KERMIT — J.C. "Red" Payne, 69, of Kermit, a self-employed trucker, died Sunday, May 13, 2001, at his residence.
Services will be at 10 a.m. today at Baptist Temple Church with Richard Coffman officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Troy cemetery in Troy, Okla. Arrangements by Cooper Funeral Chapel.
He was born in Tishomingo, Okla., and was a resident of Kermit for 50 years. He was Baptist.
SURVIVORS: Wife, Lee Payne of Kermit; son, Jimmy Payne of Kermit; daughter, Janice Petty of San Angelo; sisters, Dorothy Clemmons of Tishomingo and Veljean Sellers of St. Louis, Mo.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

REDFORD — Alejandra V. Pena, 88, of Odessa, a homemaker, died Sunday, May 13, 2001, at her residence.
Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. today at the church. Burial will be at the Redford cemetery. Arrangements by Odessa Funeral Home Angeles Memorial Chapel.
She was born in Pecos. She was Catholic.

LaVesta Lee Chennault
ODESSA — LaVesta Lee Chennault, 80, of Odessa passed away Thursday, April 26, 2001, at the Hospice House.
She was born June 6, 1920, in Jayton. She worked as a bookkeeper for Fitz Equipment for 25 years and retired in 1990. She also worked for W.E. Howard, C.P.A., for over 25 years. She was a member and past president of the American Business Women’s Association and the Odessa Tabernacle Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James W. "Woody" Chennault Oct. 16, 1992; her parents, Ervin and Bessie Lee; and two sisters.
She is survived by her son, Randy Chennault and wife Mary Anne of Hemet, Calif.; daughter, Sandra "Sandi" Hudman and husband Wade of Odessa; brother, B.R. Lee of Stephenville; six grandchildren, Olivia and Bryan Cook, Tammy, Brian and Cory Chennault, Megan and Jeremy Hudman; and a great-grandson, Tyler Cook.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, April 30, 2001, at the Odessa Tabernacle Church with the Revs. Sam Jordan and Doug Herget officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Coral Scott Rankin
RANKIN — Coral Scott Rankin, 85, of Rankin died Thursday, April 26, 2001, at Memorial Hospital and Medical Center in Midland.
Services will be at 10 a.m. today, April 28, 2001, at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Jim Medley officiating. Burial will follow at the Rankin cemetery with services under the direction of Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home of Crane.
Mrs. Rankin was born March 17, 1916, in Big Spring. She had been a longtime resident of Rankin. She was a welder and was a ship builder during World War II, and she was also a carpenter. She had owned an oilfield water sales business. She married
W.E. "Billy" Rankin Jan. 13, 1947, in McCamey. He preceded her in death Aug. 18, 1995. She was a Beta Sigma Phi member at large, a tournament duplicate bridge player, a member of the American Quarter Horse Association, a member of the West Texas Trail Riders Association and a member of the First Baptist Church.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Kay and Jim Williams of Rankin; sister, Maxine Bennett of Dallas; two grandsons, Michael Rankin and John Williams, both of San Antonio; two great-grandchildren, Shelby Williams and Barrett Williams, both of San Antonio; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Leonardo Alonzo
ODESSA Leonardo Alonzo, 58, of Odessa passed away Sunday, May 20, 2001, at his residence. He was born Nov. 6, 1942, in Castanos, Coahuila, Mexico. He married
Gregoria Martinez on Dec. 30, 1976, in Odessa. She preceded him in death. He moved to Odessa in July 1976. He worked as a janitor for a machine shop and was a Catholic.
Survivors are his two sons, Albert Smithwick of Big Spring and Joe Smithwick of San Angelo; eight daughters, Araceli Martinez of North Carolina, Ale Fuentes, Beatrice Ramirez, Janie Frausto, Mary Harrison and Dorothy Bridges, all of Odessa, Frances Haro of Louisiana and Nancy Qualls of Fort Worth; two brothers, Pedro Alonzo of Castanos, Mexico, and Augustine Garces of Midland; three sisters, Julia V. Plowman of San Jose, Calif., Paulina Del Abra of Castanos, Mexico, and Maria Romano of Midland; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. today, May 22, 2001, at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel. Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 23, 2001, at St. Marys Catholic Church with the Rev. Matthew Chackalackal officiating. Interment will be at Mount Olive cemetery in Big Spring.

