James M. ‘Jim’ Gay
ODESSA — James M. “Jim” Gay, 79, of Cisco passed away Friday, Oct. 5, 2001, in Fort Worth. Mr. Gay was born Dec. 30, 1921, in Haskell. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of the Catholic Church.
Mr. Gay married
Idelfonsa Granado in Odessa 34 years ago. They had been former residents of Odessa and have lived in Cisco for seven years.
He is survived by his wife, Ilda Gay of Cisco; five stepsons, Bill Stewart of Fort Worth, Pete Stewart of Houston, John Stewart of Odessa, Gene Stewart of San Antonio and Edward Stewart of Odessa; a stepdaughter, Betty Stewart of Houston; a sister, Mae Borth of Stratford; three nephews, Herman Borth of Stratford, Lee Brannon and Dee Brannon, both of Andrews; three nieces, Fern Yell of Amarillo, Mary Gay Billingsley of Alamogordo, N.M., and June Griffin of Conroe; 18 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. today, Oct. 9, 2001, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church with the Rev. Mark Woodruff as celebrant. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens under the direction of Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.

Eula Belle Halbert
ODESSA — Eula B. Halbert, 91, of Odessa passed away Sunday, Oct. 7, 2001, at a Midland hospital after a sudden illness.
Eula moved to Odessa in 1944 from Baytown. She was married
to Carl L. Halbert on June 12, 1930, in Kaufman. Carl preceded her in death in 1986.
Mrs. Halbert was a member of the Highland Methodist Church. She loved painting, poetry and crocheting.
Her son, Robert Halbert and wife Emma of Odessa and grandson Philip Halbert and wife Larissa of Odessa survive her.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Anderson-Clayton Funeral Home Chapel in Kemp. Burial will follow at the Kemp cemetery.

Dr. Shelby Lee Brumelle
VANCOUVER, British Columbia — Shelby Lee Brumelle, 62, of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, passed away Sunday, Sept. 16, 2001, after a brief but courageous struggle with cancer.
Memorial services were held Friday, Sept. 21, 2001, at the Unitarian Church of Vancouver.
Shelby was born in Oklahoma and raised in Odessa and graduated from Odessa High School in 1957. Shelby graduated from California Institute of Technology with a degree in mathematics and from the University of California at Berkeley with a Ph.D. in industrial engineering and operations research.
Shelby joined the faculty of Commerce, University of British Columbia, Canada, in 1969 as a member of the management science division (operations and logistics) and worked in that division as a professor emeritus until his retirement June 30, 2000. Shelby made many valuable contributions to the Commerce faculty through his scholarship, scientific publications, through teaching and supervision of students and through his administrative efforts including the chair of the management science division. His dedication to teaching touched and influenced many lives.
He is survived by his wife, Karen; sons, Colin and Justin; his mother, Leota Brumelle of Odessa; and two brothers, Kendell of Evergreen, Colo., and Kenneth of Odessa.

George Carroll Tucker
ODESSA — George Carroll Tucker, 69, of Odessa passed away Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001, at his residence. Mr. Tucker was born Jan. 17, 1932, in Childress County to Curtis and Iola Tucker. He moved to Odessa in 1937 and was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Mr. Tucker married
Ruby M. Birkhead on Jan. 18, 1953, in Paducah. He had been the owner of Tucker Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning for 17 years and was a member of the Texas Air Conditioners Contractors Association. He had been a faithful member of Bethany Christian Church for 39 years and served as chairman of the property committee, chairman of deacons and a trustee on the board. He will be remembered as a faithful family man.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Ola Mae Thomas.
He is survived by his wife, Ruby Tucker of Odessa; three daughters, Terri Francell and her husband Clay, Sharla Commers and Brenda Donner and her husband Barry, all of Odessa; two sisters, Betty Lou Gillam and her husband A.M. of Garland and Joann Bates and her husband Marcus of Odessa; and nine grandchildren, Heather, Lawrence, Cody, Christy, Curtis, Colton, Zebulon, Gideon and Ezekiel.
Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 1, 2001, at Bethany Christian Church with the Rev. Rob Scofield officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens under the direction of Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Community Care Hospice of Odessa, Bethany Christian Church or the American Cancer Society.

