Esta Vera Eubanks
ODESSA — Esta Vera Eubanks, 85, of San Angelo, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, at a San Angelo Nursing Home.
Graveside services will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001, at Sunset Memorial Gardens with Bob Zap, an Andrews Presbyterian minister, officiating.
Esta was born March 15, 1916, to Walter and Susan Waltrip in Tahlequah, Okla. She married Maynard F. Eubanks on Dec. 29, 1932, in Humble City, N.M. He preceded her in death in 1984. She was a housewife and a longtime resident of San Angelo.
She is survived by a son, Jamie Eubanks and wife Shirley of San Angelo; two granddaughters, Elaine Thomas and husband Cliff of Richardson and Karen Beard and husband Kent of Katy; and three great-grandchildren, Bryce Thomas, Allison Thomas and Carson Beard.
Services entrusted to Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.

Frieda Marie Mitchell
ODESSA — Frieda Marie Mitchell, 87, of Odessa passed away Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001, at Hospice House. Mrs. Mitchell was born Aug. 30, 1914, in Kaw, Okla. She married Joe Mitchell on May 2, 1935, in Braman, Okla. They moved to Odessa in 1937.
Mrs. Mitchell had been a longtime member of First United Methodist Church and was charter member of the Women’s Society Christian Service. She had been a former member of the Odessa Garden Club and was a floral designer for over 30 years. She received the “Woman of the Year” award from the Circle 5 Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association and also had been a past president. She had worked for Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home for 43 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Mitchell; a son, Joey; and two sisters, Kathrynne Riddle and Audrey Davis.
She is survived by her son, F.R. Mitchell and his wife Nancy of Gardendale; two granddaughters, Julie Ann Lee and Jennifer Lynn Welch, both of Odessa; three stepgrandchildren, Whitney Brady and Torey Winford, both of Odessa, and Ben Winford of Nigeria; and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001, at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Jimmy Braswell officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens under the direction of Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Community Care Hospice or Hospice House.
Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.

Johnny Albert Ruiz
ODESSA — Johnny Albert Ruiz, 37, passed away Monday, Oct. 8, 2001, at his residence.
Mass will be celebrated at noon Saturday at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Gilbert Rodriguez officiating. Burial will be at Rose Hill cemetery. There will be a rosary at 7 p.m. today at Hubbard-Kelly Chapel.
Pallbearers will be Moses Garcia, Peter Moomey, Rene Ruiz, Maurice Garcia, Tony Garcia and Lori Gonzales.
Mr. Ruiz was born Nov. 4, 1963, in Odessa. He was a computer operator at Flow CO2. He was Catholic.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Cynthia Moomey.
His survivors include his daughter, Vianca Ruiz of Odessa; his mother, Narce Ruiz of Odessa; his father and stepmother, Pete and Mary Ruiz of Odessa; his four brothers, A.G. Carrasco of Odessa, Leslie Garcia of Sacramento, Calif., Moses Garcia of Odessa and Pete Anthony Ruiz of Odessa; and his sister, Mari Cruz Ruiz of Odessa.
Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.

Alton Turner
STANTON — Alton Turner, 85, formerly of Stanton, died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, at a Bellville nursing home.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today, Oct. 12, 2001, at Downtown Church of Christ with Deral McWhorter, minister of Cedar Ridge Church of Christ in Gatesville, officiating. Assisting will be Ellmore Johnson, retired Church of Christ minister of Lubbock and Van Pendergrass, minister of Downtown Church of Christ. Interment will follow at Evergreen cemetery.
Alton was born April 23, 1916, in Stanton and married Imogene Morgan on Dec. 29, 1934, in Midland. He was a lifelong resident of Stanton and owned and operated grocery stores in Stanton for over 30 years. He was a member of Downtown Church of Christ where he served as a deacon. After retiring, he was active in the church and was also an active member of the Martin County Senior Citizens, the Old Sorehead Band and other community activities.
He was preceded in death by a son, Alton Randall Turner; his parents, Carter and Cora Turner; three sisters, Jessie Widner, Opal Hopson and Lula Black; and two brothers, Leo Turner and O.C. Turner.
Survivors include his wife, Imogene Turner of Houston; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sheila and Wesley Williams of Houston and Debbie and Mark Locke of San Antonio; five grandchildren, Shannah Frambes and her husband Brian of Bronxville, N.Y., Michelle Friede and her husband Cliff of Katy, Eric Williams, Mark Alan Locke and Jeffrey Locke, all of San Antonio; four great-grandchildren, Elissa Friede, Cole Frambes, Libby Frambes and Alison Frambes; two brothers, Jack Turner of Odessa and Willard Turner of Monahans; and a sister, Corene Rives of Odessa.
The family suggests memorials be made to Martin County Senior Citizen Center, P.O. Box 1233, Stanton, Texas.

