Jim Cookerly

JOPLIN, Mo. - Eugene 'Jim' Cookerly, 72, of Goodman, a retired postal worker, died Saturday, Jan. 24, 1998, at St. John's Regional Medical Center in Joplin, Mo., after an illness.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. today at Mason-Woodard Mortuary and Chapel with the Rev. Bob Simon officiating. Arrangements by Mason-Woodard Mortuary and Chapel.

He was born in Joplin, Mo. and was a lifetime resident. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

SURVIVORS: Wife, Beverly Mitchell Cookerly of Joplin; son, Jim Cookerly of Goodman, Mo.; daughters, Karyl Conard of Rose Hill, Kan., Debi Cookerly of Joplin, April Parcher of McCloud, Okla., Denise Kramme of Carl Junction, Mo.; stepsons, Buford Farrington of Independence, Mo., Spenser Farrington of Arlington, Rodney Farrington of Bossier City, La.; brother, John H. Cookerly of Joplin; sister, Florence E. Lawson of Odessa; 15 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Laura Matthews

UTOPIA - Laura Pauline Matthews, 80, of Utopia, a retired bookkeeper, died Friday, Jan. 23, 1998, at Sid Peterson Hospital in Kerrville.

Services were held Sunday at the Utopia Church of Christ with George Keelin officiating. Burial was at Jones cemetery. Arrangements by Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary. She was born in Sabinal.

SURVIVORS: Husband, Lewis Mattews of Utopia; daughter, Neva Jean House of Azle; two grandchildren and four great-granchildren.

Luis Roman

PECOS - Luis Morales Roman Sr., 74, a butcher, died Sunday, Jan. 25, 1998, at Medical Center Hospital.

Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Santa Rosa Catholic Church. Rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Martinez Funeral Home. Arrangements by Martinez Funeral Home.

He was born in Ruidoso, N.M., and was Catholic.

SURVIVORS: Wife, Eduarda Jaquez Roman of Pecos; sons, Luis (Louie) Roman of Pecos, Hector (Tito) Roman of Balmorhea, Andy Roman, Joel Roman and Arturo (Artie) Roman, all of Pecos; brothers, Raul Roman of El Paso, Manuel Roman Jr. of Balmorhea, Charlie Roman of Odessa, Israel Roman of Tucumcari, N.M.; sisters, Alicia Aguirre of El Paso, Nancy Franco of Odessa, Olivia Tellez of El Paso, Mary Lou Apodaca of Saragosa, Cora Hinson of Abilene, Carmen Vige of Lubbock and Ellen Roman of Odessa.

Shirley Simmons

ODESSA - Shirley Maude Simmons, 74, of Odessa, a homemaker, died Sunday, Jan. 25, 1998, at her residence after a short illness.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Arrangements by Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.

She was born in Bay City, Mich., and had lived in Odessa since 1946.

SURVIVORS: Sons, Robert Wayne Simmons, William Lee Simmons and Roger Max Simmons, all of Odessa; stepfather, J.R. Nemeth of Odessa; sisters, Joyce Letourneau of Bay City, Mich.; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

ODESSA - Ronald Lee Brown, 59, of Odessa, died Monday, Jan. 26, 1998, at Medical Center Hospital.

ODESSA - Clarence Fred Lang, 60, of Odessa, died Monday, Jan. 26, 1998, at Medical Center Hospital. Arrangements are pending with Martinez Funeral Home.

ANDREWS - Lois Walls, 53, of Sundown died Saturday, Jan. 24, 1998, in Lubbock.

Aristeo C. Jimenez

ODESSA - Aristeo C. Jimenez, 66, died Friday, Jan. 23, 1998 at Medical Center Hospital.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Alfa Omega Christian Church with the Rev. Samuel Ramirez officiating. Burial will be at Rosehill cemetery. Arrangements by Martinez Funeral Home.

He was born in Carmargo, Mexico and was a member of the Alfa Omega Christian Church.

SURVIVORS: Wife, Maria Jimenez of Odessa; sons, Jesus Jimenez, Juan D. Jimenez and Jose Alfredo Jimenez, all of Odessa; daughter Alejandra Jimenez of Odessa; brothers Emilio Jimenez of Carmargo, Chihuahua, Mexico, Armando Jimenez of Delicias, Chihuahua, Mexico and Ramon Jimenez of Cuidad Juarez, Mexico; sister, Maria Luisa Jimenez Saenz of Carmargo, Chihuahua, Mexico.

Wheatley Cleaves Stewart

ODESSA - Wheatley Cleaves Stewart, 77, of Odessa, an Odessa physician, died Saturday, Jan. 24, 1998 at his residence.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Rose of Sharon Baptist Church with the Revs. Roy C. Gentry and J.W. Hanson officiating. Burial will be a Rosehill cemetery. Arrangements by Martinez Funeral Home.

He was born in Elkton, Kentucky and had lived in Odessa for 50 years. He was a member of the Methodist Carter Chapel, CME.

SURVIVORS: Wife, Erma Stewart of Odessa; son, Luther Henry Stewart of Baton Rouge, La.; daughter Ethel Stewart Beasley of New Albany, Miss.; brother George S. Stewart of Sacramento, Calif.; granddaughter, Veronica Beasley Hayes of Tupelo, Miss. and grandsons, Thomas Beckwith Beasley and Richard Caldwell Beasley both of New Albany, Miss., Alexander Bristow Stewart and Anthony Beckwourth Stewart, both of Baton Rouge, La.

ODESSA - Barbara Rose Ray Chancellor, 63, a teacher, died Saturday, Jan. 24, 1998, at a Dallas area hospital.

Services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jim Otterness and the Rev. Jim Hawk officiating. Interment will be at Ector County cemetery. Arrangements by Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors.

She was born in Sacramento, Calif., in 1935.

SURVIVORS: Husband, Camden Chancellor of Odessa; sons, Hilton Chancellor and Preston Chancellor, both of Midland; David Chancellor of Lufkin; mother, Nan Preston Ray of Midland; and six grandchildren.

Bernice Fowlkes

BROWNWOOD - Bernice Scott Fowlkes, 88, of Brownwood, a retired restaurant owner, died Friday, Jan. 23, 1998, at Memorial Hospital in Midland.

Services will be held at 3:30 p.m. today at Davis Morris Funeral Home. Burial will be at East Lawn Memorial Park. Arrangements by Davis Morris Funeral Home.

She was born in Brownwood and was a Baptist.

SURVIVORS: Daughters, Sue Allen of Brownwood, Mosolete LeMaster of Midland; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Charles Gibson

MONAHANS - Charles Thomas Gibson, 58, of Monahans, an auto mechanic, died Thursday, Jan. 22, 1998, at his residence.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Monahans Memorial cemetery. Arrangements by Harkey Funeral Home.

He was born in Kilgore and was a longtime resident of Monahans. He was a Baptist.

SURVIVORS: Son, Charles Ray Gibson of Huntsville; daughters, Dianne Jasper of Gatesville, Melissa Young of Garner, N.C., Sonja Gibson of Seattle; sister, Patsy Gibson of Brownwood; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