Jerry Delmar Cox
ARCHER CITY Jerry Delmar Cox, age 58, of Archer City passed away Sunday morning, May 20, 2001, at Hamilton Hospital in Olney after a courageous battle with cancer.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. today, May 22, 2001, at the First Christian Church of Archer City with the Rev. Jordan Gary, pastor of the First Christian Church, Roger Deerinwater, pastor of the First Baptist Church, and the Rev. Bob Kitchell of Archer City, officiating. Interment will be at the Archer City cemetery under the direction of Aulds Funeral Home.
Mr. Cox, the son of Dennis and Vergie Burrows Cox, was born April 18, 1943, in Ada, Okla. He graduated from Denver City High School where he was a member of the 1960 2A State Champion Football Team. He attended Texas Tech on a football scholarship and attended Midwestern University. He and Ellen Campbell were married
Jan. 2, 1987, at the First Christian Church Parsonage in Archer City.
He was a former resident of Seminole and Denver City before moving to Archer City in 1985. He was the owner and operator of Cox and Associates Insurance Co. He was a member of the National Association of Health Underwriters and Life Underwriters. He had received LUTCF designation, Blue Cross/Blue Shield Top Broker Award for 1995, NALU National Sales Award and NALU National Quality Award. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Archer City where he was an elder and started the Young Adults Sunday School Class. He was a past lay director of the Archer City Emmaus Community and board member of the Cross Country Emmaus Community. He was an executive director of the Archer Chamber of Commerce where he was selected as the citizen of the year in 1999. He was a charter member of the Helping Hands Optimist Club, past member of the Archer City Housing Authority Board and past president of the Archer City Band Boosters Club.
Survivors include his wife, Ellen Campbell Cox of Archer City; a son, Jerry Tex Cox and wife, Melesha, of Archer City; two daughters, Kasey Beth Cox of Plano and ReBecca Wikert and husband, Robert, of Wichita Falls; and two grandchildren, Kinslee Beth and Hailee Morgan Cox of Archer City.
The family suggests memorials to the First Christian Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 696, Archer City, Texas.

ODESSA Dorothy Guthrie, 88 years of age, passed away Sunday, May 20, 2001, at her Odessa residence. She was born Oct. 14, 1912, in Brooklyn, N.Y.
She was preceded in death by her husband, R. Jack Guthrie; son, James E. Burke; and daughters, Jackie M. Pierce and Mary E. Sedig. She was also preceded in death by her parents, George F. Thalman and Virginia Thalman.
Surviving are her sons, Charles E. Burke of Odessa, T.J. Evans Jr. of Granbury and Richard W. Guthrie of Clyde; daughters, Dineen L. Parsons of El Sobrante, Calif., Denise R. Redden of Farmersville, Shirley A. Adams of Odessa, Beverly J. Johnson of Verona, N.J., Trisha A. McBroom of Melissa, Elizabeth A. Blackford of Austin, Kathryn L. Brewster of Runaway Bay, Sherri L. Guthrie of Sanger and Shelia J. Clearman of Denton; brother, Eddie Gerard of Pennsylvania; a very special friend, Mikey Lynch; 46 grandchildren; 82 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Memorial services are set for 6 p.m. today, May 22, 2001, at Odessa Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Jimmy Braswell officiating. Interment will be private.

BROWNWOOD Alan W. "A.W." Hair, age 57, of Bangs passed away Saturday, May 19, 2001, at his ranch.
He was born Oct. 23, 1943, in Brownwood. He was a graduate of Permian High School and the University of North Texas. He was a former building contractor in the Midland-Odessa area and for the past 15 years a rancher in Brown County. He married
Maryln Joy on May 29, 1965, in Artesia, N.M.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Merlene Hair, and a daughter, Kristel Rene Verette.
A Christian man, he is survived by his wife, Maryln Hair of Bangs; children, June Gibson and husband James D. of Bangs, Tye Hair and wife Shelly of San Antonio, Dusty Hair of Dallas, Dennis Hair and wife Monica of Corpus Christi and David Hair and wife Belinda of Midland; and four grandchildren, Destine and Zakory Verette, Mackey Gibson and Dennis Hair Jr. His father, Bill Hair of Bangs, and sister, Donna Rue James and husband Larry of Oklahoma, also survive him.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. today, May 22, 2001, at the Davis-Morris Funeral Home Chapel with Bo Shero officiating. Interment will follow at the Greenleaf cemetery.

ODESSA Felipa Matta, 67, of Odessa passed away Saturday, May 19, 2001, at Medical Center Hospital.
She was born Aug. 23, 1933, in Carlsbad, N.M., to Ignacia Contreras and Daniel Renteria. She was a homemaker and had been a resident of Pecos. She was a member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church.
Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. today, May 22, 2001, at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church with the Rev. Pablo Liong officiating. Interment will be at Rose Hill cemetery.
She was preceded in death by her father, Daniel Renteria.
She is survived by her husband, Juan Matta of Odessa; mother, Ignacia Renteria of Goshen, Calif.; daughters, Rose Marie Abila of Abilene and Sally Cortez of Goshen; sons, Ray Matta and Raul Matta, both of Odessa, Roger Matta and Ruben Matta, both of Pecos, and Rolando Matta of El Cajon, Calif.; brothers, Joe Renteria of Hollister, Calif., and Wally Renteria of Goshen; sisters, Josie Parraz of Goshen, Mary Moreno of Visalia, Calif., Lorina Franco of Hanford, Calif., and Jennie Eredia of Goshen; 21 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