Don Learned
ODESSA — Don W. Learned, 74, of Odessa, a retired car salesman for Sewell Ford, died Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2001, at Shannon Memorial Hospital in San Angelo.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9, 2001, at Greenfield Acres Baptist Church with Mike Bartlett officiating. Arrangements by Johnson’s Funeral Home.
He was born Dec. 16, 1926, in Iron Mountain, Mich. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was Baptist.
He is survived by his wife, Dean Learned of Odessa; daughter, Donna Trimble of Orange, Calif.; stepdaughters, Linda Johnson, Bobbie McKeel and Billie Needham, all of Odessa; stepson, Allen Johnson of Odessa; brothers, Chuck Learned of Las Vegas and Dick Learned of Michigan; sisters, Lynn See of Las Vegas and Phyllis Hoffman of California; and a grandson, Bobby Trimble of Orange, Calif.

Lasaro Lopez Abalos Sr.
RANKIN — Lasaro Lopez Abalos Sr., 89, went to be with God surrounded by his family Thursday, Dec. 6, 2001.
He is survived by sons, Paul C. (Pilar) Abalos, Basilio C. (Francis) Abalos, Richard C. (Delma) Abalos, Frank C. (Francis) Abalos, Lasaro C. (Maria) Abalos Jr., Rosendo C. (Yolanda) Abalos, George F. Abalos, Jessie F. (Josie) Abalos, Johnny F. (Linda) Abalos, Selso F. (Mary) Abalos, Lupe F. Abalos; daughters, Linda (Frank) Rojas, Martha (David) Black, Victoria (Marcelino) Dominguez; 55 grandchildren; 88 great-grandchildren; eight great-great grandchildren; Juanita Barrera Abalos (sister-in-law); numerous nephews, nieces, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Andres Abalos, and his mother, Felicita Lopez Abalos, daughter Estolia A. Ortiz, son-in-law Rodolfo Ortiz, wife Angela Covarubio, wife Consuelo Flores Abalos, and brothers Francisco (Panchito) Abalos, Francisco (Chico) Abalos and Selso Abalos.
He was born Feb. 28, 1912, in Camargo, Chihuahua. He moved to Rankin at a very early age. Lasaro was a life-long resident of Rankin and was considered the hardest working man in Rankin by most residents. In his later years, Rankin residents fondly looked out for Lasaro when he was driving his big, red truck. He was a musician who loved to play the violin with local musicians. He and his musician friends would entertain at the local senior citizen’s center.
Visitation will be held at Martinez Funeral Home on Friday, Dec. 7, 2001, from 5 to 10 p.m. and at Rankin Park Building, 310 E. 10th St., Rankin, Texas, from noon Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001, to Monday, Dec. 10, 2001. A rosary will be held Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001, at 7 p.m.
Funeral services will be held Monday, Dec. 10, 2001, at 10 a.m. at Rankin Park Building. Father Barry McLean will be officiating. Burial will be in the Rankin cemetery in Rankin.

DeShay Ebert
SAN ANTONIO — DeShay Ebert, 39, of San Antonio, Texas, passed away Dec. 5, 2001, at her residence. Ms. Ebert was born June 1, 1962, in Odessa. She graduated from Permian High School in 1980 and attended Odessa College.
DeShay was an active body builder and won numerous Body Building Contests in 1983-84. She began judging state body building contests in 1985 and national contests in 1997. In 1999 she began judging international contests for the International Federation of Body Builders and was currently active on all levels. She served as Chairman of the Texas Amateur Body Builders Organization (NPC) from 1990 to the present. She was active in the national promotion of the Junior Nationals in 1999 and 2000 and was a writer for South Texas Fitness and Health Magazine since 1994.
She was the owner of Turbo Custom Components, Inc. in Odessa and had worked as bookkeeper for Turbo Specialties for 20 years. In 1994, she became a personal trainer in San Antonio. She appeared twice at Spurs games during time outs for skits with the Spurs Coyote before more than 18, 000 people and was speaker for Spurs player, Keith Edmonson’s Basketball Camp for 50 young people.
She is survived by her parents, Flash and Tommie Ebert of Odessa; her paternal grandmother, Evaline Ebert of Odessa; two brothers, Price Ebert of Sweetwater and Craid Ebert of Pilot Point.
The casket will lie in state from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001, in the Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
Funeral Services are scheduled for 3 p.m. Monday, Dec. 10, 2001, in the Immanuel Baptist Church with Dr. Mark Riley and David Parker officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens under the direction of Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.

Dawson Smith
ODESSA — Dawson L. Smith, 73, of Odessa, passed away Saturday, December 8, 2001, at his residence. He was born October 13, 1928, in Hall Summit, LA, to Lory and Bertie Smith.
Graveside services are scheduled for 3 p.m. today, December 10, 2001, at Sunset Memorial Gardens with Rev. Bobby Wayne Bonds officiating.
Mr. Smith served in the U.S. Army from 1946 to 1949. He married Faye Bonds on November 12, 1949, in Natchitoches, La., and later moved to Odessa in 1964. He retired from El Paso Natural Gas after 35 years, and was the former owner of Trails End BookStore. He was a Mason, and Shriner, and a member of both the American Legion, and the Goldsmith Lodge.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Faye Smith; sons, Dawson Smith Jr. and Dennis Smith, both of Odessa; daughter, Wanda Kerce of Odessa; three grandchildren, Angela Davis, Greg Fox, and Savannah Smith; and four great-grandchildren, Spencer and Sterling Davis, and Breland and Stratton Fox.
Memorials can be made to Star Care Hospice.
Services are entrusted to Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.
