesus as his personal Lord and Savior, he is in a much better place. They pray that others will know and find the peace that they and Zachary have.
Zachary is survived by his parents, Toby and Frances Franco; brothers, Joshua T. Franco and Tomas A. Franco; grandparents, Florentino and Esperanza Franco and Hipolito and Esperanza Hernandez; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Raymond ‘Pete’ Goodman
AUSTIN - Raymond "Pete" Goodman, age 55, of Austin died Tuesday, April 17, 2001. He was born in Pecos July 24, 1945.
He was a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin with a bachelor’s degree in architecture and a master’s degree in environmental planning. He was a member of the Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity. He had served in the Peace Corps for four years.
He was preceded in death by his father, Col. Raymond Elmer Goodman.
Survivors include his mother, Peggy Goodman of Austin; his sister, Judy C. Neill and nephew, Jamie F. Neill, both of Vancouver, British Columbia; and various aunts and uncles.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today, April 20, 2001, in the Weed-Corley-Fish Chapel with Dr. Helen P. Almanza officiating. Burial will follow at Austin Memorial Park cemetery.