Ernest Martin Conners
ODESSA — Ernest M. Conners, 65, passed away Saturday, December 1, 2001, at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa. He was born April 23, 1946, in Marfa, to John F. and Francis Conners.
Ernest was in the U.S. Army and served his country in the Vietnam War. He married
his wife, Carmen Carrasco, on February 14, 1978, in Marfa, and moved to Odessa from Ft. Stockton that same year. Mr. Conners was employed with Medco for 17 years, then for Flint for several years before his illness. He was also a member of the VFW Post 4372 Honor Guard, and received many safety awards.
Rosary is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Monday evening, December 3, 2001, at Sunset Memorial Chapel.
Services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 4, 2001, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with Father Laugo officiating. Burial will follow in Ector County cemetery.
His parents, John F. Conners, and Francis Mellion Conners, and one brother, Mike Steven Conners, precede him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Carmen Conners; son, Steven Ray Conners, both of Odessa; brothers, John C. Conners, Lawrence Patrick Conners, both of Marfa; Edward F. Conners, and James F. Conners, both of El Paso; sisters, Francis Garcia of Marfa, and Dorothy Isabel Conners of Odessa.

Letha Hollis
MIDLAND — Letha Hollis, 86, passed away in Fairfax, Va., on Nov. 30, 2001 after prolonged respiratory illness.
Born July 28, 1915, in Clairemont, Texas, she came with her parents, Bill and Prudy Chaffin to Crane at an early age and attended Crane High school.
She had three brothers, Joe, Ed and Jack.
In July 1935, she married
T.J. “Jimmy” Hollis, who was active in the oil business most of his life throughout the Permian Basin.
She was regarded by all that knew her as a wonderfully sweet and kind person and a caring mother.
Letha lived various periods of time in Crane, Big Lake, Snyder, Lovington, Hobbs and for the last 35 years, in Midland.
She is survived by son, Allan Hollis of McLean, Va., granddaughters Spring Hollis of New York City and granddaughter Emily Anderson and great-granddaughter Laine of Burke, Va., all of whom loved her very much.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Dec. 5 at 2 p.m. in Crane at the chapel of the Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home, presided over by the Rev. Steve Baker of the Crane First Baptist Church.

Donnie R. Moorehead
ODESSA — Donnie R. Moorehead, 57, of Odessa went to be with the Lord on Sept. 24, 2001. He was born Jan. 5, 1944, to Leo B. Moorehead and Juanita Slaughter.
Donnie came to Odessa in 1951 from Ardmore, Okla. He worked for Mike Byrds Casing for a number of years. He loved fishing and his children and his grandchildren.
His father, Leo Moorehead, and brother, Thomas Slaughter, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his daughters, Carrie Blakely of Odessa and Christi Shawell of Houston; stepchildren, Teressa Jimenez of Odessa, Joe Alanis of Conley and Jessie Alanis of Odessa; mother, Juanita Slaughter of Odessa; brother, Mike Slaughter of Denver, Colo.; sisters, Cynthia Bentley and Linda Loper, both of Odessa; and nine grandchildren.
Graveside services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 29, 2001, at Sunset Memorial Gardens with the Rev. John Van Hoose officiating.

Joseph Devon ‘Bud’ Mote
MIDLAND — “Bud” Mote died Monday, Sept. 24, 2001, at a local hospital.
A visitation has been set from 5 to 6 p.m. today, Sept. 26, 2001, at Ellis Funeral Home. Funeral services have been scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, 2001, at Ellis Funeral Home Chapel. Graveside services will follow at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001, at the Alvord cemetery in Alvord. Arrangements are under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home.
“Bud” Mote was born Sept. 21, 1928, in Justin to Edwin and Elva Mote. He was reared and educated in Wise County. “Bud” retired from El Paso Products Co. He was a member of the Odessa Chuckwagon Gang, Eagle’s Lodge and the VFW.
“Bud” is survived by his two sons, Craig Mote of Andrews and Kirk Mote of San Angelo; and a sister, Beverly Mijon Kelly of San Angelo.
